“We hope many of our community members will take an hour out of the day to celebrate the true meaning of Christmas,” said lead pastor Aaron McNatt of Wrightsville Assembly of God, describing the church’s Christmas Eve services. “We’ll sing carols by candlelight, hear the story that changed the world and receive Communion together.” The church will offer two one-hour services on Sunday, Dec. 24, at 2 and 4 p.m., but they won’t be held on-site. Instead, the services will occur in the Performing Arts Center (PAC) of Eastern York High School, 720 Cool Creek Road, Wrightsville. “We held our Easter Sunday services in the Performing Arts Center and it was an incredible day,” McNatt recalled. “The PAC is a beautiful venue, and the large space made parking and flow of traffic so nice for everyone. Creative Works of Lancaster will bring its sock puppets back to the stage this December with the return of “A Christmas Carrie,” featuring an original script by playwright Erich Goldstein. Performances will take place on Friday, Dec. 15, at 6, 8, and 10 p.m. in the theater at Zoetropolis, 112 N. Water St., Lancaster. Last year’s New Year’s Day ride featured the most participants ever - upward of 500 bikes and 600 people - and raised more than $32,000. So far, the group See Riding pg 5

Bird club to host researchers, bird counts The Lancaster County Bird Club (LCBC) will meet Thursday, Dec. 14, at 7 p.m. at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster. Jeff Larkin, a biology professor at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, along with three of his graduate students, will present “Ornithology Research Update: Scarlet Tanagers and Ruffed Grouse.” Larkin and the graduate students will report on their research on the decline of ruffed grouse and scarlet tanager. The students’ research studies the causes of decline over a period of decades, methods to gather data, and possible solutions to reverse the decline of these birds in Pennsylvania. Students Jacob Goldman and Randall Koleck are studying the effects of habitat management on ruffed grouse, including using various technologies to determine the effects of various types of habitats on grouse occupancy. Student Tyler Hodges, specializing in avian ecology, is studying high-quality breeding habitat that supports scarlet tanagers and how forestry management practices affect tanagers both with positive and negative outcomes. A short business meeting will precede the program. The event is free and open to the public. The club will also sponsor four Lancaster County Christmas Bird Counts. Since 1900, the National Audubon Society has conducted a bird census called
the Christmas Bird Count, with much of the leg work done by volunteers. All levels of birders, including backyard watchers, can help with the citizen science effort. The data collected have been invaluable for studying bird population trends, migration patterns, and conservation policy. Participants will be assigned to a team with leaders who are acquainted with their areas. Backyard birders must register with the appropriate contact person prior to the event to determine if their home is within the count circle. The local events and their contact people are as follows: Sunday, Dec. 17, Solanco, Derek Stoner, 484-723-3348 or derek stoner@hotmail.com; Saturday, Dec. 23, Lancaster, Roger Stoner, 717-3939030; and Sunday, Dec. 31, Lititz, Ted Nichols, 717856-3851 or tanicholsii @gmail.com. Additionally, the Christmas Bird Count for Kids will be held at the Lancaster County Central Park on Dec. 23. It is designed to teach children about birding. Participants must register by calling the park at 717-295-2055. For more information, contact John Lahr, 717205-3030 or johnlahr324@ gmail.com. Adults without kids are welcome. For more information on any LCBC events, call 717-856-3851 or 717725-2717 or visit www .lancasterbirdclub.org or www.facebook.com /lancasterbirdclub.
A Christmas celebration from days past BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD
Every year, after festivities wind down on Christmas Day, many people experience a feeling of melancholy. Once all the wrapping paper has been ripped off the presents, it’s not uncommon for revelers to catch the
post-Christmas blues as they begin to think of the bleak winter months that must be endured before the next holiday. But most people don’t know that this is a uniquely modern problem - some centuries ago, Christmas Day marked the beginning of the fun. See Christmas pg 5

Christmas from pg 4 The traditional English Christmas was known as Yuletide, a custom involving 12 days of partying that kicked off on Dec. 25 every year. Christmas Day itself was primarily for religious observance. The holiday was followed by large gatherings of friends and family members who shared meals, played games, swapped stories and danced together. Gift giving did not have the same importance as it does in modern times, but rather it involved the exchange of small, sentimental presents on New Year’s Day. After nearly two weeks, Yuletide celebrations usually peaked on Twelfth Night with a large dinner party or a ball. Historic Rock Ford, 881 Rockford Road, Lancaster, offers members of the community a chance to see how Christmas was celebrated
in the 18th century with its annual Yuletide Tours. This year, the self-guided tours will take place on Wednesday, Dec. 27, from 4 to 6 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m.; Thursday, Dec. 28, from 4 to 6 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m.; and Friday, Dec. 29, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 4 to 6 p.m. During each tour, guests are invited to explore the halls of Rock Ford’s historic mansion, which belonged to Revolutionary War general Edward Hand. The home will be transformed into a historically accurate re-creation of how it likely appeared when Hand dwelled there. Volunteers who are dressed in period-accurate clothing will be located throughout the rooms to answer guests’ questions, and meals that were popular in Colonial times will be prepared in the kitchen. In
the hallways, performers will showcase traditional waltzes and other dances from the era. Harpsichordists Margaret Marsch and Faith Martin and violinist Mercy Martin will provide live music during each tour. Guests may visit the mansion’s study to hear a recorded monologue of Hand played by an actor. In the recording, Hand reflects on Christmas Day in 1776, when he crossed the Delaware River beside George Washington to turn the tide of the Revolutionary War. Two decades later, Hand ponders the luxuries that were made attainable by the sacrifices of others. The Yuletide Tours are historically informed by Historic Rock Ford’s curator, Sarah Alberico, who has researched old newspapers and archives to learn what was customary
in the 18th century. “The Yuletide Tours are an opportunity take a little breath after the frantic holiday,” said Sam
auxiliary will serve breakfast at the Mount Joy Legion before the ride, and a pork and sauerkraut meal will be served at the Elizabethtown Legion at the ride’s conclusion. Fun traditions at the event include Baby New Year, when a participant is chosen for the honor and must attend in a baby costume and sash. “Baby New Year will arrive at the Mount Joy Legion at noon,” Stumpf said, noting that this year’s honoree is Jeff Shultz.
At the end of the ride, an auction will be held. “We’ll have items donated by local businesses and individuals,” Stumpf said. “This year is going to be our biggest auction yet.” Proceeds from auction sales as well as the sale of T-shirts and patches will also benefit the Lebanon VA Medical Center. Stumpf noted that the event has become much more than just a fun afternoon bike ride. “It’s really become a community event over the
past 15 years,” he said. “Businesses and organizations support us, individuals participate, and people in the community come out to see all the motorcycles pass by. That’s got to be one of my favorite parts - seeing the people out along the route.” The ride is open to anyone who is interested in participating, and people may participate with any vehicle of their choice, including cars or trucks. “All of the proceeds for
