Riverside Lodge honors longtime members

ifty years ago, three men joined Riverside Masonic Lodge 503 Free and Accepted Masons in Wrightsville, and they were honored for their long service to the organization in October. Art Bigler and Alvin Fake, both Past Masters of the lodge, as well as Alvin Himes, were awarded the Pennsylvania Grand Lodge Award of Gold, a distinctive emblem to be won in recognition of their service and dedication to the fraternity. District Deputy Darrin Catts presented the award to Bigler and Fake at a meeting at the lodge, 25 Cool Creek Road, Wrightsville, with friends and family members in attendance. Himes was unable to attend, but Catts authorized officers and members of the lodge to present the award to him at his home, with friends and family present. Riverside Masonic Lodge members provide community service through a number of projects throughout the year, said Keith Flaharty, a twotime Past Master who will be Master of the lodge next year. “We are a men’s organization, and we’re one of the oldest fraternal organizations around,” he noted. “We like to say we take men in and we make them better.” Flaharty has been a member for 41 years, and his grandfather, father, brother and two sons have also been members. “We are trying more and more to get out into the community,” Flaharty said of the organization. The lodge sponsors scholarships for local students, provides meals for families in the Eastern York School District and holds a variety of fundraisers throughout the year, including a chicken barbecue
Dogs have taken over the library at Park Elementary School in the Columbia Borough School District, but don’t worry; the library is still a calm, quiet place. These dogs are in the form of books provided by the American Kennel Club (AKC) through a program called Bailey’s Book Club. “The books range in interest level from kindergarten to fourth grade,” said librarian Kelcey Bucks. “All the books are about dogs, a popular topic among our young readers. The books include old Park Elementary students Cedar Frey (left) and Hutchinson (right) alongside Kelly favorites like Clifford Genevieve Skiptunas and Jager with books from Bailey’s

Sometimes, when she’s out running errands, Helen Bechtold feels like a celebrity. “It could be July and it’s about 105 degrees outside, and people will see me on the street and they’ll say, ‘Hey! You’re the Christmas lady!’” she said with a smile. For the 36th year, Bechtold is organizing a free Christmas Day dinner for anyone age 55 or older. which Bechtold purchases herself. “If I see something I think a senior will like in their bag, I’ll pick it up for them,” she said. “I like to give them things they don’t normally go out and buy.” Although she loves giving back, she noted that she’s looking for community support of donations of gift cards, candy or other items for the bags. “After the pandemic, we thought things would get easier, but it’s really gotten harder for people,” Bechtold said, noting that last year she served more than 100 meals. “We’re asking the commu-
nity for more help than ever because the cost of living keeps going up.” Bechtold is joined in her Christmas meal effort by Sis Luzader, who has been helping with the meals for 35 years. Any senior is eligible to receive a meal and food bag, no matter their income or circumstances. “This is not charity,” Bechtold said. “This is not just for low-income people. This is strictly for people who will be alone on the holiday. Christmas is a special day, and seniors should not be alone. Even though they can’t stay and eat
there, they can come in and visit with us when they pick up their meal.” She emphasized that anyone who would like a meal should sign up for one. “I want to make sure no one is ashamed to call,” she said. Asked what keeps her going with the project year after year, Bechtold said she has a heart for seniors. She worked for Columbia Senior Center for more than 20 years, and when she retired, she wanted to continue serving seniors. “I just get a kick out of it,” she said. “I love to see their smiles.” Meals will be available by
brings her dog, Jager, to read with students at the school library, heard about the program and suggested that Bucks apply. The AKC delivered 15 books in October. “In addition to the books, there were bookmarks for the students,” Bucks noted. “AKC also provided reading extension activities that could be used with the books, such as comprehension questions and matchbook summaries.” Skiptunas and Jager join students at the Park library a few times a month. “Reading aloud
to Jager helps our students practice their fluency with reading,” Bucks explained. “It builds their self-confidence because reading therapy dogs do not judge them or make them feel uncomfortable. It makes students want to read and that intrinsic motivation is important on the path toward becoming independent readers.” She added that the donation from Bailey’s Book Club will have a lasting impact on the students at Park.

Alvin Himes (seated) was honored at his home for his service to Riverside Lodge.
Huston for his nephew, the home remained a private residence until 1909, when it became a sanitarium that administered rabies vaccines to children. In 1919, as World War I was ending, Mr. and Mrs. Henry S. Hiestand purchased the building and donated the house to the community of Marietta, dedicating it in the memory of their son, Lt. Benjamin Hiestand, who had died while serving in the military. Over the years, the building has housed an American Legion post, a public library, a well-baby clinic, a soup kitchen and the Pennsylvania School for the Arts, among other organizations. Now a nonprofit organization, it serves as a wedding and special event venue, with a focus on a variety of community events throughout the year, including an annual Veterans Day celebration and a garden tour. Boy Scout Troop 64 will host a Breakfast with Santa on Saturday, Dec. 9, from 8 a.m. to noon at Salem United Church of Christ (UCC), 2312 Marietta Ave., Lancaster. The event is returning after a hiatus due to the pandemic. The meal will include pancakes, eggs, bacon, sausage and fruit, along with orange juice, milk, coffee, hot chocolate, tea, and eggnog. It is a Troop 64 tradition to have an eggnog toast with Santa every half hour during the event. Breakfast with Santa also includes time for children to visit and take pictures with Santa and to purchase items at Santa’s Secret shop, a small store created by the Boy Scouts. It includes nominally priced items that children may purchase as gifts for their family members. To help keep the gifts a surprise, the Scouts will wrap the presents at the event. Boy Scout Troop 64 meets each Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at Salem UCC and is open to boys ages 11 to 18. For more information about the breakfast or joining the Scouts, call Nina at 717-572-3448.
