DWHS Students To Stage “Little Shop Of Horrors” By Francine Fulton
Downingtown West High School (DWHS) will present the science-fiction comedy “Little Shop of Horrors” as its spring musical. Performances will take place in the DWHS auditorium, 445 Manor Ave., Downingtown, at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday through Saturday, March 28 to 30. A matinee performance will begin at 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 31. The story revolves around Seymour, a meek and quirky floral assistant, played by Charlie Norwood. Seymour stumbles across a new breed of man-eating
plant that he names “Audrey II” in honor of the woman he loves, played by Avery Meier. A crew member will be located inside Audrey II to operate the plant. Audiences may be familiar with the title song, as well as musical numbers such as “Feed Me,” “Somewhere That’s Green” and “Suddenly, Seymour.” The musical, featuring music by Howard Ashman and Alan Menken, was based on the 1960 film “The Little Shop of Horrors.” Another movie, based on the musical and starring Rick Moranis as Seymour, was released in 1986. Dog Rescue Seeks Foster Families, High School Seniors Win Vocal Performance Competition Offers Adoptable Pets By Francine Fulton
Founders of To Love a Canine Rescue (TLC), which is based in Chester County, believe that all rescued, stray and abandoned dogs should live in a loving foster home before they find a permanent place to live. That is why the nonprofit, all-breed, no-kill foster-based rescue is seeking local residents willing to take a dog into their homes. Veterinary care, food and supplies such as crates, bowls and toys are provided. “We look for people to love the dogs until they are adopted. It’s very fulfilling,” said April Robinson, TLC
Janson (left photo), a 4-month-old male Labrador retriever, and Jefferson (right photo), a 3-year-old male German shepherd mix, are two of the dogs currently available for adoption from To Love a Canine Rescue. The organization is currently seeking foster families, as well as people who are willing to provide a forever home for See Dog Rescue pg 2 animals currently in foster care.

Dog Rescue from pg 1 marketing and events director. Robinson noted that the organization has found homes for more than 2,900 dogs since it formed in 2013. “We are proud of that,” she stated. She said people may find it hard to release their foster dogs when permanent homes are found, but TLC tries to make that transition easier. “The cool thing about TLC is that the foster families get to meet the people who are adopting the dog. They can answer questions of the adopters, and they get to see where the dog is ending up,” Robinson explained. “You need to be in the mindset that the dog will get a great home and you can save another one because there are so many more who need to be saved.” Those who live in an apartment may also foster a dog with proof of their landlord’s permission, and foster families are not required to have a fenced-in yard. “We have different types of fosters,” said Robinson. “Overnight fosters are for dogs coming from transport. We have longterm fosters who will take a dog until it’s adopted; it could be two days, two weeks or two months. There are summer fosters for when people go on vacation. We are very flexible as far as scheduling.” For more information and to complete an application, prospective foster families may visit www.tlcrescuepa.com/foster. Those who are unable to foster a dog can volunteer in other capacities with the organization, such as helping with transports that come from other states. “We need help with meet-and-greet events, which we do every weekend, handling dogs and taxiing dogs and helping set up events,” Robinson said. The next scheduled meet-and-greet, where residents are invited to meet adoptable dogs, will be held on Sunday, March 31, from noon to 3 p.m. at Giggy See Dog Rescue pg 6

