“What I love about ‘Bye Bye Birdie’ is that you can come to this show and just enjoy,” said Heather Grayberg, who will both direct and choreograph the Lancaster Bible College (LBC) winter presentation. “(‘Birdie’ is) super fun, kitschy, loud, bright, and silly in a lot of ways.” “Bye Bye Birdie,” is a Tony Award-winning musical that first played on Broadway in 1960. LBC will stage the show in the Good Shepherd Chapel, 901 Eden Road, Lancaster, on Fridays, Jan. 18 and 25, at 7 p.m.; Saturdays, Jan. 19 and 26, at 2 and 7 p.m.; and Sunday, Jan. 20, at 2 p.m. See “Bye Bye Birdie” pg 4

Volleyball Tournament from pg 1
COLUMBIA / HELLAM / WRIGHTSVILLE
By Ann Mead Ash
John Denlinger, advancement associate with Lancaster Mennonite School (LMS), feels that the annual volleyball tournament that benefits the Glen D. Lapp Endowment for Student Aid is unique. “We organize the tournament ‘Glen-style,’” said Denlinger. “(Glen Lapp) was so laidback and relaxed.” “Glen-style” means there are no officials. “Everybody calls their own game,” explained Denlinger. “If they touch the net, they make their own call. If it’s out, you make your call. That’s how Glen would have wanted it.” Denlinger added that the Glenstyle play is explained to the teams prior to each tournament. This year’s fundraiser will be held on Saturdays, Jan. 5 and 12, 2019, at Lancaster Mennonite High School (LMHS), 2176 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster. The tournament will be divided into two divisions. Division B will play beginning at 9 a.m. on Jan. 5, and Division A will play beginning at noon on Jan. 12. A maximum of 20 teams will play

next. He worked as the dorm supervisor at LMHS and coached volleyball. Eventually, he decided to become a nurse, completing a Johns Hopkins accelerated course to become a registered nurse in one year. During his adult life, Glen lived in six states, serving people from all walks of life as a registered nurse working at Lancaster Regional Hospital and with the Traveling Nurses Association, which took him to New York City and Oregon. He also worked in a government clinic on a Native American reserve in Supai, Ariz. In December of 2011, LMS began the endowment, which - in honor of Glen’s work overseas is used to provide scholarships for immigrant and refugee students. The fund supports needbased scholarships that enable students to receive an education at LMS. Since it began, the volleyball tournament has raised $50,000 for the fund. Denlinger noted that the tournament, which started with family and friends of Glen, has grown over the years and that last year, a few teams had to be
turned away. This year, MCC, which still has a presence in Afghanistan, will have a display at both events that will include photos of Glen and testimonials. Representatives will be with the display to answer questions. Readers who wish to learn more about the tournament may visit http://glenlappvolley ball.weebly.com. Players and teams that wish to register may do so by searching for “Glen Lapp Memorial Volleyball” at www.active.com. Registrations will be accepted through Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2019. Pictured on front: Glen Lapp (far right) was serving in Afghanistan with Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) in partnership with International Assistance Mission when he and nine others were killed on Aug. 5, 2010. in each division. The tournament is organized by Mark Leaman and Kevin Groff, with help from Glen’s cousin Joel Lapp. Leaman and Groff played volleyball for Lancaster Mennonite High School (LMHS) and were coached by Glen in 1992 and 1993. The initial tournament held in Glen’s honor was organized by his cousin Tim Lapp. Glen was killed on Aug. 5, 2010, when he and nine others were ambushed after holding an eye and dental clinic in a remote area of Afghanistan. Glen, a nurse, traveled to Afghanistan in October 2008 through Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) in partnership with International Assistance Mission. Eye care is a pressing need in Afghanistan. To reach the village where the clinic was held, members of the group first flew, then drove, and then walked, packing their equipment on hired horses. Before becoming a nurse, Glen attended Eastern Mennonite University (EMU), where he played volleyball and earned a degree in math. Following graduation from EMU, Glen was not quite sure what he wanted to do

