Cast members of “Newsies,” this year’s spring musical at Downingtown High School East (DHSE), are particularly excited about the play because they were already huge fans of the musical. Griffen Frantz, who plays the lead role of Jack Kelly in the DHSE production, said he was familiar with the “Newsies” movie produced by Disney in 1992. It starred Bill Pullman and Robert Duvall, as well as Christian Bale as Jack Kelly. “Netflix featured the Broadway production and has been huge in promoting the show to teens,” said Griffen. “Before the show was announced, the kids had already seen both the movie and the show on Netflix several times and were in love with it.” See Meet The Cast pg 7

The seventh annual Ryerss Run for the Horses, which will include a 10K run, a 5K run and a 1-mile walk, will be held on Saturday, April 13, at Ryerss Farm, 1710 Ridge Road, Pottstown. All proceeds will benefit the retired and rescued horses that reside at the farm. Same-day registration will begin at noon; the race will start at 1 p.m., rain or shine. A light lunch will also be available at noon. The runs and walk will take participants along a cross-country course throughout the farm, through fields and around pastures. “The start times and start positions are staggered,” explained Joelle Temoyan, administrative manager at Ryerss. “The (runners) follow a trail that is marked. The 10K is basically twice around the 5K loop.” She noted that walkers will start at a slightly different location and that walkers with dogs on leashes are welcome. Temoyan said that the horses are able to watch from along the fence as the runners and walkers begin the race. “They watch when it starts and wonder what all the people are doing, but then they get bored and go back to eating hay,” said Temoyan with a smile. Spectators are also invited to attend the event to cheer on the participants and visit with Ryerss’ horses. Additionally, people have the option to sponsor a 5K or

