Girl Scouts Complete Bronze Award With SPCA Service Project By Francine Fulton

Members of Junior Girl Scout Troop 4204 of Downingtown, composed of 10- and 11-year-old girls who attend Brandywine Wallace Elementary School, recently completed their Bronze Award project by baking homemade dog treats and making rope pull toys for adoptable animals at the Brandywine Valley SPCA. The girls also personally delivered the items and visited with the dogs and cats at the shelter. Troop leader Tania Mann said that the girls voted to complete their project at the SPCA. They used a biscuit-making recipe provided by the SPCA. “The SPCA has four or five recipes on their website (to choose from),” Mann explained. The rope toys were made using green and white T-shirts cut into strips. The strips were tied tightly together and braided to form ropes. “I bought over 70

green and white T-shirts, and then someone donated 48 T-shirts when they heard about the project,” Mann said. “(To form the ropes) you trim the hem off the bottom of the T-shirt and cut them to form 2-inch-wide strips. Then, they roll up into a rope. It has stretchiness.” “We divided the white and green strands and knotted them and taught the girls how to create a kind of braid,” explained Mann. “They are made so that they are really tight so the dogs can’t chew through them.” The girls made the biscuits and most of the rope toys during a troop meeting with the help of parent volunteers. The remainder of the ropes were completed at home. The girls brought the dog biscuits and more than 60 rope toys to the SPCA during their visit on Jan. 15. “Community engagement coordinator Amanda (Rodriguez) gave us a tour of the entire facility, in which we learned See Bronze Award pg 5

St. Paul’s Lutheran Church Welcomes New Pastor By Francine Fulton

By Francine Fulton

The newly formed Explorer Post 1747, open to young men and women ages 14 to 21, meets at the Mill at Anselma, a national historic landmark located in Chester Springs. The group’s next meeting will take place on Feb. 8.

When the Rev. Bradley Burke was named the lead pastor at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Exton last fall, he began an effort not only to build on all the successful programs already in place at the church but to prepare the congregation for expansion and growth to meet the changing needs of the community. “ We are trying to do structural work to figure out how we build ourselves as an organization so we can provide for people’s needs,” Burke said. “ We want to make sure people are taken care of. ministries for people of all ages and different walks of life.” Prior to joining St. Paul’s, Burke, a graduate of the University of Scranton and the Lutheran Theological Seminary in Philadelphia, was assistant to the bishop in the Southeastern Pennsylvania Synod. “I was specialized in various areas on the bishop’s staff - things like global mission, youth ministry and congregational leadership,” he noted. Burke has also served at St. Michael Lutheran Church in Unionville and St. Timothy’s Lutheran Church in Aston. Since his arrival at St. Paul’s, Burke has been getting to know the people of the congregation and learning about their needs. “I am getting to know ... what people are used to and what people are hungry for and hasn’t been done but there is a need or a growing interest for,” he said. “I am a big fan of experimentation and the church being fresh and engaging for people.” He noted that congregations today must learn ways to keep people involved with the church through attendance at services

and through community service. “I think churches are going to be more of an alternative kind of community where people find something that, by and large, our society does not offer,” Burke explained. “Churches that are healthy are engaged with their community and opening their doors to community partners and groups.” At St. Paul’s, a traditional Sunday worship service is held 8 a.m. and an informal service is offered at 10:45 a.m. “The music is very different (between the two services),” Burke said. “The first one is exactly what you would expect (from a traditional service); the second one is a range of more contemporary music from the last 30 years or so.” Sunday school for people of all ages meets at 9:15 a.m. The church also offers a Rejoicing Spirits Worship Service for people with developmental disabilities on the second Sunday of each month at 4 p.m. Burke said that his sermons focus on helping people with their daily struggles. As a huge “Star Wars” fan, he sometimes infuses humor into his Sunday

