Rescued Canine Now Comforts Others As A Therapy Dog By Francine Fulton

Collegium Charter School,

A year and a half ago, Rose, a Labradoodle, was struck by a car and left on the side of the road. Today, thanks to the efforts of several good Samaritans and Lucky Dawg Animal Rescue, Rose has a new life bringing comfort to others as a certified therapy dog. Although Rose has completely recovered from the accident, she lost one of her legs, which the veterinarians were unable to save due to nerve damage. However, according to her owner, Jackie Gallagher, being a tripod has not affected Rose’s spirit. “We all knew after meeting her for the first time that she would be a therapy dog sometime in the future,” Gallagher said. “She is happy 24/7. She is never in a grumpy mood, and she loves everyone. Two days after her surgery she was racing across the yard. She runs like the

wind. She is just an amazing dog, and everyone realized she was special.” Rose was injured on Labor Day weekend in 2018. She was found by a passerby who then brought her to a nearby groomer. “She was found by a girl that saved her life - her first angel,” Gallagher said. “She was laying in a cornfield off Route 10 in Cochranville,” explained Lucky Dawg board member Sharon Gilsky. “A person who was driving down Route 10 saw her. They stopped and took her to a groomer, and someone who worked in the groomer’s office Christen Pulaski - took her home. She contacted Lucky Dawg to see if we could help in any way. She called us, and we went to her house to see. At that time, (Rose) wasn’t putting any weight on her leg, and she had some scrapes, bumps and bruises.” On Sept. 6, 2018, Rose was taken in See Rescued Canine pg 5

After recovering from being hit by a car and losing one of her legs, Rose, shown with her owner, Jackie Gallagher (left), and Sharon Gilsky, a board member at Lucky Dawg Animal Rescue, has become a certified therapy dog.

Rose, a three-legged certified therapy dog, visits patients at Chester County Hospital and the Coatesville Veterans Affairs Medical Center, as well as residents of Freedom Village. She is also part of the Tail Waggin Tutors program at Coatesville Public Library.

LMS Students To Present Glen Moore UMC Welcomes “High School Musical On Stage!” Youth Ministries Director By Francine Fulton

By Francine Fulton

Lionville Middle School (LMS) Musical Theater will present Disney’s “High School Musical on Stage!” on Friday, March 13, at 7 p.m. and on Saturday, March 14, at 2 and 7 p.m. There will also be a Sunday matinee on March 15 at 2 p.m. The shows will take place at LMS, 550 W. Uwchlan Ave., Exton. Disney “High School Musical on Stage!” is based on the 2006 Disney Channel original television movie “High School Musical.” The show tells the story of Troy Bolton, the star athlete at a smalltown high school, and Gabriella Montez, the new smart nerdy girl at school, who fall for each other See LMS pg 2

Lionville Middle School Musical Theater will present “High School Musical on Stage!” on March 13 through 15. Cast members include (from left) Sam Robertson as Ryan Evans, Lorelei Miller as Sharpay Evans, Julia Judkins as Gabriella Montez and Jack Dungan as Troy Bolton.

Glen Moore United Methodist Church (GUMC) recently welcomed Shawn Thomas Trego as its new youth ministries director. Trego, a lifelong member of the congregation, is now leading the church’s weekly youth group meetings, which are held on Sundays from 4 to 6 p.m. Trego was active in the church youth group for eight years and was also a member of Boy Scout Troop 79, which is sponsored by the church. He served as an assistant chaplain for the troop. Trego believes that his membership in the church, the youth group and the Scouts has prepared him for his new position as a leader of young people. “I couldn’t possibly think of a better opportunity to give back to my church and my community,” Trego stated. LMS from pg 1 during a holiday karaoke party. When they return to campus, Troy and Gabriella decide to audition for the upcoming school musical. However, the school’s current leading lady, Sharpay Evans, tries to sabotage their chances. Troy and Gabriella must make it to the auditions while also keeping their commitments to the basketball team and the academic decathlon, respectively. Themes of the play include friendship, first love and acceptance. “Most of the students are familiar with the show, having grown up listening (to the music) and watching the movie,” explained

Stephanie Reimers, music director. “Interestingly enough, our students were born in 2006, which is the year when ‘High School Musical’ was released. They have been able to explore a few new characters through the stage production, including the school (disc jockey and) announcer character known as Jack Scott, who brings a fantastic flow to the storyline in the stage production.” Karen Guidas-Sidorick, drama director, explained that the LMS spring musical is selected by the production staff. “The production staff (provides) input on which direction our theater should explore next, but importantly, we try to give students exposure to various styles of musical theater,” she said.

