Men age 60 and over who enjoy playing softball and are not quite ready to give up the game are invited to join the Brandywine Valley Senior Softball Association (BVSSA), which is currently enrolling players for the 2019 spring and summer season. BVSSA is registered with the Amateur Softball Association (ASA), and eligible players may turn age 60 anytime during 2019. The men’s slow-pitch softball teams follow the rules of senior softball, which means that bunting and stealing bases are not permitted. Other safety measures have also been put into place, according to BVSSA commissioner
John Lundell. “We have a double first base. There is an inside bag and an outside bag. The runner goes to the outside bag so that he does not collide with the first baseman,” explained Lundell. “We also have a double home plate. When you run down the third-base line, the second home plate is off to the right, so there is no interference with the catcher.” Lundell noted that players in the league come from the tri-state area, which includes Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware. “Players come from Delaware County; Berks County, including Reading; and from Chester County, including the West Chester area, Downingtown, Coatesville and Honey Brook,” he said.
Players range in age from 60 to their 90s. “There are guys this year who will turn 89 and are still playing,” Lundell noted. “Our oldest player was 96.” New players must attend one of the two skill analysis sessions, which will be held on Thursday and Friday, March 28 and 29, from noon to 2 p.m. at United Sports Complex, 1426 Marshallton Thorndale Road, Downingtown. “Basically, we have a guy go out and we hit ground balls to him, and we see how he runs, catches and fields the ball. That will determine which division he competes in,” Lundell said. “The gold division is more competitive. They are really good players who do especially well for their age. Winter weather can be relentless and make it challenging to stay warm and dry. After a session of shoveling snow or braving the great outdoors, people may crave a meal that can quickly warm the core - especially if that meal can serve double-duty by evoking feelings of a warm climate. Popular throughout the Caribbean, this recipe for Fish and Sweet Potato Soup from “The Complete Mexican, South American, & Caribbean Cookbook” (Metro Books) by Jane Milton, Jenni Fleetwood, and Marina Filippelli matches the subtle sweetness of sweet potato and the stronger infusion of flavors from fish and

Rummage Sale from pg 1 By Francine Fulton
Clothing for people of all ages, furniture, books, toys, tools, artwork, jewelry, household items, baby gear, collectibles and more, will be featured at a rummage sale being planned by St. Peter’s Preschool on Saturday, March 9, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. The annual event will take place at St. Peter’s Church in the Great Valley, 2475 St. Peter’s Road, Malvern. Only cash and checks will be accepted at the sale. In addition to the historic church, the church property includes the parish house, where the preschool is located, and the huge bank barn, which is where the sale will take place. All items at the sale will be provided by parish members and the community. “Everything is donated,” said Leigh Pavoni, St. Peter’s Preschool director. “Every
dollar that we make will go to the preschool. We have a play-based school that has been around for 30 years.” The community may donate items for the rummage sale beginning on Sunday, March 3, from 11:15 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. after the Sunday service. Donations will also be accepted on Monday, March 4, through Friday, March 8, from 9 to 11 a.m. and from 1 to 3 p.m. “We can accept anything Goodwill or Purple Heart can accept. So, no mattresses, no large appliances, no large exercise equipment, no old TVs or computer monitors and no cribs,” Pavoni said. “We will sort, label and price all week as people continue to bring stuff, and, obviously, pricing will be low. We plan on having at least 20 tables.” She said the sale, which began in 2012, is back this year after a one-year break. “The church parishioners love the sale. They love being able to help the
preschool,” Pavoni remarked. “We have parents who volunteer and our retired grandfathers’ group at the church, who will help set up the tables. We have great relationship with the church.” Unsold rummage sale items will be taken to GreenDrop in Frazer, and old bedding will be donated to local animal rescues. St. Peter’s Preschool, which is open weekdays during the school year from 9 to 11:45 a.m., offers programs for children age 2 and a half up to prekindergartners. Prekindergarten students must be age 4 by the kindergarten cutoff date of their home school districts. Pavoni explained that the class for children who are 2 and a half meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays, with a 3-year-old class on Mondays to Thursdays and prekindergarten on Mondays through Fridays. Also offered are an optional enrichment program and Lunch Bunch.
