“When I see someone in need, I help them,” said Helen Bechtold. And for more than 30 years, Bechtold has been doing just that by providing a free Christmas meal to seniors. Bechtold and Sis Luzader are known as the “Columbia Christmas Ladies.” They will once again
offer the meal on Christmas Day, Sunday, Dec. 25. It will be available for pickup only at the Hambones Social Club of the Columbia Borough Fire Department, 726 Manor St., from 11:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.
The meal will include turkey, ham, mashed potatoes, a vegetable, a roll and butter, cranberry sauce and a dessert. It is available to anyone age 55 or older, regardless of income. “It’s for anyone who might be alone on Christmas or who doesn’t have anyone to celebrate with,” Bechtold said. “Christmas is such an important holiday to seniors. I think it’s when they miss their family and friends the most. Rather than sitting at home alone, they can come out and get a meal and know someone is thinking of them.”

Angie
Kreider took a personal loss and turned it into a way to help others. When Angie’s mother, Sharon Atkins, was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease at 59, Sharon had one request: She wanted to remain at home and be cared for by her family. Angie and her father, Bob Atkins, were able to accommodate that request, caring for Sharon in their Columbia home until she passed away in October of 2021. The family relied on additional care from Compassus Hospice, which sparked an idea for Angie.
“I learned about people in government-funded or Medicaid-funded facilities who don’t have the money for nightgowns, or they don’t have friends or relatives to give them to them,” Angie recalled. “My mom was a fashion diva. She really wanted to look nice. A nightgown is a way someone can feel special and feel beautiful. I started thinking, ‘Maybe we could help people out.’”
In June of 2021, before Sharon passed away, Angie and Bob created Nanny’s Nighties, using the nickname
Sharon’s grandchildren gave her. Gathering financial donations from friends and family, Angie and Bob shopped for high-quality nightgowns and delivered 80 in December of 2021. The gifts were so well-received, the pair decided to repeat the distribution to more women this past spring, to mark Sharon’s birthday in April. So far, they have distributed more than 300 nightgowns to women in long-term care facilities in Lancaster and York counties. Each woman also receives socks and personal care items, along with a card about the project that explains that the gift is in memory of Sharon.
Angie contacts the facilities and gets a list of each woman’s first name, nightgown size and favorite color. “We custom shop for every person,” Angie said. “We ask things like if they want short sleeves or long sleeves, a nightgown or a twopiece set.” Angie also labels each nightgown with the woman’s name so it’s easy to keep track of in the facilities.
Nanny’s Nightgowns is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, and Bob noted that the operation is a simple one. “We have
no overhead,” he said. “Everything that is donated to us goes to the cause. We have no inventory. We buy the items specifically for the people who will be getting them.”
The organization relies on donations to provide the gifts, and Bob noted that anyone who gives $100 or more is invited to accompany the pair when they distribute the gift bags. “I think the visits are really eye opening for a lot of people,” he said.
Bob and Sharon were married for 53 years, and Bob remembers his wife as someone who loved the beach and enjoyed traveling, shopping, sewing and cooking. When Angie approached him about starting Nanny’s Nighties, he was all in. “It brings me such joy that we can do this,” he said.
For Angie, the project is about more than just helping others. “I started this nonprofit sort of for selfish reasons,” she stated. “I didn’t want a day to go by that I didn’t think of my mom. I always want to have some reason to say my mom’s name.”

As director of the Eastern York Food Pantry, Jim Martin gets to know the clients well. Recently, he noticed something.
“We’re starting to get a lot of senior citizens coming to us, and they are having trouble getting in, because we are located in the basement,” he explained of the pantry that’s housed at Wrightsville Hope United Methodist Church, 404 Hellam St. See Lift pg 2
Bechtold began serving the meal in the 1990s, when she took over as director of the Columbia Senior Center. “I was a little upset when I realized I was asked to give up my Christmas Day to do this, but I soon found I really enjoyed it,” she said. “When I see the seniors smile, it makes me happy.”

