Students Showcase Model Dream Homes In Virtual Competition By Francine Fulton
Each year, fifth-graders from throughout the Delaware Valley, including Berks and Chester counties, create three-dimensional homes to compete in Habitat for Humanity of Chester County’s (HfHCC) “Build a House … Build a Dream” contest. This year, however, because of the coronavirus pandemic, contest organizers had to make the 17th annual event virtual. Instead of bringing their model homes to Church Farm School in Exton on March 23, participating students were invited to

During World Wars I and II, Americans were urged to plant “victory gardens” as the nation faced potential food shortages. At the time, fresh vegetables were grown in people’s yards and at public parks, churches and schools. Today, a new movement to create “coronavirus victory gardens” has begun locally and nationwide. Since nurseries and garden centers have been designated as essential businesses in most places, gardeners are able to purchase necessary supplies, including soil and starter plants. Locally, the Penn State Chester County Master Gardeners are promoting “victory over virus” gardens, a term used by Master Gardener Tony Buck. Local residents are encouraged to plant vegetables for themselves and to share the harvest with neighbors. “Victory gardens were promoted by

Another box is located in Dawkins Park in Caln Township, located next to the Coatesville Area High School campus, on Pennsylvania Avenue between North Caln Road and Veterans Drive near the park pavilion. The Abdala Park box is located between Ninth and 10th avenues in Coatesville on the south side of Business Route 30 next to Walgreens. The Ash Park box is located between Third and Fourth avenues between Kersey and Walnut streets in Coatesville. Three additional box locations are in the works for Parkesburg, Gap and Phoenixville. “Our mission statement (on each box) is ‘Take what you need; leave what you can,’” George noted. The community is invited to place donations of food and

It is recommended that people donate cans with tab tops that are easy to open for those without access to a can opener. Razors, clothing and frozen food should not be placed in the boxes. It Takes a Village has also recently started a campaign to help people in need directly by asking for donations on its Facebook page. “If someone is really impacted by the coronavirus, they can fill out a form and volunteers will coordinate donations to those people,” George explained. “They will say exactly what they need, (such as) what type of food and what type of cleaning products they need. We will have a coordinator pick up donations. It’s a tangible way of helping.” She said that the organization will also refer those in need to

Gardens from pg 1 the government during World Wars I and II to increase people’s self-reliance in growing food at home, said Meagan HopkinsDoerr, Master Gardener coordinator. “Harkening back to that, it is about self-reliance, particularly as we go to the store and see empty shelves. She explained that even those without large backyards can create gardens in containers. “Many plants lend themselves nicely to growing in containers, including lettuces, eggplants and tomatoes, Hopkins-Doerr said. “It is crucial that any container have good drainage, so you need to make sure there are drainage holes. There are also some plants that are specifically marketed as container varieties as they stay smaller and have other features that lend themselves to tighter spaces. An example is the compact eggplant. She said that people can use locally purchased vegetables to plant, while some gardeners prefer planting from seed. “The cheaper option is to start from seeds, she stated. “But before buying seeds, make sure you have enough time to germinate, transplant if starting indoors and harvest during their optimal growing environment. Hopkins-Doerr notes that planting a garden in the ground
rather than in a container requires some preparation. “The land will need to be prepared first. That means removing any existing plants, likely tilling the soil to break it up and adding compost to enhance the soil structure and fertility, she advised. “It is best to do a soil test so you know your soil’s pH and if you should add any fertilizers. You can also build or purchase raised beds and add purchased soil. Plants should be watered regularly when the soil is dry. “It is preferable to have some type of mulch overtop, which helps (prevent) evaporation. If your plants are dry to the touch, your plants need water, said Hopkins-Doerr. Gardening, Hopkins-Doerr added, is an activity people can enjoy during the stay-at-home order. “It’s a great family activity, especially if you have kids, she said. “One of the easiest plants to grow are peas. I don’t know if kids would like them, but they are exceptionally easy to grow. She said it is not necessary to have a green thumb to grow a productive garden. “It’s not hard, and there are a lot of resources online, she stated. had been working on their entries, and we reached out to them letting them know we would figure something out. We had to come up with a Plan B.” This year, 28 students submitted their dream home designs for the virtual contest, which took place on May 2. To view the entries, readers may visit www.YouTube.com and search for “Virtual Build a House Build a Dream Event.” A highlight of this year’s submissions included “green” designs with features such as rooftop gardens and areas for composting and recycling. One entry included a bioethanol fireplace. Other houses had helipads and ball pits, and one entry was a greenhouse. “The (students) are so clever,” Patterson stated. “Many of them thought of ecofriendly aspects, which is great.” The YouTube video also features a statement from NBC10’s Bill Henley, a supporter of the
event who was set to be master of ceremonies for the third year. “He made an in-home video congratulating the students on their accomplishments,” Patterson noted. In a typical year, students are present along with their projects while judges, who are local architects, engineers and HfHCC volunteers, view the houses and ask questions. Prizes are then awarded. “The judges base their decision on how articulate the students are while talking, the overall design, how much effort went into the home and what their inspiration looks like,” Patterson said, There is no cost for students to participate, but the event is a fundraiser for HfHCC. Local businesses sponsor the design competition, including presenting sponsor Fox & Roach/Trident Charities, and they are listed in the event program. This year, the students’ work

