The Rev. John Neider, the new pastor of Glen Moore United Methodist Church (UMC), believes that a pastor should be more than the person who leads Sunday worship services. That is why when Ash Wednesday is observed each year, no matter where he is serving as pastor, Neider can be found distributing “Ashes to Go” to residents at different locations throughout the day, including at the Thorndale train station and in the borough of Downingtown. Recipients are given ashes and a blessing and are reminded of the Bible verse from Genesis that states,

“Dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.” “When I am in church, I know that I am preaching to the choir for the most part. I get it that the choir needs to have its batteries recharged on Sunday morning,” Neider remarked. “But I also believe that I need to be out in the community meeting folks.” Neider pointed out that 2019 was his fifth year distributing ashes. “I have a little A-frame sign that says, ‘Ashes to Go.’ And, I (wear) my robe so I am easily identifiable,” he said. “One of two things happen. Many of them mistake me for a (Catholic) priest, which is fine. Other people who don’t get ashes say, ‘Can you pray for me?’ and that is a See Pastor pg 5

There is still time to register for the Brandywine YMCA’s Girls on the Run (GOTR) and STRIDE programs, which are 12-week physical fitness and educational sessions that culminate in the completion of a 5K run/walk. The programs were scheduled to begin on March 11, and registrations will be accepted until Friday, March 15. It is not necessary to be a YMCA member to participate. As part of the GOTR and STRIDE programs, youths will meet two times a week for 90 minutes at area schools through Friday, May 31, to prepare for the 5K, scheduled for Saturday, June 1. GOTR focuses on building self-esteem and promoting emotional and physical health in young girls. STRIDE, which stands for Success + Teamwork + Respect + Inspiration + Determination = Excellence in Character, was developed for boys in response to the successful GOTR program. “Girls on the Run is a national program and has been around for 23 years, 12 years in Chester County,” noted Kathryn Gute, program coordinator. “STRIDE was started at the YMCA of Greater Brandywine and has been around locally since 2010.” GOTR and STRIDE are open to students in grades three to five.

There are also middle school programs for students in grades six to eight, with Heart and Sole for girls and STRIDE TOO for boys. Among the schools participating in the programs this spring are Bradford Heights, Brandywine Wallace, Lionville, Springton Manor, West Bradford, Exton, Octorara, Kings Highway, Rainbow, Pope John Paul II and Pickering Valley elementary schools, as well as Octorara Middle School and the Marsh Creek Sixth Grade Center. The Uwchlan Hills Elementary School group will meet at the Lionville Community YMCA. Students who attend nonparticipating schools may register to participate at another school in their district where there is an opening. Those who are unable to take part in the spring programs are invited to participate in the fall sessions that will begin in September. “Most of our teams are run at the elementary schools around Chester County. We do have some teams at our Y branches, as well as a unique opportunity this season to be running a team out of the American Helicopter Museum,” explained Gute. “The meetings are lessons led by trained volunteer coaches who are following an evidence-based curriculum that incorporates running and other physical activities into the practice of lessons in the areas of building confidence,

Local youths participated in the Brandywine YMCA Girls on the Run (on front) and STRIDE (above) programs this past fall, which culminated in a 5K run/walk. Registration for the spring sessions of the programs will be accepted until March 15. character development, selfempowerment, decision making, goal setting, leadership, etc.” Gute noted that a portion of each meeting includes physical activity. “During the 90-minute sessions for GOTR and 75 minutes for STRIDE, a portion of that is spent running or walking if the child is not yet comfortable with running,” said Gute. “It is an outdoor program; however, most of the schools allow us to use some indoor space if necessary (in the case of) inclement weather.” The culminating event is the Chester County Girls on the Run 5K & YMCA STRIDE 5K Challenge. “Our spring 5K brings in about 2,500 people; most are participants of the programs and their families,” said Gute, adding, “The kids can definitely walk if they would like. Many do.”

There is a fee to participate in both programs. The fee includes the 20 evidence-based curricular lessons led by trained volunteer coaches over the course of the 12-week season, training and entry for the season-culminating 5K, a program shirt and water bottle and a 5K shirt. To register, individuals may visit www.ymcagbw.org/GOTR or www.ymcagbw.org/STRIDE. Participants may also register at any branch of the Brandywine YMCA. The program is also still in need of volunteer coaches. Individuals may visit the respective websites for more details or contact Sue Holinsky, volunteer coordinator, at 610-643-9622, ext. 2138. For more information, readers may contact Gute at 610-6439622, ext. 2133, or kgute@ ymcagbw.org.

Pennsylvania Council for the Arts Individual Fellowship Grants in 1996 and 2006. Davenny is represented in numerous collections, including the British Museum in London; the Fogg Museum, Cambridge, Mass.; the Minneapolis Institute

of Art; and the Honolulu Academy of Arts, among many others. He was represented by the Mary Ryan Gallery in New York for nearly 30 years, where he has had eight solo exhibitions. He is currently represented by Seraphin Gallery in Philadelphia.

