Experience Chester County Like A Tourist BY WENDY ROYAL t’s that time of year again. Memorial Day is the unofficial start of summer, and hotels, attractions, and destinations throughout the county are getting ready to welcome visitors from around the globe. In 2019, before everything shut down, visitor spending was $46 billion in Pennsylvania. That’s a significant number, but you might wonder why you should care about what tourists spend in Pennsylvania. In addition to the more than 333,000 jobs directly supported by the travel industry, visitors generated $4.8 billion in state and local taxes. In a nutshell, that equals $950 in tax savings for every household in Pennsylvania!

I

After an abysmal year for tourism in 2020, there may be seeing some light at the end of the tunnel. Gov. Wolf’s plan to lift COVID mitigation orders on Memorial Day has people in the hospitality industry breathing a collective sigh of relief. According to Nina Kelly, director of marketing and communications for Chester County’s Conference & Visitors Bureau, things are looking up. “With the restrictions easing on Memorial Day, we are looking for more visitors and robust events throughout the summer season into the glorious fall in Chester County’s Brandywine Valley,” Kelly explained. More than ever, families are visiting nearby destinations and enjoying the benefits of a staycation. When was the last time you acted like a tourist in your own backyard? Day trips are great, but spending the night in a hotel or bed-and-breakfast will enhance your experience. You’ll find great stayand-play packages at hotels throughout the area, making your staycation in Chester County fun and affordable.

A couple’s night out at Longwood Gardens. Some popular attractions are already welcoming visitors. “Longwood Gardens remains a draw for visitors seeking the outdoor garden experience, Kelly said, “and the Festival of Fountains will run through the entire summer.” Anticipation is high for the return of events such as annual Juneteenth celebrations. Juneteenth is often referred to as Freedom Day or Jubilee Day, but regardless of what you call it, Juneteenth is the celebration of the end of slavery in the United States. On June 19, 1865, Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, to announce the end of the war and declare slavery abolished. On Saturday, June 19, the Chester County History Center will offer Underground Railroad in West Chester Walking Tours from 11 a.m. to noon and 1 to 2 p.m. The family-friendly tour

Reservations are required, and admission is by donation. outdoor music festival in August,” said Kelly. “We anticipate a pent-up demand for in-person entertainment to drive visitors from around the country to experience country music’s finest!” If people are willing to travel from across the country for Chester County’s offerings, why not schedule your summer staycation now and see what all the fuss is about?

HIGH 5K for CONNOR

Raises Needed Funds

BY FRANCINE FULTON HIGH 5 Soccer, a free program for youths with special needs offered by the Glenmoore Eagle Youth Association (GEYA), recently hosted “HIGH 5K for Connor,” featuring a 5K, a 1-mile youth run and a children’s fun run, on April 18 at Fellowship Field in Chester Springs. The event was originally scheduled to take place in 2020 but was canceled because of the pandemic. The fundraiser was for Connor Dobbyn, 12, a student at West Vincent Elementary School, who has been diagnosed with Sanfilippo syndrome Type C, also known as childhood Alzheimer’s. Sanfilippo syndrome Type C is a rare, progressive and genetic disorder that primarily affects the brain cells and spinal cord. Currently, there is no cure. Money raised at the event will go toward a clinical trial for Sanfilippo syndrome. “We raised over $31,000 for the Sanfilippo Foundation through race registrations and donations,” reported Jenn Wagner, who is the coach of HIGH 5 Soccer along with her husband, Matt Wagner. “We collected over $1,000 in donations on race day.” She said that more than 220 people took part in the event and 40 volunteers were on hand to provide assistance. Second Wind Race Timing donated its services. While the running and walking event has concluded, the community is still welcome to donate. To learn more, visit www.saveconnor.com. More information and photos from HIGH 5K for Connor can be found by searching for “GEYA Soccer HIGH 5K for Connor” on Facebook. HIGH 5 Soccer allows youths with disabilities to enjoy the game of soccer through soccer-based activities and games that are adapted to their abilities. As part of the program, players, who range in age from 5 to 18, are paired with volunteer buddies, who are predominantly local high school and middle school students. In 2020, HIGH 5 soccer sessions were held virtually, and players were invited to enjoy fun online activities via Zoom. For the spring 2021 season, play has returned to in-person activities at Fellowship Field. However, the numbers of players and buddies are limited for each session, activities have been modified and mask wearing and social distancing have been put into place. Matt and Jenn hope that HIGH 5 will resume normally in the fall.

