The Pennsylvania Department of Military and Veterans Affairs (DMVA) is headquartered in Lebanon County, but its ability to reach the state’s nearly 800,000 veterans and their families extends to every county across the commonwealth thanks to its two Mobile Veterans Outreach Vans. The vans allow the DMVA to provide personal, one-on-one

assistance to veterans in Pennsylvania so they can learn about and apply for the benefits they have earned thanks to their service. Staffed with accredited veterans service officers, each wheelchairaccessible van is a resource to learn about a wide range of federal, state, and county benefits available to qualified veterans and their families. Such benefits might

include connected disability compensation, pensions, VA health care benefits, burial benefits, education benefits, vocational rehabilitation, DMVA’s six longterm care facilities, and more. In 2018, the vans traveled to 107 events across the state, and DMVA staff interacted with more than 1,500 veterans. DMVA’s outreach staff coordinates each

event with county directors of veterans affairs, veteran service organizations, and local and state officials to maximize publicity and attendance. To request a van for a community event and to find out where the vans will be, readers may visit DMVA’s webpage at www.veter ans.pa.gov and select the Mobile Veterans Outreach Vans link.

“It’s going to be a great opportunity for the community and the school,” said seventh- and eighth-grade art teacher Debbie Ward. Ward brought the idea to the Parkesburg Action Committee (PAC) after seeing how well the gallery walks in West Chester are received. “We’ve been partnering with the school district on a number of things, and this is just another way that we can help promote Parkesburg and the great things going on in the school district,” PAC member Jenny Alexander said. “It’s exciting that the Parkesburg Action Committee can be branching out in this way. Our whole goal in town is to highlight the great things that happen here.” The art on display will cover a wide variety of subject matter and materials. Some pieces were created in class as part of assignments, and others were made outside class as independent efforts that were then submitted for inclusion in the show. Ward estimates that there will be 100 to 200 pieces on display. “We hope that the community will come out and see the kids’ artwork on display and see the progression of how their artwork grows; it’s amazing,” Alexander said. Octorara students in kindergarten through grade six all have art classes. As they move into junior and senior high school, art remains an option for all students who would like to include it in their schedule as electives. “I encourage every student to take some art classes at the high school,” Ward said. Holders To Speak At First Outdoor Expo David and Karin Holder, hosts of “Raised Hunting,” which has been broadcast on the Discovery and Outdoor channels, will be the speakers at the Hunting With Purpose Outdoor Expo. “The Holders have a family that they have ‘raised’ hunting,” explained Brandon Fisher, lead pastor with Keystone Church, which is sponsoring the event. “Their faith in Jesus Christ has been an important cornerstone to their family and their view of the outdoors.” The Holders will be one facet of the church’s first Outdoor Expo, scheduled to be held at the Keystone Church Worship Center, 20 Harristown Road, Paradise, on Friday, March 22. Doors to the expo will open at 6 p.m. The Holders are slated to speak at 7:30 p.m. Refreshments, as well as barbecue, will be served, and a variety of door prizes associated with hunting and other outdoor activities will be given away. The Holders, who hail from Winterset, Iowa, have two sons. David and Karin state that they are Christian outdoorsmen who use hunting as a platform to teach their family ethics and

values. Their goal is to spread their love for Jesus to their community through their love of the outdoors. Up to 10 area vendors and manufacturers of outdoor equipment will be featured at the expo. They will include those selling archery equipment suitable for hunting, deer feed suppliers, taxidermists, fishing and waterfowl guides, and those selling other outdoor gear and supplies. According to Fisher, the expo is the brainchild of church members Harold Bare and Wil Esbenshade. “(Bare and Esbenshade) have a desire to see the Gospel shared with everyone in our community,” explained Fisher, who added that the pair discussed areas where that they felt there was common ground between the church and the community. “The outdoors is one of those places,” said Fisher. “They personally have a love of the outdoors and a love of hunting and fishing, and that resonates with a lot of people they come into contact with in the community.” Fisher and Lauren Smoker, communications coordinator for the church, emphasized the inclusivity of the event. “This is

of the contest: Kenadee Carlson, a sixth-grade student at Peirce Middle School, West Chester; Allie Meyer, a seventh-grade student at St. Agnes School, West Chester; and Suhan Neema, an eighth-grade student at the Charles F. Patton Middle School, Kennett Square. Clinton introduced the students, as well as their family members, teachers and school administrators who were in attendance. She also read a biographical piece about each student. Prior to the students reading their winning essays, Clinton explained the premise of the essay contest. “Imagine you are living in 1919 while the women’s suffrage campaigns were having impact on Americans politically and socially,” she stated. “Discuss the pros and cons of this new amendment the U.S. Congress has passed.” She noted that specific criteria were taken into consideration, such as grammar, historical accuracy and bibliographical references. In her essay, Kenadee wrote a series of letters between a mother and a daughter, named

