American Legion Celebrates 100th Anniversary By Francine Fulton

Ensuring that veterans receive their benefits, promoting patriotism and respect of the United States flag, and creating programs for youths are just some of the accomplishments of the American Legion, which is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year. The American Legion, formed by a group of World War I veterans, was chartered as a patriotic veterans organization in 1919. Locally, members of the American Legion Charles F. Moran Post 475, which meets at Freedom Village at Brandywine in Coatesville, celebrated the anniversary during the post’s monthly meeting on March 25. In addition to the regular business

meeting and luncheon, attendees enjoyed a 100th anniversary cake that was served during the event. Following opening ceremonies, which included a prayer by chaplain Andrea Crudden and a recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance, Glenn Gilbert, post commander, provided the keynote speech, titled “To Strengthen a Nation: The American Legion at 100.” In his speech, Gilbert explained that the American Legion founders had the idea for the organization while returning to the United States after serving in the American Expeditionary Forces in Paris. “They had time to think about what they would do after discharge from service in support of their wounded comrades, to honor the fallen, to See American Legion pg 7

Volunteers throughout Pennsylvania are teaming up with the American Battlefield Trust to aid in the maintenance and restoration of five Keystone State battlefields and historic sites as part of Park Day, an annual nationwide, hands-on preservation event. the Brandywine Manor House, 120 Germany Hollow Road, Honey Brook. The ticket cost will include appetizers, dinner and the opportunity to bid on silent auction items. This year’s theme is “Take Me Out to Ball Game,” and attendees are invited to wear their favorite baseball jerseys. Scott Edwards, director of operations, said this is the first time in several years that the fundraiser will include a guest speaker. Noles, who pitched for the Phillies from 1979 through 1981, is known for pitching the fastball that just missed George Brett of the Kansas City Royals during Game Four of the 1980 World Series. Many consider that moment to be a turning point in the series that spurred the Phillies to their first championship. Noles currently works with the Phillies as an employee assistance professional. “He will share his own story, and he will talk about addiction and recovery,” said Edwards, noting that Noles has had personal issues with alcohol abuse and is now in complete recovery. The event will start at 6 p.m. with appetizers and the opening of the silent auction in the barn at the Manor House. In keeping with the event theme, one of the silent auction items will be a framed New York Yankees jersey, which is signed by 10 pitchers from various teams who pitched perfect games between 1956 and 1999. A certificate of authenticity is included. Among those

i n c l u d ed on the jersey are Yankees pitchers David Wells, who pitched a perfect game on May 17, 1998, and David Cone, whose perfect game was on July 18, 1999. In addition to the jersey, auction items will include gift cards to restaurants and beauty salons, theater and museum tickets, tickets to the Reading Fightin Phils and more. At 7:15 p.m., the silent auction will close, and dinner will be served in an outdoor heated tent. Noles’ talk will follow dinner. The Peacemaker Center offers individual, couple, group and family counseling for a variety of issues such as depression, grief and loss, anger management, eating disorders and addictions. Therapy is also offered for children, for survivors of abuse and trauma and for teenagers and adolescents. Methods utilized at the center include cognitive behavioral therapy, play therapy for children and Bible-based mentoring and counseling. Other services offered by the center include executive coaching, church leadership consulting and court-ordered anger management programs. The main office of the Peacemaker Center is located at 103 Garris Road in Downingtown. Other offices are located in Kennett Square, Coatesville, Audubon, Fort Washington and Schwenksville, as well as at Community Volunteers in Medicine in West Chester. In January, a new location was added at Iron

Works Church, 312 W. Union St., center.org. More information is also available at www.face West Chester. Proceeds from the fundraiser book.com/thepeacemakercenter. will help fund the Peacemaker Center’s scholarship program to benefit clients in need. “Our mission is to help people find peace with God, themselves and others,” said Edwards, who noted that fees for counseling services are charged on a sliding scale. “We do not turn anyone away because of their inability to pay,” he said. Tickets for the fundraising dinner must be reserved in advance. Guardianship Program from pg 1

