Pope John Paul II Regional Catholic Elementary School eighth-graders (from left) Riley Kinzeler, Evy Winter, Addison Egan and Camryn Foster work on their project for the STREAM (Science, Technology, Religion, Engineering, Arts and Math) Expo, which will be held during a community open house on Jan. 26. The open house will kick off the Catholic Schools Week celebration at the school.

When Pope John Paul II Regional Catholic Elementary School (PJP II) holds its community open house on Sunday, Jan. 26, visitors will be able to view a STREAM (Science, Technology, Religion, Engineering, Arts and Math) Expo in the school gymnasium. STREAM is unique to Catholic school because the “R” aspect has been added to incorporate faith-based learning in the curriculum. At PJP II, fifth- through eighthgraders have completed projects for the expo in collaboration with ProjectEngin, a program that has students using STREAM to tackle real-world issues based on the United See STREAM Expo pg 2

Therapy Dog Provides Hope And Comfort Local Graduate Forms Landscaping Company By Francine Fulton

The Chester County Board of Commissioners,

Freddie, accompanied by his owners, Lara and Tom Dushkewich, recently made his 200th visit as a therapy dog to the Domestic Violence Center of Chester County.

When Lara Dushkewich and her husband, Tom, rescued Freddie, a boxer/beagle mix, from a North Carolina shelter, she never expected that Freddie would become a therapy dog bringing hope and comfort to senior citizens and to victims of domestic violence. Lara learned about Freddie’s natural calming tendencies while visiting her grandmother in a nursing home. “The first week I had him when he was about a year old, I brought him to see my grandmother, who was recovering from an illness at the nursing home,” Lara recalled. “He walked right in and had an instant connection with my grandmother. My grandmother went through the various stages of ability - (using a) cane, a walker, a wheelchair and then (becoming) bedridden. Through all of that, he was gentle and he didn’t need treats to get him to sit and stay. He learned through his engagement with my grandmother. He was not adopted to be a therapy dog, but he became one.” Freddie, now 11, who was certified in 2014 through Therapy Dogs International, regularly visits the Domestic Violence Center of Chester County (DVCCC), where Lara is a board member and an See Therapy Dog pg 4

Even though he is only 18 years old, Chase Gallagher is already a successful entrepreneur and business owner. Chase, a graduate of Downingtown High School East (DHSE), is the owner of a local landscaping company called Buzz Cut Lawn Care and Landscaping, a full-service lawn care, landscaping and snow removal company based in Chester Springs. Chase, who has a severe kidney disease known as membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis (MPGN), donates a portion of his business profits to NephCure Kidney International, a nonprofit organization that researches MPGN and other kidney diseases.

his illness with medication. In the future, he may have to undergo dialysis and eventually receive a kidney transplant. “Basically, we don’t know how some people get the disease; it’s not genetic,” he stated. “It destroys the kidneys over time. If your kidney function is at a certain level, there is a limit to your energy level, which is an issue.” After mowing his own family’s lawn for years, Chase started the business in the summer of 2013. He watched many landscaping and business shows, including YouTube’s “Geek to Freak” and “Lawn Care Millionaire.” Chase’s business quickly grew from cutting a few lawns after school to a full-blown business. “I started this in middle school in seventh grade. I sent out flyers and mailers, and as the years progressed, I (created) a Facebook page and website and I belong to a networking group. Word of mouth is huge (in growing a business),” he said, noting that he completed his junior and senior high school years with DHSE via online courses so that he

could focus his efforts on his business. Chase was also able to purchase the necessary equipment needed for the business. “I saved money and had to sell my dirt bike, and I bought a zero-turn (lawn mower), a trailer and weed whacker. I used my brother’s SUV in the beginning, but we had to get a truck,” he said. “Eventually, I got more equipment, and luckily, before this season, I invested in a snow removal truck.” During the busy months of spring and summer, Chase hires employees to help with the work load. “I do have employees depending on the season. In the spring, I’ll have part-time help on the weekends (high school) seniors who can help out,” he said. “My business started with lawn care, but we are trying to focus on landscaping, spring cleanup, mulching, landscape maintenance, storm water drainage and management and fall cleanup.” Chase reported that his donation to NephCure Kidney International has increased each year that he has been in business. Each year, Chase presents the