ages 15 to 19 from across the country, as well as 10th in beef cattle and 11th in reasons. Members of the award-winning 2018 4-H Senior Livestock Judging Team included Emma Musser, Maddie Musser, Jacob Snavely, and Leah Welk. Individually, Leah earned 15th overall for her scores at the national competition. Leah, the daughter of Don and Emily Welk of Strasburg, is a senior at Lampeter-Strasburg High School. She has been involved in 4-H for eight years and is also a member of FFA. After graduation, Leah plans to attend Penn State University to major in agricultural science and minor in animal science or agricultural communications. Plus, she plans to get involved in livestock judging at the collegiate level. “I learned I can compete at a higher level just like anyone else can,” said Leah. “It was one of the best experiences I’ve ever had.” Earlier in the year, Leah set the goal of becoming an All-
American, and achieving that was the highlight of her year. Prior to the national competition, the team won the state championship at the Penn State 4-H Achievement Days held at University Park from July 23 to 25. The team placed second at the Keystone International Livestock Exposition on Oct. 5. Individually, Maddie earned fourth, Emma took eighth, and Leah came in 13th. At the Southeast Regional Contest in Raleigh, N.C., on Oct. 27, the team came in fourth place, with Maddie taking sixth and Leah placing ninth. Coached by Adam and Dani Zurin of Mount Joy and Johanna Rohrer of Manheim, the team began holding practices in January 2018 at the Farm and Home Center. Beginning in March, practices went from going over basic information in a classroom setting to visiting local farms for handson experience judging real animals. Each student was required to raise funds for the
costs involved with traveling to and from competitions and did so by sending letters to family and friends as well as selling baskets at the Elizabethtown Fair and Manheim Farm Show. “We bonded really well as a team, and it was a lot of fun being together,” remarked Emma when reflecting on the group’s success. Emma, the daughter of Greg and Jodi Musser of Elizabethtown, has been a 4-H member for eight years. She is a junior at Elizabethtown Area High School, where she is president of FFA and plays tennis. “It was cool getting to see livestock from different states and getting to meet people from different states,” said Emma, “and representing Lancaster County and getting to do it all with my sister.” Emma’s sister Maddie has been a 4-H member for nine years and is currently a freshman at Penn State University, where she is studying agricultural business management. Maddie attributed the team’s outstanding year to the coaches, who volunteered countless hours
instructing and practicing with the students. They also planned stops at nine farms along the way to the national competition in Louisville for the team to practice judging animals. Jacob Snavely, the son of Jason and Erica Snavely of Manheim, has been a 4-H member for six years. He is a sophomore at Manheim Central High School, where he is actively involved in FFA and started a student livestock judging club. Jacob decided to try out for the Senior Livestock Judging Team after hearing about it at the annual Lancaster County 4-H reorganizational meeting, where volunteers share about the various opportunities for the coming year. The 2019 4-H Livestock Clubs reorganizational meeting is set to take place at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 22, at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster. Students interested in learning more are welcome to attend or to visit https:// extension.psu.edu/programs/ 4-h/counties/lancaster for more information.

trying to get in the reality of it,” she added, stating that there is a challenge in humanizing the characters to encourage audience members to relate to them rather than making them over-the-top caricatures. “We want to personify the Elvis (character) as much as possible,” Grayberg said. Focusing on the tension between Rosie and Albert’s mother, Mae, played by Rachel Allen, Grayberg also hopes to showcase the role of the young Hispanic woman. “Rosie is extremely Americanized and a strong character. She is very much the progressive woman of that time period. It will be interesting to play (up) the relationship between her and (Albert’s) mother,” she said. While Grayberg’s directing vision calls for making the roles more realistic, her plans for the choreography of the show are to
make it larger-than-life. Grayberg is also working to emphasize the musical selections. “It will be overdanced,” said Grayberg. “It’s going to be big.” According to Grayberg, the production will challenge student actors in a variety of ways. “The song ‘Put on a Happy Face’ will be explosive with dance,” said the director, who hopes to add some juggling into the number. “Honestly Sincere” will be another standout. “You can’t help but dance and move and groove to it,” said Grayberg, who added that songs from the 1995 film will be included. “They give the character of Rosie a little more dimension,” she said, adding that she hopes audience members will find themselves humming the tunes on the way out. To keep the show moving continuously, the set will be a house that separates and turns around to create different geometric
shapes. “It will complement the talent and let the talent be in the forefront,” said Grayberg. The set will allow for scene changes to remain fluid. “I hope to have no blackouts at all,” said Grayberg, who plans to choreograph set changes. “It will feel like a consistent piece of art.” Grayberg praised the cast members, most of whom are part of the school’s musical theater program. “Our students are now working professionally out in the community, and the caliber of our shows will get better because of that,” said Grayberg. “They are becoming true career professionals.” Tickets to the show may be purchased at www.lbc.edu/events. Tickets may also be purchased at the LBC box office in the Good Shepherd Chapel on weekdays between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Readers who have questions may call 717-560-8241.