PAACE Award from pg 1 Program Seeks Volunteers By Francine Fulton
The Chester County Opportunities Industrialization Center (OIC) recently announced that one of the program’s volunteers - Steven Kincaid - was presented with the Volunteer of the Year Award by the Pennsylvania Association for Adult Continuing Education (PAACE). Kincaid was nominated by Debbie Rikess, adult tutoring program coordinator, for his dedication and commitment to tutoring adults within the program for more than three years. According to Rikess, Kincaid, a resident of Glenmoore, has been involved in adult education for the past 15 years. He started tutoring incarcerated youths in Massachusetts, helping them to obtain their GEDs. He then worked for the YWCA Adult Literacy Center in Pottstown as a tutor for five years. “Steven has been working as a volunteer tutor for OIC since 2016. Three years ago, Steven started working with a student on adult basic literacy. In that time, the student has increased a grade level
every year,” said Rikess. “They continue to meet every week.” In addition to tutoring, Kincaid teaches two English as a Second Language (ESL) classes for the OIC. He also volunteers his time on Fridays to work with students in the Fast Trak GED program at the newly opened Coatesville OIC office. “If a student needs additional help, Steven will work with that student oneon-one to help them succeed,” said Rikess, adding, “We are very thankful for Steven’s dedication and grateful to PAACE for awarding him this welldeserved and prestigious award.” Rikess noted that Chester County OIC is always in need of volunteers willing to help individuals with their English language skills through its adult tutoring program. No experience is necessary, but volunteers must have a minimum of a bachelor’s degree. According to Rikess, there is a current waiting list of 20 people located throughout Chester County who are in need of volunteer tutors. “Most of the need is for ESL students, but we also have GED students as well,” she noted. Tutors are asked to meet with a student
Foehl-Yoshida The marriage of Jessica Ann Yoshida and Kenneth Clay Foehl took place on March 2 in San Dimas, Calif. The Rev. Shawn Varner officiated. The bride is the daughter of Kimo and Melissa Yoshida of Paso Robles, Calif. She graduated from Paso Robles High School in 2012 and is employed as a customer service representative for Kobalt Tools in Chino, Calif. The groom is the son of Henry Foehl of Glenmoore and Mary Jane Anders of West Chester. He graduated from Unionville High School in 2007 and served in the U.S. Marine Corps before studying aviation science at College of the Sequoias in Visalia, Calif. He is a pilot for Coastal Helicopters in La Verne, Calif. The maid of honor was Lillian Yoshida.
for a minimum of three hours a week for at least one year. She said that most student/tutor pairs meet twice a week for an hour and a half each time. “Most meet at libraries, but they can meet at a grocery store (restaurant area) or coffee shop; it just has to a public place,” said Rikess. Students’ skills are tested when entering the program, and they are asked what goals they have, such as earning a GED or obtaining U.S. citizenship. “All the students have different levels of need and goals,” Rikess noted. Rikess pointed out that most students have goals of improving their reading, writing and spelling, as well as speaking skills. “They need to be able to converse in English with neighbors, teachers, doctors and employers,” she said. All the information is given to the tutors before they meet the students. “We ask tutors to do training online, which is about four hours, and then they meet with their students, but they can choose a student before the training,” Rikess said. “They can choose based on student goals, meeting time and place.” She noted that some students’ cultures require females
to have a same-gender tutor. Rikess said that tutors are of various ages and come from different backgrounds, including retired folks as well as college students who are in a master’s degree program. “(Tutors can also be) students who have a bachelor’s degree and are trying to earn their teacher’s certificates,” Rikess noted. “It’s good teaching experience.” For more information about becoming a volunteer tutor, readers may contact Rikess at drikess@cc-oic.org or 610280-2618. Students at James Madison University (JMU), Harrisonburg, Va., embarked on alternative spring break (ASB) trips around the country and world this year. The students spent the week serving others while living simply and submerging themselves in the culture of their surroundings. The student-led ASB trips took place from March 4 to 11. Each trip focused on a social issue, such as homelessness, resettlement, environmentalism or community wellness, in a specific region. Erica Gratton of Chester Springs was among the students who took part. COMMUNITYCOURIER - Downingtown/Exton Edition -
Meet The Cast from pg 1 Griffen said the timing was right this year to produce the play. “Our program holds some of the most talented kids in the Downingtown area. With a show like ‘Newsies,’ there are no small parts and most actors/actresses are on stage the entire time,” he stated. “This felt like the right year for ‘Newsies’ as our cast has no weak links and this is a show that the students have been wanting to do for a while.” The play’s music was composed by Alan Menken, who is responsible for music in other Disney classics such as “The Little Mermaid,” “Beauty and the Beast” and “Aladdin,” as well as other musicals staged at DHSE, such as “Little Shop of Horrors” and “Sister Act.” “The play’s musical numbers are very intricate and have taken a lot of concentration and work from the students in order to integrate singing with
the rigorous dancing,” Griffen noted. “Our music director, Mr. Speakman, has been extremely helpful to us over the past three months making sure that we are fully prepared for opening night,” said Connor Fergus, who plays Henry. “While the music is difficult to learn with intricate harmonies and rock-like dynamics, Mr. Speakman has made us sound like singing a ‘Newsies’ song is just another day in the office.” “While none of these tunes are a classified ‘hit,’ they are outrageously catchy. I guarantee that audience members will not get ‘King of New York’ out of their heads for at least a week after seeing the show,” Griffen added. “This production thrives on big ensemble numbers with the newsies. There are a lot of students involved in this cast; the more the merrier.” In addition to learning music, the cast
Consignment Sale from pg 1 members have been stepping up their dance moves. “‘Newsies’ is a very danceheavy show,” said Joe Breslin, who plays Elmer. “One of my biggest challenges has been nailing my front flips across the stage during the song ‘Seize the Day.’ It’s a lot of pressure, but it looks awesome.” “‘Newsies’ is the first show where I’ve been as active on stage as I am,” added Srinath Govindarajula, who plays Albert. “This can become difficult when it’s time to belt out a high tenor note right after a chase scene. One of things I have had to become conscious about is making sure that I have breath control throughout each large production number, where there is a lot of action.” All the cast members agree that working on the show with one another has brought them close together, forming a theatrical family.
“As a girl, I initially was worried that I would feel insignificant in this production since it’s a guy-heavy show,” said Alison Waller, who plays Specs. “However, as a newsie, despite being a female, I still feel an overwhelming sense of brotherhood between all of the newsies.” She noted that each member of the cast brings something unique to the stage. “There is something so powerful about belting ‘Once And For All’ at the top of your lungs with all of your best friends,” she said. “The love and compassion we feel as a cast will be infectious to our audience.” “When you’re a newsie or acting like one, everyone around you is your brother,” Griffen added. “We’ve become a family through this show, and our chemistry is electric on stage. I can’t wait to put an audience in the seats.”
Ag Literacy Week Held
Hundreds of Pennsylvania farmers recently visited classrooms to read a book to young students to celebrate Ag Literacy Week, which is sponsored by the Pennsylvania Friends of Agriculture Foundation (PFAF), a charitable group supported by Pennsylvania Farm Bureau (PFB). More than 200 Farm Bureau members visited more than 1,460 classrooms and reached approximately 36,000 students in 54 counties during the third annual celebration of Pennsylvania Ag Literacy Week, held March 18 to 22. The foundation selected the book “Right This Very Minute” by Lisl H. Detlefsen, a table-to-farm book about food and farming. It was read to students in kindergarten through second grade. Students participated in an interactive game that invited them to review what they learned from the book by matching meal times on a clock to the work farmers do to produce the foods in those meals. The Pennsylvania Friends of Agriculture Foundation is an educational charitable organization supported by Pennsylvania Farm Bureau whose mission is the preservation and promotion of agriculture with an emphasis on creating educational programs for children. For more information about Ag Literacy Week, readers may visit www.pfb.com/about-ag-literacy-week.
Dauphin County farmer Marcie Graybill (back, center) led students at East Hanover Elementary School in a hands-on activity during an Ag Literacy Week event. Graybill and more than 200 other farmers visited schools in 54 counties across the state to participate in activities and read a book to students in kindergarten through second grade.
Gently used games, puzzles and toys, as well as outdoor play toys, ride-ons and bicycles, will be available, along with CDs, DVDs, Blu-rays, books, baby equipment, strollers and more. “We will have over 100 consignors for this sale,” Elkins said. She noted that the sale will be held indoors, although larger toy items may be placed outdoors, weather permitting. Clothing will be sorted by size and gender for newborns through size 16/juniors. “We will have spring- and summer-related clothing and accessories, including shorts, light jackets, spring dresses and Easter outfits for boys and girls,” said Elkins. Also offered will be accessories, sporting goods and footwear, including cleats, sneakers, dress shoes, sandals, rain boots and slippers. All items not sold at the sale that consignors want to donate will be given to local nonprofit organizations. Unsold toys, sporting goods, bathing suits, dance items, home decor items and electronics will be given to Big Brothers Big Sisters Independence Region to be sold in the organization’s thrift shops. Leftover children’s clothing, small toys, infant items and school supplies will be donated to Cradles to Crayons, a Philadelphia-based nonprofit organization that provides supplies to children through age 12 who are homeless or are members of low-income families. Infant clothing will be donated to Birthright of Pottstown. Birthright offers free, nonjudgmental help to women facing unplanned pregnancies. Consignors will donate a portion of their sales to the school at St. Matthew’s. Proceeds will support curricular materials
for the students; special events for students, such as field trips and guest speakers; the music program; and upkeep and maintenance of the school. St. Matthew’s School offers a variety of programs for preschoolers (age 2 and up) and kindergartners. Preschool classes are held weekdays from 9 to 11:30 a.m. and from 12:30 to 3 p.m. A Lunch Bunch, held from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., allows preschoolers to eat lunch together, take part in free play and go outside for exercise. Kindergarten at St. Matthew’s runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on weekdays. Students at St. Matthew’s also take part in community service projects. In the past, they have supported the Ronald McDonald House and they have collected hats, gloves, scarves and socks that were distributed to homeless individuals in Philadelphia. “We are holding a diaper drive and food drive in April for the Chester County Food Bank and Pennies for a Purpose in May for the American Cancer Society,” Elkins noted. “Kindergarten students sell homemade dog biscuits, and the money goes to the SPCA. We will also drop off food to the Lord’s Pantry as needed.” For more details about the upcoming consignment sale or the school, readers may call 610-458-3381, visit www.stmatthews-school.org or search for “St. Matthew’s Preschool & Kindergarten” on Facebook. More information about the sale is available at www.face book.com/stmatthewsschoolsale. St. Matthew’s Church and School are located on Route 401, approximately 1 mile east of Route 100. Tours of the school are available by appointment.

