Sharing Joy Through Flowers
BY FRANCINE FULTON
In the summer of 2018, Chester County resident Beth Adams founded Petals Please, a nonprofit organization whose volunteers would take large bouquets of flowers such as those displayed at weddings and funerals, break them down into smaller arrangements and then distribute them to local senior citizens as a way to brighten their day. In the beginning, she and a few friends gathered the flower donations themselves and completed the work to repurpose them in Adams’ garage. Since then, Petals Please has expanded its services and now has more than 100 volunteers who deliver flowers to sites such as Harrison House in Coatesville, Newport Meadows Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Christiana (formerly Harrison House), Tel Hai Retirement Community in Honey Brook and
the Pocopson Home in West Chester. Flowers are also presented to clients served by Home of the Sparrow in Exton and Meals on Wheels of Chester County. Most recently, Petals Please presented arrangements to staff members at the Crime Victims’ Center of Chester County in observance of Employee Appreciation Day. “We have gifted over 50,000 bouquets to individuals in our community,” Adams reported, noting that the flower distributions continued during the pandemic. “Because the senior care communities were so isolated during COVID, any kind of gesture of kindness was uplifting and so appreciated.”
During the pandemic, Petals Please volunteers also began delivering fresh flowers to first responders and staff members at Brandywine Hospital. “It was a small gesture, but really appreciated,” said Adams. A young Petals Please volunteer presents a flower bouquet continued on page 4 to a nursing home resident.

Cultivating Relationships With A Community Garden
Volunteers established a raised bed community garden at Grace Covenant Church in Exton.
People who do not have a gardening space at their home are invited to claim a raised bed garden at Grace Covenant Church in Exton, where a community garden has been established.
To ensure a steady supply of water for the crops, the church bought two totes to hold rainwater harvested by a customtailored gutter system. “We put gutters on a shed that an Eagle Scout built for us, and we harvest all the rainwater. We have two water totes holding about 300 gallons of water each, and we get that easily from one rain,” Palmer said.
In the spring of 2021, a group of garden-oriented people from the church formed the Exton Community Impact (ECI) group, which The 44 raised beds were filled adopted a goal of building a comwith a mix of topsoil and mushmunity garden and offering raised room soil from Mother Earth beds, free of charge, to any resiOrganic Mushrooms in West Grove. dent who wanted one. Volunteers also had to adapt their flower donation efforts during the pandemic. “Because funeral and weddings were stopped, that source of donated flowers dried up. We reached out to local farmers (in the summer) to cut clippings from their own gardens and bring them to us so we would make arrangements that way,” Adams said. “Interestingly, we found that when weddings were downsized, brides kept their big flower budgets (and) they donated their flowers. They were trying to find a way to do something good in a trying time.”
gleaned from weddings and funerals, the charity also accepts donations from high school students who attend the prom as part of its “Second Dance, Second Chance” program. “We rescue flowers,” said Adams. “The flowers that we take would likely have been discarded.” Some of the flower arrangements are placed in small vases and teacups, while a majority of them are placed in decorated cans. Volunteers, including local Girl Scout troops, decorate the cans and sometimes help with the distribu-
tion of the bouquets at the nursing homes. “(It is) incredibly uplifting not only for those who receive the flowers but the people who create the arrangements,” said Adams. “(We want to provide) something cheerful and bright for senior citizens (and others) to know someone was thinking about them.” For more information about Petals Please, visit www.petalsplease.org or www.facebook.com/ petalsplease.

Pastor Brings New Energy To GUMC BY FRANCINE FULTON If congregation members at Glen Moore United Methodist Church (GUMC) were asked to describe pastor Daniel Hepner after seeing him play the drums in the church praise band or hearing his messages some of them may have chosen words like “enthusiastic” or “energetic.” “I am so happy to be here,” said Hepner, who was appointed GUMC pastor in the summer of 2021. “My energy comes from the Holy Spirit. I love serving this church. I cannot believe that God would … bless me with an appointment like this. I owe it to the Lord and to these people to serve them as best I can.” This is Hepner’s second appointment to GUMC; he served as pastor from 2006 to 2008. Most recently, Hepner was the pastor of discipleship at Hopewell United Methodist Church (UMC) in Downingtown. “I was what they call a bi-vocational pastor. I had a secular job in the insurance industry,” he explained, noting that he retired from the business in 2021. Hepner continues to work part-time at Hopewell UMC. “It’s called a two-point charge. I run a men’s Bible study on Saturday mornings (at Hopewell), and I am liaison to men’s ministries,” he explained. “I preach only at (GUMC) on Sundays. My last sermon at Hopewell was in June of 2021.” Since his appointment, Hepner has taken on several projects, including raising funds to purchase new paraments for the church, which include altar cloths. He is also helping the church raise money for a new roof through a stewardship campaign. “This church
Daniel Hepner was appointed pastor at Glen Moore United Methodist Church. has been here almost 150 years,” he noted. GUMC offers an in-person Sunday worship service at 10 a.m. Services can also be viewed online at www. glenmooreumc.org/ weeklyservice and at www.facbook.com/ glenmooreumc. “The worship style is a combination of contemporary praise music at the beginning of worship with sing-alongs and fellowship, and then it moves into the more traditional style with hymn singing and the message,” Hepner pointed out. Outside of worship, the church supports the Honey Brook Food Pantry and the Coatesville Salvation Army and is the chartering organization for Boy Scout Troop 79. The church sponsors an annual Cookie Walk in December and a Fisherman’s Breakfast on the first day of trout season, which falls this year on Saturday, April 2. Plans are for a car show to be
held this summer. Hepner’s goals include bringing younger families into the church and reinstituting the church’s nursery program. “We have one chance to influence our children - when they see their mom and dad taking Communion and singing in worship and praying on their knees,” he said. “That’s what I want to bring back - the tradition where we are building a legacy for our children and our grandchildren.” As the pandemic winds down, Hepner hopes that people return to worship in person. “Although we have a brand-new website and (people) can listen to the service on YouTube, Jesus calls us to be in fellowship and to be together,” he said. GUMC is located at 1920 Creek Road, Glenmoore. For more information, call 610942-2324 or visit www. glenmooreumc.org or the previously mentioned Facebook page.

