Openings are still available at Nature Day Camps being offered this summer at the Green Valleys Watershed Association (GVWA). During the hands-on learning sessions, children ages 4 to 12 are invited to discover the natural world through exploration and learning activities offered at Welkinweir, GVWA’s headquarters, which features 219 acres of ponds, meadows and forests. One of the goals of the Rotary Club of Coatesville is to present grants to local nonprofit organizations. Grant applications are currently being accepted at www.coatesvillerotary.org, and grants are issued on a biannual basis. To finance the cost of distributing grants, as well as scholarships that the club awards to local high school students, money is raised by the club through fundraisers. Most recently, club members manned a food booth at Brandywine Hospital’s annual Strawberry Festival, selling hot dogs and hamburgers to festival visitors. See Coatesville Rotary pg 2

DAR Presents American History Awards Concert To Feature Irish, Scottish Music By Francine Fulton

The Chester County Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) recently presented Outstanding Work in American History Awards to local eighth-graders. Unlike the DAR’s annual American History Essay Contest, which ask students to complete essays that are judged by DAR members, the Outstanding Work in American History Awards are given to students who are chosen by the staff members at local public and parochial schools. “We send an invitation to each middle school in Chester County to participate,” explained Kym Dyer, history award committee chair. “Each year, the school’s educators identify one student in the graduating eighth-grade class who has demonstrated achievement, interest and knowledge of our American history. “

Engle Middle School; Ella Prieto - Fugett Middle School; Erin Dychdala - Holy Family School; Nicholas Gonzalez - Kennett Middle School; Gavin Que - Lionville Middle School; Jacob Steward - North Brandywine Middle School; Kayla Kittlitz - Octorara Junior High School; Chloe Lockwood - C.F. Coatesville Rotary from pg 1 “We gave out $20,000 in grants in 2017,” reported club member Dave Seegers. “We are always out there looking for service organizations that can use our help. We ask them to submit an application to receive a grant, and the grant committee decides how much money will be allocated.” One of the 2017 grantees was Handi-Crafters, an employmentand disability-focused support service program. Annually, Handi-Crafters helps more than 400 differently abled individuals to access employment opportunities in the community, as well as at the organization’s Skill Development Center in Thorndale. Handi-Crafters serves people in Chester County and surrounding counties. Those who work at the center are paid an hourly skill-based wage, and they receive a biweekly paycheck. The client workers perform various duties such as labeling, sorting, assembling

boxes and putting together kits for a well-known shoe polish brand. “(Handi-Crafters utilizes) the World of Work training course developed by a community employment team, which prepares clients to learn applicable skills that lead to success in competitive employment, (such as) interview skills and workplace etiquette,” reported Seegers. “Several clients have secured positions in local businesses in this area.” Seegers noted that he paid a personal visit to the HandiCrafters facility and was impressed with the work ethic of the client workers and the caring nature of the staff members. “I saw love, care, happiness and pride (and people) whose lives were greatly improved because of the organization’s commitment to the clients,” he stated. Handi-Crafters is currently seeking volunteers to work

Anyone planning to travel this summer may want to consider taking precautions to protect their health. Patient First has posted health-related vacation tips. Travelers should ask their doctor about health issues and health care in the regions they plan to visit. Vaccinations or certain medications may be necessary. Travelers should research the area’s medical facilities, including hospitals, urgent care centers, and pharmacies. Readers should also remember to take any prescription and nonprescription medication they might need. They should pack the medicine in a carry-on bag if they fly so they do not lose the medicine if their luggage gets lost. While traveling, people should wash their hands frequently to protect against viruses and bacteria. When traveling by car, people should wear seat belts and take frequent breaks to help drivers stay alert behind the wheel and give everyone a chance to stretch their muscles. Vacationers should not forget about sun protection. Before going outside, they should protect their skin from the sun’s damaging ultraviolet (UV) rays. People should always use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a minimum of 30 SPF, even when it is cloudy. Sunscreen should be applied 15 to 20 minutes before one leaves home. People should reapply sunscreen at least every two hours and after swimming. Wide-brimmed hats help to shade the neck and face, but they do not offer complete protection. People should use sunscreen on these sensitive skin areas. Travelers should also wear light-weight sun-protective clothing. Long sleeves and long pants will help protect skin. Travelers should wear sunglasses that block UV rays and also take advantage of shade whenever possible. They should keep in mind the sun’s UV rays are most intense between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Travelers should carry any important medical history with them, along with the name, address and phone number of an emergency contact. In keeping with Pennsylvania’s long history of conservation, House Resolution 901 was recently adopted by the state House to recognize the 125th anniversary of the state park system, which is operated by the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR). The first State Forest Reserve was established with the purchase by the Commonwealth of 7,000 acres in Clinton County at the end of the 19th century. Also featured during the concert will be traditional Irish dancers from the Hooley School of Irish Dance. “They will do their own dances to recorded music, and they will also get up and dance whenever we play something that is danceable,” Diviney explained. Another special guest during the evening will be champion Irish step dancer Emily Warren. Warren’s ceilidh dance team placed 24th out of 700 competing teams in the world championship in April 2017 in Ireland. “She is fun to watch and has a special talent in getting members of the audience to join her to learn a few dance steps,” Diviney noted. This is the band’s third appearance as part of the Honey Brook concert series. “We love to play Honey Brook,” Diviney remarked. “Each time we played, we had a very nice crowd. When we are on break, we get to talk to people. We really enjoy playing there.” Diviney said the concert will