They go out and clean them and maintain them and check them for trends.” Some volunteers will wade in the water to collect creatures that live in the streams. “(Stewards) collect macroinvertebrates (bugs), which are an indicator of a healthy stream,” said Hopkins-Doerr. “They are sensitive to pollution. If there is (excess) sediment or chlorine, they will show it.” Volunteers also have an opportunity to participate in stream restoration. “Stream restoration work could be putting in live stakes. These are branch cuttings from certain trees that if you put them in the ground, they will root and stabilize the stream bank,” said Hopkins-Doerr. Finally, volunteers educate adults and children about the environment. “(Stewards) give presentations to the public,” Hopkins-Doerr noted. “It can be at a school, at libraries and for different groups that reach out requesting a presentation.” Volunteers come from a variety of backgrounds. Those under age 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian at all events. “The background doesn’t matter - we have teachers, engineers, someone who works in transportation and retirees. It runs

Penn State Master Watershed Stewards are volunteers from the community who are dedicated to improving the health of local streams, rivers and other natural resources. Those interested in taking part in the program are invited to attend free information sessions that will be held locally and online. An information session has been set for Saturday, Feb. 1, from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at Penn State Extension, 601 Westtown Road, Suite 370, West Chester. Another session will take place on Tuesday, Feb. 4, from 6 to 7 p.m. at the New Garden Township Building, 200 Starr Road, Landenberg. The online session will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 11, from 6 to 7 p.m. at http:// psu.zoom.us/j/433763719. During the free public information sessions, attendees will learn about the Master Watershed Stewards and their work in the community. “I will talk about the programs and some of the projects we do, and some of our stewards (will speak),” explained Meagan Hopkins-Doerr, Master Watershed Steward/Master Gardener coordinator. “I’ll have applications there if anyone is

interested.” To register for an information session, readers may visit http://extension.psu.edu/master -watershed-steward-information -meeting. Applicants who are accepted into the program will be required to complete 40 hours of training from a wide range of professionals and educators. This year, training sessions will be held on Tuesdays, Feb. 25 through May 19, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at locations in southern Chester County. The training includes three Saturday field trips as well. Topics covered during the training will include land use, stream ecology, groundwater, wetlands, wildlife, geology, invasive plants and stormwater management. Master Watershed Stewards take part in various projects, such as planting trees, hosting stream and trash cleanups and organizing community walks. Some of the events are held in conjunction with local watershed associations. “There are options for whatever interests the volunteer. Some people like to go out to festivals and talk to homeowners,” said Hopkins-Doerr. “Others like to take care of stream monitoring

messages by incorporating the movie’s music and dialogue. “I jokingly say this, but one of my principles of ministry is that we if we are not having fun and finding joy in this, we are doing it wrong,” he said. “The Gospel is a message of freedom, of joy and hope. If we are not incarnating that, we are failing in our role as evangelists - as people who tell the story.” Future plans at St. Paul’s call for hiring a director of youth and family ministries, offering an expanded youth program and possibly scheduling another service. “We’re hoping to expand what we are doing in children’s and youth ministry pretty robustly, starting with (the school year in the fall),” said Burke. “We are exploring adding an interactive worship service that would be learning and worship so families could do that together. Children are impoverished in terms of how much family time they get these days because of how busy our culture is. Our whole week is bouncing around to separate places. Maybe church could be the one place where we don’t do that.” Burke lives in Downingtown with his wife, Kim, and their 8year-old son, Liam. “My family and I are blessed to be joining such a warm, caring group of people who are genuinely exploring what it means to live out God’s will in these changing times,” he stated. St. Paul’s Lutheran Church is located at 104 S. Village Ave., Exton (Lionville). For more information about church activities, readers may visit www.stpaulslionville.org.

the gamut,” Hopkins-Doerr said. The Master Watershed Steward Program is offered in both Chester and Delaware counties. “We have more of an agriculture focus in Chester County,” Hopkins-Doerr noted. “In Delaware County, we focus on urban stormwater issues.” Hopkins-Doerr encourages all those interested in the program to attend one of the upcoming information sessions. Attendees are not obligated to apply for the program. “(Volunteering) is fun, plus you are making a difference,” she stated. NAP Grant Given To Coatesville An $80,000 Neighborhood Assistance Program (NAP) grant has been awarded to assist the Coatesville commercial district. The program promotes community participation and collaborations among nonprofits, businesses, and residents. In Coatesville, 2nd Century Alliance, in partnership with Chester County, was awarded the $80,000 grant to help kickstart a commercial district makeover. The first year of the NAP funds allowed for the hire of a full-time downtown coordinator whose focus is the revitalization of the city’s commercial core. First-year funding also supports a façade grant program and a sustainable, clean, safe, and green program to improve the aesthetics of the area as the downtown manager works to implement those programs. The second-year grant funding will continue the developments of the first year, with focus on rehabilitation of blighted properties, business retention, construction of and improvements for quality residential space, attracting a diverse and unique group of retail and hospitality businesses, adding parking, reducing criminal activity, and implementing green and environmentally friendly programs.