She said that audiences can expect the familiar story, but one that will be told in a different way. “In the musical, all of the characters break the ‘fourth wall’ to narrate the story. They go in and out of being their character to address the audience,” she explained. “My vision for the show was that the gargoyles of Notre Dame - the actual statues that are part of the architecture have seen the entire history that transpired inside and outside the walls. So the gargoyles should be the storytellers.” Another difference with the SALT production will be the absence of a choir. “There is giant choir that is normally on the stage during the production, but I did away with that and the characters telling the story,” McComas said. “We will have seven gargoyles in costume and makeup. They sing the story and tell the story, and the characters will stay in character. It is definitely a different spin on how it transpires.” McComas pointed out that the author’s original intention in writing the book was to raise awareness of the Gothic architecture in Paris. “At that time in France’s history they were tearing

down religious institutions (for modern construction),” she noted. “He thought the architecture was so beautiful and worth keeping.” McComas hopes that audiences will be pleased to see SALT’s version of the play. “I hope people who love the musical are intrigued by this spin,” she said. “I’m excited because it’s a very artistic and theatrical telling of the story.” The cast includes: AJ Tantala as Quasimodo; Camryn Williams as a gypsy; Evan Albright as Father Dupin, King Louis and a soldier; Greg Kasander as Frollo; Hannah Elliott as a townsperson; Heather Kalkiewicz as a townsperson; James Wier as Jehan, Saint Aphrodisius and a gypsy; Josh Calderon as Frederic, a gypsy and a soldier; Joy Ann Wolfe as a gypsy; Kayla Friend as a gypsy; Mitch King as Phoebus; Nancy Kadwill as Madame Gypsy; Sara Helmers as Esmeralda; and Stephen Fisher as Clopin. Gargoyles will be portrayed by Alexandra Santo, Andrew Blank, Dylan Zangwill, Elliot Colahan, Mike Styer, Emily Meros and Zack Salamon. In addition to McComas, the crew includes choreographer

Quasimodo was born with a hunchback and is feared by the townspeople. He lives in the bell tower with only gargoyles to keep him company. Quasimodo, who longs to be outdoors and accepted by society, escapes for the day and joins the crowd during the Festival of Fools festivities, only to be treated cruelly by everyone except Esmeralda, a gypsy. Also interested in Esmeralda are Frollo and the handsome Captain Phoebus. As all three pursue her attention, Frollo embarks on a mission to destroy the gypsies and it is up to Quasimodo to save them and the Notre Dame Cathedral itself. The play is based on the 1996 Disney animated feature film and Victor Hugo’s 1831 novel, according to Lauren McComas, artistic director and president of SALT Performing Arts, the show’s director and producer.

Moore or Romansville,” Neider stated. “We have families and young kids; I love doing children’s sermons.” One of Neider’s goals as the new pastor at Glen Moore is to work with other churches in the community. “I believe that we should be working in concert with our brothers and sisters in the faith community,” he stated. “I have reached out to Faith Alliance and Fairview Presbyterian (churches). We are talking now about things we can do together. I get that we have different theological orientations, but there is one God.” Before becoming a pastor, Neider worked in addiction research and hospital administration for hospitals in the Midwest and later at the Chester County Hospital and University of Pennsylvania Hospital. In the

1990s, he joined the health care information technology world, working in a marketing role for a local health care company. He then retired to solely focus on being a pastor. In addition to his pastor work, Neider leads the Celebrate Recovery support group at The Well community center in Downingtown. Along with ministering locally, he has gone on mission trips to South Africa and Haiti. Neider is an Air Force veteran, having served from 1966 to 1970 in both Asia and Europe. Coincidentally, Neider noted that he provided the message at Glen Moore UMC nearly 20 years ago. “Way before Ralph (Cain, a previous pastor), I came here and preached on a Sunday. I was there to help whoever was the pastor there at that time,” he recalled. “God has a way of moving us into

places where we are needed and when we are needed.” For more information about Glen Moore UMC, located at 1920 Creek Road, Glenmoore, readers may call 610-942-2324, email glenmooreum@verizon.net or visit www.glenmooreumc.org.