Ultimately, it seemed the time to choose this piece. “ Additionally, Brown noted, the chosen play, with music composed by Alan Menken, got the thumbs up from members of the school’s pit orchestra. “The pit musicians expressed interest in this show after we (staged) ‘Sister Act’ last year,” Brown stated. “With as talented as our pit musicians have become over the past years, Andrew German, our pit director, came to the production team with the

staged this past December,” Brown noted. “SALT needed princess dresses for a recent fundraiser, so we lent them our stock of dresses, and they graciously returned the favor by lending us costumes for our newsies.” He said that male and female students have been cast as newsies. “The staff had to do some historical research into the real newsies of 1899, discovering that many of them were, indeed, young girls, and these characters needed to be costumed with historical accuracy,” Brown said. In addition to the regularly scheduled shows, the performers, along with assistant director Leah Rigby, a DHSE alumna who was featured in 2008’s “Singin’ in the Rain,” are performing show previews at local retirement communities and for sixth- and eighth-graders at Downingtown schools. “When many of them are already rehearsing five days a week, it’s impressive to see them put in the extra time out of the dedication to their show,” Brown said. news that this (show) would be one that the all-student pit would like to perform.” “Newsies” is based on the historical newsboy strike of 1899 and revolves around poor and orphaned teenagers in New York City who sell newspapers for a penny a paper. They take on newspaper moguls William Randolph Hearst and Joseph Pulitzer, who are trying to take away more of the newsies’ meager profits. Their cause becomes even bigger than any of the newsies imagined when they realize they are fighting for all the children working in unfair and unsafe conditions across the country. At DHSE, the costumes were created by costume coordinator Michelle Flanagan and a student costuming team. “She also worked out a trade with SALT Performing Arts, where ‘Newsies’ was