Fresh Start from pg 1 Through a new service offered by the Chester County court system, any juveniles who successfully complete a diversion program will have their record expunged when they turn 18 years old, provided they meet eligibility requirements. The move is the result of recommendations by Chester County’s Juvenile Probation Office and is made in consultation and cooperation with the Chester County Clerk of Courts Office, District Attorney’s Office and Chester County Courts. This Chester County service applies to all eligible juveniles who turned 18 on or after Aug. 1, 2019. “Currently, juveniles who complete a diversion program can initiate the expungement process after six months have passed since their supervision ended if they have remained out of the criminal justice system,” said Yolanda Van de Krol, Chester County’s clerk of courts. “Most juveniles don’t take this action and then find that information on their non-adjudicated record may impact applications for college, for jobs or even for renting apartments. The information is sealed in our office, but it can get out by other means.” The types of records that will be expunged for first-time offenders who successfully completed a diversion program include misdemeanors such as criminal mischief, criminal trespass or disorderly conduct. It is estimated that this new service will lead to 100 to 150 additional expungements per year, but the system being put in place means the new service will be absorbed within the existing responsibilities of the Clerk of Courts Office and the other offices. No more staff members will be added. Prior to formally filing an expungement motion of an 18year-old to the court, the Juvenile Probation Office will determine eligibility and provide the motion to the District Attorney’s Office. If there is no objection, the order will then be submitted to the court for consideration. If the court approves the expungement, the Clerk of Courts Office will send a certified copy of the expungement order to all agencies having been involved with the juvenile. Similar to the county’s statewide Clean Slate program that seals but does not expunge records, this expungement service for non-adjudicated juveniles will not require any action by the juvenile to initiate the process and will not include follow-up correspondence to juveniles whose records have been expunged.

Cookie Fundraiser from pg 1 By Francine Fulton

The aroma of melting chocolate filled Grove United Methodist Church recently as volunteers dipped Oreo cookies in chocolate as part of an annual fundraiser to support Rise Against Hunger (formerly Stop Hunger Now). Rise Against Hunter, scheduled for Sunday, March 29, is a yearly event at Grove Church where volunteers pack dried food into packages for distribution to hungry people around the world. “We will pack 27,000 meals (that day). Each of the meals costs 34 cents, so we have to raise $9,000,” explained church member Linda Schneider. As part of the fundraising efforts, more than 20 volunteers gathered in the church’s fellowship hall on Jan. 18 to dip the cookies and top them with sprinkles. Schneider noted that most of the supplies for the day were donated. “It takes 133 bags of chocolate chips. Someone said you could smell chocolate in the parking lot,” she said. “We are

making 3,600 chocolate-covered Oreos, so we will have 300-some boxes to sell. We package them in boxes of 12 per box, and we sell them for the three Sundays as Valentine’s gifts.” The cookies were sold on Jan. 26, and they will be available on Sundays, Feb. 2 and 9, at the church, where traditional worship services are held at 8 and 9:30 a.m. There is also a contemporary worship service offered at 11 a.m. When asked how the volunteers resisted tasting the chocolate-covered Oreos, Schneider smiled and responded, “Who’s to say that’s not happening?” According to www.riseagainsthunger.org, more than 400,000 volunteers package meals every year. The mealpacking events are designed to be fun, hands-on service projects that are suitable for people of all ages. In an assembly-line fashion, volunteers scoop rice, soy, dehydrated vegetables and a flavoring mix into small packages. Water can be added to the ingredients, which include 20 essential vitamins and minerals, to