Both Guidas-Sidorick and Reimers believe that the most challenging part of the musical theater process is staging a show that includes a large cast. “We create with a focused commitment to have all students on stage, and with a cast and crew that exceeds 80, often trying to fit the large numbers of the ensemble can be a challenge,” said Guidas-Sidorick. “This production is for the students; we always say, ‘It’s their show,’ and so sometimes the decisions we make are artistically driven, and sometimes a decision for our show is just simply what features our large cast in the best light possible.” The show, produced by parent volunteers Chris and Amy Downing, features many upbeat musical

numbers. “As a parent, I knew some of the songs from the movie, such as ‘We’re All In This Together’ and ‘Get’cha Head in the Game,’” said Amy. “Now that I’ve been at a few rehearsals and have heard the cast sing, I find myself singing ‘Wildcat Cheer’ and ‘Stick to the Status Quo’ in my head. It’s a fun show, and I wouldn’t be surprised if the audience starts to sing along during the show.” Amy noted that the show is a collaborative effort between the production staff, parents and the cast and crew. “As parent producers, Chris and I are volunteers helping with the logistics and behind-the-scenes support of the show; the main work is being done by the amazing staff - Stephanie

Reimers, Karen Guidas-Sidorick, Shauna Brown and Jessica Clark, among countless others,” Amy stated, adding that a number of parent volunteers are assisting with many aspects of the production, from building and painting sets to providing donations for the cast party. “But the hardest jobs are being done by the cast and crew,” she

shared. “In just watching the rehearsals, it’s hard to believe that these students are in seventh and eighth grade; they are that amazing.” Tickets will be sold at the door. Tickets are also available to purchase in advance at www.dasd.org/LMS or on Facebook by searching for “Lionville Middle School Musical Theater.”

Center Stage Slates Verdi Gala Center Stage Opera will present its March Verdi Gala at several locations. Tickets will be discounted for students. Only cash and checks will be accepted as payment. The gala will take place at Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church, 1610 Carlisle Road, Camp Hill, at 7 p.m. on Friday, March 13, and at 4 p.m. on Sunday, March 15. On Sunday,

March 22, the production will take place at 4 p.m. at Covenant Moravian Church, 901 Cape Horn Road, York. It will also be held at Rosemont Presby’s Inspired Life Community, 404 Cheswick Road, Bryn Mawr, on Saturday, March 28, at 2 p.m. For more information, readers may visit www.csopera.org or contact 717-774-4352 or information@csopera.org.

They also listen to young readers at Coatesville Public Library as part of the Tail Waggin Tutors program. Their next library visits will be on Saturdays, March 7 and April 18, beginning at 10:30 a.m. In April, Gallagher will bring Rose to visit with children at the Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children in Delaware. Gilsky noted that children at duPont who may be facing surgery or the loss of a limb may be comforted by visiting with Rose. “(They will see that) this dog who has had an amputation is the happiest and best dog ever,” she said. Lucky Dawg Animal Rescue is a nonprofit, no-kill, all-volunteer organization. by Gallagher as a foster at the request of Gilsky and Mary Bauer, founder of Lucky Dawg. Every attempt was made to contact Rose’s owner, but no one came forward. “We fostered her for about a month before she had the amputation,” Gallagher explained. “I started training her in March of 2019. We went through Level I, Level II and Canine Good Citizen. It took nine months before we completed the schooling that she needed. In December 2019, we took the Therapy Dog International Test.” Gallagher noted that Lucky Dawg helped finance the cost of the classes. Gallagher eventually went from fostering Rose to adopting her. Together, the pair now visit patients at Chester County Hospital and the Coatesville Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center, as well as residents of Freedom Village at Brandywine, a senior living community.

watching a movie. The youth group members also participate in outings. Last month, they visited an escape room in West Chester. “My goal is to have an outing once a month,” Trego stated. During the activities, Trego receives assistance from other adults, including his girlfriend, Paige Keyser, and his mother, Mary Trego. The group is open to all youths in the community from grades six to 12, whether or not they attend GUMC or any other church. “It’s a huge community outreach,” said Trego. “A lot of them go to Faith Alliance Church, and some of them don’t go to church. It’s a way to reach them through God.” Trego said his goal is to provide a consistent program of activities for youths in the area. “I feel that a crucial aspect of growing a youth group is consistency and dependability. Youths should look forward to a regular weekly meeting,” he stated. “I’d like to incorporate as much prayer, Scripture and devotions as possible into fun-filled activities for the group.” GUMC is located at 1920 Creek Road (Route 282), Glenmoore. For more information about the youth group, readers may contact the church at glenmooreum@verizon.net or 610-942-2324. More information about the church is available at www.glenmooreumc.org