Healing Heroes Provides Service Dogs The Healing Heroes initiative was launched by Armstrong on Veterans Day 2016 with the goal to raise enough funds to donate five service dogs to qualifying disabled veterans within communities Armstrong serves. More than two years later, enough funds have been raised to donate 11 service dogs, with six of those dogs being already paired with veterans. Four of those veterans just returned from the Guardian Angels Medical Service Dogs facility in Williston, Fla. The latest four veterans to be paired include Bryan and service dog Fahrny of Wadsworth, Ohio; Lisa and Yogi of Hamlin, W.Va.; Harvey and Rosa of Austintown, Ohio; and Samara and Angel of Scottdale. The veterans spent time
training at the Guardian Angels headquarters, where they learned how to live with their new companions. The expenses for training and pairing for each service dog are estimated at $22,000. Armstrong, along with its customers and the communities it serves, raised more than $245,000 to date, according to Sam Pietrangelo, community marketing manager and Healing Heroes Committee chair. Four veterans have recently been paired with service dogs. Amstrong is still seeking veteran applicants in Chester and York counties, as well as Harford County, Md. Money is still being raised for the Healing Heroes program. To donate or for more information, readers may visit www. ArmstrongOneWire.com/HealingHeroes.

Lodge Holds Geography Bee from pg 1 Tasting Event The Saint Anthony’s Italian Social Club hosted its inaugural tasting event on March 9 as part of the yearlong 100th anniversary celebration of the club’s inception. More than 100 people attended the event, as they sampled 12 locally made wines. The beverages were then judged by high-ranking officials of St. Anthony’s Lodge, including Sabatino Talucci, Louis Caprioti, Anthony Mascherino, Michael DiSantis, and Nick DiBerardinis. Glen Miller won first place, Marc Aliciano won second place, and Dave Scamuffa won third place. Organizers plan to make it an annual event.

contest, held on March 29 at the State Museum of Pennsylvania in Harrisburg. Michael, 14, the son of Tom and Jenn Haak of Honey Brook, explained that after he won WCA’s Geography Bee last December, he took an online qualifying test in February. About a month later, he found out that he was eligible for the state GeoBee for the second consecutive year. “We are extremely proud of Michael,” said WCA principal Susan Null. “He has been studying geography every second he could. We are proud of his consistent effort.” Michael explained that the 100 students at the state competition were fourth- through eighth-graders from throughout the state of Pennsylvania. The winner at the event, Ben Fischer, a student at Gettysburg Area Middle School, will represent his state at the National Championship, to be held in May at the National Geographic Society headquarters in Washington, D.C. “(At the state event), they took the 100 kids and divided them into five rooms and held separate bees,” Michael explained. “They asked eight rounds of questions. If you got all the questions
answered correctly, you went to the finals. There was a tiebreaker to fill the top 10 positions. I went to the tiebreaker round but did not make the top 10.” Michael noted that the question he missed asked which city in Australia had banned the use of plastic grocery bags. The answer was Perth. Other sample GeoBee questions included: Located near the Green Mountains, Montpellier is the capital of which state? Answer: Vermont. Which state is closer to the Gulf of Mexico - Virginia or Arkansas? Answer: Arkansas. Which country does not include part of the Kalahari Desert - Namibia, Botswana or Eritrea? Answer: Eritrea. “(The questions) all revolved around one topic,” noted Michael. “The first round was about the United States, (specifically) the states. One round was ‘Weird but True.’ The last round was about recycling and keeping the Earth clean.” To prepare for the state event, Michael was quizzed by WCA instructor Bill Fulbright, who was his seventhgrade geography teacher and is his

current history teacher. “I practiced most days and often tried to look over a map or atlas to find interesting things as a fun thing to do,” Michael said, adding, “A lot of things Mr. Fulbright taught us really helped us in the bees.” “Mr. Fulbright has a master’s degree in geography and passes on his love of the subject to his students,” Null added. Michael said he plans to further his interest in travel as he gets older. “I have always liked to travel. We have been to Canada, Belize, Honduras and Mexico,” he said. “When I get older, I definitely want to travel. (It’s) something I always wanted to do - travel and do (church) mission work.” He added that in addition to geography, his favorite subjects include English, history and writing. When asked about his career goal, Michael said, “I will probably do something with traveling and writing.” WCA, located at 213 Little Conestoga Road, Uwchland, in the village of Eagle, offers classes for students in kindergarten through grade eight.
