Donated blood has a limited shelf life, so supplies must be constantly replenished. Donors can make an appointment by downloading the American Red Cross Blood Donor app, visiting www.redcrossblood.org or calling 800-733-2767. To donate blood, individuals need to bring a blood donor card or driver’s license or two other forms of identification. Individuals who are age 17, weigh at least 110 pounds, and are in

generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors age 18 and younger also must meet certain height and weight requirements. Donors can also save up to 15 minutes at the blood drive by completing a RapidPass. With RapidPass, donors complete the pre-donation reading and health history questionnaire online on the day of donation from a mobile device or computer. To complete a RapidPass, follow the instructions at www. redcrossblood.org/rapidpass or use the American Red Cross Blood Donor app.

Good Works Inc., a nonprofit organization that provides free home repairs to low-income residents and families, will receive $50,000 in state grant funding. The funds, which state Sen. Carolyn Comitta helped secure through the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development’s Keystone Communities Program, will support the purchase of materials and supplies.

610-857-1676 Rt. 10, Parkesburg (2½ miles north of Rt. 30)

State Sen. Carolyn Comitta (fourth from right) and her West Chester district office staff recently participated in a volunteer day of service with Good Works Inc. Comitta also commended Good Works for its organizational resilience throughout the pandemic. Like many nonprofit organizations, Good Works experienced an increased demand for services and related challenges and impacts. Despite the emergence of COVID-19 variants, Hurricane Ida, economic uncertainty, supply shortages and rising fuel and material costs, the group completed work on 40 homes last year and assisted 165 families through 27,605 volunteer hours. A faith-based nonprofit organization, Good Works has provided home repair and rehabilitation

services to more than 1,000 homes in the region through more than three decades of service. Along the way, the group has aided seniors, veterans, disabled residents, families and others. Much of the organization’s work is contributed through volunteer service, creating an environment where neighbors help neighbors. Based in Coatesville, Good Works Inc. primarily serves homeowners in central and northern Chester County. Individuals interested in volunteering are invited to help. Something for Everyone

One friend wrote, “I remember spending most of my childhood in my nanny’s house, and she had an old Bose player/radio on one of the windowsills in the kitchen. It was surrounded by CDs from Lionel Richie, Barbra Streisand and the Bee Gees. My sister and I favored Celine Dion and would always scream/sing to reach those high notes.” Another memory shared by a friend: “My mom used to get very frustrated when we could not find something, and she said

we weren’t looking hard enough. Her go-to line was ‘Nobody broke into the house and stole it.’ My brother, sisters and I used to joke about how my mom could be scolding us and when the phone would ring, she would pick up the phone and say ‘Hello’ in the sweetest, most southern voice. (She was from Virginia.) Then she would hang up and go right back to scolding us.” And finally, “I lived with my nana in college. One Easter, my fiancé, now my husband, gave me a stuffed yellow duck in a hat and tie. I left it on my bed. I would come home from class or work, and the duck was missing. I would find him on the buffet in the dining room, at the top of the plant stand and, one time, he built a nest of scarves in the coat tree. My grandmother would always act like the duck actually did these things, and I knew she was getting a kick out of watching me hunt him, even though I was college age.” So, if you are lucky enough to still have your mother, stepmother or grandmother with you, be sure and remember her this Mother’s Day with a gift, a call or a card. For those of us who have lost our mothers and miss them every day, always remember their love and learn from their wisdom. And, if you have an errant can of tuna stuck in your shopping cart, please take it back into the store and pay for it.

STEM

continued from page 1 with a purpose,” she said. All of the academies will provide hands-on activities. In the health care-related programs, students will learn to use medical tools such as a stethoscope to listen to heart sounds, an otoscope to examine the ears and a sphygmomanometer to take blood pressures. They will also cover topics such as first aid and veterinary science. Some students will take part in a forensics scavenger hunt, where they will learn about DNA, hair samples and fingerprints. Oberholtzer noted that this is the first time that the STEM Exploration Camp is being offered for younger students. “(Previously) the youngest group was Science and Medical Discovery for ages 12 and 13, (but) we were finding that younger siblings (were also interested),” said Oberholtzer. “We decided to add the camp

because kids that age are already exploring careers and already are interested in STEM. We wanted to give them an overview of all the activities of STEM and get them excited about what they can do in that field.” The academy instructors are experienced in various STEM fields. “We reach out to contacts within our partnership who are specialists in health care, technology, manufacturing, agriculture and clean energy to lead the classes,” Oberholtzer explained. “(Participants) can see the real-world application for what they are learning in the classroom.” Class size is limited. Youths do not have to be residents of Chester County to participate. For more information and to register, visit www.steminnovationpa. org/summeracademies.
