Right now, we provide emergency shelter, residential housing, and housing support services to men, women, and families in Lancaster and Chester counties. Serving men is a new ability in Lancaster County, and we are very excited about it.” Although the need for the services provided by GSS has increased, the organization has been able to keep the lives of its existing participants stable, thanks to support from the community. “Our ability to provide support and guidance during this time enabled all of our participants to remain in their housing, pay their bills, and continue life as normally as possible during such an abnormal time,” Settle said. As with other organizations, the delivery of services had to change, requiring flexibility from both the GSS team members and participants. GSS continued to provide emergency shelter and residential housing services while maintaining state-issued safety requirements and conducting cautious intakes for new clients. Community Courier Reimagined After a very challenging year, I am pleased to announce the return of your community newspaper. Like the first crocus popping forth from the still-hard ground, a fresh, new townlively has emerged from what once was the Community Courier. Unlike its predecessor, townlively will
be delivered to your mailbox monthly. I hope you enjoy the new design and layout. Though it may look different, one thing that we haven’t changed is our dedication to the community by presenting the good news of Chester County’s people, nonprofit organizations, schools, and businesses. After the long winter that I like to call 2020, I look forward to when businesses can once again greet patrons with a smile that will no longer be hidden behind a mask and kindergarten teachers greet apprehensive students with a reassuring hug on that first day.

“This is the time (people) really need support; there is a lot of anxiety,” said Donna Kueny, program director for Compeer Chester County, a nonprofit organization that pairs people living with mental health conditions with volunteer friends from the community. “There has never been a more appropriate time for staying in touch with people, letting them know someone cares about them and providing hope.”

As part of the program, Compeer volunteers are paired with individuals of the same gender and geographical area who share common interests. Prior to the pandemic, the pairs shared activities such as attending a sporting event or a movie. Currently, most clients and their volunteer friends continue to keep in touch through phone calls, email and texting. “We have not been able to do Zoom only because most of our folks don’t have computers at home,” Kueny noted.

“Everyone is still in contact. Some people are actually out doing things, and others are more comfortable talking on the phone or through text,” Kueny said. “We send out CDC guidelines all the time. We suggested they not do a lot of socialization over the holidays. We thought it would be best (for them) to say in touch virtually.” Compeer is in need of volunteers, who must take part in a phone interview, complete an application and have appropriate clearances. “Once they are cleared, we set up a date for training. Another date is set to go over some matches,” Kueny explained. “We are doing training over the phone and sending materials to the volunteers. That is all done virtually now.” Those who are waiting for a match are assigned a “Compeer caller” who calls them once a week to keep in touch. “We did not have a lot of volunteers for the first six months of the

musings The Three Words That Changed Our Lives
Soon we began to realize that we would have to adapt the way we lived our lives on a daily basis. So, what changed? We learned to use technology. Zoom, a digital platform that allows us to see and speak to one another, became our lifeline. We met with friends and family members via Zoom, and Zoom was also the way we were able to stay at home to work. We learned to educate our children virtually. Our kitchen table became both an office and a classroom. We met our neighbors. Our dogs got plenty of outings during the stay-at-home order. We walked them many, many times a day. On
We found the outdoors. When we wanted to get out of the house, we visited local outdoor sites. We went to Hopewell Lake in Elverson and Marsh Creek State Park in Eagle. We watched the French Creek as it cascaded over the rocks in

We enjoyed family time. Of course, we began to watch more TV and movies, but when we got tired of that, we broke out the board games like Scrabble, Operation and Ker Plunk! We even found an old jigsaw puzzle, which we put on the dining room table. We would work on it from time to time and enjoyed watching the picture come together.

When the governor issued the stay-at-home order in March 2020, it impacted all of our lives forever. At first, it meant we could not grab a cup of coffee and a slice of apple pie at the local diner or catch a movie. As time moved on, it meant no haircuts, no visits to the gym and no trips to the pet store to buy our dogs’ favorite treats. And even more tragically, it meant we could not visit our relatives at the nursing home or at even at the hospital.

