he story of the birth of Jesus will come to life from 5 to 8 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 12, when Susquehanna Grace Community Church (SGCC), 6694 Sunrise Ave., Wrightsville, invites the public to travel on the Road to Bethlehem. The church has been presenting the drive-through Nativity for decades, said Nikki Sandman, a member of the church outreach team. “The young families of SGCC over 40 years ago wanted to have a Christmas event for their children and families of the community that celebrated the true meaning of Christmas,” she explained. Visitors to Road to Bethlehem can expect a fun, family-friendly way to celebrate the Christmas holiday. “The Nativity includes 11 scenes
captures the attention of all who drive through. This year, Road to Bethlehem gives families the opportunity to make Christmas memories without getting out of the car.” In past years, the event included some indoor activities, but that has changed this year. “This year, in respect of public health and safety, we are hosting the live Nativity as a drive-throughonly event, with no indoor entertainment,” Sandman stated. “It’s still a great night to spend with your family. We encourage families to pack their car with good snacks, warm blankets and cameras. This is a night where the ‘no contact’ of the land can’t outshine the connection to the Lord Jesus.” For more information on the event, readers may visit SGCC’s Facebook page, www.facebook.com/ contagiouschurch.sgcc or follow the church on Instagram at https://insta gram.com/contagiouschurch_sgcc.

The driveway is lined with luminarias, and visitors can listen in their cars to our radio station playing a variety of Christmas songs.” According to Sandman, the church continues to offer the event for one reason: Love. “(It’s about) our love for Jesus Christ,” she stated, “and our love for the community.” The event is free, but food and monetary donations will be accepted for Hearts for Hunger, a food pantry serving Red Lion and surrounding areas. “Road to Bethlehem is an event that reminds families of the true meaning of Christmas,” Sandman said. “The live Nativity is a unique way to bring the Bible to life and
While DreamWrights typically offers live performances on stage, this year required some creative thinking, said Kate Harmon, marketing coordinator. “We have been constantly looking for ways to adapt in these times, and we figured we could engage people through Zoom for rehearsals and still ‘get together’ in a sense,” she ex plained. “Our actors will come in one by one to record their parts so can we piece things together and keep everyone safe.” Amanda Nowell, guest director for “The Grinch Who Stole Christmas,” noted that the radio showcase will offer people a new way to ex perience theater. “It is a true radio show, like the Fireside Chats with FDR,” she stated.

“We did not want to stop doing it this year, even though we had to make some changes,” Bechtold said. “We know seniors need this, and this year, they need it more than ever.” The free lunch is open to any seniors who are looking for a little fellowship on Christmas Day. “It’s not just for Columbia residents,” she stated. “It’s for any senior who is going to be alone on Christmas Day. We are not going to turn anyone away.” While the meal will not be the typical sit-down format, seniors are still welcome to come inside for a brief visit as they pick up their lunch. “They can come in, have a cup of coffee and stay for a few
moments while they get their meal to go,” Bechtold explained. Masks will be required, and social distancing will be enforced. The lunch will include turkey, ham, mashed potatoes, filling, gravy, vegetables, fruit salad and dessert. Each bagged lunch will also include a small gift as well as some additional food items. “We’ll be filling the bag with enough food to last the senior for the rest of the month,” Bechtold said. Bechtold and Luzader began working on the event in September. It is truly a community effort, Bechtold explained, noting that the Donegal High School wrestling team will help set
up the night before the lunch and local firefighters and other volunteers will work in the kitchen. The meal is made possible by donations from community organizations and individuals, she noted, adding that more donations are still needed. To make a reservation or to donate to the lunch, readers may call Bechtold at 717-3972267 or Luzader at 717-6840128.
“This lunch has been a Christmas tradition in Columbia for 33 years,” Bechtold remarked. “Our seniors need this, and our community needs this. We will miss their hugs this year - seniors are notorious for hugging - but we’ll be here for them just in a new way. We want them to know that we’re thinking about them. We haven’t forgotten about them.”

YCL launched the 1000 Books Before Kindergarten program in October 2018. The early childhood initiative is an offshoot of a national program, and YCL put its own spin on the program to encourage York County families to read with their young children. Since the program’s inception at YCL, participating children and their parents, grandparents and caregivers have collectively read 502,741 books. During the ceremony, York County president commissioner Julie Wheeler congratulated the children and their
families for the accomplishment of reading 1,000 books. Returning to celebrate this year’s 1000 Books achievers was children’s author Kelly Starling Lyons. The 2020 Caldecott Honor recipient was part of YCL’s inaugural celebration in 2019. She is the author of 17 books and has also won a Coretta Scott King Award for her work. Children from the day they are born to the day they start kindergarten can participate in the program. All that is needed to participate is a free YCL card. All YCL locations participate in the program, and registration is open yearround. The program is free for all participants due to the support of Stock & Leader and C&S Wholesale Grocers.

Each year, the York County Economic Alliance (YCEA) invites the community to celebrate the holiday season at its annual “Light Up Our Lot tree lighting. This holiday season, the YCEA will showcase community members’ festive decorations and outdoor displays. All York County businesses, residents, municipalities and nonprofit organizations are invited to participate. After participants decorate their home or business for the holidays and flip on the lights, they may send the YCEA photos or a short video. The YCEA will combine the submissions into a holiday video for everyone to enjoy. In addition, YCEA will recognize outstanding decorations in several award categories. The winner of each category will be recognized publicly and receive a York County prize pack. All photos and videos must be submitted by 6 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 10. The video of all submissions will premiere on YouTube on Friday, Dec. 18, at 6 p.m. For more information and to upload photos or a video, readers may visit http://business.ycea -pa.org/events/details/light -up-your-lot-yoco-9943.

Owen Strickler (left), Peyton Zimmer (center), and Joe Zelis of Boy Scout Troop 25 recently earned their Eagle Scout Awards.
Three Scouts from Troop 25 in East York have earned the highest advancement rank in Scouts BSA, the Eagle Scout. Owen Strickler, Joseph Zelis, and Peyton Zimmer received their awards from Troop 25 Scoutmaster Perry Bevivino during Troop 25’s Court of Honor held on Sept. 29 at the event tent at Heritage Hills Golf Resort in York. For his Eagle Scout service project, Owen, son of Jody and Tim Strickler, permanently marked the 5K course at John Rudy County Park. He supervised fellow Scouts and adults in replacing 29 temporary markers with permanent 6-by-6-inch wood posts, and then 5K identifier plaques were attached to the posts along with directional arrows and post caps. The project took a total of 386 hours. Having started out as a Tiger Cub, Owen has been a Scout for 10 years and has earned 38 merit badges. Owen is currently a junior at Central York High School and is interested in studying science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) in college. For his Eagle Scout service project, Joseph, son of David and Christi Zelis, reorganized
the St. Joseph Catholic Church Parish shed. He built new shelves and stabilized some of the existing ones. The project took a total of 106 hours to complete for Joseph and his adult and Scout helpers. Having starting out as a Tiger Cub, Joseph has been a Scout for 11 years and has earned 24 merit badges. Joseph is currently a senior at York Catholic High School. He is interested in studying engineering at the Pennsylvania State University. For his Eagle Scout service project, Peyton, son of Tracy Coleman and Daren Zimmer, built shelves in a closet for the PTO at Central York High