Trego explained that after he turned 18, he asked the church if he could lead the group. “After the last youth group disbanded because the leader went into the military, the youth group was devastated,” he said. “Almost a year went by, and when I turned 18, I approached the church and said I would be willing to lead it.” Trego is a 2019 graduate of Downingtown High School East and is currently attending Montgomery County Community College in Pottstown to study business administration. While a member Boy Scout Troop 79, Trego earned his Eagle Scout Award by constructing and installing a new church sign in June 2019. The sign, which features the church name engraved in a composite material, is surrounded by a border of rocks. The stones around the border are from the pile of stones left over from when the church was built in 1873. Trego describes the youth group meetings as casual. “They come in and I start with a game because the kids are so highenergy,” he explained. “After we calm down a little bit, there is a Bible lesson and we have a great discussion.” This is followed by an activity. “Last week we made casseroles to donate to the church’s outreach program, which provides casseroles to City Gate (Rescue Mission),” Trego said. SALT Performing Arts and Acting Antics will present “The Lion King KIDS” on March 6 through 8 at the SALT theater in Chester Springs. The play features a cast and crew with all abilities. A show that combines the talents of a cast and crew with all abilities will be featured when SALT Performing Arts and Acting Antics present “The Lion King KIDS” on Friday, March 6, through Sunday, March 8, at the SALT theater, located in the West Pikeland Township Building, 1645 Art School Road, Chester Springs. The show is part of ENCORE, a weekend of performances from the Acting Antics Musical Theatre Master Class produced by SALT Performing Arts. SALT merged with Acting Antics in November 2018. In March 2019, the two groups presented “The Granny Awards,” which was the first show staged after the merger. Acting Antics was founded in January 2007 by Cindy Schneider as a way to provide unique opportunities for children, teenagers and adults who have difficulty with social skills or have a diagnosis on the autism spectrum. Prior to the merger, Acting Antics was searching for a performance space. “Last year’s production of ‘The Granny Awards’ was truly one of the most rewarding moments in the life of SALT,” said Lauren McComas, SALT’s founder, artistic director and president. “I can’t tell you the amount of joy we felt seeing that cast of beautiful people feeling comfortable and

confident in who they are on our stage.” “The merging of our two organizations could not have gone any smoother,” Schneider added. “Last year, Acting Antics needed a home, and the resulting union with SALT provided not only a home but a warm, caring and respectful relationship that goes way beyond putting on a show.” “The Lion King KIDS” will be performed at SALT on March 6 at 7 p.m. as a full dress rehearsal for parents and families. On Saturday, March 7, at 7 p.m., there will be a gala fundraiser performance, which will include a silent auction, hors d’oeuvres and more. A matinee open to the public will be offered on March 8 at 2 p.m. Proceeds from ticket sales will help fund Acting Antics and SALT as they continue to expand programming. All performances offer reserved seating. Tickets can be purchased at www.saltpa.com/ thelionkingkids. OPENING March 2nd!

St. Matthew ’s Lutheran Church and St. Matthew ’s Preschool and Kindergarten will hold their spring consignment sale on Saturday, March 14, from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the church, 2440 Conestoga Road (Route 401), Chester Springs. A 50-percent-off sale will start at 11 a.m. Cash, checks and credit cards will be accepted for payment at the sale. Items available will include gently used games, puzzles and toys, as well as outdoor play toys, ride-ons, bicycles, CDs, DVDs, Blu-rays, books, baby equipment, strollers and more. “We will have over 100 consignors for this sale,” said Sandy Elkins, preschool director. She noted that the sale will be held indoors, although larger toy items may be placed outdoors, weather permitting. Clothing will be sorted by size and gender for newborns through size 16/juniors. “We will have spring- and summer-related clothing and accessories, including shorts, light jackets, spring dresses and Easter outfits for boys and girls,” said Elkins. Also offered will be accessories, sporting goods and footwear, including cleats, sneakers, dress shoes, sandals, rain boots and slippers. All items not sold at the sale that consignors want to donate will be given to local nonprofit organizations. Unsold toys, sporting goods, bathing suits, dance items, home decor items and electronics will be given to the Military Order of the Purple Heart, with proceeds to benefit the National Federation of the Blind. “This group coordinates programs, services, resources and opportunities for blind children and adults across the nation,” Elkins noted. Leftover children’s clothing, small toys, infant’s items and school supplies will be donated to Cradles to Crayons, a Philadelphia-based nonprofit organization that provides supplies to children through age 12 who are homeless or are members of low-income families. Consignors will donate a portion of their sales to the school