Martin initiated a project to install a chair lift at the pantry, reaching out for donations. “We rely on 10 or 12 different churches who do food collections for us as well as individuals who support us,” he stated. “We sent letters to businesses and organizations in the area for donations first, because we didn’t want to put all the burden on the people who are already supporting us.”
The Rotary Club of Eastern York County heard the call and recently presented a check for $1,000 to the chair lift project. It’s just part of the Rotary’s mission to support the local community, said Rotarian Phil Lehman.
Martin noted that the chair lift project will cost a little over $10,000, and the chair lift itself has already been purchased. He’s hoping it will be installed by Christmas.
The Eastern York Food Pantry served about 100 clients last year, Martin said, and the numbers are going up. “We’re averaging about seven new clients a month,” he stated. “A lot of them are senior citizens.”
The pantry is open Mondays and Wednesdays. Clients call on those mornings to schedule a time to come in, Martin explained. “They do their own shopping,” he shared. “They can come in twice a month, and we are open to anyone in the Eastern York School District.” Clients are asked about income, but only an ID to show local residency is required to receive food.
Clients can shop for a variety of food, from shelf-stable items to fresh fruit and vegetables. The pantry also stocks cleaning supplies and toiletries.
“We are funded just by donations, and ever since the pandemic started, we are seeing more people come in,” Martin said. “The price of everything has gone up as well, so we are really relying on organizations and individuals to support us.”
He said he knows he can count on that support, adding, “We have a very generous community.”
To sign up as a client with the Eastern York Food Pantry, call 717-252-2609 on Mondays or Wednesdays between 9 and 11:30 a.m. The pantry is also looking for volunteers and is always accepting donations. To learn more about volunteering or donating, call Martin at 717-392-9715.
The 36th annual Lancaster County Project for the Needy (LCPN) holiday dinner giveaway has partnered with the United Way of Lancaster and UPMC Pinnacle Health to provide a complete holiday meal for families throughout Lancaster County on Saturday, Dec. 17. Once again, the holiday meal distribution will take place by delivery only; there will be no pickup location.
Families must preregister for this event by calling the United Way’s 211 or 855567-5341 by Friday, Dec. 9. A volunteer will deliver the holiday meal to registered participants on the morning of Dec. 17.
The project anticipates distributing approximately 3,000 boxes of turkey dinners with all the trimmings to low-income families across Lancaster County throughout the holiday season. The main supporters of this year’s distribution are UPMC Pinnacle Health Plan, GFL Environmental Inc., Matthew 25, Stroehmann Bakeries, Giant Foods, Pepperidge
Farms, Four Seasons Produce, Keener Potatoes, and Packaging Corporation of America.
In addition to this year’s partnership with the United Way of Lancaster, LCPN will also continue its partnerships with Elizabethtown Community Homeless Outreach Services, Conestoga Valley Christian Community Services (CVCCS), the Columbia Lions, The Factory Ministries, Mission Food Pantry, Ephrata Area Social Services, and Solanco Food Pantry to provide meals to families in designated areas.
LCPN is still seeking donations to offset the cost of purchasing the groceries for the dinner. LCPN relies on individual donations for over two-thirds of the resources needed to fund the food distribution. Monetary donations can be made online at www.lcpn.org. For information on donating by mail, call Tom Fasnacht at 717-5698521. LCPN is a nonprofit group relying solely on public donations and volunteers.

Gala To Benefit Maytown Historical Society
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
Food, fun, art and an auction will highlight the Maytown Historical Society’s Christmas Gala. The event will be held on Thursday, Dec. 15, at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 11 N. Queen St., Maytown, beginning at 6 p.m. This will be the first time the annual event has been held since 2019, said Janie Garber, treasurer of the historical society. “We always have a really great meal,” Garber stated, noting that the dinner will be catered by Country Home. The dinner will be served family style and will include tossed salad, stuffed chicken breast, mashed potatoes, mixed vegetables, beverages and homemade pies with ice cream.
After dinner, entertainment will be provided by artist Elva Hurst, who will do a “chalk talk.” “She will create a picture of our choice, and as she is drawing the picture, she will be speaking about it,” Garber explained. Hurst is known for her motivational, entertaining and inspiring talks. At the gala, she will complete a farm memories drawing. She finishes her work with a black light and colored light show that brings the work to life. “She’ll create a large picture, and then we’re going to turn around and auction it off to
Seniors
raise money for the historical society,” Garber said.
Additional items to be auctioned off include a table runner hand-quilted by Deb Gepfer and a “chunky blanket,” made with thicker, heavier yarn, created by Garber.
“We also have selected a few items from our museum storage, and we’re bringing them out for the auction,” Garber said. The items will include Maytown pottery and a basket.
Proceeds from the gala will benefit the Maytown Historical Society’s museum and the society’s future expansion. “People have been so gracious in donating things to us, and now we need to expand,” Gar-
ber said, noting that money will also help with the society’s operating costs.
She encourages everyone to come to the gala for a fun night out. “It’s good food, lots of fellowship with neighbors and the opportunity to support a community organization,” she said.
Tickets for the gala will be sold at the Maytown Post Office, 1 W. High St., from 8 to 10 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 3, or may be purchased by calling Linda Good at 717725-2437. There are separate prices for adults and children, and children age 3 and under may attend for free. Tickets must be ordered by Saturday, Dec. 10.

