The Chester County Library (CCL) was recently named as one of America’s Top-Rated Libraries - earning the designation as a Star Library by Library Journal, a leading publication for the profession. This is the second year that CCL has received this distinction in the 12 years that Library Journal has published the index. This year, the index evaluated 6,333 public libraries across the country. CCL joins just 261 other libraries honored in the nation. The designation groups libraries with similar operating budgets together, then rates the libraries in five main categories: number of visitors, circulation, program attendance, public internet use and electronic circulation. Libraries were evaluated and compared based on expenditure categories. In order to qualify for consideration, libraries must be a public entity, have a service area with a population of at least 1,000 residents and have a total operating expenditure of at least $10,000. CCL received a three-star designation within the $5 million to $9.9 million See Library pg 4

Floyd Rawleigh is head of the chorus/vocal ensemble and the music theater program at DMS, a program that has brought stage productions to the school since the school’s opening in 1997. “The students from the cast and crew bring so much talent year after year, Rawleigh said, noting that the spring play is chosen a year in advance. “We think about the students we are currently working with and those who will continue with us in the coming year. We also think about balancing the types of shows we have done in previous years. Rawleigh said that cast members have been busy learning lines and the production’s musical score, while the production staff is busy with the stage work necessary to bring the show to life. “I don’t think this show is exceptionally difficult (for the actors), he stated. “The real challenge of this show is the number and difficulty of scene changes for the stage crew and the challenge of bringing Mary’s magic to the stage. That involves our stage crew, sound crew and lighting crew - all of whom are working very hard. “Mary Poppins is based on the book series by P.L. Travers, which is the pen name adopted by

British novelist Helen Lyndon Goff. Goff lost her father during childhood, and her childhood experiences were the inspiration for creating the character of Mary Poppins. The book series was adapted by Walt Disney into a 1964 musical film starring Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke. “We did not watch the movie collectively, but I have heard many (students) reference it during our preparation, stated Rawleigh. “They have, as many of us adults, grown up with Mary Poppins, though not all of them were familiar with it as a stage show. The play has been double cast to allow more students to participate. expenditure category. The Star Library designation is just one of the many honors that the library has received recently. In 2019, it earned the Pennsylvania Library Association’s State Library of the Year Award. Marguerite Dube, director of the Chester County Library and Henrietta Hankin Branch Library, attributes the accolades to the library staff members and the resources available at the library. “Our staff members are creative and innovative and are always looking for new ways to serve our patrons. We get comments all the time about how helpful they are,” Dube stated. “We also have a wide variety of resources that people are always surprised to discover, (including) museum passes, (Wi-Fi) hotspots, business resources, e-books and Digital Media Lab equipment, such as a 3-D printer and virtual/augmented reality equipment.” She also expressed gratitude to the county commissioners, the Friends of the Chester County Library and the Chester County Library Trustees for their support. Dube said that the most popular uses of the library include its internet access and its variety of children’s programs. “We do get a lot of people who come just to study or work quietly using our Wi-Fi. We have even seen people in the parking lot using the Wi-Fi before and after hours,” she said. “The children’s section is probably our most popular place,” Dube continued. “We do quite a few story times each day, and our Summer Reading Club and Science in the Summer programs are very popular.”
Dube commented that the library has changed dramatically over the nearly 20 years that she has been on staff. “As I mentioned, people use the library to access the internet through our Wi-Fi. They also use it as a gathering place to hold small meetings and collaborate,” she said. “There has been a much larger emphasis on technology, and our Digital Media Lab has become very popular, bringing people in who want to make, invent and tinker with the latest software and electronic gadgets,” she shared. “We just added a 24/7 Holds pickup locker in front of the library so people can access their items after hours. Of course, in addition to print books, we carry e-books, electronic magazines, a language learning database and many more electronic resources for education and business.” Future plans at the library include some structural changes. “The county actually approved a plan to redesign the first floor of the library beginning in 2021,” Dube noted. “The plan opens up the lobby area to relieve congestion, making it more accessible for wheelchairs, scooters and strollers,” Dube pointed out. “We will also be adding glass-enclosed workspaces for private or collaborate use in the reference area. Finally, we will be combining the reference and multimedia desks to provide more efficient service to our patrons.” The Chester County Library is located at 450 Exton Square Parkway, Exton. For more information, readers may visit www.chescolibraries.org.
be used) for indoor gym and school-wide events,” she stated. “We will use it for our annual Pajama Party With Santa, our book fairs, our Sensory Day, enrichment programs and our Christmas and spring programs, where parents can watch the kids sing.” She noted that graduation ceremonies will also be held in the large room. A playground is located adjacent to the church building for children to enjoy. “The facility is also one story, with no steps for little ones,” Elmore said. Elmore explained that establishing the school at the church was made possible thanks to the DUMC congregation, the DUMC board of trustees and church members Jim and Jenn Jameson and Jeffrey Hohman. “Our preschool was looking for a new home, and DUMC was wonderful,” she stated. “They met with us and forged ahead with this new endeavor. They are excited about having a preschool for the opportunity to bring young children into their church. We share a common goal and vision with DUMC to offer our current academic and inclusive curriculum in early education to children in the community.” The school offers programs on the following days for youngsters: Toddlers - Wednesdays from 10 to 11:15 a.m.; Playgroup - Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 to 11:15 a.m.; Age 3 - Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 to 11:30 a.m.; Young 4s - Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 9 to 11:30 a.m. with an optional fourth day; and Prekindergarten morning and afternoon options from three to five days. Extended
days are available on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays. The nondenominational academic preschool’s full curriculum includes art, music, science and nature, yoga, enrichment classes, field trips and special events. According to www.brandywine school.org, the mission statement of the school reads, in part, “Our curriculum in each grade level is carefully planned to stimulate each child’s spiritual, social, physical, intellectual and moral growth through enjoyable and challenging interaction with adults and other children. We strive to create a comfortable and secure environment governed by nondenominational, faith-based principles and resulting in a genuine enthusiasm for learning within each child, regardless of religion, race, creed, (or) ethnic or national origin.” Elmore said that being located at DUMC will provide further opportunities for the church and school to grow together. “Children are in a safe environment at the church, and we can partner with the church community for Trunk or Treat, vacation Bible school and summer camp activities,” she said. “The new space will give us potential to create more programming and summer offerings and more afternoon options as our school grows.” For more information about the Brandywine School of Early Learning, including registration information for the 2020-21 school year, readers may call 610383-9161 or contact Elmore at jelmore@brandywineschool.org. Chester County Sheriff Fredda Maddox introduced Marley, the newest member of the office, on Jan. 14. Following a training period, the 18-month-old Labrador retriever will replace the recently retired K-9 Melody as the courthouse comfort dog. K-9 Marley, who is partnered with Sgt. Janis Pickell, followed the same path to the Chester County Sheriff Office (CCSO) as K-9 Melody. He received training at the Seeing Eye in Morristown, N.J., a renowned guide dog facility. Occasionally, dogs do not meet the Seeing Eye’s specific requirements for service and become “career change” dogs, frequently finding a productive home in law enforcement or search and rescue. Sgt. Paul Bryant Jr., who heads the CCSO K-9 Unit, said that he was pleased that K-9 Marley became available days after he called the Seeing Eye center to make inquiries. Bryant also said that demand for K-9 Melody’s services more than tripled during her tenure of more than four years at the Chester County Justice Center. Pickell, one of K-9 Melody’s
handlers, said she expected the transition to full-time K-9 comfort duties would be seamless. K-9 Marley received a warm welcome from the entire office, where employees also said they look forward to watching him in action. In the meantime, their challenge will be to avoid interrupting K-9 Marley’s training regimen. During that period, deputies may need training to resist the natural impulse to pat Marley on the head.