create soup and other meals. The food is stored easily, transports quickly and has a shelf life of two years. At Grove Church, more than 100 helpers of all ages will work together on March 29 to scoop, weigh and seal the packages. Community members are invited to participate. Grove United Methodist Church is located at 490 W. Boot Road, West Chester. For more information, to purchase cookies or to volunteer for the March meal packing event, readers may call 610-696-2663. More information about the church is available at www.grovechurch.org and by searching for “Grove United Methodist Church - West Chester” on Facebook. The YMCA of Greater Brandywine (YGBW) is starting the new year with its All-In Member Challenge. From Jan. 6 to Sunday, March 1, YGBW members are eligible to earn points by working out and/or referring friends to the YMCA. Those who earn points are entered into weekly

drawings for gift cards. At the end of the challenge, the person with the most points will receive a specially valued gift card. If there is a tie, the person who visited his or her YMCA branch the most over the eight-week challenge will win. If there is still a tie, a drawing will be held to determine the winner.

As extra motivation, anyone who is not a member of the YGBW but wants to participate in the challenge will have the join fee waived when they sign up for a 12month membership. Readers may visit www.ymcagbw.org/blog/all -member-challenge-2020 for details on the challenge.

Explorer Post from pg 1 fourth meeting of the newly formed post. “For the first meeting, we had a physical therapist,” Holling said. “The second was a (newspaper) reporter, and for the third meeting, we had a nurse.” March’s meeting will feature a talk by a local actor. Holling emphasized that youths from any geographical area are invited to join the post. “Kids who want to come and learn and find out what it’s about can come and visit (before joining),” he noted. “We have one group of kids who come from southern Chester County.” Holling explained that the historic site contacted Boy Scouts of America when deciding to form a post at the site. “We are part of the Horseshoe Trail District,” he said. “Right now, we are meeting monthly and we get around 10 (attendees). We would like to get 20 to 30 kids.” In addition to learning about future career options from guest speakers, youths are provided

information about the Mill at Anselma. “For the first meeting, we took the kids on a tour,” Holling stated. “My polling of them afterward (determined that) all found it interesting and fascinating. We’ll keep doing that. We want them to be an integral part of the mill.” The Mill at Anselma is a Colonial-era custom grist mill that features a 16-foot steel water wheel, which is powered by Colonial-era wooden gears and was used to produce cornmeal and flour. The site, which was recognized as a National Historic Landmark in 2005, is maintained by the Mill at Anselma Preservation and Education Trust, a nonprofit organization that formed in 1998. Future plans for Explorer Post 1747 include performing community service at the mill and other local sites. “There’s a duality to what we provide - education and community service,” said Holling. “In West Pikeland there are other nonprofits such as His-

toric Yellow Springs and the Chester Springs Library, and those folks are aware that we started the program and will expand to include them in the scope of community service. We are keeping it to West Pikeland (for now), but we want to expand it over time to cover more historic sites.” Holling believes that having the post meet at the mill will draw even more attention to the historically significant site. “It is not uncommon for people to say, ‘I have driven past this place for years and I didn’t know what it was,’” he said. Future Explorer Post 1747 programs will focus on the fields youths are interested in pursuing in their careers, including marketing, medical arts and social media. “We’re still finding things kids are interested in,” Holling said. The Mill at Anselma is located 1730 Conestoga Road, Chester Springs. More information about the mill is available at www.anselmamill.org.

What a treat for both human and animal!” A highlight of the visit was that some of the animals the girls met were adopted. “Shortly after we arrived, we were thrilled to witness a dog being adopted and taking his new rope home with him,” said Mann. “Before we left, the girls asked to see the cats again, and the kitten that we saw earlier was also being adopted.” She noted that one of the girls was afraid of dogs prior to

tory,” an exhibition that explores the women’s suffrage movement. The exhibit will be on view from Saturday, Feb. 1, through Sunday, June 7. The long road to women’s suffrage, spanning the 19th and early 20th centuries, was very different from political movements today. Instead of using televised messages and digital media, the suffragists spread their message through magazines, political cartoons, posters, plays, parades and even fashion. Focusing on the decade prior to ratification of the 19th Amendment in 1920, the exhibition examines the imagery of the suffrage movement. Organized by the Brandywine and curated by Amanda C. Burdan, Ph.D., “Votes for Women: A Visual History” will feature more than 200 artifacts from the suf-