“Birdie,” which has more than 30 members in the cast, is the story of Conrad Birdie, a singer and teenage heartthrob, played by Brayden Krikke, who is drafted into the Army. His agent, Albert Peterson, played by Richard Thomas, and Peterson’s secretary and love interest, Rosie Alvarez, played by Rachel Wiles, concoct a scheme to turn the situation into a publicity coup by planning to have Birdie sing one final song to a female member of his fan club, accompanied by a “last kiss.” The song and subsequent pucker are to take place on “The Ed Sullivan Show.” Enter teenager Kim MacAfee, played by Brianna Brady, who wins the competition. “Birdie,” which is based loosely on Elvis Presley’s induction into the Army, is set in the late 1950s. “It’s between poodle skirts and the hippie movement,” said Grayberg. “We’re

Each of the 582 stores will support 16 children from its local community by partnering with The Salvation Army to receive wish lists from local families. Employees will volunteer their time to shop for items, wrap items and host holiday parties for the children and their families. At the parties, Santa will greet the children and
present them with new toys, along with clothes and other items meeting basic needs. The children and their families will enjoy food, crafts, games and opportunities to take pictures with Santa. In addition to donating during checkout, readers may support the program by purchasing specially marked items at Sheetz, with a portion of proceeds supporting the holiday donation drive; shopping on AmazonSmile at https://smile.amazon.com and selecting Sheetz For the Kidz as the charity they would like to support; donating at www.sheetz forthekidz.org; or purchasing Sheetz Art Project swag at www.sheetzshop.com.

The proceeds from the ticket sale minus the costs of the car were split between the Clare House and CMAF. The car was awarded to Chris and Donna Giles of Conisteo, N.Y., during the annual Corvettes at Carlisle event in late August. LCCC governor Clyde Mooney presented checks to Eva Dombrowski, Clare House executive director; Valerie Kissinger of Clare House board of directors; and Judy Miller, Chip Miller’s widow and assistant treasurer of the CMAF. The club has organized numerous car giveaway drawings in the past, but after a gap it
restarted its efforts last year. In 2016 and 2017, the club distributed more than $51,000 each year to the same two charities. Along with the giveaway drawing for the car, the club also has other shows and events through the year. These activities also raise additional funds for Clare House, the club’s dedicated primary beneficiary. For more information, readers may contact Mooney at 717-898-2766 or govenor@lcccpa.com. The Library System of Lancaster County has expanded its Bookmobile service.
The Library System of Lancaster County has announced the expansion of its Bookmobile service. During the past year, the Bookmobile significantly increased its service by adding an additional eight Head Start stops and four stops to other communities: Country Meadows Assisted Living Facility, Woodcrest Villa Retirement Village, Manor Heights (Mountville), and Pleasant Valley Amish Store (Kirkwood). Last year, the Bookmobile had 51 stops on its monthly schedule. Since the arrival of the new Bookmobile in the spring, the schedule now includes 63 stops to Head Start locations, preschools and senior communities. That is a 23.5 percent increase over 2017, and the library system continues to receive requests for service from Lancaster County communities. The library systems credits the expansion of the Bookmobile service not only to the new Bookmobile, but also to a new partnership between the library system and The Shalom Project. The partnership resulted in the placement of Kaitlin Abrahams as a new intern for the Bookmobile. Abrahams grew up in Kansas and recently
graduated from EMU with a degree in English and writing studies. The Shalom Project is a oneyear voluntary service experience for recent college graduates. Participants live together in a house in Lancaster city; serve the community through full-time, professional internships; and participate in seminars focused on Christian spiritual formation and personal growth. The program covers all of the participants’ living expenses, including housing, transportation, and food. For more information about The Shalom Project, readers may visit http://shalomlancaster.org.

Haunted Lantern Tour To Return With “Mortality Within” in” By Chelsea Peifer
Sara Mimnall and Rebecca Wright chose the theme of “Mortality Within” for Columbia’s Haunted Lantern Tour this year because they wanted to introduce people to a not-often-talked-about aspect of the rivertown’s history. The theme will focus on the disease and poverty that struck Columbia and other communities in earlier days, discussing the presence of pesthouses and sanitariums and how much things have changed. “It shows how people suffered more than they had to because they didn’t have the
like we do now,” noted Mimnall. “It will also touch on the Great Depression and how the lack of food (and resources) can change people,” Wright added. Popular characters from past years will also reappear, Wright said, such as William Campbell, a local trapper who died from rabies and is buried in Columbia’s historic Mount Bethel Cemetery. History abounds in the cemetery and the town, and according to Mimnall and Wright, while spooky elements are intertwined on the tour, history is indeed the emphasis. The hourlong guided tours will take place on Friday and Saturday
John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, 23 S. Sixth St., Columbia. Tours will step off every half hour beginning at 6:30 p.m., with the last tour starting at 9:30 p.m. Participants will follow guides to Locust Street and through a loop in the Mount Bethel Cemetery before returning to the church. To purchase tickets, interested individuals may call 717-517-2442. A specific tour time will be designated when tickets are reserved. Organizers strongly encourage people to order tickets in advance. A limited number of tickets may be available on the night of the tours but are not

