The Great Backyard Bird Count BY FRANCINE FULTON

P

eople of all ages are invited to take part in the Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC), a free, fun and easy event open to bird watchers of all ages. As part of the annual program, participants are asked to count birds in their own backyards or any site of their choice during this year’s GBBC, which will take place from Friday, Feb. 18, through Monday, Feb. 21. Participants are asked to watch the birds for 15 minutes or more at least once over the four days and then report their sightings online or on the free eBird mobile app. Complete information and instructions on how to enter data can be found at www.bird count.org by choosing “Participate.” “You can count birds on any of the

days and report it to the website, where you enter the birds you have seen,” explained Carol Majors, a member of the West Chester Bird Club. “It used to be that you count birds at your feeder. Now, you can count birds anywhere.” According to the website, the GBBC was launched in 1998 by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and National Audubon Society as a way for the community to collect data on wild birds and to display results in near real time. The data submitted by the public helps scientists to better understand global bird populations. “There is a database of bird sightings that is maintained by Cornell University, so people all over the world can go out birding anywhere and record their sightings in the database,” said Majors. “(The

data) gives ornithologists research material. They can see where bird (populations) are declining, or they can see trends where they are breeding or migrating to.” Majors is in charge of collecting data from members of the West Chester Bird Club. Founded in 1910, it is one of the oldest continually active bird clubs in the United States. “People assume it’s a Chester County club, (but) anyone can join from any place,” she noted. In addition to taking part in various bird counts, club members participate in field trips. Every Thursday, members can be found at Exton Park, 800 E. Swedesford Road, taking part in a bird walk from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. The walks are sponsored by the Friends of Exton Park.

Each walk at the park is led by a group leader who guides attendees as they search for birds. “You never know what you will see. A lot of experienced birders like to go out because they might see something that is rare,” Majors said, noting that a snowy owl was recently spotted in Lancaster. “A snowy owl lives (farther north) and sometimes they come down in the winter when there isn’t enough food where they are.” Members of the club, who pay a yearly fee, also take part in monthly club meetings, which are currently held via Zoom. A list of programs and field trips can be found at the aforementioned website. For the 2022 GBBC, it is recommended that people practice social distancing while bird watching and wear a mask when birding with others.

where the idea came from.”

When author Andrea Mower began writing her first book, “Boss & Hunky: The Adventures of an Out-of-Work Gargoyle,” she intended it to be a chapter book targeted to 8- to 13-yearolds. As it turns out, the story and characters in the book, which covers topics such as friendship, loyalty and hope, actually offer life lessons to adults as well.

She began the book in 2017, and it was published in the fall 2021. “I started to write ‘Boss and Hunky’ as a children’s play. In the beginning of the book there is a lot of dialogue as they sit on top of the building and talk about their fate,” she recalled. “Then, I turned it into a chapter book. As people started reading my draft, (I realized) this relates to everyone.” The book is highlighted by questions at the end of each chapter, which encourage readers to discuss concepts that are covered in the dialogue. “People can use it as a workbook,” she said. “People tell me this is a great business tool.”

“The artist in me wanted to create a fanciful story that children could embrace, and the professional in me wanted to relay a message to which readers of all ages could relate,” Mower said of her new book.

The story revolves around two gargoyles, Boss and Hunky, who adorn a 200-year-old structure in the fictional city of Metanoia. After the building is set to be demolished, the two are separated. A wealthy

Currently, Mower is planning a second book in the series, “Boss and Hunky: The Disappearance of the Despondent Doorstop.” “Every book will have a lesson. The lesson in the first book talks about being displaced (and) having to find your way,” she said. “The next one will talk about (what to do) when you are taken for granted.” For more information about the book, visit www.facebook.com /BossAndHunky or contact Mower at thehrgoddess@comcast.net.

and I saw this art deco (building) that used to be the Brigantine Inn. I thought there should be gargoyles on the building,” said Mower. “(I began thinking), ‘What happens to a gargoyle if their building is torn down?’ ‘What would happen if they lost their jobs and what could “I was actually in Brig- they do for a living?’ My antine on the beach husband said it sounded and my husband, Tim, like a good story, which is

Mower, who splits her time between homes in Exton and Brigantine, N.J., works in the human resources field, and she has used lessons learned in the business to create the book. “I always joked around that I was going to write a book and the (people I met) were all going to be in it,” she shared.

