Haunted Lantern Tour To Return With “Mortality Within in By Chelsea Peifer
Sara Mimnall and Rebecca Wright chose the theme of “Mortality Within for Columbia’s Haunted Lantern Tour this year because they wanted to introduce people to a not-often-talked-about aspect of the rivertown’s history. The theme will focus on the disease and poverty that struck Columbia and other communities in earlier days, discussing the presence of pesthouses and sanitariums and how much things have changed. “It shows how people suffered more than they had to because they didn’t have the
like we do now, noted Mimnall. “It will also touch on the Great Depression and how the lack of food (and resources) can change people, Wright added. Popular characters from past years will also reappear, Wright said, such as William Campbell, a local trapper who died from rabies and is buried in Columbia’s historic Mount Bethel Cemetery. History abounds in the cemetery and the town, and according to Mimnall and Wright, while spooky elements are intertwined on the tour, history is indeed the emphasis. The hourlong guided tours will take place on Friday and Saturday
John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, 23 S. Sixth St., Columbia. Tours will step off every half hour beginning at 6:30 p.m., with the last tour starting at 9:30 p.m. Participants will follow guides to Locust Street and through a loop in the Mount Bethel Cemetery before returning to the church. To purchase tickets, interested individuals may call 717-517-2442. A specific tour time will be designated when tickets are reserved. Organizers strongly encourage people to order tickets in advance. A limited number of tickets may be available on the night of the tours but are not

Holiday Tree Tips Natural Christmas tree aficionados love the authenticity such trees provide during the holiday season. Natural trees also provide a unique aroma that can make holiday celebrations feel more homey. A few simple strategies can help holiday revelers ensure their Christmas trees make it through the holiday season unscathed. When purchasing natural trees, holiday celebrants, especially those who like to buy their trees in early December, may be concerned about keeping their trees fresh throughout the holiday season. Several tips can help trees last until the final present is unwrapped and the last of the egg nog has been consumed. The first tip is to buy a freshly cut tree. Whenever possible, people should cut their own trees. This ensures that the tree they bring home is fresh, increasing the chances it will remain so throughout the season. If it is not possible to cut one’s own tree, the National Fire Protection Association notes that fresh trees should have green needles that do not come off when touched. Trees that appear to be dried out or those that shed needles when touched should be avoided. The Tree Care Industry Association advises consumers to protect their Christmas trees as they transport them home. The tree should be wrapped in a plas-
tic wrap so it makes it home damage-free. A damaged tree might not make it through the holiday season. Pre-cut trees should be cut again before leaving the lot. Precut trees can make it through the holiday season looking their best, but buyers should request that employees cut as much as two inches off the bottom of the tree before leaving the lot. Once trees are cut, sap begins to seal their base, making it hard for them to absorb water. By requesting that between one and two inches be removed from the bottom of the tree at the time of purchase, buyers are ensuring their trees will be able to absorb the water they will need to make it through the season when they get home. To prevent the base of the tree from drying out, the tree should be placed in water the moment it gets home. Freshly cut trees may initially need the water in their tree stands filled in the morning and then again in the evening. As the season progresses trees likely will not need their stands filled more than once per day. The tree should be placed away from heat sources. Placing trees away from heat sources, such as radiators, fireplaces, heating vents, and lights, reduces the likelihood that trees will dry out and also reduces the risk of fire.

miner’s lamps from the grotto flame. The lamps are then carried by jet from Tel Aviv, Israel, to Vienna, Austria. There the Peace Light is distributed at a service of dedication to delegations from across Europe, and these delegations take the light back to their own countries, along with a message of peace. Since 2004, the miner’s lamps containing the Peace Light have been flown from Vienna to New York City. Boy Scout leaders from the U.S. light their lanterns from the miner’s lamps in New York and spread out across the U.S. and Canada to share the Peace Light. This is the first year that the Pennsylvania Dutch Council will host the Peace Light. The Peace Light is a physical reminder of the reason for the Christmas season. The Pennsylvania Dutch Council serves nearly 5,500 youths in a variety of programs in Lancaster and Lebanon counties. president of student affairs, he launched MICA’s first residence life program and established a student affairs division for the college, which included on-site counseling and health care services, as well as diversity and safety initiatives. As vice president of operations, Molla was responsible for the development of the Campus Master Plan, including the design and construction of resident facilities; numerous academic, studio and shop spaces; a center for graduate education; and, most recently, an undergraduate design center. In the vice president of strategic initiatives position, Molla was responsible for strengthening the relationship between MICA and the city of Baltimore, including facilitating new urban initiatives to engage the community in support of the arts and expanding opportunities to city residents. In Lancaster, Molla seeks to explore the possibilities of the college’s contributions to the city of Lancaster and vice versa. PCA&D to the Lancaster community and arts community and told the story of the importance of arts in the community. Special speakers were Deana Haggag, president and CEO of United States Artists; Fred Lazarus IV, president emeritus of Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA); and the Hon. Danene Sorace, mayor of Lancaster city. The event also included a video message from Samuel “Sammy” Hoi, president of Maryland Institute College of Art. Afterward, the PCA&D family and members of the Lancaster community gathered at PCA&D for a celebration that included food from the many traditions represented in Lancaster, along with music. All elements of the celebration related specifically to Lancaster. Molla said that his alma mater, Anna Maria College in Paxton, Mass., was like PCA&D in being a small, focused, personal college that emphasizes individual student’s needs, active learning and mentorship. Molla served at MICA for a total of 26 years and led the college in the areas of student affairs, operations and strategic initiatives. As the associate vice

