hen Susquehanna Stage first performed “All Is Calm” five years ago, the cast wasn’t sure how the audience was reacting to the 80-minute show. “There really isn’t a break in the action, and there’s no intermission, so the audience was very quiet,” recalled Jim Johnson, who is directing the show again this year. “We were wondering what they thought, and then when it ended, they just burst into applause.” The show was so well received, in fact, that all performances sold out from word of mouth after opening night. “All Is Calm” will run at Susquehanna Stage, 133 W. Market St., Marietta, from Friday, Dec. 3 through Sunday, Dec. 12. Performances will be at 7:30 p.m. on Dec. 3, Saturday, Dec. 4, Thursday, Dec. 9, Friday, Dec. 10 and

His castmate Clint Burdick agreed, adding, “It’s an honor to tell their stories. There’s laughter and there’s sadness in this show. It’s a show full of emotions.” Performing with a minimal set, the actors are all on stage for the entire show and the musical numbers are performed a capella. This setup presents some challenges, said cast member Alex Flattery. “You can’t rely on the pit orchestra for your pitch,” he said. “You have to rely on the guys to the left and right of you.” Dean Sauder said rehearsing for the show has been a unique experience. “It’s the highlight of my day to come and rehearse and to be able to participate in this show,” he stated. “It’s challenging, but it’s so rewarding to be a part of this.” The emotional pull of performing in “All Is Calm” was so great that nine of the 12 cast members from the previous production have

returned for this year’s performance. Sturgis urges audiences to pay particular attention to the show’s epilogue. “It really pulls everything together,” he noted, adding that the show emphasizes our shared humanity even in the midst of conflict. “It will get you thinking, ‘Why do we do this? Why do we have war? Why do fight with each other?’” Johnson said it’s not common practice for Susquehanna Stage to repeat a show so soon, but this one made such an impact he wanted to do it again. “I just love the theme of this show, the idea of peace,” he remarked. “This is not a typical Christmas show - there’s no Santa. It’s not ‘A Christmas Carol.’ It’s a different kind of Christmas show about a real moment in time when time stood still and there was peace on Earth.” For more information or to purchase tickets, visit www.susquehannastage.com.

Saturday, Dec. 11. Performances will be at 2 p.m. on Dec. 11 and 12, and at 7 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 5. Featuring an all-male cast of 12, the show tells the true story of a Christmas truce struck between the German and Allied soldiers at the start of World War I in 1914. “On Christmas Eve, the troops came together, shared stories, played a soccer game and celebrated Christmas,” explained Steve Sturgis, who performs in the show. He added that the peace ended the next day when the war resumed. The conflict continued for another four years. The story of “All Is Calm” is told through actual letters from soldiers, making it an emotional experience, said performer Rob Hein. “There’s a poignancy to this show,” he remarked. “These events actually happened, so to be able to share the stories of these soldiers is very moving.”

Over the past 31 years, the Columbia Borough Shade Tree Commission has planted more than 900 trees in the community, bringing beauty and environmental benefits to the town. The Columbia Tree Society, which is the fundraising auxiliary for the commission, has begun its annual membership drive for 2022. The Columbia Borough Shade Tree Commission strives to encourage street tree plantings as well as the addition of trees in yards, parks and public places, said William Kloidt, Columbia Arbor Day chairperson. “Shade trees are important to Columbia as they supply natural cover from the hot sun in the summer and serve as wind breakers in winter and spring, which provide practical benefits such as lower heating and air-conditioning costs,” he noted. “In the fall they provide an inspirational assortment of colors when the

and five enclosed, heated pavilions. The spirit of the holiday is conveyed using animation, displays, food, and a train display. The event includes hot chocolate and photo opportunities. Christmas Magic is sponsored by the York County Department of Parks and Recreation. It began in 1984, the product of the “energy crunch,” when fewer homes were decorating yet there was still a desire to see Christmas lights locally. In the event’s first year, a small budget allowed for 10,000 lights and props, most produced by the Parks Department. Today, the

props are produced commercially and in-house. It takes about six months to set up, run, and disassemble Christmas Magic. Separate fees have been set for adults and for youths ages 6 to 14 to attend Christmas Magic. Children age 5 and under will receive free admission. Prepurchased, timed-entry tickets are required; walk-ins will not be permitted. Tickets will be available, while supplies last, by visiting www.christmasmagicyork.com or calling 717-840-7440 and choosing option 2.They may also be purchased in person or