Classes include playtime, music and movement, library and chapel. The school’s motto is “Children First.” “Most of our teachers have been here for 15 to 26 years. That’s why kids go to our school,” Pavoni noted. “The teachers are amazing.” For more information about the preschool, readers may call 610-644-2261, visit www.preschool.stpetersgv.org or www.facebook.com/stpeters preschoolgv. More information about the sale is available by visiting www.facebook.com/ stpetersgv and choosing “Events.” St. Peter’s is located off Church Road, between Yellow Springs Road (near Cedar Hollow Inn) and Swedesford Road. Reasons To Visit Local Libraries Libraries are filled with books for adults and children. But libraries have even more to offer than books, making them an invaluable resource for the entire community. The following are just a handful of the many great reasons to visit one’s local library. For one, reading may help improve longterm mental health. A 2001 study from researchers at Case Western Reserve
University found that patients with Alzheimer’s disease were less active in early and middle adulthood in regard to intellectual, passive and physical activities than people who did not have the disease. Young adults and middle-aged men and women who visit their local libraries and check out a good book might decrease their risk for cognitive decline later in life.
Also, reading can improve a person’s vocabulary, even as he or she gets older. Reading for pleasure as a child has long been linked to helping young people age 16 and under develop strong reading and math skills. But a recent study from researchers at the University of London that examined how the vocabularies of more than 9,400 people developed
between the ages of 16 and 42 found that vocabulary continued to improve long after teenage years. By continuing to read books from their local libraries into adulthood, adults can further develop their vocabularies. In addition, libraries provide free entertainment. Libraries are home to thousands of books, but that is not all people can find
at their local branch. Newspapers, magazines, CDs and DVDs are some examples of the forms of entertainment available at local libraries. Better yet, such entertainment is free to card holders. Finally, libraries offer age-appropriate programs for children. Parents are urged to visit their local libraries, which are often home to many programs that can inspire
children to read and foster their creativity. The scope of child-friendly programs at local libraries may range from sing-along sessions for toddlers to group art programs for preschool-age children to STEM-based programs for elementary and secondary school students. The local library is an invaluable resource than can benefit people of all ages.

DMVA Offers Assistance To Veterans Knitting Group benefits, programs and services available to veterans. Veterans, family members and people who work with veterans can sign up at www.register.dmva.pa.gov. Veterans and their dependents should never pay for help to apply for veterans’ benefits. There are about 200 veterans service officers in Pennsylvania who work with organizations such as the DMVA, county Veterans Affairs offices and several veterans service organizations. They are experienced, trained professionals who provide veterans with advice and assistance at no cost.

All stitchers - no matter their age, whether they prefer to knit or crochet or whether they have many years of experience or none - are welcome at the Parkesburg Library’s weekly knitting group, nicknamed “Knit This - Purl That.” Held every Thursday from 6:30 to 8 p.m., the gathering offers a way for a beginner to learn how to knit and for a more experienced needleworker to gain inspiration for new projects. Last year, the Parkesburg Library was looking for new community activities to add to its programming. “(The library’s event coordinator) Kathleen Hood gave us a list of things we might want to try to start in our library. I thought maybe a knitting club would be something people would enjoy coming to,” library staff member Sandy McLaughlin explained. “She started it.” McLaughlin and fellow staff member Cheryl Johnson now attend the weekly club meetings at the library. Attendance varies, with young knitters participating more during the summer months when they have fewer school commitments. “One little girl did finger crochet. She sat here and had a scarf done before anybody could blink,” McLaughlin said. “Another lady brought two of her girls; they knitted on looms. They still come, but not as regularly as they had before school started.” Adult beginners are also welcome. “I think it’s important we let people know everybody is welcome, all ages,” McLaughlin said. “You don’t have to know how to knit or crochet; we will teach you,” Johnson added. The women believe that learning how to knit or crochet is often easier in person than it would be by reading directions or watching videos. “If they watch what we are doing, we can guide them hands-on,” Johnson said. Since attendees are working among friends in a casual atmosphere, they can find help when they try something new, or they may even find help in untangling knotted balls of yarn. “We’re a friendly group. We like to laugh a lot,” McLaughlin said. “It makes you feel good to