Pennsylvania Secretary of Agriculture Russell Redding was the featured speaker at the Chester Delaware County Farm Bureau’s annual spring banquet on March 14 at Octorara Junior-Senior High School in Atglen. Redding’s remarks stressed the importance of agriculture to the state, noting that it makes up 18 percent of Pennsylvania’s economy at approximately $136 billion annually. Redding also made remarks on the Farm Bureau’s Farmers Care Program, which helps with food needs across communities throughout the state. “At the end of the day, there is a human on both ends of what we do. The food system is critical to us every day,” Redding said. Another speaker was Kay Moyer of the Penn State University Extension program. Moyer works with Lyme disease awareness,
and her responsibilities include presenting at Amish schools each year in Pennsylvania and beyond. There was also a report on the Farm Bureau’s Young Ag Professionals program by Ellie Chandler. Formerly known as the Young Farmers and Ranchers, the program encourages interaction between new and longtime farmers. Events such as the banquet provide networking opportunities. Those who attended the banquet had a chance to visit the school’s agricultural education facilities. The district’s on-site career and technical programming includes greenhouses, a hydroponics lab and livestock. Greeting visitors and answering questions were FFA members from the Octorara, Hans Herr and Oxford Area High School chapters. The FFA students also collected food items and monetary gifts for the Farmers Care Program at the banquet.
Contributions will be given to local food banks. Also in attendance were Chester County winners from the Pennsylvania Farm Show along with Keystone FFA awardees. For more information on the Chester Delaware County Farm Bureau, readers may visit www.facebook.com/Chester DelawareCountyFarmBureau or www. ChesterDelawareCountyFarmBureau.com. “There are a few differences, but it is the same story as the Rick Moranis-Steve Martin movie,” explained producer Anne Davidheiser, a science instructor at DWHS. “In the early ’80s, it was an Off-Broadway musical, and it moved to Broadway in 2003, (where it starred) Hunter Foster, Sutton Foster’s brother, who was Seymour. It just
had a revival at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., and there is talk that it will come back to Broadway.” “Interestingly, it’s written by the gentlemen that did ‘Beauty and the Beast,’ ‘The Little Mermaid’ and ‘Aladdin,’” Davidheiser added. “That being said, this is a dark comedy and we’ve been advertising it as PG-13, because it could be a little scary.” Davidheiser noted that some DWHS

The Chester County commissioners, joined by Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) general manager Jeff Knueppel, recently announced details of major investments that are designed to boost public transportation, economic development and community services in the city of Coatesville. At a briefing held at the location of Coatesville’s proposed new train station, Commissioners Michelle Kichline, Kathi Cozzone, and Terence Farrell noted the many city, county and state initiatives and efforts that have come together - and are expected to continue to come together to strengthen Coatesville’s neighborhoods and its downtown. Headlining the list of the commissioners’ announcements is Chester County’s agreement with SEPTA to bring back the regional rail service to the city of Coatesville that ceased operation in 1996. The proposed new service will extend SEPTA train operations beyond the current terminus in Thorndale to a new station in Coatesville. Service will begin when construction of the new train station is completed by PennDOT. The design for the new Coatesville Train Station is well underway, and PennDOT anticipates that the station project will be completed within three years of the start of construction. The county commissioners also announced funding of $1 million in community revitalization funds for the city, to be used to kickstart the parking garage project that is part of the train station development. The commissioners also noted further commitments, including funding for
infrastructure improvements, affordable housing projects, education, training and job creation opportunities and access to community programs and services. Work on the First Avenue and Lincoln Highway intersection is just beginning through $1.7 million in Chester County Community Revitalization Program funds, and $750,000 was provided late last year by the county to purchase the new Chester County OIC offices and to make major renovations to the Coatesville Library. In March, a Coatesville Community Connections service was slated to set up shop in the Coatesville Library with a “community connector” who can help all individuals and families to find crucial services such as food, rental and utility assistance; housing; child care; jobs; transportation; health and dental programs; and CHIP information. The service is administered by the Maternal and Child Health Consortium and funded by the Chester County Department of Human Services. Pictured on front: Chester County Commissioners Terence Farrell (front, far left), Michelle Kichline (front, second from left), and Kathi Cozzone (second from right) presented a check for $1 million to Coatesville City Council and city staff to kickstart a train station parking garage. The presentation was made as SEPTA announced its plan to return regional rail service to the city. State Rep. Dan Williams (third from right) was among those present at the briefing.

Her past roles at local theaters and at school have included Reno Sweeney in “Anything Goes,” Maria in “The Sound of Music,” Mayzie LaBird in “Seussical,” Dorothy Brown in “Thoroughly Modern Millie” and Hedy LaRue in “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying.” Elana plans to attend college to study musical theater. Sue Sutter, event chair, explained that students are required to apply for the competition in advance and provide a reference from a vocal coach or high school choral teacher. On the day of the competition, students are welcome to use an accompanist provided by the choral society or bring one of their own. “They sing one compulsory piece, so everyone sings the same piece in their vocal key,” explained Sutter. “They bring one

