rogramming for people of all ages is being offered in March by park rangers at Chester County parks. Among the events on the calendar, sponsored by Chester County Parks and Preservation, are nature walks, hikes, disc golf and maple sugaring programs. Chester County’s parks include Hibernia County Park, 1 Park Road, Coatesville; Springton Manor Farm, 860 Springton Road, Glenmoore; Warwick County Park, 191 County Park Road, Pottstown; and Wolf’s Hollow Park, 1399 Schoff Road, Atglen. For more information or to register for any of the upcoming events, visit www.chesco.org/ parkprograms.

A Night Hike will be held at Warwick on Saturday, March 5, from 6 to 7 p.m. The hike, suitable for people age 10 and over, will be a 2-mile trek on the Horseshoe Trail, where participants will listen for owl calls. Attendees should bring a flashlight. Hibernia will hold a disc golf weekend on Saturday and Sunday, March 5 and 6, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The nine-hole course, designed by the park rangers, is moderately challenging, making it suitable for groups or individuals with at least some disc golf experience. Participants should bring their own discs, although some will be available to borrow. Maple sugaring programs will take

place at Wolf’s Hollow on March 5 from 2 to 4 p.m. and at Warwick on Saturday, March 12, from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 4 to 6 p.m. Attendees will learn how a maple tree is tapped and how the sap is boiled to make real maple syrup. A Hidden Trails Hike will take place at Hibernia on March 6 from 1 to 3 p.m. The 3-mile hike will cover some of the old trails that are no longer on the map. The outing is open to those able to take part in a more vigorous hike. “Ranger Techs: Springtime on the Farm” will be presented at Springton Manor Farm on March 12 from 10 a.m. to noon. The program, open to schoolage children, will focus on the transition of the seasons from winter to spring.

The program will include a 1-mile hike. In addition to those already mentioned, other county parks include Nottingham, Exton and Black Rock Sanctuary in Phoenixville. Parks are open every day, except Christmas Day, from 8 a.m. to sunset. The county is also home to three trails ideal for hiking - the Chester Valley Trail, the Schuylkill River Trail and the Struble Trail. To view an interactive map of the trails, as well as all the county’s publicly accessible trails and nature preserves, visit www.chesco planning.org/transportation/TrailPlanning.cfm and look under “New! - Chester County Trailfinder.”

LMS To Stage “Seussical” “Seussical” BY FRANCINE FULTON

Guidas-Sidorick. “We were able to keep our theater family together.”

“There are so many shows out there, but they have heavy content. This is light and colorful and focuses on celebrating the importance of every individual,” said Karen Guidas-Sidorick, Lionville Middle School (LMS) Musical Theater drama director of this year’s spring show, “Seussical.” Elaborating on why she and music director Stephanie Reimers chose the musical, Guidas-Sidorick said, “We thought it was a beautiful story.”

She said that the pandemic has added some challenges to staging this year’s show. “For the first month of the rehearsals, COVID surged again, and we were navigating a large number of absences in January because of five-day quarantines,” explained Guidas-Sidorick. “The other thing is this year, because we did not have our formal show last year, we don’t have any veteran ... eighth-graders.”

“Seussical” will be staged at LMS, 550 W. Uwchlan Ave., Exton, on Friday and Saturday, March 11 at 12, at 7 p.m. There will also be a Sunday matinee on March 13 at 2 p.m.

However, she added, high school students return each year to LMS to help with the production. “What’s awesome about our little family is we have high-schoolers who come to do their graduation project with us, and they come back … long after their graduation projects are done,” said Guidas-Sidorick. “The high-schoolers want to be here. They are here because this is their home.”

“Seussical” is based on the well-known characters of Dr. Seuss, including Horton the Elephant, who discovers a speck of dust that contains tiny people called the Whos. Horton must protect that Whos and take care of an egg abandoned by Gertrude McFuzz. Themes of the play include friendship, loyalty, family and community. “This is the full-length Broadway production. We do not do a junior edition,” noted Guidas-Sidorick. Guidas-Sidorick pointed out that the scheduled musical at LMS in 2020 “High School Musical on Stage!” - was The cast of “Seussical” includes (back, from left) Kasyap Tumuluri as the canceled the day before opening night, Cat in the Hat, Locke Starling as Horton the Elephant, Christian when all in-person learning was shut Giancaterino as JoJo, (front) Rory Garry as Thing 1 and Shruti Venkatesan down in March. “That show just went as Thing 2. away; we didn’t break down the set until September,” she said. “When we were Zoom, where they learned about theater cleared to go back in, the eighth-graders and Broadway actors and practiced improv. Guidas-Sidorick encourages the community to attend an upcoming performance. “They put on a show that rivals other age groups, and hopefully the community will enjoy it,” she stated. “We have fun, and we are a team. There is a huge sense of pride when they (perform).” Tickets to “Seussical” will be sold at the door. Tickets are also available to purchase in advance at www.dasd.org/LMS.

For The Love Of Words is a charcuterie board, which in my day was called a meat and cheese tray. Where we live has some bearing on how we pronounce and use common words. Philadelphians usually root for the “Iggles,” say Jersey instead of New Jersey and use “yo” as a greeting. And, like the Southern expression “y’all,” locals will say “youse guys.” Pennsylvania also has some unique names for its towns and landmarks, which people not from the area have great difficulty in pronouncing, like the Schuylkill River, Bala Cynwyd, Manayunk and Conshohocken. In Chester County, there is Caln, Uwchlan, Knauertown, Pocopson and Tredyffrin. Fictional businesses on TV use words to create

Words can be unique, funny or intriuging, but can also be used to comfort a friend, to offer praise to a child or loved one or to provide encouragement to our friends and co-workers. And, like the quote by Canadian writer Robin Sharma says, “Words can inspire and words can destroy. Choose yours well.”

Those of us who write for a living, including journalists, advertising copywriters, lyricists and technical writers, all share a love of words and how they are used to convey an idea or an emotion. We love the way words are put together and we cringe when they are used incorrectly. Most writers are also avid readers. We read everything in an effort to perfect our craft, including books, newspapers, magazines and advertisements, as well cereal boxes and the the news scroll at the bottom of the TV. And, while many enjoy reading news online or e-books, most of us like to hold the reading materials in our hands! Many writers, myself included, love quotes. We buy books

of quotes and those quoteof-the-day calendars. What is amazing about quotes is that one sentence or phrase that someone has said or written can be thought-provoking and inspiring. There are too many famous quotes to list, but Shakespeare has many of them, such as “All that glitters is not gold.” Another one of the most quotable authors is Ralph Waldo Emerson, who said, “Life is a journey, not a destination.” Many people, whether they are writers or not, can name their favorite words. My favorite words have a lot to do with the French language and food. Some of my favorite words include hors d’oeuvres, which are appetizers, and accoutrements, which are elements of a side dish. One French cooking term that has recently become popular