Michael R. Molla was installed as the third president of Pennsylvania College of Art & Design (PCA&D) in a special ceremony on Oct. 30 at the Ware Center as part of a day of celebration for PCA&D’s engagement in Lancaster city. In the morning, all PCA&D students, plus faculty, staff members and trustees, took part in PCA&D & Lancaster: Creative Community Engagement. The participants worked on 17 engagement projects using art and design in problem solving to assist area community organizations. The event was bookended by a kickoff breakfast, featuring community engagement tips from Michael Bunting of Lancaster’s The Stone School, and a celebratory lunch. The presidential installation ceremony in the afternoon began with a parade of regalia-robed faculty, staff members, students and trustees making their way from PCA&D to the Ware Center. The ceremony focused on PCA&D’s history and future, and it featured Molla’s chosen theme of “&,” the ampersand, a symbol of forging, building and deepening connections. The program reintroduced

Customer Care Center Updated The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has modernized its online Customer Care Center - www.customer care.penndot.gov - to make it easier to report concerns on statemaintained roadways with new mapping capabilities, optional photo uploads, and a mobilefriendly interface. The purpose of the new Customer Care Center is to make it easier for members of the public to share their concerns or feedback.
The modernized service sorts concerns into categories: road or bridge conditions; removing something from a roadway; traffic, signs, or signals; ongoing roadwork or projects; or general questions and concerns. Users can map their current location to document a concern or choose an address or roadway, as well as other relevant location information, and even upload photos related to the concern. These descriptions will provide better
information for PennDOT staff and can reduce the amount of time needed to gather more information from customers submitting concerns. As of Sept. 30, the previous Customer Care Center had nearly 45,000 concerns submitted this year. More than 96 percent of those concerns have been resolved. Motorists are asked to be as specific as possible when providing locations of concerns. Motorists should report the county,
municipality, street name, and state route number, which can be found on small black and white signs posted along state highways. In addition, a description of any familiar landmarks would be helpful for PennDOT to locate the problem area. Maintenance concerns will be corrected as soon as possible. Emergency road repairs, such as road wash-outs, are handled on a top-priority basis. Concerns may also be reported
through 800-FIX-ROAD (800-3497623), though the number should not be used to report traffic accidents, disabled vehicles, or other emergencies. Motorists should continue to call 911 to report these types of emergencies. Customers with questions or concerns related to driver or vehicle services should visit www.dmv.pa.gov. For concerns related to the Pennsylvania Turnpike, readers should visit www.paturnpike.com.

Gifts Sought To Fight Pediatric Cancer Ryan’s Birthday Party Foundation, a nonprofit organization with the mission to “Help Kids With Cancer Smile,” is currently raising funds for a pediatric brain cancer research grant. The foundation is partnering with Live Like Lukas to provide a matching grant to Nemours AI duPont Children’s Hospital. The foundation is aiming to provide $25,000, with Live Like Lukas donating $50,000; this $75,000 will be matched at Nemours for a total of $150,000. A total of $16,000 toward the foundation’s $25,000 donation was raised at its Denim and Diamonds event on Sept. 30. The community is invited to donate to
fund the remaining $9,000. Community members may help decorate the foundation’s virtual Giving Tree by making a donation at www.ryansbirthday party.com/donate or by giving to Ryan’s Birthday Party Foundation Inc. via PayPal. Individuals may donate in honor of or in memory of a family member or other loved one. For every donation of at least $25, the foundation will add a new decoration to its online Christmas tree. The Christmas tree will remain on the website all year. For more information on Ryan’s Birthday Party Foundation, readers may visit www.ryansbirthdayparty.com.
