Compeer Chester County Names New Program Director By Francine Fulton
While people in recovery from a mental illness are treated by professionals and various therapies, they may lack the support of personal friends. Helping to fill that gap is Compeer
Chester County, a nonprofit organization that pairs people living with mental health conditions with volunteer friends from the community. “We want to add friendship therapy to a person’s life,” said Donna Kueny, who was named the new Compeer Chester County program director on Dec. 17. “Both people benefit from that. The volunteers truly make a difference in someone’s life, and for the person in recovery their See Compeer pg 5

Most people are familiar with an Advent calendar, which is used to count down the days to Christmas. As part of the tradition on each day of December until Christmas, a door or window is opened on a paper calendar to reveal a prize, a Bible verse or a piece of chocolate, among other items. At Hopewell United Methodist Church (UMC) in Downingtown, the congregation recently took part in a Reverse Advent Calendar (RAC) program by collecting nonperishable food items during the four weeks preceding Christmas. The donations were collected to benefit the Lord’s Pantry of See Food Donations pg 7

as a collaborative effort between CVC and Detective Dave Maurer of the West Goshen Police Department. The idea originally stemmed from a client need for essential winter clothing; it then developed into raising necessary funds. Each year the Mrs. Claus Fund raises money and secures gift cards for clients who need a little extra help, especially around the holidays. The fund assists with essentials like filling up the car with gas, buying snow boots and coats, or making sure that children have a gift to open on Christmas Day. Maurer, a longtime supporter of CVC, spearheads the Mrs. Claus effort each year and joined the agency’s board of directors in November. The largest donations of gift cards and cash came in through coordinated efforts from the Doris Jonas Freed American Inn of Court, coordinated by Samantha Cole, Esquire; Automated Financial Services Inc., coordinated by Erica Bruckus; Christ Community Church; West Goshen Police Department; and Kimberly Metcalf. A Taste of Phoenixville, a fundraiser to support Good Samaritan Services (GSS), will be held at a new venue this year - the Franklin Commons, 400 Franklin Ave., Phoenixville. The 17th annual event, which will feature food and beverages, as well as a silent auction, live music and dancing, will take place on Thursday, Jan. 17, from 6 to 10 p.m. People also have an opportunity to purchase tickets for a VIP reception to be held from 5 to 6 p.m. Those who attend the event will be treated to hors d’oeuvres and samples of main dishes and desserts prepared by chefs from local fine restaurants and caterers. Among the menu items will be Irish-American cuisine, seafood, pasta and an assortment of sandwiches. Desserts will include gourmet baked goods and chocolate and specialty coffees. As part of the evening, representatives from each establishment will set up a table, and participants will be invited to move from station to station to sample the food. “We will have at least 20 restaurants,” noted Christine Stoltzfus, GSS events manager. She noted that the restaurants are currently being featured at www.facebook.com/Tasteof Phoenixville. The event will also feature musical entertainment by Hytha Family Band, featuring Greg and Linda Hytha, who have performed at the event each year since its
inception. A dance floor will be available. The evening will also include a silent auction offering items donated by local businesses such as artwork, jewelry and sports memorabilia. “We will also have gift cards for restaurants and outings to local museums,” noted Stoltzfus. An online mobile bidding system will be utilized this year for the fifth time. As part of the process, ticketholders can use their smartphones to bid on silent auction items while they are at the event or beforehand. The event is the organization’s major fundraiser, bringing in about $60,000 each year through ticket sales, the silent auction and sponsorships. More than 500 people attended the 2018 event. The Good Samaritan Shelter, a private, nonprofit, nondenominational Christian organization, was started by several Phoenixvillearea churches and other community supporters in 1999. The shelter’s name comes from the biblical parable of the Good Samaritan, which teaches people to love others by taking care of their physical and emotional needs. The shelter now includes eight properties, six in Phoenixville for men and two in Ephrata for women and children. The shelters offer a safe place to sleep, meals, counseling, training and job placement assistance. In 2017, the organization merged with Bridge of Hope Lancaster and Chester Counties. The merger created a new organization, Good Samaritan Services. According to GSS chief executive officer Nate Hoffer, funds generated at A