She noted that the giveaway is a community effort, and she emphasized that help is especially needed this year.
Each senior not only takes home a meal but also receives a bag of grocery items and small treats such as cookies or candy. “The cost of everything has gone up, so we really need donations,” Bechtold said.
The Columbia Lions Club supports the project, and Bechtold receives discount grocery items from Blessings of Hope, but she said she’d gladly accept donations from individuals as well. Anything that is left over from the meal is donated to the Veterans Affairs hospital and personal care homes in the area.
Bechtold said she hopes to return to in-person dining next year, and she noted that the meal has never been canceled, even during the height of the pandemic. “We get people from all over Lancaster County and York, and we’ve
even had people come from out of state,” she said. “If a senior needs or wants a meal for Christmas, they can get one.”
Providing the meal also requires help from many volunteers, Bechtold remarked, noting that helpers include members of the Donegal High School wrestling team, who
set up and assemble goodie bags on Christmas Eve. A core group of about a dozen people help with the meal, some of whom have volunteered since the beginning, Bechtold said.
Meals will be available by reservation only. To reserve a meal, call Bechtold at 717397-2267 or Luzader at 717684-0128 by Friday, Dec. 16.

Find Unique Gifts At St. Phillip’s Craft Fair
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD
St. Phillip the Apostle Church, 2111 Millersville Pike, Lancaster, will host dozens of vendors for its yearly holiday craft fair on Saturday, Dec. 3, from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. The free event will offer food available to be purchased in addition to different handmade crafts. Parking will be offered in the church’s upper and lower parking lots, the latter of which is handicapped-accessible. Fifty-eight unique vendors will
sell their crafts at the fair, including pottery, woodworking items, jewelry, candy, gift baskets, stained-glass décor, Christmas ornaments and holiday cards. The vendors will be spread across both the church’s upper and lower levels.
Dona Antonelli, one of the vendors, has been participating in the event for over six years. Antonelli fashions jewelry out of recycled materials and items that would otherwise end up in a landfill, such as aluminum cans, credit cards and
Styrofoam. “I wanted to do something different,” Antonelli said. “My daughter is a strong proponent for recycling and environmental awareness; we came up with the idea together.” Antonelli has a degree in studio art from West Chester University and has worked as a graphic designer since graduating. For more information Antonelli’s work, visit www.desertdreamsdesignstudio.com.
The Lancaster Public Library will also sell books at the fair, and the church’s Knights of Columbus will sell breakfast and lunch from the parish kitchen. “It’s a nice way to spread Christmas cheer,” said Jackie Roberts of the women’s club. “(The fair) gets you in the holiday spirit, and it’s a great time to buy unique Christmas gifts.”
The craft fair is organized by the St. Phillip’s Women’s Auxiliary group, which has been coordinating the annual event for 27 years. “We started (the craft fair) to fundraise for our group and allow us to make donations to the church and different local charities,” said Anne Marie
Dunn, a member of the women’s group. The group itself will operate two stands; one will sell handcrafted items made by group members, and the other will sell baked goods such as cookies and brownies.
Over the years, the women’s group at St. Phillip’s has assisted with several projects within the church, such as purchasing a new refrigerator for the kitchen and funding remodeling in the building. The group also supports the community in different ways by buying flowers and gifts for residents of local nursing homes around the holidays and making meals for the homeless twice a year at St. Mary’s Church in Lancaster city. After cooking the meals, members will bring them to St. Mary’s and distribute them alongside multiple other churches in the county.
“Our goal is to provide fellowship to women of the parish and financially support the church through its projects and community outreach,” said Roberts.
Wellness Event Planned For First Responders
Responder Rehab, a charity wellness event celebrating first responders, will take place on Monday, Dec. 5, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Switchboard Studios and Gallery, above the Columbia Kettle Works at 40 N. Third St., Columbia. The event will be presented by Bumbling Circus Workshop.
1st Sgt. Albert Storm Jr., a retired Army combat veteran, will teach an introductory
yoga class for local first responders. After a severe spinal/pelvic injury, Storm, 63, himself a volunteer firefighter with Blue Rock Fire Rescue, found his way back to health through the practice of yoga. He hopes to share the knowledge gained in his years of practice with law enforcement officers, firefighters, medics and other first responders.
Responders will also be
treated to chair massage, refreshments and other wellness opportunities. This event is offered free of charge to local first responders. Families and guests may join their responders in the pub downstairs after the class as Columbia Kettle Works will offer discounts for participants as well as drink specials benefiting the cause.
Space is limited. To register, email Storm at bumbling