tographs and banners from rallies and marches, including the 1913 Women’s Suffrage Procession in Washington, D.C. Examples of the costumes, clothing, sashes and other emblems of women’s activism worn by suffragists will be included in the presentation. As a way to recognize women of color who were part of the suffrage movement, the Brandywine has commissioned a diverse group of women artists to create a mural of illustrated portraits of some of the women who had a role in winning voting rights. The mural will include portraits of 14 local and national figures with accompanying biographies. The commissioned works will be completed in a variety of media and styles by various artists. In conjunction with “Votes for Women: A Visual History,” the

focus on historic and contemporary women’s issues. More information about the exhibit and the list of special programs can be found at www.brandywine.org /museum/exhibitions/voteswomen-visual-history. A concurrent exhibition, “Witness to History: Selma Photography of Stephen Somerstein,” will explore the historic 1965 civil rights march from Selma to Montgomery, Ala., which was a turning point in the civil rights movement that led to the passage of the Voting Rights Act. The exhibition will include 55 of the photographs taken by Stephen Somerstein on March 25, 1965, when he was 24 years old. With five cameras around his neck and only 15 rolls of film, Somerstein documented this moment in history, capturing photographs of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and

mous bystanders who had gathered along the route. “Witness to History: Selma Photography of Stephen Somerstein” is guest curated by Farrah Spott and will be on view from Feb. 1 to Sunday, June 14. The Brandywine River Museum of Art is located on Route 1 in Chadds Ford. The GPS address is 1 Hoffman’s Mill Road, Chadds Ford. An admission fee is charged. There is a discount for seniors age 65 and over, students and children age 6 and up. Children age 5 and under will be admitted for free. Reduced admission is offered in the month of January. The museum is open Wednesdays through Mondays and is closed on Tuesdays. Current hours of operation can be found at www.brandywine.org/hours or by calling 610-388-2700.

Dinniman Honors Coatesville Flower Shop Owners Holidays are often a time of joy, family traditions and gatherings with friends, but for those who have lost loved ones, the season can take on a different meaning - a poignant reminder of the grief they live with every day. Families like Greg and Dorrie DePedro, owners of the Coatesville Flower Shop, seek to utilize this reminder for good, as they help others to honor and remember their loved ones during the season and throughout the year. Fifteen years ago, the DePedros’ daughter, Lisa, passed away from a rare form of cancer. In honor of her legacy to “do something nice for someone today,” they began a project

to give away free roses every August. Since then, they estimate that they have distributed more than 100,000 roses for free - with customers given one dozen roses with the understanding that they keep one for themselves and give the other 11 to different people who need a smile. The DePedros especially encourage families of lost loved ones to participate, to spread happiness and remember their family members. Recently state Sen. Andy Dinniman visited their shop and presented them a Senate citation to recognize 15 years of “Lisa’s Roses.” The Coatesville Flower Shop is located at 259 E. Lincoln Highway, Coatesville.

Students Take Part In Discussion Montgomery School seventh- and eighth-graders participated in a discussion on climate change with climate specialist Dr. Ross Salawitch on Dec. 18, 2019. Salawitch, a professor in the Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Science and the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of Maryland, spoke for about 90 minutes with each grade level. Salawitch previously worked at the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif. His current research focuses on quantifica-

tion of the effects of human activity on atmospheric composition. He is a participant in numerous atmospheric chemistry field campaigns and Earth-observing satellite missions, including an ongoing effort to quantify the fluxes of atmospheric greenhouse gases in Maryland and nearby regions. Eighth-graders recently completed a project researching how alternative energies produce electricity. They calculated carbon footprints for electricity generated by their energies and compared them to carbon footprints

for electricity generated from coal. They also researched global warming, the greenhouse effect, and how this contributes to climate change. One goal of Salawitch’s visit was to inspire students to think about their own future careers in science. To read Salawitch’s biography, readers may visit www.chem.umd .edu/faculty-staff-directory/ facultydirectory/ross-j-salawitch. To learn more about the school, readers may visit www.montgomeryschool.org or call Marianne Kaplan at 610-601-4342 or email mkaplan@montgomeryschool.org.