Taste of Phoenixville will support all of the organization’s services and programs. In his year-end report, Hoffer announced GSS’ accomplishments in 2018. He noted that 342 individuals and families received emergency shelter, transitional living and permanent housing during the year, noting that about half of the number represents children. Additionally, 70 percent of program participants found employment. GSS also helped its clients increase their financial stability by providing more than $11,000 through the Matched Savings and Microloan programs. Finally, GSS provided more than $90,000 in rental assistance to single mothers across Lancaster and Chester counties. Compeer from pg 1 self-esteem level goes up and they have an honest-to-goodness friend.” Compeer Chester County is a program of Mental Health Partnerships (MHP), supported by the Chester County Department of Mental Health/Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities and private donations. Kueny explained that she actually is not new to leading the Compeer Chester County program. “Four years ago, I started in this role (as program manager),” she explained. “After about six months, I was promoted to a regional director for
MHP in Delaware County to manage programs there. So, this is like coming home.” According to Kueny, Compeer volunteers are paired with individuals of the same gender and geographical area who share common interests. Volunteers are asked to meet with their friends for four hours minimum each month for one year. The pairs can share activities such as meeting for lunch or going to a sporting event. Kueny noted that she was a volunteer Compeer friend herself. “We mostly went out to lunch and (shopping), and we did
a lot of phone support,” she said. “ We also attended Compeersponsored events, including the Friendship Luncheon and the picnic in the summertime.” She explained that her primary role as the new program director is to facilitate the matches. She is also working on a new program called CompeerCORPS Vet2Vet, which will match veteran volunteers with veterans in recovery from mental illness. “We live in a society where most people want to volunteer and do something to make a difference,” Kueny stated. “Compeer
is so wonderful because the one thing that people in mental health recovery never have (enough of is) friends. There is a lot of social isolation with mental health.” Individuals in the program have been diagnosed with conditions such as depression, social anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder, and they are referred to the program by a mental health professional. “The people we accept into the program are working in conjunction with their therapist or case manager,” noted Kueny. “They have been stable in the community for
a while and they have the support of the entire team throughout the whole process.” Volunteers, who undergo an interview, a background check and a training session, are of various ages and come from different backgrounds. “ We are actually getting a lot of younger people, which is helpful,” Kueny said, noting that Compeer Chester County has held recruiting events at West Chester and Widener universities, among others. As of Nov. 30, 2018, Kueny reported that there are 52 Com-
peer matches in Chester County. This includes 41 one-to-one matches; seven calling matches, where pairs talk on the phone; three e-buddies, where the friends communicate via email; and one group match for veterans led by Rob Chisholm, Compeer Chester County’s founder, who still volunteers with the program. To learn more about Compeer Chester County, readers may contact Kueny at 610-436-4445 or dkueny@mhphope.org. David’s Drive 831 (DD831), a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the lives of veterans, held its ninth annual Christmas Gift Wrapping Extravaganza on Dec. 14 at the Coatesville Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center. During the event, approximately 200 volunteers wrapped 1,000 gift boxes containing personal care items, snacks and more. The Christmas gifts were distributed to veterans who reside at the Coatesville VA Medical Center, as well as to veterans at other facilities. DD831 is named after David Turner Jr., who died at the age of 20 on Dec. 16, 2009. At the time of his death, David was employed at the VA center, and afterward, his family members started the David’s Drive charity to benefit veterans by providing much-needed goods and services. The 831 symbolizes the phrase “I love you,” because it contains eight letters and three words that have one meaning. During the event, in an assembly line fashion, volunteers packed the boxes with the individual items that were purchased in advance with donated funds. Each box contained deodorant, lotion, toothpaste and a toothbrush, a pen and pencil, chocolates, mints, socks, a hat, a scarf, gloves and a puzzle book, among other items.

“We hired the Jess Zimmerman Band (to perform) a country music concert during Veterans Week at the VA,” Turner explained. “Right in the middle (of the gift-wrapping event), Jess Zimmerman stopped volunteers in their tracks with a beautiful rendition of our national anthem.” Jenn Lilly, chief of voluntary service at the Coatesville VA, was also on hand at the event. “She had the idea to place all the (wrapped and decorated) boxes in the shape of 831,” Turner noted. “It worked out really well.” The Christmas boxes were distributed to veterans at the Coatesville and Lebanon VA medical centers, the Southeastern Pennsylvania Veterans Center in Spring City and the Delaware County Community Based Outpatient Clinic (CBOC) in Broomall. Turner noted that fundrais-