by phone at John Rudy Park Administrative Headquarters on Mondays to Fridays from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with the office closed from 12:30 to 1 p.m. daily. The park is located at 400 Mundis Race Road, York. The trail may be closed due to inclement weather, with the decision made as early as possible. To find out the status of the trail, contact the Christmas Magic hotline by calling 717-840-7440 and pressing 4, then 2. Treasury Warns Of Text Message Scam The Pennsylvania Treasury has advised state residents that scammers are using fraudulent text messages to target recipients of unemployment compensation benefits, potentially including normal unemployment compensation (UC), Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA), and Federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation (FPUC). One message inaccurately tells recipients that their state-issued ReliaCard account has been temporarily frozen. The message then encourages recipients to clink on a link to verify their identity and card status. Individuals should not click

on the link. Neither the Pennsylvania Treasury nor the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry ever embed a link in a text message. Any text that includes a link and claims to be from these agencies should not be trusted. Individuals should note that it is important to never provide any personally identifiable information, user IDs, or passwords unless they initiated the conversation by contacting the agency directly. Lisa Kalinowski, founder of CoJoMotion Dance Company of the Lititz Academy of Dance and the organizer of “A Season for Wishes,” is thrilled to be able to hold a live event this year. “What a blessing!” exclaimed Kalinowski. “This is always so joyous, and we are always so grateful for this opportunity.” The 2020 event was held virtually at Penn Cinema. “After everything that has happened in our world since our last live performance in 2019, there is a whole huge extra layer of gratitude this year,” noted Kalinowski. More than 40 dancers will take part in the 17th annual “A Season for Wishes” presentation, which will be held on Saturday, Dec. 11, at 6 p.m. at Lancaster Mennonite High School, 2176 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster. Doors will open at 5 p.m. This traditional holiday show benefits Make-AWish Philadelphia, Delaware & Susquehanna Valley. Along with a variety of musical numbers performed by members of the CoJoMotion Dance Company, the show will feature local singers and instrumentalists. Prizes, giveaways, and opportunities to donate will be part of the event.

Rockette-style kicklines will be part of the live “A Season for Wishes” presentation.

Styles for the 26 numbers will range from tap, jazz, and ballet to modern, lyrical, and musical theater. Kalinowski was able to bring back Rockette-style pieces, which were not possible last year, for songs such as “Jingle Bell Rock,” “Cool Yule,” “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree,” and “Parade of the Wooden Soldiers.” Pieces inspired by “The Nutcracker” will include “Waltz of the Flowers” and

we’ve raised over $380,000,” said Kalinowski, who is hoping to reach a milestone with this show, noting that “$400,000 would be pretty wonderful.” Tickets may be purchased by emailing Cojo_Wishes@ LititzAcademyofDance.com. More information may be found by searching Facebook for “CoJoMotion Dance Company” or “Lititz Academy of Dance.”

Yuletide Memories And Christmas Joy BY CATHY MOLITORIS

At “Joy to the World,” presented by Servant Stage Company, audiences can expect “a little bit of everything you would associate with Christmas,” said Johnathan Bauer, executive director, adding, “I think the opening medley has something like 50 Christmas carols in it.” “Joy to the World” will open at 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 3, at The Junction Center, 1875

Junction Road, Manheim, with additional performances at 11 a.m., 3 and 7 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 4, and 3 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 5. Billed as a theatrical celebration, the show will feature all of the traditions of Christmas, Bauer said. “There will be lots of music, lots of singing and lots of dancing throughout the show,” he stated. “You’ll hear everything from nostalgic songs like Bing Crosby’s ‘White Christmas’ to more traditional, sacred songs.” At just about an hour in length, the show is perfect for audiences of all ages, he said. “It’s a really family-friendly event, and it features a cast of amazing talent. The singers and dancers are phenomenal.” The cast includes Grace Atherholt, Brittany Adair Adkins, Becca Goebel, Joshua William Green, David Hewitt, Kayla Klase, Carly Lafferty, Nolen Petrosky, Nik Olson, Shaun Ressler and Emily

Wick. Servant Stage artistic director Wally Calderon serves as director and choreographer, with Scott Williams directing the music and accompanying. “I love this show, because it covers every Christmas experience for our audience,” Calderon stated. “It will make them laugh, provide a moment to breathe and take a break from the stress of life and make them remember the true meaning of the season.” Servant Stage Company is a nonprofit theater serving Lancaster County since 2011 and bringing entertainment to more than 50,000 audience members each year. All performances are offered at paywhat-you-will prices, as part of Servant Stage’s mission to make great performances accessible to everyone in the community. Artist Blacksmiths Plan Gallery Meeting For Paradise BY ANN MEAD ASH

All types of metalwork will be on display at the Pennsylvania Artist Blacksmiths’ Association gallery meeting.