Building on the success of last year’s event, SALT Performing Arts will host its second annual Princess Party fundraiser on Saturday, Feb. 8, at its theater in the West Pikeland Township Building, 1645 Art School Road, Chester Springs. There will be seatings at 9 and 11:30 a.m. During the event, children of all ages will be able to meet beloved princesses, princes, fairies and other fairy-tale characters. Attendees are encouraged to dress up as princesses and princes for the event. The ticket price includes a meet-and-greet with all the characters, food and beverages, dancing and face painting by professional makeup artists, as well as photo and autograph opportunities. There will also be a chance to win prizes that have been donated by local businesses. Both boys and girls are invited to attend. “New this year is a court jester, who is a stand-up comedian,” noted Judy Elliott, marketing director for SALT Performing Arts. “We also made a point have more princes this year.” Guests will be greeted by the Fairy Godmother, and they will go into the theater and help themselves to food, which will include bagels, Chick-fil-A chicken nuggets, mini doughnuts, cookies, fruit, coffee and water. “Then, one by one, the princesses and princes will be introduced by a master of ceremonies,” Elliott explained. “He is also a magician and will be doing magic tricks.” She said that several of the costumed characters appeared as leads in recent SALT shows in past seasons. “It will be more of a sing-along this year with some popular songs,” she pointed out, noting that there will also be dancing to pop music. “All the royals have fabulous

Elliott said that the event was well-attended last year and that parents and grandparents enjoyed spending time with their children and grandchildren during the special event. “Last year, it was a blast. There are so many opportunities to take photos. It was a cuteness explosion,” Elliott recalled. “Some of the cutest things were the dads dancing with their daughters, who were all dressed up.” “At the end, we have a giveaway with some nice items like a free week of camp at SALT and tickets to shows with gift cards to Limoncello (Ristorante),” she added. All attendees will also take home a party favor. Members of the SALT community have volunteered to plan and host the event. All proceeds from the fundraiser will benefit SALT Performing Arts, a nonprofit organization that provides live community theater productions, summer and yearlong theater camps for children, dinner theater events and more. The Brandywine Health Foundation joined the W.C. Atkinson Memorial Community Center, which sponsored and hosted more than 25 faith institutions, nonprofit organizations, and donors at the 25th annual Greater Philadelphia Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service in Coatesville on Jan. 20. The event, which was the vision of Minnie McNeil and her husband, was realized on Jan. 20 when more than 115 volunteers and 15 veterans came together from all walks of life to dedicate their time to not only celebrate the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. but also to participate in a community cleanup project that targeted Seventh through Ninth avenues on Chestnut and Diamond streets as well as Lumbar and Merchant streets north of Chestnut Street. McNeil’s goal embraces environmental stewardship that is generated by the community. It is rooted in the values of community health, safety, aesthetics, and pride. The Day of Service began with assembling more than 100 backpacks for homeless men. Through donations, volunteers filled backpacks with toiletries, socks, notepads, pens, and washcloths. Each backpack also contained a handwritten personal
note card with words of encouragement and inspiration. Atkinson Center and City Gate residents received the backpacks as a token of kindness. The event also included outside components. Volunteers and residents transported and cleaned unwanted debris like old mattresses, tires, and furniture and hauled these items and other trash into dumpsters. Participants’ tasks also included cutting down low-hanging branches, street sweeping, and cleanup. The Hutchinson Memorial UAME church served as refuge from the cold, offering the volunteers warm beverages and snacks provided by the Chester County Food Bank. McNeil and her volunteers will carry out service projects again in the spring of 2020. The effort will focus on neighborhood and Palmer Park cleanup and planting of flowers.