and youth ministry team have been aware of for quite a while is that our traditional model of Sunday school has not been working well for our young families. Our young families need us to try a different model of faith formation,” Lynch stated. “They are also aware that there are a number of folks in our congregation, including our young family members, who are hungry for a different, more contemporary style of worship. We believe that LIFT will meet both of these needs.” Lynch also listed the potential benefits of the program. “Research consistently shows that faith formation in children happens most effectively when children are learning with and from their parents. In other words, having children and parents learning side by side works,”

she stated. Lynch said the decision to offer the new program may be risky, but that the church is required to change and adapt to the needs of the faithful. “The Christian education and youth ministry team of our congregation is courageously stepping forward in faith to lead us in a new venture, one they hope will both pass the faith on to the next generation and build the faith of adults in our community,” she said. “We’re excited to offer something new and different, and (we) hope it meets the needs of families in our church and families in our area,” Kauppila added. Prior to that, his pastoral assignments were at Hopewell UMC in Downingtown and Christ UMC in Delaware County. “In the Methodist tradition, unlike other Protestant denominations, we get assigned by our bishop,” he explained. “I actually have two churches now. I lead worship at Romansville at 9 a.m., and then I lead worship at Glen Moore at 11 a.m. I can’t be longwinded,” he said with a smile. about the Bible and worship with us,” said Erin Kauppila, director of youth music ministry and a member of the church’s Christian education committee. Kauppila said that LIFT is designed to develop and deepen faith through studying the Bible and through worship. “The curriculum that we are using is really about families being able to walk through the Bible together,” she said. “The fact that it’s (being held) in the sanctuary and that it’s intergenerational and it includes the sacrament of Communion makes it really different.” In a program summary provided to the congregation, pastor Susan Lynch explained that the decision to revamp the Sunday school program at the church has been a four-year process. “One of the things that our Christian education (committee)

and straw. This year, due to an unusually wet season, their straw crop failed, and they were forced to solicit additional donations to cover the cost of purchasing replacement straw,” explained PHA member Jennifer Yoder. “At the January meeting, the club unanimously voted to send a $1,000 donation to help, because without horses, there would be no horsemen.” PHA members and club officers presented the donation to Ryerss Farm animal welfare manager Amber Slaymaker and weekend caregiver Erin Renski on Feb. 24. During their visit, PHA members were given a tour of the farm and were able to meet many of the residents. “Reading the history of each resident that is mounted on their stalls was fascinating and heartbreaking at times,” noted Yoder. “Some are brought in by their caring owners, some are rescues and some are retired from equine careers.” Ryerss, located at 1710 Ridge Road, Pottstown, is open for visitors daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Volunteers are also needed. For more information, readers may call 610-469-0533. Those who would like to donate to the Straw Fund may visit www.ryerssfarm.org. Yoder explained that the PHA is an organization that promotes education about horses, promotes interest in the horse industry and provides educational support to members’ children in the area. It also provides financial support to local horsemen in times of emergency. For example, the membership recently donated $1,000 to a local trainer who had an injury and was not a member of the club. New members are always welcome.

Ownership of a horse is not required. “You just have to have a love of horses and a desire to help others,” Yoder remarked. She noted that club members come from throughout Chester County. “We have a member in Elverson and quite few (members) in West Grove, as well as Coatesville, Honey Brook, West Chester and Downingtown - of all different age groups,” she said, noting that members pay yearly dues. Junior memberships are available, as are associate and professional memberships. “I am an associate member. (Our) professional members include chairman Mark Powell, an equine dentist,” noted Yoder. “Our vice chair, Bill Venditta, was a ringmaster for the Devon Horse Show. Some people have farms (that offer) lessons and programs, and (other professional members are) trainers and groomers. I have a background in the horse industry and an animal science degree and have ridden my whole life.” The club’s biggest fundraisers each year are a spring and fall Paper Chase, which is a trail ride in which riders follow a marked cross-country course. “There are different levels - no jumping, low jumps and high jumps - and it is timed. Whoever comes closest to the average time are the winners,” explained Yoder. This year’s spring Paper Chase will be held on Saturday, April 13, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Plantation Field in Kennett Square. The club meets on the first Thursday of the month at 7 p.m. at Northbrook Marketplace (upstairs), 1805 Unionville Wawaset Road, West Chester. Prospective members are welcome to attend. The Pennsylvania Bar Association (PBA) presented County Bar recognition awards to the Chester County Bar Association during the 53rd annual seminar of the conference of county bar leaders in February at the Nittany Lion Inn, State College. Recognized for its bar foundation drawing and Law Explorers program, the Chester County Bar Association is one of 22 local bar associations in Pennsylvania honored this year for sponsoring projects that improve the legal profession, justice system, or community. The Chester County Bar Foundation conducts a $20,000 drawing where no more than 200 tickets are sold at a per-ticket fee. If

all tickets are sold, $10,000 is raised and one winner receives $10,000. The foundation uses the funds for grants awarded in the community each year. In partnership with the Boys Scouts of America, the association established a Law Explorers Post. Six students participated in the first two sessions that were conducted by a president judge and a senior judge. Sessions will continue in the spring to provide the students with a greater knowledge of and introduction to the legal profession as a possible career choice. For more information, readers may contact 800-932-0311 or communications@pabar.org.
