PJP II Students Make Blankets For Cancer Patients By Francine Fulton
In addition to an open house, a book fair and special activities for students and staff members, the Home and School Association at Pope John Paul II Regional Catholic Elementary School (PJP II) partnered with Cozies 4 Chemo to complete a service project during Catholic Schools Week (CSW). Students in each classroom worked together to make more than 30 blankets for Cozies 4 Chemo, which will distribute them to cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. Jen Saunders, co-president of the PJP II Home and School Association, explained that teachers and students made the blankets by cutting two large pieces of fabric and then knotting or hand-tying the two pieces together. Students used different materials to create the blankets, including some that were especially designed for children.
“Cozies 4 Chemo has instructions listed on their website along with a video tutorial,” Saunders explained. “Each classroom was given printed instructions, cutting templates, fabric, scissors, a link to the video and a fleece no-sew blanket kit we purchased from JoAnn Fabrics.” Students worked on the project throughout CSW, celebrated from Jan. 26 to 31. “Teachers set up a blanket workspace in their classrooms and had students take turns completing the blankets during the day,” shared Saunders. “All students from prekindergarten to eighth grade participated.” Saunders noted that the teachers explained to the students what the blankets were for and how they would be used. “The teachers explained that the blankets will go to help cancer patients,” said Saunders. “The blankets help provide warmth and comfort See PJP II pg 6

After a four-year absence, West Fallowfield Christian School (WFCS) is bringing back its popular potpie dinner in a new format. The dinner, set for Friday, March 20, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the school, will now be served restaurant-style, with additional servings brought upon request. The meal will include homemade chicken potpie, pepper cabbage, applesauce, a fruit cup, a roll and butter, a choice of beverage and chocolate or vanilla cake for dessert. The meal will be served by teachers, students and volunteers. “It’s all-you-can-eat. Our waiters and waitresses will bring you a refill of everything you want,” said Heather Olseski, who is organizing the event along with Heather Herr and other volunteers. “We wanted to try to get away from serving family-style. Everything will come individually portioned, and you can ask for more.” The previous version of the potpie dinner was a popular fall event held in conjunction with the school’s annual benefit auction. Over the years, the two events required so many volunteer hours in one weekend that the potpie meal was discontinued. “Doing potpie and auction on the same weekend required an army of people,” WFCS principal Robbie Martin said, explaining the reason for eliminating the potpie dinner. “The hope had always been that we would reignite it.” As time went on, people realized how much they missed the potpie dinner experience, particularly the connection it provided between the school and the community. “We miss that connection with the community, getting people to come in, meeting new people and alumni (in attendance). Our
dream is to try to get potpie back to the fall where it was before,” Olseski said. “It was a spur-of-the-moment thing to get it together (this year) to not let another year go by.” “One of the things that has come out loud and clear for us is we have to go back to go forward. We’ve kind of lost a little bit of touch with the community, and potpie really used to provide that,” Martin said. “We’d like to reignite it because we’d like to reconnect with people that we haven’t seen for a while. We really didn’t want to wait for the fall. That was too long. We thought we’d give it a kickoff in the spring, but eventually it will make its way back to the fall.” The recipe for the potpie remains the same, and so does the school’s love for its community. “West Fallowfield is looking forward to seeing faces we may not have seen in the last four years,” Martin said. “I’m looking forward to being able to talk to people and reconnect with people like this, the old way, face-to-face.” WFCS is located at 795 Fallowfield Road, Atglen. To order tickets, visit www.wfcs.org and choose the Upcoming Community Events tab. The direct link for ticket purchases https://wfcs.kindful.com/e/wfcs-pot-pie -dinner. Tickets may also be purchased by cash or check in advance at the school office. There is a limit of 250 tickets available for sale.