“Each box also (contained) a holiday card, including homemade ones,” explained David Turner Sr., founder and president of David’s Drive 831. “There were 25 items total in each box.” Boxes were then wrapped in white paper. The wrapped boxes were given to volunteers who decorated them with various designs. “Anybody that wanted to color the boxes was (invited),” said Turner. “There were Girl Scout troops there and church groups and (representatives) from some of the veterans’ service organizations.” Turner noted that many of veterans who receive the boxes carefully remove the wrapping paper and hang it on their walls as a decoration. Special guests at the wrapping event included state Sen. Andy Dinniman, who presented the volunteers with citations, and singer Jess Zimmerman.

ing efforts are held year-round to purchase gifts and wrapping materials for the project, which costs approximately $25,000. “We got grants from the Pennsylvania Veterans Foundation and a grant from the Veterans Trust Fund,” he pointed out. “There are also companies in the area that always help us out. A local company donated 25 pizzas for the volunteers.” The Christmas Gift Wrapping Extravaganza is one of DD831’s many efforts that benefit veterans. The charity collects socks and underwear throughout the year and also offers assistance to previously homeless veterans by helping them with transitional housing and by purchasing new beds and household items for them. Turner said that the various projects not only provide comfort to his family but also honor David Turner Jr. In a post at www.facebook.com/davids.drive, Turner wrote, “Thanks to the love from the community we get to honor him - to ensure he is not forgotten. We feel close to David as it keeps his memory alive.” For more information about David’s Drive, readers may visit the Facebook page or www.davidsdrive831.org. Food Donations from pg 1 Downingtown. “Instead of opening the day’s Advent calendar door to receive a surprise or treat, we (asked the congregation) to give a gift by putting aside a packaged food item as a donation each day of Advent,” explained Deb Boyd, Hopewell UMC’s director of lay ministries. Reverse Advent Calendar sacks (RAC-SACKs) were distributed to members to transport their food donations from home to Hopewell UMC. The RAC-SACKS also contained instructions and a list of items most needed by the food pantry. Additionally, participants were asked to pray for the people and the families that were to receive the food. Congregation members placed their donations in the church narthex, which featured a large Advent calendar picturing various food items on each day of the month. Nonperishables collected by the congregation included cereal, instant potatoes and stuffing, pasta and jarred sauce and
peanut butter and jelly. The items will be delivered to the Lord’s Pantry later in January when holiday food drives end or possibly on the Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service. “In January and February (the food bank’s) shelves are (depleted),” noted Becky Bennington, church administrator. Both Boyd and Bennington said that the effort was a tangible way to help others in need. “Our goal was 4,000 items, and we surpassed that,” Bennington said. “It has been amazing to watch the pile of food grow.” “This is the first year that we have done this, but it has been so successful and fun that I suspect we have started a new tradition this year which will continue,” Boyd added.
Congregation members at Hopewell United Methodist Church recently took part in a Reverse Advent Calendar program by collecting nonperishable food items during the four weeks preceding Christmas. The food will be given to the Lord’s Pantry of Downingtown.

Parkesburg Sets Public Workshop, Open House By Francine Fulton
Parkesburg-area residents are invited to a public workshop and open house on Thursday, Jan. 10, from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Parkesburg Point, 700 Main St., Parkesburg, to discuss the borough’s comprehensive plan, which will detail long-range goals for the borough and cover topics such as land use, transportation, economic development, housing, public facilities and natural resources. No formal presentation will be given, so residents may drop in any time during the evening to provide their input. Light refreshments will be available. Members of the public will be invited to express their ideas and ask questions about the comprehensive plan, described by officials as the borough’s “road map for the future.” During the open house, there will be various stations covering different goals, called priorities. “There will be an opportunity to give feedback, and there will be an activity at each station,” noted Mark Gillen, senior community planner with the Chester County Planning Commission. One of the priorities will be connectivity. “We will have a map and a magic marker and ask people to show us where they would like to see additional sidewalks and trail connections,” Gillen explained. “At the economic development (station), we will ask people what types of business they would like to see in the borough.” Gillen noted that another station will cover community amenities and resources. “That would be parks and recreation areas and where a resident may want to see a
new park or recreational facilities like a dog park or a basketball court - whatever they can creatively come up with,” he stated. He noted that residents of Parkesburg and surrounding communities as well as those who own businesses in the area are encouraged to attend. “We will not turn anyone away, but we will have a pin map when they come in to show us where they live in the borough or where their business is,” said Gillen. “We want to hear from people who work, live or play in the borough.” The event will be casual with no scheduled guest speakers. “We thought about doing a presentation, but we don’t want people to just sit and listen. We just want to get feedback,” Gillen added. “We are not there to talk; we are there to listen.” According to borough representatives, the goal of a comprehensive plan is to identify existing conditions, define a vision for Parkesburg Borough’s future and provide a series of actions to achieve that vision over the next 10 years. Chester County’s comprehensive policy plan, Landscapes3, which was adopted in 2018, designates the entire Borough of Parkesburg as an Urban Center. According to the Landscapes3 document, Urban Center landscapes include “historic downtowns and established neighborhoods that serve as civic, economic and population centers with a traditional town character. Urban Centers will accommodate substantial future growth at a medium to high intensity with a mix of uses, including commercial, institutional and cultural destinations. Transportation infrastructure and amenities support a walkable community that is
integrated into the public transportation and roadway systems.” Development of Parkesburg’s comprehensive plan is being led by a 10member task force consisting of representatives of the borough council, the planning commission, local business
owners and borough residents. For more information on the comprehensive plan, readers may visit www.parkesburg.org. In the case of inclement weather on the day of the open house, cancellation information will be posted on the website.
Parks and recreation will be one of the topics addressed in Parkesburg Borough’s comprehensive plan. A public workshop and open house to discuss the plan will be held on Jan. 10 at the Parkesburg Point. Auto Home Business Farm Life Health 5406 Lincoln Hwy. P.O. Box 189 Gap, PA 17527