The HIGH 5K for Connor was held to raise money for Connor Dobbyn (second from right), shown with (from left) his brother, Keenan Dobbyn; his father, Mike Dobbyn; and his mother, Marisa DiChiacchio. To learn more about the HIGH 5 program or becoming a volunteer buddy, contact Jenn at HIGH5@geyasoccer.org. More information about GEYA Soccer and HIGH 5 Soccer is available at www.geyasports.org and by searching for “GEYA Soccer & HIGH 5 Soccer” on Facebook.

Venema Leads Rotary Club In Its 100th Year

Venema, the CEO of Home of the Sparrow, which seeks to end homelessness for women and children in Chester County, is president of the Rotary Club of West Chester, which is celebrating its 100th anniversary in 2021. “I’m a long-tenured Rotarian,” said Venema, who joined the club in 1992 and was elected president for 2020-21. “Rotary was brought into the community and was led by all men. In the 1980s, women were invited to attend. The club wanted a female leader for our 100th anniversary. In addition, 2020 was the 100th anniversary of women’s suffrage, so club members thought it was fitting to elect a female club president.” Previously, the club met weekly at the West Chester Golf and Country Club. Venema said that because of “Zoom fatigue,” the club meets virtually on the first and

The club is open to members who live or work in the greater West Chester area. “I live in West Chester and work in Exton,” Venema pointed out. “Rotary is about service above self. We are looking for people of action. We are a vibrant club. We (support programs) internationally and locally in our community as well.” Those interested in joining the club must be sponsored by a member. “Rotary loses a little something over Zoom, but we are open to visitors (who can) come sit in on a meeting,” she said. Those interested in attending a virtual meeting may email info@ westchesterrotary.us to receive the Zoom link. Although the club’s annual chili cookoff was canceled in 2020 and this year’s event has been canceled as well, the club is continuing its charitable programs. “Our community philanthropic committee is currently taking applications for nonprofits that are looking for funding,” said Venema, noting that grants awarded by the organization range from $500 to $5,000 and the deadline to apply is Friday, May 28. Venema is also busy with Home of the Sparrow, which offers supportive housing services to single women and mothers who are homeless or in danger of losing their homes, as well as education and support programs. “Preventing homelessness for women and kids put us on the front lines,” she said. “Being club president and CEO of Home on the Sparrow is enjoyable, but does take a lot of time and effort. It’s been a challenging but rewarding year.”

Michelle Venema is president of the Rotary Club of West Chester, which is celebrating its 100th anniversary in 2021.

Reno Earns Girl Scout Gold Award Bianca Reno from Troop 483 in Downingtown received her Girl Scout Gold Award during a surprise ceremony in her front yard on Aug. 13, 2020. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, Reno’s final Gold Award interview with Girl Scouts of Eastern Pennsylvania was done virtually via Zoom. However, to her surprise, outside her home waiting were Downingtown Service Unit representatives MaryAnn Rodda and Pat McFarland; her troop leader, Pauli Brandt; family; friends; mentors; Girl Scouts; and neighbors who wanted to congratulate her on her accomplishment. Rodda organized the surprise ceremony. The Girl Scout Gold Award is the highest achievement award in Girl Scouting. Earning it means Reno has achieved the Trifecta since she received her Bronze Award in 2013 and her Silver Award in 2016. Reno’s Gold Award project was named “The Queen Bee Project.” Her goal was to hold educational events about the importance of honey bees, how they differ from yellow jackets, ways to help the bees, and how to create native plant pollinator gardens. Due to COVID-19, her project had to be reworked to be a socially distanced project, so it became virtual. Reno educated many families via Zoom meetings, slideshow presentations, creating “bee bombs” filled with native pollinator garden seeds, and interactive presentations given by core team member Jan Morabito. Pollinator gardens were created at Bondsville Mill Park so participants could plant their perennial seed bombs after their educational sessions along with creating their own home pollinator gardens. Painted pollinator flower fact plaques/stones were created for Bondsville Mill Park to increase visitors’ awareness of the native pollinator plants and how the plants help the bees. These informational stones provide visitors facts about the native plants in the gardens and their benefits to the pollinator bees. Reno also created a “Bee Day” program for a local preschool to use once COVID-19 is not a threat. Her program book included crafts, games, large puzzles, informational slides, handouts, and animated interactive bee presentation materials.