at St. Matthew’s. Proceeds will support curricular materials for the students; special events for students, such as field trips and guest speakers; the music program; and upkeep and maintenance of the school. St. Matthew’s Preschool and Kindergarten offers a variety of programs for preschoolers age 2 and up and kindergartners. Preschool classes are held weekdays from 9 to 11:30 a.m. and from 12:30 to 3 p.m. A Lunch Bunch, held from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., allows preschoolers to eat lunch together, take part in free play and go outside for exercise. Kindergarten at St. Matthew’s runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on weekdays. Students at St. Matthew’s also take part in community service projects. In the past, they have supported the Ronald McDonald House and they have collected hats, gloves, scarves and socks that were distributed to homeless individuals in Philadelphia. They also participate in Pennies for a Purpose to benefit the American Cancer Society, and kindergarten students have baked and sold homemade dog biscuits, with proceeds going to the Brandywine Valley SPCA. “We held a diaper drive and food drive in February for the Chester County Food Bank,” Elkins noted. For more details about the upcoming consignment sale or the school, readers may call 610-458-3381, visit www.stmatthews-school.org or search for “St. Matthew ’s Preschool & Kindergarten” on Facebook. More information about the sale is available at www.facebook.com/stmatthews schoolsale. The church and school are located on Route 401, approximately 1 mile east of Route 100. Tours of the school are available by appointment.

SALT, Acting Antics To Present “The Lion King KIDS”

The Pennsylvania Department of Banking and Securities (DoBS) recently announced Investing in Women, an initiative aimed at providing women with important information about banking, credit, saving and investing, while offering practical resources to navigate their finances. The number of Pennsylvania women saving for retirement or investing is lower than the national average. Through strategic partnerships, the goal of Investing in Women is to evaluate investment habits, stereotypes and obstacles for women and reduce the gender gap through education, awareness, and research. By

presenting fundamental concepts about the importance of financial capability and the unique financial challenges facing women, women in Pennsylvania, stakeholders, and partners are encouraged to get involved. Investing in Women will have three important elements. The elements are financial education presentations across the state on common financial challenges for women including credit, investing, and saving for retirement; a studying of the financial capability of women to hear directly about the tools, resources, and skills they need to better prepare for any financial situation; and a

financial capability forum in May to bring together experts from the financial field to share what individuals can do to take control of their finances. Investing in Women will highlight strategies that address barriers women face to more confidently manage their finances. Women are more likely to take time away from work to raise children or to be the caregiver of other family members. This means fewer years with income to put into a retirement savings plan. The department’s Investor Education and Consumer Outreach is part of the governor’s Consumer Financial Protection

Initiative. The staff works with state and local government agencies, service providers, community and trade organizations, the General Assembly, the military community, schools, and other partners to help Pennsylvanians become well-informed about the financial marketplace. Anyone can ask questions or file complaints about financial transactions, companies, or services online, or they may call 800-PA-BANKS (800-600-0007). Readers may learn more about fraud and scam prevention by following DoBS on Facebook or Twitter and with hashtag #GovWolfCFPI or subscribe to the department newsletter.

Area Churches To Host Lenten Services Community members are invited to attend Wednesday evening Lenten services that are being presented by the Coventry/Warwick Ministerium. As part of the program, which began on Feb. 26, area churches are taking turns hosting worship with a different preacher every week. A Good Friday service will complete the schedule. Each service will begin at 7 p.m. and will include Scripture readings, seasonal hymns, responsive prayers and time for reflection. Light refreshments will be served following the service. People may attend one evening, a few services or all the evenings as a way to make Lent more meaningful. Lent is a Christian observance that starts on Ash Wednesday and lasts for 40 days, not including

Sundays, representing the 40 days Jesus spent fasting in the wilderness before His crucifixion. The 40-day period for Christians is a time to reflect, fast and give penance in preparation for the resurrection of Christ, which is celebrated on Easter Sunday, which falls on April 12 this year. The following services have been scheduled. The Rev. Rick Knarr will lead the service at Mount Carmel United Methodist Church (UMC), 2203 Harmonyville Road, Elverson, on March 4. The service on March 11 at Calvary Christian Center, 426 Laurelwood Road, Pottstown, will be led by the Rev. Keith Price. On March 18, the Rev. John Kolle will lead the service at Nantmeal UMC, 359 Nantmeal Road, See Services pg 9