donation to NephCure Kidney International at its annual fundraising dinner. His mother, Beth Ann Foeppel, is a volunteer with the organization. She helps plan the dinner and organizes the gift basket drawing at the event. “(NephCure) specializes in these out-ofthe-box kidney diseases. My mom started working with them six years ago when I was diagnosed,” Chase explained. “They have a dinner every year that we go to on the Philadelphia Main Line.” The 2019 event, “Countdown to a Cure,” was held in the fall at The Inn at Villanova University. Chase plans to continue to grow his business and to expand his services. “I plan on sticking with this business. I love this area, and it’s perfect for it,” he stated. “I am also an entrepreneur and want to start saving money to invest in real estate and other businesses. “ Chase plans to launch Gallco Powerwashing this spring. The week will conclude with a closing Mass at 9:30 a.m. on Jan. 31 at St. Peter Church, located next to the school. Students will be treated to a special snack. A new community service activity will also take place during CSW this year. Teachers and students from each classroom will make blankets for donation to Cozies 4 Chemo, a nonprofit organization that provides hand-tied fleece blankets to cancer

patients throughout the United States and abroad. “We collected donations to purchase fleece blanket kits, and each class will make the blankets together,” Samson said. PJP II serves the parishes of St. Peter in West Brandywine, Our Lady of the Rosary and St. Joseph in Coatesville and Our Lady of Consolation in Parkesburg. Preventive Care Involves Safeguarding Mental Health Preventive care is often looked at as the areas people need to focus on to protect their physical well-being. For example, a healthy diet and routine exercise are often viewed as lifestyle choices that can make people feel better physically. But taking steps to protect one’s mental health also is vital to a long, productive life. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) notes that positive mental health and mental wellness can have a profoundly positive impact on a person’s life. Positive mental health can help people realize their full potential, cope with the stresses of life, and make meaningful contributions to

their communities. Learning to recognize the early warning signs of mental health problems can help prevent such problems from escalating. The DHHS advises anyone feeling these symptoms or recognizing these signs in others to seek help for themselves or their loved ones: · Eating or sleeping too much or too little · Pulling away from people and usual activities · Having low or no energy · Feeling numb or as if nothing matters · Unexplained aches and pains · Feeling helpless or hopeless · Smoking, drinking, or using drugs more than usual

Chester County Government has added national recognition for performance management leadership to its list of accolades. The International City/County Management Association (ICMA) recently bestowed a Certificate of Achievement to the county, noting the data-driven management and reporting efforts established through Chester County’s Managing for Results process. Borne out of the county’s Strategic Plan, Managing for Results gives county departments and staff a formula in determining how their work, actions and behavior support the overall strategic direction of the county. Managing for Results also strives to ensure accountability and transparency in Chester County government. The ICMA Certificate of Achievement is awarded to cities and counties based on

on whiteboards and learned more about Bentley’s software development and engineering business,” noted Maria Samson, PJP II development director. “(The students) are looking forward to a visit to Bentley Systems again this year.” PJP II is located at 2875 Manor Road (Route 82), Coatesville. The open house on Jan. 26 will be held from noon to 2 p.m.

STREAM Expo from pg 2 to improve the lives of those who live in impoverished countries. “Different grade levels are zoning in on different STGs. My kids are studying Earth science, so they are working on clean water, deforestation and sustainable cities and communities,” explained sixth-grade science teacher Julie Bigelow. “The kids really have to think on their own. They have to do research. (They learn that) there are other people in the world that don’t have what we have. We are so lucky. So, there is also a human kindness component.” Students work in teams to complete the projects. “They each have their own role within the group,” Bigelow explained. “There is a project manager, a country expert, a design engineer and a marketing person. The kids choose three things that they want to do, and we try to (match their interests).” One team developed a prototype that would address the deforestation caused by forest fires in the Amazon Rainforest or any forest. The team members designed a drone that will drop a pod that senses heat from the forest fire and alerts government authorities that there is a fire and provides the location of the fire. The name of their company is Vida Nova, which means “new life” in Portuguese, the Brazilian language. “Sixth-, seventh- and eighth-graders create a prototype,” Bigelow explained. “A prototype is their solution to a problem they are investigating, but on a smaller scale.” In addition to the students in the older grades, younger PJP II students take part in a school STREAM program. “For fifth-graders, it’s more of a math component,” Bigelow noted. “The younger grades do things as well, but their program is modified (to their age level).” This is the second year that PJP II has held a STREAM Expo, which is organized by Jill Wentzel, PJP II STEM coordinator. Unlike a traditional science fair, STREAM projects are completed in school. The projects will be judged prior to the expo on Friday, Jan. 24. “Each group is going to have three rounds of judging. The kids are actually presenting their projects, which includes a brochure, a prototype and a trifold board,” said Bigelow. “On Sunday, parents (and other visitors) can check out how the kids did.” Last year, the top three teams visited Bentley Systems in Exton. “They presented their projects to Bentley colleagues, answered questions about their prototypes, toured their corporate campus, collaborated

data that has been collected and verified and that ensures reliability, is used to train staff in performance measurement, and is reported to the public through budgets, newsletters, and information to elected officials.

