SERVING THE LOCAL COMMUNITIES SINCE 1954

VOL LXI • NO 44

Columbia Market House Will Open In Spring BY CATHY MOLITORIS

community hub is coming together at 15 S. Third St. in Columbia. That’s the location of the Columbia Market House, set to open in May 2021. The market is a joint project between CHI St. Joseph Children’s Health and Columbia Borough. “Construction began on the site in October 2019,” said Kelsey Miller, healthy communities manager for CHI St. Joseph Children’s Health. “We’ve been in talks with the borough since 2018.” The idea for the market fits nicely with CHI St. Joseph’s Healthy Columbia initiative, which is part of the organization’s strategy to create a healthy community, Miller said. “We wanted to offer the people of Columbia a place to get locally grown produce, baked goods and other fresh foods,” she explained. The Columbia Market House will have room for about 20 vendors inside, along with an outdoor market area and space for events. CHI St. Joseph is in talks with Gypsy Kitchen, a Lancaster-based

A

restaurant, for a full-service restaurant on site as well. “The building is designed to be a flexible space and is being intentionally built that way, so we have lots of options,” Miller said. She noted that the market building dates to 1869, and the new project is a way to bring back a oncethriving spot in Columbia. “When this was built 150 years ago, the market was a gathering place for the community and a place for people to access local goods,” she stated. “Just like in the past, it doesn’t matter what your background is or who you are; everyone will be welcome at the market.” She is excited about the opportunity to connect with the community through the market and said great things are in store for the space. “What really draws me into this project is knowing how this building is going to interact with the community and the impact it is going to have on the people who live in this community,” she remarked. “We are so excited to get this off the ground and get this going. We can’t wait to open.”

Kelsey Miller, healthy communities manager for CHI St. Joseph Children’s Health, says great things are in store at the Columbia Market House, set to open in May 2021.

located in York/Hellam Township, will host the course that is run by Mark Gingrich, owner of Gingrich Apiaries in Dover. “This is a two-year program, and it’s designed to be a stepping stone to beekeeping,” Gingrich said. “You need no background in bees. You just need to consider two things: One, make sure you are not allergic to bees, or if you are, be able to manage that allergy, and two, you need a desire to learn how to manage bees.”

The program will begin on Wednesday, Jan. 20, 2021, and the first three monthly meetings are classroom sessions. Participants will learn about the basics of beekeeping along with focusing on the biology of it. “The Horn Farm is all about education and teaching, so this fits in very nicely with that,” Gingrich stated. Beginning in April, the group will move outside and begin hands-on work with bees. Second-year participants are mixed in with first-year students and that is designed to encourage mentoring, Gingrich noted. Over the spring and summer, participants will manage bees in their own colony, and they will take them home and winter the colony before bringing the bees back for the second year of the program. “In the second year, we get more into sustainability and advanced beekeeping techniques,” Gingrich explained. He loves beekeeping because it’s easy to do and it has so many environmental benefits. “Beekeeping is kind of a backyard hobby, like gardening, and you get a reward from beekeeping when you get honey,” he explained. “It’s not overly time-consuming. You might invest an hour or two every other week throughout the summer months, and you get the whole winter off while the colonies manage themselves.” He also emphasized the important role bees play in the environment, noting that 75% of all plant life requires insect pollination. “Bees have been on a decline for the last 30 years,” he said. “It’s a slow and gradual decline, and it’s the result of lots of different things, but everyone who keeps bees is contributing back to creating a healthy ecosystem for all of us.”

Beekeeping class participants will manage their own colonies of bees.

Give Local York, a 24-hour giving event, will return on Friday, May 7, 2021. In the three years since its founding, Give Local York has raised a total of $8 million for local nonprofits from more than 15,000 donors from across the region, state, country, and world. In 2020, in the midst of the pandemic, more than 11,000 donors made a gift to support more than 300 local organizations, together raising $3.5 million dollars. The goal for Give Local York 2021 is to see 13,500 donors make a gift. Registration to participate in Give Local York is open to all 501(c)(3) organizations whose

work benefits York County. Registration is now open at www.givelocalyork.org. Starting this year, all nonprofit organizations are required to demonstrate that they have an anti-discrimination policy in place in order to participate in Give Local York. The White Rose Leadership Institute will remain apprised regarding current CDC guidelines and Pennsylvania Department of Health mandates to determine whether public events will be prudent during Give Local York 2021. Give Local York will once again definitely have a virtual/livestreaming component.

Proceeds from the event benefit veterans who use services at the Lebanon VA Medical Center. “Last year, we raised $33,000,” said Tyler Stumpf, ride organizer. “Over the years, we have raised $193,000.” Money is raised through the entry fee for the ride as well as sales of T-shirts and patches. Typically, the event would also include a meal after the ride and a silent auction, but that has changed this year due to COVID-19 restrictions. Instead, organizers are looking for donations of items for veterans or financial contributions. “The event will be held completely outside this year,” Stumpf noted. “We’ll have a trailer in the parking lot to collect things for veterans like toiletries, stamps and prepaid phone cards.” The 25-mile ride follows a route along the Susquehanna River and concludes at the Elizabethtown American Legion Post 329, 240 N. community. PBA president David E. Schwager noted that Creme, who served as the PBA’s 201112 president, has provided pro bono legal support to the association over a number of years. Most recently, Creme led the team that oversaw the successful legal process authorizing the dissolution of the separate nonprofit status for the Pennsylvania Bar Institute (PBI), bringing PBI back into the PBA as its education department. PBI provides continuing legal education (CLE) to lawyers and judges across the commonwealth. Schwager said Creme was willing to, on a pro bono basis, go above and beyond to tackle PBA legal matters, despite the time commitment required. For example, Schwager said Creme guided the PBA’s shift from a defined employee pension plan to a market-competitive 401(k) plan. As a long-term member and also chair of the PBA Pension Committee, Schwager said Creme saw the unsustainable climb in expenses for the PBA to remain within its former pension plan.