“(That interest is) mainly blacksmithing or forging, but we also have some people who do tinsmithing, silversmithing, general fabricating, and other disciplines within the umbrella of metalwork,” Shultz said. The group holds regular meetings, all of which are open to the public. Meetings are often held at a member’s shop or historic blacksmith shop and include demonstrations of certain skills or projects. The gallery meeting, which is always held in December, is traditionally located in Paradise. “We call it our gallery meeting because it is a little different than the rest of our meetings,” said Shultz, who noted that the meeting is a showcase of metal-related items. “Members bring in examples of what they worked on throughout the year or collections they might have of antique tools or things they want to sell.” Another highlight of the event is the Ironmaster of the Day competition. “Any member can make an item designated for that competition,” explained Shultz, who said that the items are displayed at Stanley Newcomer of Mount Joy holds an iron rose door knock- the meeting and voted on to rounding states,” said Shultz of the 20-year-old group, which boasts about 200 members who have a general interest in working with metal.

determine which maker will be Ironmaster of the Day. This year’s designated item to create is a holiday wreath. “The person who makes (a wreath for the competition) creates their interpretation of a metal holiday wreath,” said Shultz. “They are all making the same thing, but there are so many variations on how people approach making that item.” According to Shultz, interest in the craft of blacksmithing has grown recently. “Blacksmithing ... has seen a great resurgence in the last four years, because of television reality shows like ‘Forged in Fire,’” he said. “One of the best ways to get into the hobby is to join an association like PABA, where you can go to meetings and see demonstrations about how to work with metal,” he noted. “The (attendees) will be rubbing elbows and talking with experienced (crafters).” Shultz added that the organization has a lending library that features several hundred volumes of books, DVDs, and periodicals. For more information, readers may search for “PABA PA Artist Blacksmiths’ Association” on Facebook.

The Salvation Army is preparing to serve over 6,000 individuals from the greater Lancaster area with food, toys, and winter wear. The donations received through the annual Red Kettle Campaign help to make this and yearlong Salvation Army programs possible. The campaign

Beloved dishes and comfort foods often share positive elements, notably their flavor and ability to quell hunger pangs. However, various popular dishes are often made from ingredients that are high in saturated fats and calories. Certain foods also may be cooked using less healthy techniques, such as frying. However, being fit and healthy does not mean having to give up tasty comfort foods. Just about any recipe can get a healthy makeover, and people may consider the following cooking tips to make dishes a little more nutritious. One healthier method of cooking is using an air fryer. With the crispy coating and juicy interior of foods made through regular frying come the addition of fat and calories from the oil. Air fryers can simulate the benefits of deep frying without these negative side effects. An air fryer uses heat and air (convection) to mimic the results of deep frying with little to no oil. Home cooks may also ditch the cream in dishes like fettuccine alfredo. Using low-fat milk that is

thickened with flour or cornstarch instead of cream can make such dishes a little healthier. Another substitution is using thick Greek yogurt instead of mayonnaise or sour cream in creamy and tangy foods like potato salad and coleslaw. Greek yogurt adds live and active cultures that can improve gut health, and it also cuts down on the calories and fat in the recipe. Greek yogurt also can be used in onion or vegetable dips for snack platters. Cooking with the right pans can make foods more nutritious, as well. Cast-iron, nonstick or enamel-coated pans and skillets require less oil or butter to prevent foods from sticking. When it comes to seasoning, people can replace salt with other herbs and spices that can add flavor without extra sodium. In addition, they should always taste the recipe before adding more salt, as it may be fine without it, suggests Harvard Medical School. Tweaking recipes can make it possible to enjoy one’s favorite foods without sacrificing nutrition.

“What’s really interesting with this craft is that it combines the skills of working with different metals, mainly steel, and the creative artistic design elements that people incorporate into the item,” said Luke Shultz, member of the Pennsylvania Artist Blacksmiths’ Association (PABA). “We call ourselves artist blacksmiths, as opposed to the traditional (image) of a blacksmith from 200 years ago.” The PABA gallery meeting will be held on Saturday, Dec. 11, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Paradise Community Center, 6 Londonvale Road, Paradise, located just off Route 30.