Mower chose animator Robert Bahn to illustrate the book. “Robert and I went to the University of

the Arts, but we graduated 31 years apart. I found him on the alumni website,” she said. “We met, he read the book and he got it. He (created) the pictures of the gargoyles that were in my head.”

Exploring Trails In Chester County map, visitors can find trails in the county that they may wish to explore. Users can find a trail by name or search by surface type; however, the map does not include most trails within housing developments or short, isolated segments of trails. “If you click on a trail, a box pops up with information on the trail, its surface and what uses are permitted,” Griffith noted.

Those looking for new areas to explore in Chester County are invited to view a new interactive trailfinder map that was unveiled by the Chester County Planning Commission. The map illustrates all the county’s publicly accessible trails and nature preserves, representing more than 550 miles of trails. She said that during the pandemic, people in the county frequented the more popular outdoor trails, especially the Chester Valley Trail, which became overcrowded. “This is a good way to let people see what trails are near their house that they may not have been to before or (find) hidden gems,” said Griffith. The Chester County Planning Commission hopes to add additional data and make improvements to the map interface over time and encourages users to provide feedback.

Coatesville Interact Club Gets A New Start Following two years of inactivity due to the pandemic, the Coatesville Area Senior High School Interact Club has re-formed and already is making a difference to fellow students, the school district and many of those residing in the Coatesville community. The Coatesville Interact Club, sponsored by the Rotary Club of Coatesville, had been active for years. The former adviser, William Brosius, a retired Coatesville Area School District (CASD) biology teacher, was instrumental in helping the club take part in many local activities, including food drives, roadside cleanups and efforts to learn about other cultures in

continued from page 4 nations around the world. Past efforts by the club have included sponsoring a collection of books destined for Africa, which eventually was the inspiration for the building of a library there.

Coatesville Rotary has two members associated with Interact - Renee Fairconeture and Martha Skiadas, a former Coatesville teacher. Together with Brosius and Wolf, they have been helping the students to develop leadership skills, as well as awareness and respect for people in need, while developing and implementing the ideals of Rotary’s motto, “Service Above Self.” One of the club’s most recent efforts was to raise funds to help the victims of Hurricane Ida, which severely affected many of Coatesville’s families. This past holiday season, members participated in ringing the bell for the Salvation Army at the Parkesburg Walmart. The idea behind Interact began in the early 1950s when Rotary Clubs were searching for ways to strengthen their efforts through inspiring youths. The name Interact is a combination of the words, “international” and “action.” The plan was to generate clubs directed toward students ages 12 to 18. It was hoped that the idea of “Service Above Self” would interest enough students to model Rotary’s goals and look for ways to help others both locally and around the world. The idea was approved in the early 1960s. The general theme was to promote positive change in the schools and community. While Interact clubs are under the guidance of the Rotary members, the clubs are student-run. PA residents scramble to get last Walking Liberty Rolls PENNSYLVANIA - Once Pennsylvania residents got wind that Pennsylvania State Restricted Bank Rolls filled with Silver Walking Liberties dating back to the early 1900’s were being handed over, there was a mad dash to get them. That’s because some of these U.S. Gov’t issued silver coins are already worth hundreds in collector value. “It’s like a run on the banks. The phones are ringing off the hook. That’s because everyone is trying to get them before they’re all gone,” according to officials at the National Mint and Treasury who say they can barely keep up with all the orders. In fact, they had to impose a strict limit of 4 Pennsylvania State Restricted Bank Rolls. So, if you get the chance to get your hands on these State Restricted Bank Rolls you better hurry because hundreds of Pennsylvania residents al-

ready have and you don’t want to miss out. You see, the U.S. Gov’t stopped minting these Silver Walking Liberties in 1947 and there can never be any more which makes them extremely collectible. And here’s the best part. The rolls are unsearched so there’s no telling how much they could be worth in collector value. That’s why at just the $39 state minimum set by National Mint and Treasury it’s a deal too good to pass up. But you better hurry because these Pennsylvania State Restricted Bank Rolls are the only ones known to exist and Pennsylvania residents are grabbing them up as fast as they can. That’s because they make amazing gifts for children, grandchildren and loved ones. Just imagine the look on their face when you hand them one of the State Restricted Rolls — they’ll tell everyone they know what you did for them.