know somebody’s there to help you or maybe ‘ooh and ah.’” “I enjoy the women’s company and all the laughs we have,” Johnson said. Participants should bring their own yarn and needles. For those who have a project they are working on, the club offers an opportunity to continue the pattern among good company. Projects done by club members have ranged from simple scarves to a complex cable-knit hooded sweater-vest. For those who are ready to start a new project, the club has a few suggestions. “We’ve been making lap robes for the veterans’ hospital,” McLaughlin said, adding that attendees are also making lap robes and shawls for patients at a local dialysis center, since the procedure frequently makes them feel cold. The interest in knitting seems to be growing. “A lot of people are picking it up,” McLaughlin said. “(You can experience) everything you read about knitting - it’s good for your health. It calms you. It’s something people have found that helps them with stress.” The library’s knitting group adds a social aspect as well. “It gets me out at night, and we do have fun,” McLaughlin said. “You meet new friends (and) you meet new people. It helps a lot in a lot of different ways.” Parkesburg Library is located at 105 West St., Parkesburg. Anyone interested in the knitting group may sign up at the library, register at www.parkesburglibrary.org or simply drop in on a meeting night. For more information or to check for any cancellations due to severe weather, readers may call the Parkesburg Library at 610-857-5165. 9/11 Survivor To Address ROFM Banquet By Ann Mead Ash
Joel Jakubowski, who became director at Revelations of Freedom Ministries (ROFM) in July 2018, had a personal stake in the choice of Stanley Praimnath as a speaker for the seventh annual ROFM banquet, to be held at Shady Maple Banquet Center, 129 Toddy Drive, East Earl, on Thursday, March 21. Doors will open at
5:30 p.m., and dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m. Jakubowski met Praimnath in 2003, when Jakubowski had been a student in Teen Challenge for about five months. “I was trying to figure out who God is,” said Jakubowski, who said that he came to the program as an argumentative atheist. When Praimnath spoke at a Teen Challenge chapel gathering, Jakubowski and

his fellow students were riveted by Praimnath’s tale of surviving the 9/11 World Trade Center attack. “When Stanley came and started to tell his story, you could hear a pin drop,” said Jakubowski. “He told his heroic and faithful (account of escaping) out of the offices that the plane actually hit.” Following the chapel meeting, Jakubowski introduced himself to Praimnath and shared his own story. “I said, ‘If your faith got you through (9/11), it can get me through Teen Challenge,’” said Jakubowski. “He said (that) I was absolutely right,” shared Jakubowski. “He said, ‘Stay the course.’” The pair stayed in touch over the years, and when Jakubowski was considering speakers, he contacted his friend. “I called Stanley without a lot of notice,” said Jakubowski. “I said, ‘The Lord put you on my heart (for this event). Are you available?’” Praimnath
Stanley Praimnath responded that he would make it work. “He is such a humble guy,” said Jakubowski. Praimnath was evacuated from his 81st-floor office in the South Tower of the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001, when Flight 11
struck the North Tower. When told by security that the South Tower was secured, he returned to his office in time to see United Airlines Flight 175 heading for his window. “He will vividly remind everyone of what we experienced as a nation and our resiliency,” said Jakubowski, who added that Prainmath will also expound on how God was his source of survival and rescue. ROFM is a faith-based, Christcentered discipleship program for men who struggle with addictions. Jakubowski said that some of ROFM’s current students will give their testimonies at the banquet, and students will perform a song or two. When Jakubowski joined ROFM in July 2018, the ministry was in the process of making a change by preparing to move to a former bank call center at 113 Rancks Church Road, Blue Ball. The location is currently in the process of being remodeled for the ministry. Currently, ROFM can house up to 15 men in buildings
located along Route 23 in Blue Ball. The new building will be able to accommodate 50 men, and although ROFM may eventually house that many clients, it is not the initial goal of the move. Jakubowski will give an update on the status of the move, noting that ROFM hopes to have occupancy by March and to open a thrift store by late spring or early summer. The change will mean ROFM will need more volunteers, especially to help run the thrift store. “We are looking for volunteers for the thrift store (and to serve as) drivers, teachers, and mentors,” said Jakubowski. There is no charge to attend the banquet, but individuals who are asked to register to attend by Thursday, March 14, by calling 717-351-5680 or 717-673-2119 or emailing joel@rofm.org. Table sponsorships for the banquet are available for businesses or individuals. A freewill offering will be received. Readers who would like more information about ROFM may visit www.rofm.org.

