Restore Our Roots Is Downingtown’s Newest Environmental Group By Francine Fulton
Nature lovers who reside in the Downingtown area are invited to join Restore Our Roots, a new environmental group that is dedicated to beautifying local parks and promoting native planting. An official sub-committee of the Downingtown Borough Parks and Recreation Commission, Restore Our Roots formed in the fall of 2019. “I knew of a garden group in West Chester, but I asked if there was a garden group in Downingtown. I emailed the (Downingtown board), and they invited me to a meeting and asked me to start a (group) myself,” said Matthew Gisondi, who works at the Stroud Water Research Center in Avondale, a nonprofit environmental organization that monitors freshwater systems. “Right now the group (includes)
co-workers of mine and a few new people who have joined, but our group is separate from (Stroud). We wanted to do something outside of work.” With outreach as one of its major goals, group members were present at several local events in 2019, such as Boo Bash, a costume contest held by the Parks and Recreation Commission at Kerr Park. The club gave out candy, hot refreshments and seed packets to all the attendees. “We hosted our first event in early December 2019, attracting a dozen interested locals in clearing out invasive plant species in the woodlands of Kerr Park,” Gisondi reported. “The group was able to clear out an acre of Amur honeysuckle and Oriental bittersweet along Brandywine Creek.” Assisting in the project were members of the East Branch Green Crew. Next up will be a native planting and See Restore Our Roots pg 4

Fishing Licenses Available For Food Bank Continues To Serve The Community Opening Day Of Trout Season
Lakes and streams throughout Chester and Berks counties will be open for trout fishing starting on April 18. Fishing licenses and permits are now available for purchase. State Sen. Andy Dinniman, who serves on the Senate Game and Fisheries Committee, recently announced that fishing licenses and permits are
now available for purchase at www.gonefishingpa.com. All fishing licenses and permits purchased are valid for up to 13 months. See Fishing Licenses pg 2

A local health care worker is inviting youngsters who are currently not in school to brighten the lives of elderly residents who reside at Brandywine Hall, a nursing home in West Chester, by sending them messages through the mail.
“We are on lockdown at this time, which stops all visitors who are not essential workers and family members from coming into the building,” explained Liz Linder, a certified occupational therapy assistant. “(Brandywine Hall has) suspended activities, and (the residents) must stay in their rooms for See Residents pg 2

Customers have the option to choose vouchers that can be given as gifts and redeemed by recipients, if they are interested in gifting the licenses. Locally, the West Chester Fish, Game and Wildlife Association (WCFGWA) has more than 300 members who work on preserving the local environment while carrying on the fishing tradition. The WCFGWA raises more 3,000 trout in its nursery and stocks them in West Valley Creek. Chester County is home to many diverse fishing locales, such as Chambers Lake, which holds the title of Panfish Enhancement Area. This title indicates that the number, quality and size of panfish reach a significant threshold. Dinniman also warned against purchasing “third-party” licenses for fishing and hunting, as scams have appeared online offering fake, cheaper licenses and permits. He stressed that the aforementioned website was the best and safest route to purchase new licenses. According to a statement issued by the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission (PFBC) on March 16, the PFBC will operate under a consolidated statewide schedule for all counties during the 2020 trout season. Under this revised plan, a single Mentored Youth Trout Day will occur on Saturday, April 11, and a Statewide Opening Day of trout season will take place on Saturday, April 18. As a result of these changes, separate, earlier regional mentored youth and opening days will no longer occur in the 18 southeastern counties, including Berks and Chester counties. These changes, made by the PFBC under direction provided by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and the Pennsylvania Department of Health, are
intended to reduce large gatherings of people and the number of anglers traveling into the southeastern regional areas. Trout stocking will be conducted on an accelerated schedule, and volunteers will not be permitted to assist with stocking activities. To complete trout stocking operations without the assistance of the public, the PFBC will modify stocking methods for this year. In some cases, preseason and in-season allocations of trout will be combined into single stocking events to increase the efficiency of stocking trips. Moving forward this season, trout stockings will be announced upon their completion, rather than in advance on the PFBC mobile app and PFBC website. The change in stocking procedures will not result in any reduction in the approximately 3.2 million trout scheduled to be stocked statewide in 2020, and stocking will occur seven days a week until further notice. A valid Pennsylvania fishing license is required of persons age 16 and over to fish or angle for any species of fish. To reduce social contact amid health concerns, anglers and boaters will be able to display their fishing license, launch permit or boat registration renewal digitally on a phone or other mobile device as proof of possession. If approached by a Waterways Conservation Officer (WCO) in the field, the angler or boater would only have to produce the digital image of the license, permit or registration on their phone or mobile device. For more information, readers may visit the previously listed websites or www.facebook.com/ PaFishandBoat. The PFBC mobile app can be downloaded at http://bit.ly/PFBCmobileapp.