Stay. At. Home.
our travels we talked to our neighbors outside - from a distance. Funny, how I remember all the dogs’ names, but not necessarily their owners. Agnes. Precious. Asher and Millie next door. Reilly. And Blue the Rottweiler. On warm days, Blue would sleep outdoors in the sun. He was untethered, and at first, we quickly changed our route when he was outside. But we soon learned that Blue would just lie there peacefully and watch us pass.

St. Peter’s Village in Warwick Township. We even went to Lancaster County and visited Poole Forge in Narvon to sit by the water and take photos of the covered bridge. We read books. I have always been an avid reader, but during the pandemic reading became even more important. The problem? All the libraries were closed. So, I learned about Little Free Libraries. These are book boxes created by people in the community with the motto, “Take a Book, Leave a Book.” I visited the boxes religiously during the pandemic, dropping off books and taking some back home. We went to church virtually. It is not the same as
We cleaned. I no longer have a junk drawer! Well, it’s not as bad as it used to be. I dumped the junk drawer contents, which included old birthday candles, batteries, safety pins, rubber bands, a warranty card for the dehumidifier and so much more. Now that
drawer is pretty well organized. We also cleaned closets. We boxed up clothes and toys and home décor. The boxes and bags waited for a while in the basement until, thankfully, the thrift stores opened once again. Now that life is gradually getting back to normal, we have continued to practice what we learned during the stay-at-home order. We still walk the dogs - a lot. I still use Zoom to talk to our relatives from other states and for work. We still go to church and we smile at one another through our masks. I never did tackle cleaning the basement, but I continue to read books from the Little Free Libraries. We still play games together, but not nearly as much. And the jigsaw puzzle is still on the dining room table.
Ambulance Corps Receives Donation Uwchlan Ambulance Corps (UAC) recently received a $30,000 donation from Capitol Seniors Housing (CSH). Founded in 1974, UAC serves eight townships, providing lifesaving emergency care to over 65,000 residents. UAC has five ambulances, three responder units, and paramedics and EMTs who are available to respond to emergency calls 24 hours a day. The donation will help the organization purchase life-saving equipment needed to keep up with the demands of the growing community. Kathi Cozzone, UAC’s executive director, noted that this community includes a growing senior population. UAC’s service area includes service to Arbor Terrace Exton, a senior living community offering personal and memory care, as well as a Bridges neighborhood that eases the transition from personal care to more comprehensive dementia care. The community is owned by CSH and is one of more than 40 independent living, assisted living, and memory care communities operated by The Arbor Company. For more information about UAC, visit www.station87.com.

attending church in person, of course, but seeing our pastor and hearing his message on Sundays was very comforting. One pastor told me that this option should have existed all along, so that older people or those who were at home sick that day could still participate in church. Now that churches are open with limited capacity, we are able to worship God and at least see members of our church family although there are no social events.

“We provide mobility instruction, which is basically teaching those with low vision how to travel safety and with confidence in their community,” Ament explained. “Low-vision occupational therapy is for those who may have trouble with daily living - reading, writing and lighting issues. Anything they do on a daily basis that may be difficult, we help with a solution.” A program of action is tailored to each client and services are provided free of charge through grants and community donations. “Each person gets an individualized assessment and to-
gether we create a plan based on their needs and the goals they want to accomplish,” noted Ament. Because of the pandemic, VisionCorps did close for a time in March of 2020, but it pivoted to a hybrid model, which combines virtual and in-person programming. “Some of what we are doing is critical,” Ament stated. “You can’t teach someone how to cross a street over a computer. We made sure that we had a protocol and safety procedures in place with the mindset that our clients and our employee safety was paramount. We were able to continue to provide services in person where needed.” He
said
that
the
biggest
change since the pandemic has been transitioning the support groups from in-person meetings to virtual. “We were able to add more groups because of (the virtual platform) across all five counties,” Ament stated. “Last month, we had 20 different support groups that operate virtually.” “We are social people and for a lot of our client base, isolation is a huge concern,” he added. “Through our training and education and support groups, we are trying to lessen that isolation.” For more information about VisionCorps in Chester County, call 610-738-3008 or visit www. visioncorps.net/chester-county.