MaryAnn Rodda (right), head of the Downingtown Area Girl Scout Service Unit, pinned the Gold Award to Bianca Reno’s vest.

It is estimated that over 50 people participated in Reno’s project, not including those who shared the knowledge they acquired through “The Queen Bee Project” with others. Due to the virtual nature of the project, some families even participated from out of state. Due to the modifications due to COVID-19, Reno’s total number of project hours was more than double the usual number of hours needed for a Gold Award project. Bianca is the daughter of Luann and Eric Reno and the granddaughter of Rose Marie Orehek of Vandling, the late Lou Orehek and Barbara Schultz of Glen Mills.

Consignors, who normally sell spring and summer items at the spring sale and fall and winter items at the fall event, have been saving up all their merchandise, so clothing for all four seasons will be for sale on June 5, including holiday outfits, dress shoes, sneakers, Halloween costumes, bathing suits, dresses, shorts, T-shirts, winter coats, boots and snow pants. Attendees will also be able to stock up on books, toys, games, puzzles, DVDs and electronics. There will also be baby supplies for sale, including baby toys, baby-proofing items, baby carriers, monitors, blankets, feeding supplies, toilet training implements, play mats, strollers, highchairs, car seats, jumpers and bouncers. Master Gardeners Offer Expertise BY FRANCINE FULTON

A

s spring planting season begins, those who have questions about growing plants are invited to contact the Penn State Extension Master Gardeners of Chester County, who have established a free hotline for gardeners. Gardeners may also call the Penn State Extension office at 610-696-3500 and choose option 1 to leave a message with their name and contact information and details of their issue. A volunteer Master Gardener will provide a return call. Questions may also be emailed to chestermg@psu.edu along with photos that can help the Master Gardeners identify the plant or issue. Master Gardener coordinator Meagan Hopkins-Doerr said that people call the hotline, which opened on April 16, about topics such as planting vegetables and fruits, growing ornamentals and native plants and how to prune flowers and trees. “(Questions) tend to be typical things a gardener would ask - plant identification and insect identification,” she said. “They ask about plant issues, including plant disease and treatment, and how to interpret the results of soil tests. They also ask for recommendations about soil type and what kinds of plants work well in different microclimates in our yard.”

A microclimate, she explained, is a section of yard that is different from surrounding areas such as a garden located near a shelter or building that provides protection from the wind. “An example would be the crepe myrtle,” Hopkins-Doerr said. “Crepe myrtle is not a native plant, but many of us love them. If you want to plant a crepe myrtle, it should get plenty of sun but be protected from the wind.” When asked when to plant vegetable plants and seedlings outdoors, Hopkins-Doerr recommends checking maps provided by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). “There are great maps available online for your (particular) gardening zone,” she stated. “That helps you to plan for starting seeds indoors like veggies, and it tells you when you should put things out and your growing days.” Information can be found at www.noaa.gov. She added that seedlings grown indoors should not yet be planted outdoors because the plants are not used to wind and colder temperatures at night. For more information about Penn State Extension Master Gardeners of Chester County, visit www.extension.psu.edu/programs/master-gardener/counties/chester or www.facebook.com/ChesterCountyMasterGardeners. Many gardening topics are addressed on the Master Gardeners website by choosing the blue “Home Gardening Information” tab.