kids have enjoyed it,” Davidheiser said. “It’s been a little something different for them to learn. We try to give them different opportunities throughout their four years in our program.” She said that this year’s play features strong vocal performances, including those by the trio called the Ronettes, who include Danielle Kucera, Krista
Devane and Elaine Sicarra. “The leads are great, and the Ronettes tell the story,” she said. “People are going to be impressed. It will be a fun night out.” For more information or tickets to “Little Shop of Horrors,” readers may visit www.westmusical.org or call the box office at 610-269-4400, ext. 7529. classical number of their choice and one musical theater piece of their choice, and they sing to a panel of three judges.” This year, the competition was adjudicated by Courtney Capriotti, Teresa Moyer and Tom Sitzler. “At the end of the auditions, our judges do the tallies and then I notify the first-place winner and two runners-up,” said Sutter, noting choral members also attend the competition to escort students to the rehearsal rooms and turn music pages, among other duties. Sophia will receive $1,000, a certificate of achievement and an award plaque. The runners-up will receive $500 each and a certificate of merit. The awards will be presented at Chester County Choral Society’s spring concert, led by Gary P. Garletts. The concert, themed “Favorite Opera Choruses,” will be held on Sunday, April 28, at 3:30 p.m. at Church of the Good Samaritan, 212 W. Lancaster Ave., Paoli. The late Honorable Charles B. Smith, sponsored the vocal competition and provided the scholarship money. “This year, we are dedicating the spring concert to Charlie Smith, our benefactor who has sponsored the scholarship since 2010,” Sutter said, noting that Smith was a baritone who sang at the Church of the Good Samaritan. “He felt that encouraging young singers was a good thing to do.” All three finalists will perform at the concert. “The runners-up will sing one (number) of their choice, and the winner will sing both of her audition pieces,” Sutter noted. Choir Concerts from pg 1 than a decade and was choir director at the Forks of the Brandywine Evangelical Presbyterian Church for 46 years. BACC has performed musical cantatas for more than 45 years in the greater Chester County area and beyond. Members consist of men and women representing various church choirs in the area, as well as those who have a love of singing. This year’s choir is made up of nearly 70 singers. Although the concerts are free and open to the public, BACC has in the past received freewill offerings for various charities. Offerings received this spring will be for the benefit of David’s Drive 831, which was created in memory of David Turner Jr., who died suddenly in 2009 at the age of 20 of a suspected heart arrhythmia. David worked at the Coatesville Veterans Affairs Medical Center and had a tremendous respect for the veterans he served, many of whom were homeless, were in early stages of recovery or came to the hospital without essential items. David’s Drive 831 is committed to improving the quality of life for hospitalized and homeless veterans and people in need in the community. More information about the charity can be found at www.davids drive831org. The “America” cantata was first performed in 2001 before the events of 9/11, and the group came together again following that tragic day for the benefit of the New York fire and rescue personnel.
Forming again in 2007, the group performed “America” for the benefit of Operation Troop Appreciation (OTA), established in 2004 by Kristen Holloway, whose parents sing with the group. At that time, through numerous performances, the group raised more than $20,000 for OTA, which provides wish list items for troops deployed around the world, as well as home essentials for returning veterans. BACC has also presented “America” for the benefit of the Travis Manion Foundation, whose namesake is a young Marine who was killed while serving America in Iraq in 2007. The foundation’s mission is to empower returning veterans and families of the fallen in character development. BACC last sang the cantata on the 10th anniversary of the events of 9/11 for the benefit of Downingtown-area fire and emergency personnel. For more information about BACC and the upcoming concerts, readers may search for “Brandywine Area Community Choir” on Facebook.

A show that combines the talents of a cast and crew with all abilities will be featured as SALT Performing Arts and Acting Antics present “The Granny Awards” on Friday, March 29, through Sunday, March 31, at the SALT theater, located in the West Pikeland Township Building, 1645 Art School Road, Chester Springs. The show is the first one being presented at SALT since the merger of Acting Antics and SALT in November 2018. Acting Antics was founded in January 2007 by Cindy Schneider as a way to provide unique opportunities for children, teenagers and adults who have difficulty with social skills or have a diagnosis on the autism spectrum. Prior to the merger, Acting Antics was searching for a performance space. “The Granny Awards” features a diverse cast and crew with and without special needs, including performers from the Musical Theatre Master Class of Acting Antics. The class started in January at SALT and is culminating with the live performances. “The Granny Awards,” a musical fairy tale, tells the story of Granny, who has retired from show business and will be honoring all of her favorite fairy tale characters, such as Best Female and Male Vocalist and Best Viliain. She will also name the