For the second consecutive year, people with special needs were invited to take part in the Night to Shine prom-style event hosted by Freedom Life Church at the Shady Maple Banquet Facility in East Earl. At the event on Feb. 8, there were 65 honored guests in attendance, along with approximately 85 parents and caregivers. Nearly 200 volunteers from Freedom Life Church and the surrounding community made the event possible through planning, organizing and volunteering throughout the evening. Guests who entered the promlike event were greeted by church volunteers and were presented with a corsage or boutonniere. Then, they had their photo taken with an assigned buddy who
stayed with them through the evening. After walking the red carpet while being cheered on by the crowd and the friendly “paparazzi,” attendees received a crown from the reigning Miss Solanco, Noelle Schneider. All attendees then enjoyed dinner and the opportunity to dance to music provided by a disc jockey. Other activities included karaoke and limousine rides. Night to Shine, an event for people with developmental disabilities, is sponsored annually by the Tim Tebow Foundation. Tebow attends various Night to Shine events throughout the world as a surprise to attendees. This year, he visited events in Ecuador and Mexico, among others. During a video message that was shown at the start of the festivities, Tebow said that the Night

It is my honor right now to crown every single one of you as king and queen of the prom,” Tebow stated in the video. Greeting guests at the local Night to Shine event was Stacey McNutt, event chair, and Freedom Life Church lead pastor Sam Masteller, who also provided a prayer before the meal. “This is a night of celebration. We pray that every single one of our guests feels honored and loved and cared for,” he stated. “We celebrate with people all over the country and in all parts of the world.” Angie Dearolf, the church’s communications director, noted that in preparation for the event, guests were invited to choose free gowns, suits, shoes and accessories offered during a boutique day held at Freedom Life in Christiana. Female attendees were also invited to attend the prom early to receive complimentary hair and makeup services, as well as
manicures. There was also a shoe shine station for the young men. “It’s an incredible honor for us to offer this opportunity to the community,” said Dearolf. “Our teams absolutely love this event and meeting so many wonderful people.” At the end of the evening, the guests received a gift bag, which included a framed photograph of them with their buddies Freedom Life Church’s central office is located at 447 Noble Road, Christiana. Church groups meet for Sunday worship at Octorara High School, 228 Highland Road, Atglen; Rainbow Elementary School, 1113 W. Lincoln Highway, Coatesville; and Providence Elementary School, 137 Truce Road, New Providence. There is also a church in Milesburg, Centre County. Steve Sorensen By Ann Mead Ash
Jim Hertzler, chair of the committee of Ephrata- and Akronarea churches that are planning the group’s 15th annual sportsmen’s banquet, reached back into his own hunting history when discussing the topic of this year’s event. “(Speaker Steve Sorensen) will talk about hunting boots on the ground,” said Hertzler. “Not (hunting deer) from tree stands, but walking and stalking.” Hertzler noted that he has hunted deer from both locations. “I enjoy hunting from tree stands, but I didn’t always,” he said. “I used to walk and go slow and keep my eyes open, and it’s a different approach to deer hunting.” Last year, due to the demand for tickets, the event was expanded to two nights, and that format will be in place this year as well. The family-friendly banquet will be held on Thursday and Friday, March 7 and 8, at Yoder’s Restaurant, 14 Tower Road, New Holland. Doors will open at 5 p.m., and a family-style dinner including chicken and ham balls will be served at 6:15 p.m. Each dinner will include a number of door prizes. Sorensen spoke previously at a banquet sponsored by the group, and Hertzler remembered him well. “Steve is a very practical guy,” said Hertzler, who recalled that the speaker had previously discussed hunting moose in Alaska on a budget. This year, Sorensen will present “The Path to Your Next Mature Whitetail,” drawing on his work for magazines that focus on deer hunting. Sorensen will discuss hunters who bring home especially large bucks and utilize a special test to help audience members discover the locations of the biggest whitetails. Sorensen is an award-winning outdoor writer whose column,
“The Everyday Hunter,” appears in a number of western Pennsylvania newspapers. He is also a popular speaker who presents programs on wild turkey hunting and eastern coyote hunting, among others. Sorensen is also a believer in Christ, which is one reason he was chosen to speak at the event. “Our goal is to introduce people to Jesus Christ through their interest in the outdoors,” noted Hertzler, who added that Sorensen will end his talk with his personal testimony. According to Hertzler, about 14 vendors will be on hand with displays when the doors open. Most of the vendors represent local businesses that sell hunting and fishing equipment. One taxidermist will be on hand, and one vendor who sells jewelry will take part. “There are women who come to the meal, and (the jewelry) is something for them (to see),” said Hertzler, who added that husbands who attend sometimes purchase a piece of jewelry for their wives. The banquet is known for the door prizes that are given away during the meal. This year, Hertzler said that about 15 door prizes have been gathered for each event. Door prizes, which are donated by local businesses, will be designated for junior hunters ages 8 to 16 or as elite prizes, which may be won by anyone in attendance. Elite prizes generally include rifles, muzzleloaders, and bows. About a dozen Ephrata and Akron churches are involved in organizing the event. A limited number of tickets are available for each evening. Tickets may be purchased for a per-person fee by calling 717-733-2797. Organizers request that tickets be purchased by Friday, March 1.