The American Cancer Society, a national voluntary health organization, has selected local cancer survivor Mereda Senter to serve as honorary survivor chair for this year’s Relay For Life Mereda Senter of Chester County celebration. In place of an in-person event and to keep everyone safe, a drive-through event with virtual ceremonies will take place on Saturday, May 22, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Downingtown West High School, 445 Manor Ave., Downingtown. This year’s theme is “The Greatest Relay on Earth.” Relay For Life unites teams of friends, families, businesses, hospitals, schools and churches - people from all walks of life. Teams come together to fundraise prior to the event, all with the goal of supporting the American Cancer Society’s mission to save lives, celebrate lives and lead the fight to a world without cancer. All money raised from the event will go to cancer research, education, advocacy and services. Senter, a resident of Coatesville, is a licensed practical nurse and an ordained minister. Senter has been a Relay team captain with The Warrior Queens for seven years. It all began as a way to support a friend who had been diagnosed with thyroid cancer. Then, in 2018, Senter was diagnosed with plasma cell leukemia, which is a more aggressive form of multiple myeloma. It is a blood cancer that starts in the lymphatic system and affects the immune system’s ability to fight infections. Senter underwent several rounds of chemotherapy over a year’s time, and a stem cell transplant where she had to remain in the hospital for a month while her body built up its immune system. It has been two years since the stem cell transplant, and she remains in remission today. She will have to remain on oral chemotherapy for the rest of her life. Senter said that cancer has given her a new perspective on life. She lives every day to the fullest, making memories with her husband, Rodney; daughters, Danielle, Rhondalee and Jaimie; and her grandchildren. She is passionate about finding ways to help lower costs for cancer patient’s medical treatments, therapy, and medicines. In fact, she most recently joined the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN), a group that advocates for better access to care, cancer prevention and early detection programs, cancer research funding and more. For more information on registering a team, being a participant, making a donation, becoming a sponsor or volunteering for the Relay For Life, visit www.relayforlife.org/pacc and follow the event on social media @rflpacc.

There are few things in this world that trigger a case of nostalgia for baby boomers like drive-in movie theaters. But, it isn’t only boomers who appreciate these icons of entertainment; Gen Xers and millennials are packing the kids in the car or setting out for the perfect date night. Seriously, if you want to score some points with your significant other, a surprise trip to one of Pennsylvania’s drive-ins would be a great departure from the same old date-night routine. Pennsylvania was an early adopter of the outdoor movie theater craze. In April 1934, Shankweiler’s Drive-In in Orefield, Lehigh County, became the second drive-in movie theater to open in the U.S. Today, it is the oldest operating drive-in in the country. The Keystone State ranks second behind New York in the number still in operation. The evolution of technology, like the switch from window speakers to radio sound and the move from traditional to digital screens, has improved the quality of picture and sound. But the essence of the drive-in experience hasn’t changed in more than 70 years - waiting for the sun to go down, the smell of freshly popped popcorn and making memories with family and friends. My own memories include taking in a movie with a carload of friends when I was a teenager and then going back to the Columbia Drive-In (no longer in operation) as a young mom with my husband and our children watching from the open hatchback of our car.