GOT ‘EM: Residents all across Pennsylvania who get their hands on these State Restricted Silver Walking Liberty Bank Rolls are definitely showing them off. And here’s the best part, these Bank Rolls are loaded with U.S. Gov’t issued Silver Walking Liberty coins some dating back to the early 1900’s and worth up to 100 times their face value so everyone wants them.

HOW TO CLAIM THE LAST STATE RESTRICTED BANK ROLLS If you are a Pennsylvania State Resident read the important information below about claiming the State Silver Bank Rolls, then call the State Toll-Free Hotline at 8:30 am: 1-800-979-3771 EXT: RWB3502

Are these Silver Walking Liberties worth more than other half dollars:

Yes. These U.S. Gov’t issued Silver Walking Liberties were minted in the early 1900’s and will never be minted again. That makes them extremely collectible. The vast majority of half dollars minted after 1970 have no silver content at all and these Walking Liberties were one of the last silver coins minted for circulation. That’s why many of them now command hundreds in collector value so there’s no telling how much they could be worth in collector value someday.

How much are State Restricted Walking Liberty Silver Bank Rolls worth:

It’s impossible to say, but some of these U.S Gov’t issued Walking Liberties dating back to the early 1900’s are worth up to 100 times the face value and there are 15 in each Bank Roll so you better hurry if you want to get your hands on them. Collector values always fluctuate and there are never any guarantees. But we do know they are the only Pennsylvania State Silver Bank Rolls known to exist and Walking Liberties are highly collectible so anyone lucky enough to get their hands on these Silver Bank Rolls should hold onto them because there’s no telling how much they could be worth in collector value someday.

Why are so many Pennsylvania residents claiming them:

Because they are the only State Restricted Walking Liberty Silver Bank Rolls known to exist and everyone wants their share. Each Bank Roll contains a whopping 15 Silver Walking Liberties dating back to the early 1900’s some worth up to 100 times their face value. Best of all Pennsylvania residents are guaranteed to get them for the state minimum set by the National Mint and Treasury of just $39 per Silver Walking Liberty for the next two days.

How do I get the State Restricted Walking Liberty Silver Bank Rolls:

Pennsylvania residents are authorized to claim up to the limit of 4 State Restricted Walking Liberty Silver Bank Rolls by calling the State Toll Free Hotline at 1-800-979-3771 Ext. RWB3502 starting at precisely 8:30 am this morning. Everyone who does is getting the only State Restricted Walking Liberty Silver Bank Rolls known to exist. That’s a full Bank Roll containing 15 Silver Walking Liberties from the early 1900’s some worth up to 100 times their face value for just the state minimum set by the National Mint and Treasury of just $39 per Silver Walking Liberty, which is just $585 for the full Bank Rolls and that’s a real steal because non state residents are not permitted to call before 5 pm tomorrow and must pay $1,770 for each Pennsylvania State Restricted Walking Liberty Silver Bank Roll if any remain.