West Chester, in Suite 3300A. A continental breakfast and lunch will be provided. Diane Mulhearn, Orphans’ Court administrator, explained that as part of the legal process, the court appoints guardians for individuals who are unable to manage their financial resources or meet essential requirements for physical health and safety. “These individuals cannot make decisions about their daily lives - where they live, medical decisions, and financial decisions due to serious physical or intellectual disabilities,” Mulhearn stated. “They need an advocate to care for them because they are no longer capable of caring for themselves.” The individuals under guardianship might be someone with Alzheimer’s disease, an adult who has sustained a brain injury, or an individual with physical or intellectual disabilities who has attained the majority age of 18. A guardian can be a family member, a friend, or a representative of professional agency According to the Hon. Katherine B.L. Platt, an administrative judge with the Orphans’ Court, the volume of open guardianships makes it impossible for the Orphans’ Court judges to stay involved in each of the 750 cases that are open in the Chester County courts. This is where the volunteers come into play, serving as an extension of the court system by visiting those under guardianship. “This program is a godsend to the people we serve and to the court,” Platt stated. In addition to volunteer visitors, the court is in need of auditors who review annual financial reports, as well researchers, who create files for the volunteers that contain information about the guardian and the person under guardianship, including a doctor’s report. The file is designed to familiarize the volunteers with the person they will visit. “That is very helpful for us volunteers to have,” said volunteer James Godbold of Downingtown, who retired from a career as a statistician in the field of

It would be like none before it, nor any that would follow.” With a motto of “Still Serving America,” the American Legion adopted four principles that were established when the organization was formed: veterans affairs and rehabilitation, national security, Americanism, and children and youths. Among the Legion’s accomplishments, the organization served an important role in the creation of the U.S. Veterans Bureau in 1921, the Veterans Administration in 1930 and the Department of Veterans Affairs in 1989. The Legion also helped pass the Servicemen’s Readjustment Act of 1944, known as the GI Bill of Rights. For youths, the American Legion developed a national youth baseball program. Additionally, the organization provides aid to those who have suffered from natural disasters, such as floods and torna-

said Mulhearn. “Why this program is so successful is because it is so flexible.” Volunteers are asked to report any issues they might witness during the annual visit, which lasts between 45 minutes and an hour. Mulhearn noted that problems are not frequent because many of the guardians have made many sacrifices to care for their loved ones. “(During the visit), they can share their challenges and accomplishments and they have someone’s undivided attention,” she said. “These people have hearts of gold and have rearranged their lives and their homes to accommodate their loved ones. They are unsung heroes.” For more information about the program or to request an application for the upcoming training, readers may contact Kim Bainbridge, program coordinator, at 610344-6484 or email kbainbridge@chesco.org.

Good Samaritan Services (GSS) is a Chester County- and Lancaster County-based organization that provides emergency shelter and transitional and permanent housing for those experiencing homelessness. To honor the 10th anniversary of CEO Nate Hoffer’s leadership at Good Samaritan Services (GSS), GSS board and staff have launched a campaign to fund permanent housing rental assistance for the organization’s Bridge of Hope @ GSS program. Through the “It’s Good to Be Home!” campaign, GSS is seeking businesses, churches, schools, community groups and individuals to make donations or set up fundraising teams to help avert eviction and homelessness for single women with children in Chester and Lancaster counties. When Hoffer was appointed as leader of GSS 10 years ago, the organization had three houses and served approximately 15

men in emergency shelter and transitional housing in a year. Now, GSS serves more than 185 men, women and children every year, working across the spectrum of needs, from emergency shelter and transitional housing to long-term affordable housing and permanent housing, with additional programs like matched savings, microfinance, mentoring and job training. To find out more about the campaign, to donate or to raise funds through the crowdsourced site Everyday Hero, readers may visit www.goodsam services.org/good-to-be-home.