Some submitted photos and some videos,” said Patterson. “(Instead), we celebrated the creativity and all the hard work people put in. “ She added that HfHCC was also able give away prizes to student participants, who each received a ticket to be entered into a random drawing. Five grand prizes were also presented through a random drawing, in which participants were invited to purchase tickets. Prizes included day passes to Disney World, tickets to theme parks and additional family fun packages. “The drawing raised $890, and the event itself raised more than $17,000 to go directly to building affordable housing in Chester County,” Patterson noted, adding that HfHCC projects are currently underway in West Grove and Coatesville. language learning lessons via telephone, smartphone and computer video conferencing, along with worksheets sent through the mail. In addition, technical training for tutors is available virtually. According to Terri Potrako, VEP executive director, the organization already had plans in place that could enable staff members to work remotely. “We had a continuity plan, which is more on the lines of what a business would anticipate. It could be anything from power outages to a natural disaster,” she stated. “No one expected a pandemic, but we had a structure in place, and we were building up the ability for our staff to work remotely. We had our own laptops and phone system and database secured via a web platform.” Even before the pandemic, VEP was offering remote services for its students as well. “Traditionally, over 34 years, VEP mostly had adult immigrants come to the office, be interviewed, take tests and meet their tutors in a physical location,” Potrako explained. “Over the last several years, we needed to be mobile because the adult learners don’t always have cars and they are trying to fit in learning English in between life’s demands. Instead of people coming to West Chester, we were going out to Coatesville and Phoenixville - anywhere there was need. We called it ‘ VEP Without Walls.’” She said that the VEP staff members and tutors immediately stepped into action when the
office doors closed. “We adapted overnight. We physically stopped meeting on March 14, and on March 15 we were still tutoring,” Potrako pointed out. “We had tutors at first meet outside with distancing. Then, when the restrictions really came into play, they (tutored) by telephone and sent their students things by mail.” Currently, student/tutor pairs meet via Zoom. Training was provided to the tutors. “We are on our third workshop that we’ve done in the past five weeks to help tutors become adept at virtual teaching,” Potrako noted. “It was a concentrated effort to get used to Zoom. We felt it was our responsibility to present to our tutors new ways of creating lessons and English language learning though all this technology.” The March training for tutors was done via Zoom, and in April, the organization moved its “Peer to Peer” workshops online. The workshops, normally held in person several times a year, focus on current trends or topics of interest to tutors. More than 40 people attended the virtual workshops. Potrako noted that the student/tutor pairs have adapted quickly to Zoom and frequently use the screen sharing feature. Students and tutors receive companion textbooks, so those can also be referenced during a Zoom call. “The other beauty of Zoom is the face-to-face contact,” she said. “You are not losing that relationship connection. You are getting a better sense of listening
and the visual you need to correct someone’s language, which is different from a phone (session).” Potrako added that students seem even more determined to learn English during this time. “It’s brought out a creative spirit,” she said, noting that staff members also meet via Zoom. “We are impressed by all the things that our students are doing and still making time for their tutors even if they are managing two or three children at home and are still working. It’s remarkable.” For more information about VEP, including how to become a volunteer tutor, readers may email volunteer.english@ volunteerenglish.org or visit www.volunteerenglish.org.

Bridge Of Hope from pg 1 Volunteers. Neighboring Volunteers make the difference by offering encouragement, connections and resources.” During the coronavirus pandemic, Beiler reported that Neighboring Volunteers have adapted their efforts to keep with social distancing requirements. For example, they have arranged Zoom game nights, have sung “Happy Birthday” to a
6-year-old while standing outside on the sidewalk and purchased groceries for clients. Beiler said mothers in the program are especially in need of support during this time. “One mom is trying to get her resume together and (she and a Neighboring Volunteer) did it by computer,” she reported. “A mom had to have surgery in March, and her Neighboring Volunteers were taking meals to her. Her kids learned to prepare (a meal) through FaceTime. (Volunteers) walked through it with them on how to make the meal.” She also noted that one local mom is being provided child care by a senior citizen who has agreed to self-quarantine when not baby-sitting. “The woman stays with the

common bond that all the board members share, however, is a commitment to the mission and core values of Bishop Shanahan High School, which can be summarized by its guiding principle, “People of God; People for Others.” The board serves as a model for other Catholic schools and is notable for its committee structure, commitment to stewardship and willingness to provide quality Catholic education to as many students as possible in a fiscally responsible way. kids and goes back to her cottage and is completely quarantined,” Beiler explained. Beiler said that clients are currently undergoing additional difficulties because of COVID-19. “Many have lost their jobs or had hours reduced to below life-sustaining (levels). Some have lost child care or access to transportation, jeopardizing their ability to work,” she noted. Because of the challenges and the expectation that even more people will seek help from Bridge of Hope, Beiler emphasized that additional Neighborhood Volunteers from local faith communities are urgently needed by the organization. She added that the volunteer training program is offered online. “Neighboring Volunteers fill in as an extended family. (They do) what your family would do for you,” Beiler noted. “There are many ways to help in these times; it’s just a little different.” For more information, including volunteer opportunities, readers may call 610-280-0280 or 866-670-HOPE or visit www.chestercounty.bridge ofhopeinc.org.