PENNSYLVANIA - “It’s a miracle these State Restricted Bank Rolls even exist. That’s why Hotline Operators are bracing for the flood of calls,” said Laura Lynne, U.S. Coin and Currency Director for the National Mint and Treasury. For the next 2 days the last remaining State of Pennsylvania Restricted Bank Rolls loaded with rarely seen U.S. Gov’t issued Silver Walking Liberties are actually being handed over to Pennsylvania residents who call the State Toll-Free Hotlines listed in today’s newspaper publication. “National Mint and Treasury recently spoke with its Chief Professional Numismatist who said ‘Very few people have ever actually saw one of these rarely seen Silver Walking Liberties issued by the U.S. Gov’t back in the early 1900’s. But to actually find them sealed away in State Restricted Bank Rolls is like finding buried treasure. So anyone lucky enough to get their hands on these Bank Rolls had better hold on to them,’” Lynne said. “Now that the State of Pennsylvania Restricted Bank Rolls are being offered up we won’t be surprised if thousands of Pennsylvania residents claim the maximum limit allowed of 4 Bank Rolls per resident before they’re all gone,” said Lynne. “That’s because after the Bank Rolls were loaded with 15 rarely seen Silver Walking Liberties, each verified to meet a minimum collector grade of very good or above, the dates and mint marks of the U.S. Gov’t issued Silver Walking Liberty Half Dollars sealed away inside the State of Pennsylvania Restricted Bank Rolls have never been searched. But, we do know that some of these coins date clear back to the early 1900’s and are worth up to 100 times their face value, so there is no telling what Pennsylvania residents will find until they sort through all the coins,” Lynne went on to say. And here’s the best part. If you are a resident of the state of Pennsylvania you cover only the $39 per coin state minimum set by the National Mint and Treasury, that’s fifteen rarely seen U.S. Gov’t issued Silver Walking Liberties worth up to 100 times their face value for just $585 which is a real steal because non state residents must pay $118 per coin which totals $1,770 if any coins remain after the 2-day deadline. The only thing Pennsylvania residents need to do is call the State Toll-Free Hotlines printed in today’s newspaper publication before the 2-day order deadline ends. “Rarely seen U.S. Gov’t issued silver coins like these are highly sought after, but we’ve never seen anything like this before. According to The Official Red Book, a Guide Book of United States Coins many Silver Walking Liberty Half Dollars are now worth $40 - $825 each in collector value,” Lynne said. “We’re guessing thousands of Pennsylvania residents will be taking the maximum limit of 4 Bank Rolls because they make such amazing gifts for any occasion for children, parents, grandparents, friends and loved ones,” Lynne continued. “We know the phones will be ringing off the hook. That’s why hundreds of Hotline Operators are standing by to answer the phones beginning at 8:30 am this morning. We’re going to do our best, but with just 2 days to answer all the calls it won’t be easy. So make sure to tell everyone to keep calling if all lines are busy. We’ll do our best to answer them all.” Lynne said. The only thing readers of today’s newspaper publication need to do is make sure they are a resident of the state of Pennsylvania and call the National Toll-Free Hotlines before the 2-day deadline ends midnight tomorrow.

Surviving Everyday Life Together BY FRANCINE FULTON February is the month when Valentine’s Day is celebrated. This often means a dinner out for couples or maybe an exchange of flowers or candy. But while Valentine’s Day is what Hallmark movies and greeting cards are made of, the holiday should really be about how important it is to have loved ones in our lives. For both couples and singles alike, it is necessary to have a support network of both friends and family members. They make the happy times even better and the difficult times easier. One of my favorite reality shows that was on a few years ago was “Survivorman” with Les Stroud. As part of the show’s premise, Les was dropped off in the middle of nowhere and asked to survive for a week with no equipment or supplies, except maybe a pocketknife. Since he did all the filming on his own, he was not even accompanied by a cameraman. His only “friend” was his harmonica, which he played at night to pass the time. While we are not asked to build our own shelter, hunt for food or start a fire, everyday life brings many obstacles to overcome. While not debilitating

or life-threatening, these minor inconveniences make life just a little bit more challenging. On a typical week, any one of these scenarios can happen: our computer deletes a file, which is irretrievable; packages don’t arrive in time, or they are lost in another state or country; we learn that the warranty on the clothes dryer that just gave out expired a month ago; or the takeout food we ordered has spilled in the bag. For those who travel, flights are canceled or delayed, and luggage is lost. Back at home, the pharmacist is out for lunch when we arrive to have our prescription filled; now we have an hour to kill. The storewide 50% off sale doesn’t apply to the one item that we need to buy. We finally take a vacation day, but we have to spend it at the auto dealership because our check engine light comes on. The internet goes out and we spend our day off stuck in the house waiting for the technician because the only window of time the cable company can give you is between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. And why is that when we are late for an appointment, we get behind the slowest driver on the road and we silently pray in our cars that he or she will turn off at the next intersection? And if they

DEADLINES

do make a turn, it’s usually without using their turn signal. We are dead tired from a long day of work, but when we get to bed, sleep eludes us. It snows, but not enough to close school or miss work, but just enough to make driving treacherous. The road we use to get to and from everywhere includes a bridge that is now under construction; completion date - a year from now. However, even though there are bumps in the road, we find solace in our homes and with our friends and family. So this Valentine’s Day, thank the people in your life who mean something to you, whether it be a significant other, a relative, a co-worker or a friend. Let them know that you cannot navigate all of life’s obstacles without their help. And that because of them, there’s no reason to learn how to play the harmonica.