Commissioners Approve Board Appointments
Renny S. Sardella, O.D.
Chester County Commissioners (from left) Michelle Kichline, Marian Moskowitz and Josh Maxwell officially appointed 15 county representatives to the new Environmental and Energy Advisory Board at a recent commissioners’ meeting. Landscapes3, Chester County’s comprehensive plan, focus on preserving and protecting the environment. The comprehensive plan will guide the board in some of the county’s environmental and energy objectives. An additional task of the
Environmental and Energy Advisory Board is to review and advise on making strides toward the Sierra Club’s Ready for 100 initiative, the national movement to achieve 100% clean, renewable and just energy across the U.S. by the year 2050.
Company Selected For Business Hall Of Fame A pair of grade school buddies who went on to found Victory Brewing Company have been chosen by the Chester County Economic Development Council (CCEDC) for induction into the Chester County Business Hall of Fame. Victory Brewing co-founders Bill Covaleski and Ron Barchet will be honored at the CCEDC’s annual Business Achievement Award Dinner, which will be attended by more than 400 of the region’s top business leaders, on Wednesday, April 1, at the historic Phoenixville Foundry. The public is invited to attend,
and sponsorships are available. To register for the event, readers may visit www.eventbrite.com and search for “2020 CCEDC Business Achievement Award Dinner.” Covaleski and Barchet trace their partnership back to 1973, when they met on a school bus as fifth-graders and became friends. They remained so, even as they grew up and went to college on opposite coasts. Beer would bring them together as adults during friendly home brewing competitions that became so sophisticated, the pair decided to leave their corporate careers to study with

the best in the brewing industry. They brought that knowledge back home to Chester County to create Victory Brewing Company, which now employs more than 300 people in the state of Pennsylvania, including Downingtown, Parkesburg and Kennett Square. Victory’s expansion continues with plans to open another location at Philadelphia’s Logan Square later this year that is expected to add 100 full- and part-time jobs. Victory Brewing Company’s success is also noteworthy in the communities it serves. The company organizes volunteer efforts throughout the year, including during last year’s Brandywine River Clean-Up with the Brandywine Red Clay Alliance. Victory employees also plant crops at Pete’s Produce Farm to benefit the Chester County Food Bank, which operates the Fresh2You mobile market that brings fresh local product to underserved communities in the area. In partnership with the Lord’s Pantry of Downingtown, Victory has recently matched $3,500 in donations collected by its employees to provide gifts and gift cards for more than 30 children and their caregivers over the holidays. Gary Smith, CCEDC president and CEO, reported that the CCEDC has been supporting Victory Brewing since 1995. Through its network of location services, CCEDC was able to assist Victory Brewing with securing its flagship brewery and restaurant in Downingtown at the site of the former Pepperidge Farm. CCEDC also facilitated a business loan to assist with equipment needs. Past inductees into the Chester County Business Hall of Fame include Michael L. Pia, director of South Mill Champs (2019); Claudia P. Hellebush, former CEO of United Way of Chester County (2018); Dr. Jerry Parker, president of Delaware
County Community College (2017); W. Thomas Musser, chairman of The Tri-M Group LLC (2016); John Bogle of The Vanguard Group; Greg Bentley of Bentley Systems; Oscar Lasko of Lasko Products, Inc.; Jack Loew of J. Loew & Associates Inc.; Tom

Scottish and Irish history through guitar playing and baritone vocals. When Zahm was old enough to sing, he began learning the Celtic songs and melodies he first heard in the largely Scottish province of his mother’s birth, Ontario, Canada. Zahm, whose heritage includes Scottish and Irish blood on both sides of his family, has collected several hundred selections and now performs them up and down the Eastern Seaboard and beyond. Zahm performs regularly in a range of settings from concerts and festivals to television shows and Celtic-themed Caribbean cruises. Additionally, he is one of only a few singers in the world who have been invited to sing live twice with Scotland’s Black Watch. This will be Zahm’s seventh year appearing at St. Paul’s. A reception will follow the concert. There is a cost to attend. Children under 12 will be admitted for free.