The Chester County Controller’s Office recently received notification of an award bestowed upon it by the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and
Hopewell UMC from pg 1 holiday dinner that included turkey, ham, cranberry sauce, baked macaroni and cheese, stuffing, corn, green beans and mashed potatoes with gravy. There was also an appetizer table that offered green salad, coleslaw, crackers and cheese and other snacks. For dessert, attendees enjoyed cookies and an assortment of pies, including pumpkin, apple, peach and blueberry, which were donated by a local business. The dinner was held in the church’s Family Life Center, which was decorated for the occasion and filled with the sounds of Christmas music played on a stereo. Attendees took home cards made in advance by students from Hopewell Christian Preschool and the church’s Sunday school class. The Rev. Amy Banka, the new lead pastor at Hopewell UMC, provided a prayer before the meal. According to church administrator Becky Bennington, event organizer, about 30 church volunteers helped out at the event, including those who visited the church early in the morning for setup. Volunteer Karl Findeison, who was in charge of cooking the meal, also arrived early to place all of the turkeys in the oven. Bennington said that each year people of all ages and backgrounds attend the dinner and some make it a yearly tradition. “It’s open to anyone. It’s a place where people can share a meal together,” she stated. “Some families come back every year. One man even brings his own stool because he doesn’t
like our chairs,” she said with a smile. “A woman was here last year and asked us to pray for her because she had cancer. This year she came back and is healthy and doing well.” Following the dinner, attendees were invited to take home the extra food in takeout containers provided by the church. “Everyone goes home with a second meal,” said Bennington. Additionally, 20 takeout meals were delivered to Safe Harbor of Chester County. As they left the dinner, visitors were also presented gift bags filled with candy. A few new people attended the dinner thanks to a free shuttle service that was offered for the first time from The Well, Hopewell UMC’s community center located at 107 W. Lancaster Ave., Downingtown. “We hope more people take advantage of that service next year,” Bennington said. Hopewell UMC is located at 852 Hopewell Road, Downingtown. Worship services at Hopewell include a Saturday contemporary service at 5:25 p.m. in the main sanctuary. Sunday traditional worship services are held at 8 and 9:30 a.m. in Bower Chapel, located on the church campus. last year. Still, there is more than $3.4 billion in unclaimed property waiting to be claimed by its rightful owners and about 1 in 10 residents have unclaimed property waiting for them. Individuals may search the registry by visiting www.patreasury.gov or calling the Treasury’s Bureau of Unclaimed Property toll-free at 800-222-2046. Unclaimed property is any financial asset that has gone unclaimed for a period of time, usually three years. Under Pennsylvania law, businesses are required to report this to Treasury, which serves as the custodian until it can find and verify its rightful legal owner. The registry includes items from forgotten bank accounts and stocks, uncashed checks, and rebates, the contents of safety deposit boxes and other unclaimed property. Dinniman encourages local residents to search the database and see if the Treasury may be holding unclaimed property for them.
