Playing “Base Ball” The Way It Used To Be

The Brandywine Base Ball Club, which is dedicated to preserving the history of baseball as it was played (and spelled) in 1864, is currently seeking players for its upcoming season, as well as spectators who are invited to attend games free of charge. The team, which formed in 2013, is celebrating its 10th year of competing with other vintage clubs locally at its home field in West Chester, throughout Pennsylvania and in other states.

Vintage baseball has unique rules. Players do not wear gloves, and only one baseball is used during the entire game. The games have only one umpire, and all pitching is underhand.

“We play with people of all ages and different abilities and backgrounds. Barehand is an equalizer,”

said Rick Stratton, the team’s marketing manager. “There are people who have never played competitive baseball and they end up doing quite well.”

He explained that teams follow the rules and customs established in 1864 by dressing in historically similar attire and using period-appropriate equipment, including handmade wooden bats and hand-stitched balls made exclusively for vintage play, which are slightly bigger and softer than a modern baseball. Team members do wear cleats, but all modern-day logos are covered with black tape.

“We sometimes do play other versions of the game as the rules (of baseball) progressed,” Stratton said. “There is a version of the game that uses 1865 rules. That’s when things started to switch. You can no longer catch the ball on one bounce; you had to catch it

on the fly, but still barehanded. We (do this) to teach spectators the evolution of the game.”

Which version of baseball is being played is discussed in advance with the opposing team. “Last year, when we traveled to Rhode Island, we played a game with 1880 rules,” Stratton shared. “The pitching was overhand. Only the catcher wore a glove, but everyone else was barehand and you had to catch balls on the fly.”

Team players are asked to pay a fee to participate and are asked to buy their own uniforms. “Club dues help pay for field use; equipment, including bats, balls and bases; and insurance,” noted Stratton.

Home matches are played at East Goshen Park, 1661 Paoli Pike, West Chester. Games are played on an

The Brain Behind Chester County News And Information

If something is happening in Chester County, Becky Brain, the public information officer, knows about it. And it is her responsibility to share it with the news media and the public, along with a host of other responsibilities. Brain recently shared information about what her job entails with the Community Courier. townlively: What are some of your job duties?

Brain: Those familiar with “government” titles might know that the public information office is really the communications office. So, as public information officer for Chester County government, I oversee all communications and media-related matters, including the county’s website, social media pages and the county’s weekly newsletter. I write - a lot - whether it’s press releases, newsletter stories, proclamations, letters of commendation and citations or information for the county commissioners’ speaking engagements.

Boot Up for Winter

townlively: What is a typical day like?

Brain: On a typical day, I - along with my team - answer questions from reporters or set up interviews with the commissioners and county personnel. I write press releases, arrange press conferences and special events, prepare proclamations and citations and prepare presentations for the commissioners’ public meetings. I also respond to questions asked by county residents via email or phone calls.

townlively: What would people be surprised to learn about your job?

Brain: That this “government” job is exciting, varied and never dull! Chester County government includes Emergency Services/the 9-1-1 Center, the Health Department, Human Service programs, County Parks + Preservation, Planning, Water Resources and Conservation, libraries, Voter Services and even Chester County’s Archive and Records Services. So one day I can be writing about foster care and adoptions or programs in the county’s parks, and the next day I can be answering questions on the county’s elections, writing about affordable housing projects or even organizing events like the Chester County Color 5K.

townlively: How long have you been in this job, and do you work at home or in an office?

Brain: I have been working in a communications role with Chester County for 16 years and have been public information officer for nine of those years. Before the pandemic, I could access my work desktop from home, so the technology needed to work from home during COVID-19 was already in place. My role is currently hybrid.

townlively: What is your favorite part of the job?

Brain: It is difficult to pinpoint a favorite, but an aspect of the job that I really enjoy is the partnerships developed that help to expand and improve the county’s services to residents and businesses. This includes partnerships with nonprofits, chambers of commerce, schools, municipalities, the first responder community and agencies like the Chester County Economic Development Council and the Conference and Visitors Bureau.

townlively: What do you do in your spare time?

Brain: I enjoy cooking, spending time with family, game nights and book clubs with friends. And I love to travel - throughout the U.S. or abroad and to (my family’s) former home in the UK.

For The Love Of Parents

A radio station that I tune into recently asked its listeners, “What lies or exaggerations did your parents tell you when you were a child in order to encourage or discourage certain behaviors?”

One of the most common answers was when parents told us, “Don’t make a funny face because if you do, your face will get stuck that way.” Another popular one was “If you swallow a watermelon seed (or any seed from a fruit), a tree will grow inside your stomach.” Then there was “Don’t touch a frog or toad or you will get warts” and “If you sit too close to the TV, it will ruin your eyes.”

We believed it when our parents told us that brown cows made chocolate milk, that moms have eyes in the back of their heads and that cracking your knuckles meant you would get arthritis.

Not all “lies” were negative, however. For example, when we were scared during a thunder storm, my mom would always tell us that it was God and the angels bowling in heaven. And if

you listen closely, it really does sound that way.

Plus, to spare our feelings when a beloved pet dies, parents may tell children that a cat or dog ran away or is living happily on a nearby farm where he can run and play.

My parents also warned us about bad behaviors such as wishing bad things to happen to others or telling lies. For example, if we wished our teacher would get a bad cold so we could get out of taking a test, we, in fact, would be the ones getting the cold.

Yes, parenting does sometimes involve exaggerations, but there are other life lessons that parents teach us. At my childhood home, my parents taught us to respect nature and the Earth. My mom said that it is our responsibility to feed God’s creatures, so we had multiple bird feeders and often fed feral cats.

We learned about personal re -

try to gain as much knowledge as possible. This meant reading books and magazines and newspapers to keep apprised of current events. It meant attending events like local community theater, concerts and even the ballet.

While it is not an original thought, my mom used to say that people judge you by the company you keep, which means you should surround yourself with like-minded people and always be a good friend.

Today, I am trying to make my parents proud by following the ideals they taught me. I have not forgotten any of the lessons, exaggerated or not. I never make funny faces, eat watermelon seeds, sit too close to the TV or crack my knuckles, and I have never touched a frog. And, every summer, I can’t wait for a thunderstorm, so I can listen to God bowling with the angels.

open expanse of grass in the park. Canvas bags or sacks filled with rubber chips are used for bases.

For the upcoming season, the group will also play games in other states, including Cornish, Maine. Practices will begin in March, and the opening game will be held on Saturday, April 1, in Bethlehem.

Stratton said that players - including himself - have enjoyed being part of the team for the past 10 years. “We love it so much; we can’t get away from it,” he said.

For more information, including the complete schedule of games, visit www.brandywinebbc.org or www.facebook.com/BrandywineBBC. Prospective players may send a message to the team on Facebook or email brandywinebbc@gmail.com.

Players dress in period attire, use homemade wooden bats and play the game of “base ball” without wearing gloves.