In her essay, Jillian examines each of the Good Citizens traits, with the conclusion that all of the qualities are necessary in a good leader. “The qualities of a Good Citizen are not independent of each other; however, they work together,” Jillian wrote. “For example, a leader cannot strengthen our nation without being dependable and reliable, participating in acts of service or simply having a sense of pride in the nation. Our nation rests on the shoulders of those who embrace and embody dependability, service, leadership and patriotism as an example for us to emulate.” The students were presented with a certificate,

The honorees have the option to apply for a scholarship at the state level. Part of the application includes completing an essay. The topic of this year’s essay was “Our American Heritage and Our Responsibly for Preserving It.” The focus question was “How do the qualities of a good citizen (dependability, service, leadership and patriotism) help support our nation?” Three of the award winners, including Jillian, were on hand to read their es-

Living An Organized Life BY FRANCINE FULTON If your spices are alphabetized, if you color code the clothes in your closet and if your car fits easily into the garage with plenty of space to spare, you are not like most of us. We are the people who struggle with organization and decluttering. We have not seen the surface of our work desk for years. We have moving boxes in the basement filled with items that need sorting. The clothes we are wearing right now came from the basket of clean, unfolded laundry - not the closet.
We buy Christmas presents months in advance and then can’t find them in December. Unlike the homes on the TV show “Hoarders,” our homes are clean and our bathrooms and kitchens are sanitized. The problem is that life often gets in the way, and we just don’t spend the necessary time to organize our cabinets, our drawers and our closets. Many of us have great intentions to finally tackle the problem areas of our homes, but frankly, there are so many other things we’d rather be doing. After watching and re-

family members can list activities or appointments. Also, everything should have its own place in your home, so you always know where to find things. Shred the papers that you don’t need. And, although it doesn’t have to do specifically with organizing, make your bed every day. I’m not sure why, but it just makes you feel better. I have found that the best time to organize and declutter is when we know that guests are coming over. When company is schedule to arrive, there is no better time to straighten up, put away clothes and coats that are on the backs of chairs, wipe down the counters, give the floors a quick mop or vacuum and put scattered paperwork into organizing baskets or containers. There is no greater motivation than knowing your in-laws are due any minute. No matter what you do to make your home more organized and clutter-free, it is best to take small steps and not try to give your home a complete overhaul. Be realistic about your goals. And someday you too will have alphabetized spice racks, color-coded closets and a garage where your car fits nicely with room to spare.

searching professional organizers, I have found that one of their best tips is to use pretty baskets or bins that you can find at the dollar store to organize small items, mail and paperwork. A silverware tray in the drawer of the bathroom cabinet is a great place to hold toothbrushes and toothpaste. Wire shelving can be used to create multiple layers of storage in the kitchen cabinets or the pantry. Most importantly, people should only keep items that they actually use. The rest can be donated to local charitable organizations or thrift stores. Will you ever use that fruit dehydrator that someone gifted you? It’s so much easier to just go out and buy a box of raisins. Will you ever make that French-inspired meal from a cookbook or make a fancy sandwich with that panini press? You can donate craft supplies for the necklace and the earrings that you will never make or the vegetable spiralizer that you will never use. Other practical tips include the following: put items away after you use them, throw away expired items from the pantry and the fridge and keep a to-do list of tasks or post a giant calendar where
solve the mystery. After publishing the book, Nicholson wanted to reconnect with Gotshall but learned that her former teacher had died about five years earlier. However, Nicholson contacted Marguerite’s husband, Elwood R. “Woody” Gotshall Jr., a Chester County resident, and gave him a copy of the book. Woody said his wife would have been very proud
of her former student’s accomplishment. Nicholson’s first children’s book was the self-published “Buster Crosses Rainbow Bridge,” released in 2020. The story, which was inspired by Nicholson’s first childhood dog, Buster, is intended to help children understand and cope with the loss of a pet. Earth Day Celebration Set The community is invited to celebrate Earth Day at Bondsville Mill Park, 1647 Bondsville Road, Downingtown, on Saturday, April 23, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event will feature the grand opening of the Bondsville Mill Park Resource Library. Both a lending and reference library, it will include more than 469 books on nature, photography and related subjects. The Chester County Beekeepers Association, which maintains three honeybee hives at the mill, will provide information to the public about the role of honeybees in
nature and agriculture. The hives will be used to demonstrate the art and science of beekeeping, including effective techniques and coping with problems and challenges. The day will also include a tree scavenger hunt and educational programs about butterflies, birds and native bees. Members of Restore Our Roots will be on hand. The group recently helped with clearing debris at the park in preparation for the building of an outdoor amphitheater.