They really could use cheering up during this difficult time.” The address for Brandywine Hall is 800 W. Miner St., West Chester, PA 19382. Linder recommends that children tape the envelopes closed rather than lick them when mailing the cards and letters. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) website, www.cdc.gov, coronaviruses are generally thought to be spread from person to person through respiratory droplets. Because of poor survivability of these coronaviruses on surfaces, there is likely a very low risk of spread on packaging, the CDC said. “I have spoken to the CDC with clarification that the virus has not been transferred through mail and will not put my patients at risk,” said Linder. “Understandably, there is misinformation surrounding the virus,

and I recommend (contacting) the CDC in order to receive the clearest information possible.” Linder, who has worked at Brandywine Hall for a year and a half, came up with the idea along with nurse practitioner Clare Poisin. “We just started this (letter-writing effort) as a recommendation and have yet to see how many kids have sent letters, but I can only imagine that the community will step up in this difficult time,” Linder commented. A certain protocol will be followed before the cards and letters are distributed to residents. “We will be asking the activities (department) to hold on to the letters and follow proper precautions in order to ensure all patients are safe,” Linder said. The leadership and board of directors of Brandywine Health Foundation canceled the annual garden party, which had been scheduled for May 20, due to the concerns about the community spread of COVID-19 (coronavirus.) As a philanthropic health organization, the foundation’s primary concern is for the well-being of all individuals in the community, which demands that necessary steps be taken to limit the risk of potential exposure to and spread of the virus. Through the donation of Mr. and Mrs. Robert McNeil’s home as the event venue, the garden party engages more than 500 people in support of the Brandywine Health Foundation’s overall mission. In

The group also plans to take part in several more community events and celebrations, as well as invasive clearing events with the East Branch Green Crew and the Downingtown Tree Commission. Gisondi hopes to utilize his environmental knowledge in working with the new group. “I do a lot of land restoration work, a lot of tree planting and habitat restoration, and I have worked in research - the best way to grow a tree and maintain it,” he stated. “We also speak to interested groups and schools and other nonprofits and provide them sensor stations to track water quality. I have a lot of background in working with the public on environmental issues with a scientific approach not an activist approach.” “We are familiar with environmentalism and environmental science, and we are bringing that repertoire to our group,” he added. “We want to show people it is more than a hobby.” Gisondi said he is pleased with the support that has been offered by Downingtown Borough.

food and fresh produce, shifting from a choice pantry style to a to-go box of food just like everyone else in the country. We have implemented that, and our cupboards have been fantastic getting that out.” In addition, the CCFB has prepared emergency food for those in need. “By the end of the week (of March 20), the food bank will have 5,000 emergency food boxes and 5,000 frozen meals for use by our partner agencies,” Kitson-Davis said. “We anticipate more next week as product comes in.” “The most impactful thing anyone can do who is at home and wants to help the food bank is go to our website and donate to our general operating fund,” she added. “We are purchasing food to put into the boxes.” Kitson-Davis credits the county for its ability to handle emergency situations, including the Chester County Department of Human Services, the Department of Health and Jane Zeis with the Department of Emergency Management. The CCFB is also accepting food donations with a modified warehouse entry process. All food donations should be brought to the warehouse
entrance at the back of the building, located at 650 Pennsylvania Drive, Exton, on Mondays through Fridays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Food should not be left after hours. The CCFB has listed the most needed food donations as granola bars, fruit cups, pasta and sauce, soup, hearty canned meals, peanut butter, canned tuna/chicken, individual cereals and quick-cook rice/grain blends. These are food donations that are prepackaged and easy to prepare by people who are quarantined. Those in need of emergency food assistance should call 610873-6000, ext. 105. “The food bank is the central agency to call, and we are open and our staff is fielding phone calls,” said Kitson-Davis. The CCFB also welcomes volunteers. However, there are new precautionary measures required for all prospective volunteers. The new policy for volunteers can be viewed at www.chester countyfoodbank.org/a-note -about-volunteering-during -covid-19.