Anna Miller, who was living in Washington, D.C. The letters, which Kenadee dated from June 4, 1919, through Oct. 15, 1919, illustrate Anna’s feelings about the amendment that ranged from excitement to skepticism. “I believe that there are wondrous things to come out of the new amendment,” the one letter stated. “Imagine the possibilities.” Later, however, the letters question whether or not the women’s protests were worth all the effort. “Many see the suffragists as unpatriotic and look to them as if they were the enemy of the war,” the letter stated. “I fear becoming another victim of those opposed against our rights. There are so many amazing things to come of the amendment, but I fear there are also awful ones as well.” Allie titled her essay “The Women’s Suffrage Campaign Breaking Down Barriers: Gaining a Voice.” Her essay dictated the observations of a young girl living in 1919. Allie cited the courageous women of the era, including Elizabeth Cady

Stanton, Lucretia Mott, Lucy Stone and Susan B. Anthony. “Because of the courage and perseverance these women never failed to show, girls like myself now feel as if they, and their voice, matter,” the essay stated. “We are human beings whose voices matter and deserve to be heard.” In Suhan’s essay, she wrote a letter from a fictional person named Ruth Johnson to an old friend named Mary. In the letter, Ruth attempts to convince Mary, a nonbeliever in the amendment, that allowing women to vote is the right thing to do. “Giving

women the vote could lead to them voting in more women in office,” she wrote. “Isn’t it fair that women start representing the interest of women, just as men have represented the interests of men for so long? I know you might think me crazy, but could you imagine one day there being a female president?” Clinton presented each student with a certificate and a medal. Winners were also presented with certificates by Toni Keg from the office of Sen. Andy Dinniman and by John McNichol from the office of Sen. Tom Killion.

“They have been selected by their schools because of their contributions to both their schools and their communities,” Lawler said. “DAR chooses to recognize these students because they will become leaders of the future. These students are very bright and multitalented. I was amazed at how much they are already contributing to our society.” During the event, Robert, Lauren and Grace were given an opportunity to talk about their community service. Mary was unable to attend the ceremony. Robert spoke of his volunteer work at the Friends Association for Care and Protection of Children in West Chester. “The Friends Association is an organization dedicated to ending homelessness in the local area,” he explained. “I participate in many different ways, from preparing casseroles for the families at the shelter to volunteering at their annual Christmas party to painting the backyard fence of the property. The one activity that has influenced me the most is working with the children at the shelter.” Robert said that he tutored a student with autism who was

having difficulty at school. Currently, he is mentoring twin brothers, helping them with their studies and taking them on outings. “Basically I am a big brother to them,” he said, adding, “The Friends Association has broadened my view of the world and taught me so much, and for that, I (am) forever grateful.” Lauren spoke about her involvement with the Leo Club, which is sponsored by the Coatesville Lions Club. “Throughout the year, we run blood drives, sponsored by the American Red Cross. When each person donates, you save three lives,” she stated. “That is my favorite event to work. “ Grace noted that a “buddy” program is in the works at her school. “We just started working on a mentor program where upperclassmen will have a group of 10 freshmen and they will help them, be their friends and be their mentors,” she said. “ We will have (the program) up and running by the end of this year.” Lawler provided a brief history of the Good Citizen Award, which was established in 1934 and originally bestowed upon

only one student per state. By 1952, the award was expanded so that each high school could select one Good Citizen honoree. Each Good Citizen was presented with a certificate and a lapel pin. “The rim contains 13 stars, representing the 13 original Colonies,” Lawler explained. “The band of blue identifies our society, and there are four books on the lapel pin, titled dependability, service, leadership and patriotism. These are characteristics of a Good Citizen.” Toni Keg from Sen. Andy Dinniman’s office and John McNichol from Sen. Tom Killion’s office also presented the students with certificates. In addition to those already mentioned, other Good Citizens included the following students: Michaela Hampton, Octorara Junior-Senior High School; Miriam Saadeh, B. Reed Henderson High School; Jane Shevlin, Bayard Rustin High School; Jayna Bruno, Kennett Consolidated High School; Regan Dolinger, Oxford Area High School; Ashlyn Lauder, Unionville High School; and Sarah Guan, West Chester East High School.
