She explained that the organization’s name comes from a grim statistic: Twenty-two veterans die by suicide every day. “I want vets to know we are here to help,” said Hernandez, who has a son on active duty and a son in the Junior ROTC program. “Our goal is to keep vets alive and healthy and with their families. They gave up their mind, body and soul to give us the freedoms we have today.”
After Hernandez spoke at the check presentation, Michele Jamison sang “Proud to Be an American,” accompanied by the voices of club members throughout the room, and club manager Jerry Neff presented the check to Hernandez.
“It’s important for us as a club to give back to our local community and to help our veterans,” said Neff, a retired Air Force veteran who served in Vietnam.
Kirsch said the committee was so happy with the results of the first fundraiser, the members are already busy planning the next. “We’ve having a spaghetti dinner in February, with proceeds going to Gold Star Mothers,” she said. “We also want to do an outdoor movie night this summer. We want to do events like this because it’s important to our members. We want to do things for our vets, because without them, we’re nothing.”

Tree Society Posts
The Columbia Tree Society, the fundraising auxiliary for the Columbia Borough Shade Tree Commission, has begun its annual membership drive for 2023. Membership dues enable the Shade Tree Commission to purchase and maintain street trees in the borough.
Over the last 32 years, the Shade Tree Commission has planted approximately 940 trees in the community as well as maintaining street trees, and the organization has received the National Arbor Day Foundation’s Tree City USA designation for 31 consecutive years. The Columbia Borough Shade Tree Commission strives to encourage street tree plantings as well as tree plantings in yards, parks, and public places, as trees retain large volumes of rainfall, thereby reducing and cleansing runoff. Other potential benefits of trees include increased property values, reduced air pollu-
tion, lower noise levels and lower heating and air-conditioning costs and increased resale values.
Serving as this year’s honorary chair for the membership drive is Sandy Duncan. Sandy is the second of eight children born to Edward and Dorothea Reeves, and she grew up in the rural area of Columbia on Kinderhook Road. She was a member of the Hempfield High School Class of 1967 and was honored as the Outstanding Senior Girl Athlete at graduation. Sandy is the widow of Columbia native Charles Duncan and the mother of three Columbia High School graduates - Sonya, Charles Jr., and Randy. She has three grandchildren.
She is a Columbia community activist who strives to help make Columbia a wonderful place to live, work, and raise a family. Her past and present community activities and organizations include women’s softball teams representing Kloidt’s Flower Shoppe and Jay’s Lounge in Columbia and Zinn’s Diner in Ephrata. She was also a Penn Laurel Girl Scout Brownie leader, a Columbia Girl Scout district leader, president of the Columbia High School Band Booster
“The last time the band got first place at championships was 1998,” said Keith Gromis, director. He noted that not only has the band improved in recent years, but it has also grown from fewer than 20 members just six years ago. This year has been particularly challenging for the band, he remarked, because the group lost more than 20 seniors who graduated in the spring.
The Cavalcade of Bands is a marching band organization that provides the rules, judges and structure for marching band competitions, Gromis noted. “Bands in Cavalcade come from mainly southcentral Pa., New Jersey and even Delaware and Maryland.”
This year’s band show was titled “Unhinged,” and it featured music composed specifically for marching bands by a company called Box Six, Gromis shared. “The music was a lot of fun to play,” he said. “There
were lots of different styles, tempos and moods throughout to represent the idea of being unhinged and unexpected.”
Not only did the band place first at Cavalcade, but the Marching Knights also received awards for best visual performance, best percussion and best overall effect. “At competitions, we are judged in the area of music - how we play and sound; visual - how we move and look; color guard; percussion; and general effect, which is how well the performance portrays the theme of the show,” Gromis explained.
While the championship win was the ultimate highlight of the band’s season, it wasn’t the group’s only top score. “We participated in six regular competitions this year and had a great season,” Gromis said, “placing either first or second at all of these shows.”

Factory Whistle Concert Planned
The Factory Whistle Concert will again fill the early Christmas morning air in York at 12:15 a.m. on Sunday, Dec. 25. Whistle maestro Don Ryan and his son, Scott, will present the 25-minute concert using the variablepitched whistle now installed at 240 Arch St., York. Practice concerts are scheduled at noon on Saturdays, Dec. 17 and 24.
Ryan will celebrate his 68th anniversary performing this oneof-a-kind concert. It will also be at least 134 years that a whistle has been played in York on Christmas Eve. The whistle can easily be heard within a 5-mile radius of the concert location, and depending upon the wind, the whistle has been reported from as far away as 10 miles.
For the eighth year in the concert’s history, people from around the world will be able to view the concert by visiting www.yorkpafactorywhistle.com or searching for “Factory Whistle” on Facebook. The Factory Whistle Master app is also available for downloading. Streaming will begin at midnight.
The concert has numerous sponsors and is supported through donations from community businesses and residents.

Wreath-Laying Ceremony Planned
A Wreaths Across America ceremony will be held at Mount Bethel Cemetery, 700 Locust St., Columbia, on National Wreaths Across America Day, Saturday, Dec. 17, at noon. Mount Bethel Cemetery is the final resting place of more than 680 veterans who served in conflicts ranging from the Revolutionary War to the Vietnam War.
Mayor Leo Lutz will lead the ceremony, and Raymond Wallace, a World War II veteran who served in the 82nd Airborne, will represent POWs. The ceremony will conclude with the playing of taps and the laying of
wreaths. Every branch of the military will be recognized.
The mission of Wreaths Across America is to remember and honor veterans and teach others about them.
Last year, ceremonies were held across the country at more than 3,100 locations, where a total of 2.4 million wreaths were placed for interred veterans.
For more information, contact Wreaths Across America location coordinator Jane Moore at 717-575-9760 or jmoore1115@gmail.com. To donate or to sign up to volunteer, visit www .WreathsAcrossAmerica.org /PAMBCC.