AAUW Awards Scholarships Three area women received college scholarships from AAUW West Chester - Chester County as part of the branch’s support of nontraditional woman students whose education has been interrupted due to family obligations, employment or lack of funding. In addition to the annual Alice Lawson Scholarship, providing a $1,500 award, the branch added two Pandemic Relief Scholarships of $1,400 each this year. The Alice Lawson Scholarship winner is Jaleesa Washington of Downingtown. Washington, the mother of an 11-year-old daughter, completed an Associate of Science in business management at Harcum College, with honors, in May 2020. She is currently enrolled in a business administration program at Bloomsburg University, with plans to continue at Temple University for a master’s degree. Washington has a goal of owning her own food business, which she has already named Ja’s Kitchen. The winners of the Pandemic Relief Scholarships are Katelyn Hollis of Malvern and Nichole Carter of Phoenixville. Funds for these

two one-time scholarships were donated by AAUW members in response to the economic challenges created by the pandemic for nontraditional woman students. Hollis earned a bachelor’s degree in education from Ohio University in 2011. After working in education, she decided to step away from the field and moved to Port-au-Prince, Haiti, where she became the director of an orphanage and a house mother for children living there. She is currently enrolled at Immaculata College in the College of Adult Professional Studies, with a goal of achieving a Bachelor of Science in nutrition/dietetics. Carter is enrolled at the University of Valley Forge, majoring in early childhood education. She has been engaged in this field for more than 20 years, earning an associate degree in 2015. She is currently working on a bachelor’s degree at Valley Forge. Carter works as lead infant/toddler teacher at Mom’s House of Greater Philadelphia in Phoenixville and hopes to continue working with children after graduation.

Coatesville VAMC Wins Award Coatesville Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VAMC) was recognized by the Arbor Day Foundation program as a 2020 Tree Campus Healthcare facility. Coatesville VAMC said that taking care of green spaces is a priority for the campus because not only do trees contribute to the environment, but they can also promote physical activity and create calming spaces that are essential to stress recovery. Both outcomes are important to the health and rehabilitation efforts for veterans in long-term care, the VAMC said. The announcement means Coatesville VAMC was recognized for the second year in a row for making a mission-aligned impact on community wellness through tree education, investment, and community

What We Miss

and paper. It is also a simple pleasure to read a book borrowed from the library, not one that is downloaded onto a device.

BY FRANCINE FULTON

A girlfriend of mine recently related a story about her son’s friend. The two teenagers were playing video games at her house when she told them to finish up at about a quarter after 6 because they would be eating dinner. Her son’s friend seemed puzzled by the phrase. She later learned that terms like a quarter after, half-past 6 and 10 minutes to 5 were completely foreign to him. Apparently, he could only read time from a digital clock. So, he recognized 6:15 p.m. but not a quarter after 6. A teenager not appreciating the subtleties of telling time got me to thinking. What else do youths of today not know about? A list quickly came to mind, including vinyl records and record players, payphones, foldable maps kept in the glove compartment, beepers, telephone books, Myspace, dial-up internet, CB radios, VCR players and unlocking a car with a key.

Many families, including ours, fight hard to keep traditions alive and to make our own traditions as well. And although that dairy is now a fitness center and there are no more ducks on the pond, my family and I can still go on a Sunday drive back to the airport and watch the planes take off and land.

Going to the record/video store. When our favorite group came out with a new album, we could not wait for a trip to the record store. So many bands and singers prided themselves on having the most creative artwork on the album cover, which is now a lost art. We also enjoyed trips to the video stores, like Blockbuster, where there were hundreds of movies on VHS to choose from. We argued about the titles, but eventually settled on one or two movies to take home. And, of course, we always rewound them in the VCR player when we were done watching them. “Be Kind, Rewind.” Playing outdoors. A lot of youths today spend a good deal of time on their phones and tablets. We did not have devices. Instead, we played outside. A wide-open field was turned into a baseball diamond or a place to play football, soccer or kickball. When we were younger, we played hopscotch, jacks and tag. Our games were simple. If it rained, we played checkers or built houses of cards.

Sunday drives. Growing up, my family did not have a lot of money, so we found free or inexpensive things to do. On Sundays, we always took a long drive. This was generally followed by getting ice cream at a local dairy that had a large pond, where we fed the ducks stale bread that we had brought from home. My dad also loved going to the local airport near our house, where we watched the small planes take off and land. He had such a fascination with airplanes, and I am so glad that, before he passed away, we were able to take him to a real air show, where we got the see the Blue Angels and much more.