Show To Feature “Book Of Matthew Project” The Community Room on King, 106 W. King St., Lancaster, will host a show titled “The Book of Matthew Project” by artist Daehong Kim for First Friday, Jan. 4, from 6 to 9 p.m. “The Book of Matthew Project” was conceived in June 2010 as a personal pledge to support a church ministry that was sending a group of young adults on a short-term service mission to South Korea. Kim committed to handwriting each verse from the Gospel of Matthew on individual cards, accounting for 1,071 verses. Kim also invited people to participate by contributing verses, and these verses and others were collected and applied on five canvases. The purpose of writing each verse was to

especially if long-distance travel is planned. PennDOT urges motorists to carry an emergency kit. An emergency kit should include items such as nonperishable food, water, first aid supplies, warm clothes, a blanket, a cellphone charger and a small snow shovel. However, motorists should tailor their kits to any specific needs that they or their families may have. Drivers should consider adding such items as baby supplies, extra medication, pet supplies, or even children’s games. Motorists can check conditions on more than 40,000 roadway miles, including color-coded winter conditions on 2,900 miles, by visiting www.511PA.com. 511PA, which is free and available 24 hours a day, provides traffic delay warnings, weather forecasts, traffic speed information, and access to more than 860 traffic cameras. 511PA is also available through a smartphone application for iPhone and Android devices, by calling 5-1-1, or by following regional Twitter alerts accessible on the 511PA website. for those conditions. If motorists encounter snow or ice-covered roads, they should slow down, increase their following distance and avoid distractions. Last winter in Pennsylvania, preliminary data shows that there were 440 crashes resulting in one fatality and 221 injuries on snowy, slushy, or ice-covered roadways where aggressive-driving behaviors such as speeding or making careless lane changes were factors. In addition to planning for winter travel conditions, motorists should prepare their vehicles for the season. Tires should be checked often for the correct level of air pressure and adequate tire tread depth to perform on ice and snow. A quick way to check tread depth is to insert a penny in the tread groove with Lincoln’s head upside down. If the entire head can be seen, the tires are worn and traction will suffer. If the driver lives in an area prone to heavy snow, he or she may want to consider using dedicated snow tires or carrying a set of tire chains. At a minimum, all-season tires should be rated for use in mud and snow. Once vehicles are travel-ready, drivers should be prepared for winter or vehicle emergencies,

Kim is an American artist who was born in South Korea in the late 1970s. He took up studio art and music performance as a child. At age 7, he became fascinated with basic generative design in a computer programming class. He is an advocate of art as an agent for telling stories and as a medium of renewal. He considers art integral to the narrative of his personal pilgrimage in human portrait and faith. Attendees of the First Friday event will be able to meet the artist, read some of the handwritten verses, and enjoy snacks.

into 96,000 snow-lane miles enough miles to circle the globe nearly four times. A snow lane is calculated as the miles of road multiplied by the number of lanes, which means a 1-mile section of four-lane roadway would equal 4 snow-lane miles. The department maintains roughly the same number of miles maintained by the state in New York, New Jersey, and all the New England states combined. With $228 million budgeted for this winter’s statewide operations, PennDOT deploys about 4,500 on-the-road workers, has more than 620,000 tons of salt on hand across the state, and will take salt deliveries throughout the winter. Winter maintenance is a critical and difficult task, and drivers should always think safety first and be sure that they are giving plenty of room to PennDOT operators and other motorists. When winter weather hits, PennDOT’s primary focus is on interstates and expressways, and equipment may be redirected to those routes during significant winter events. The more traffic a roadway has, the more attention it will receive from plows, so motorists may find deeper accumulations on less-traveled routes and should adjust their driving
Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has shared the agency’s plans for winter services and highlighted tools members of the public can use through the winter and how they can prepare for the coming season. PennDOT’s top priority is safety, and that guides winter preparations and operations. To help the public prepare for the season and share information about winter services, resources are available at www.penndot.gov/winter. The site also has a complete winter guide with detailed information about winter services in each of PennDOT’s 11 engineering districts. The public can also access travel information on nearly 40,000 roadway miles year-round at www.511PA.com, and during the winter, they can find plow truck locations and details of when state-maintained roadways were last plowed. The information is made possible by PennDOT’s Automated Vehicle Location (AVL) technology, which uses units in each of the more than 2,200 department-owned and rented plow trucks to send a cellular signal showing where a truck is located. The 40,000 miles for which PennDOT is responsible translates