active volunteer who has been certified to meet with clients. Freddie is also a frequent visitor to The Hickman, a senior living community in West Chester. On Dec. 4, DVCCC marked Freddie’s 200th official visit as a therapy dog to the facility. To celebrate the day, the staff members and shelter residents presented him with a special liver muffin cake. According to Melissa Baxter, DVCCC’s chief operating officer, Freddie is a welcome visitor who is loved by children and adults alike. “Freddie’s many visits to DVCCC over the years have brought comfort to scores of survivors of domestic violence and their children,” she said. “Freddie’s kind and gentle manner just draws people in. The love he shares and comfort he provides is heartwarming and, I believe, healing. It was an honor to share this special milestone with Freddie and Lara.” Lara said that bringing Freddie to the organization is very rewarding. “(I enjoy) seeing the smiles that he brings when he walks into the room, the children that run up to him, the survivor who is calmer because she is petting him and (Freddie) curled up with someone who needs a friend,” she stated. “The vibe that he gives is hard to put words to. Not only is he present, he truly is giving of his love.” Lara said that Freddie is affected by loss and grieved at her grandmother’s passing. “The last week that my grandmother was alive, she was in hospice,” Lara recalled. “We were sitting on the floor in her room, and I turned to Freddie and said, ‘I think it’s time for us to say goodbye.’ He put his paws on her bed and kissed her goodbye on her nose.” Freddie will continue his therapy dog work as long as possible. Because of the energy it takes, Lara limits Freddie’s visits to about three hours of “touch time” weekly. “He will do this until he shows me he does not want to do this anymore,” Lara said. “He had a herniated disc in 2018, and last summer after two surgeries he beat cancer.

Children at the Domestic Violence Center of Chester County enjoy visiting with Freddie, 11, a registered therapy dog. Freddie also visits The Hickman, a senior living community in West Chester. At 11, he is still feisty and still wants to go and do his work.” Freddie resides with Lara and Tom and his six rescue dog siblings, including one therapy dog in training. The mission of the DVCCC is to provide intervention, programs, outreach and advocacy to prevent, reduce and remedy domestic violence in Chester County. The agency provides an emergency safe house/shelter at a confidential address, long-term housing, referral and support services, counseling, children’s services and legal services. In addition to the confidential site, the center has outreach offices in Oxford, Kennett Square, Jennersville, Phoenixville and Coatesville and at the Chester County Justice Center. For more information, readers may call 610-431-3546. To contact the 24-hour domestic violence hotline, readers may call 888711-6270. Services are free and confidential. A video about the DVCCC can be found at www.youtube.com by searching for “Unmasking Domestic Violence 2019.” Freddie is featured at the 1:47 minute mark.

Commissioners from pg 1 In addition to the three county commissioners, the official swearing-in included elected row officers Deb Ryan as district attorney, Fredda Maddox as sheriff, Chris Pielli as recorder of deeds, Debbie Bookman as prothonotary and Michele Vaughn as register of wills, as well as Magisterial District Judges Martin Goch and James Kovaleski. The ceremonial swearing-in of all elected officials, judges and magisterial district judges took place on Jan. 4 at 11 a.m. in West Chester University’s Emilie K. Asplundh Concert Hall in West Chester.

The three incoming members of Chester County’s Board of Commissioners, Marian Moskowitz, Josh Maxwell and Michelle Kichline, took their official oaths of office, administered by President Judge Jacqueline C. Cody, on Jan. 2. Moskowitz was elected chair, and Maxwell was elected vice chair. The votes of the three-member board for chair and vice chair were unanimous. In anticipation of their official start on Jan. 6, the commissioners announced their plans to support and enhance the change in leadership, including the creation of a transition team designed to ensure a seamless process and to encourage the review of county procedures and practices. West Chester University president Christopher Fiorentino will chair the transition team, and the vice chair is David Thornburgh, president and CEO of the Committee of Seventy, the civic leadership organization that advances good government in the City of Philadelphia and across Pennsylvania.