Mychal’s Message, a nonprofit organization, will hold its ninth annual “Wish” event to raise funds to provide Christmas dinner and gifts for hundreds of Lancaster County children and their families. “Wish” is a two-hour, full-length, original Christmas musical, which will be presented on Sunday, Dec. 4, and Monday, Dec. 5, at Dutch Apple Dinner Theatre, 510 Centerville Road, Lancaster. Dinner will begin at 5:30 p.m., and the show will start at 7 p.m.
Working in partnership with the Lancaster Families in Transition Office, local families are selected to receive a full-course Christmas dinner and gifts for their children. This year, 34 families were selected with a total of 94 children to benefit from “Wish.” Each of those children was asked to list a few gifts he or she would like to receive on Christmas.
Shannon Lapp, who found-
ed Mychal’s Message at the age of 11 in 2002, purchases the gifts, which are then wrapped by cast members and delivered to the families along with the meal. This year’s deliveries will take place on Saturday, Dec. 17, at McCaskey High School, Lancaster.
Funds to support the project are raised primarily through ticket sales for “Wish,” which has taken place at the Dutch Apple Dinner Theatre every year since 2014, with nearly every show selling out. Alvina Kline, owner of Encore Dance Center, partners with Mychal’s Message in offering rehearsal space every weekend from October through December at her studio in Lancaster.
A basket and giveaway drawing will be held this year to offset the rising costs of toys and meals, and many businesses in the community have donated items; these donors include Speckled Hen in Strasburg, Hot
Z Pizza in Landisville, Bounce Kraze and Sweet Frog in Lancaster and Giant Food Stores. The Lancaster Red Rose Doll Club donated the money to purchase the 35 Barbie dolls requested by this year’s children.
“Wish” is written, choreographed, and directed by a creative team that includes Lapp’s siblings, Christopher and Erin Mary Lynch, and a family friend, Becca Bender, along with others who have helped choreograph this year’s show - Kristen Zimmerman, a dance instructor at Encore Dance Center, and Leah Brighter, a cast member of “Wish.” The show is performed entirely by volunteers from kindergarten students to recent college graduates. The cast’s collective experience includes performances at American Music Theatre, Sight & Sound Theatre, the Fulton Theatre and the Dutch Apple Dinner Theatre. This year’s show includes tap-dancing

Volunteers Donate Time To Keep York Beautiful
Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful’s local county affiliate, Keep York Beautiful, recently hosted 15 volunteers from the Giant Company who helped prepare Cottage Hill Garden for winter.
Volunteers dug out and removed old compost and decaying mulch and brought in new straw bales in preparation for planting. In the spring, easily accessible straw bale gardens will be planted with organic produce and flowers and maintained by community volunteers. Much of what is grown is donated to food banks and neighborhood groups.
Cottage Hill Garden and other community gardens are located at former trash-filled vacant lots throughout York city that are owned by the city of York and managed by the Redevelopment Authority of York. The gardens also serve as outdoor classrooms and provide a place for friends, neighbors and families to gather.
Multiple urban gardens, including Cottage Hill Garden, are a part of York Fresh Food Farms, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization whose mission is to cultivate community health through access, affordability and agriculture. The organization serves to increase access to safe, healthy food choices and build a healthier community through the operation of sustainable, organic, community-based gardens and a demonstration farm.