(The band) has really taken off,” he said. “We do a lot of weddings and festivals, and we do concerts similar to the one in Honey Brook,” Diviney noted. “We played this year for Nora Roberts, the author, who had an Irish ceilidh (party) where she lives in Boonsboro, Maryland. We will be playing in July at the Endless Mountain Music Festival, a two-week festival in Wellsboro, (Pa.), and New York, along with bands from China, Russia and Korea. Oral Hygiene Tips For Pets It is not just what a pet puts inside his or her mouth that can make a difference in comfort and health, but the way pet owners take care of pets’ teeth, gums, and more. Oral hygiene, this oft-overlooked component of pet care, can mean the difference between a happy, healthy pet and one that may be suffering in silence. The American Veterinary Dental College (AVDC) says brushing an animal’s teeth is the single most effective means to maintain oral health between professional vet examinations. Bacteria that forms naturally in an animal’s mouth will contribute to the formation of plaque which, left

observed, dogs or cats should be seen by a veterinarian to find out if a dental issue is at the root of the problem. Some pet owners are reticent to handle oral healthcare for their companion animals because they fear the pet may bite if uncomfortable. Although this is always a possibility, dogs and cats can grow accustomed to teeth being brushed or wiped with patience, says AVDC. Oral rinses and special chews also can reduce plaque formation. Dental health is an important component of responsible pet ownership. Home oral hygiene and professional cleanings and examinations can help pets remain healthy.

Golf Outing To Benefit Food Pantry The 2018 Honey Brook Food Pantry Charity Golf Outing will take place on Monday, July 9, at 8:30 a.m. at the Honeybrook Golf Club, 1422 Cambridge Road, Honey Brook. The event will begin at 7:30 a.m. with a continental breakfast; the range and practice green will also be open at that time. There will be a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. Following play, golfers will enjoy lunch and there will be an awards ceremony. Attendees will also have an opportunity to win prizes. For more information and to register, readers may visit w w w. h o n e y b r o o k g o l f. c o m / events/food-pantry-outing. Those interested in sponsorship information are asked to contact Donna Horvath at donna@honey brookgolf.com.

All proceeds from the event will benefit the pantry, which is located at the Good Food Distribution Center, 5064 Horseshoe Pike, Honey Brook. Two distributions are held each month - on the second Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and on the fourth Wednesday from 4 to 6:30 p.m. The pantry serves residents of Chester County living in the Twin Valley School District and the immediate surrounding area. During the distributions, clients receive nonperishable food items, beef and poultry, dairy products and fresh produce. In addition, healthy cooking demonstrations are provided during distribution days and every distribution is staffed by a registered dietitian and health educator from Chester County Hospital who offers blood pressure checks

and provides health education. Ken Ross, board chairman, recently issued a statement about the pantry, noting that it serves approximately 700 people per month. “At our current pace, we will add nearly 120 families seeking help this year alone, continuing to demonstrate the need that exists,” he reported. “It is important to note that nearly half the households served by the pantry are families with children. He noted that the pantry also offers a home delivery service. “Many of our clients have serious disabilities and many are elderly, driving a dramatic increase in the need for home deliveries averaging 33 per month so far in 2018, an increase of 62 percent over last year,” he reported. In addition to the regular food provided monthly, Ross noted

that supplemental food boxes will again be distributed to more than 350 children in need during the summer months. The Children’s Backpack Program will resume in September, providing weekend food assistance. The pantry also offers a “Garden for Life” growing program, in which families are provided seeds, fertilizers and training in order to grow their own food. For more information about the pantry, readers may visit www.honeybrookfoodpantry.org or search for “Honey Brook Food Pantry” on Facebook. Church Farm School Celebrates 100 Years

State Sen. Andy Dinniman recently recognized the Church Farm School on its 100th anniversary. Dinniman visited the school and presented the Head of School, the Rev. Edmund K. “Ned” Sherrill II, with a Senate citation. Opened on April 1, 1918, with five students, the Church Farm School sustained itself largely as a working farm until the 1980s. Students would work the farm half the day and study the remainder of the day. When the need for phasing out farming operations

became a reality, the school made the decision to sell off most of its acreage and create an endowment for the future support of the school. Today, the Church Farm School serves a student body of 200 young men in grades nine through 12 from the Mid-Atlantic region and around the world. It offers a college preparatory curriculum with average class sizes of seven to 12 students. For more information, readers may visit www.gocfs.net.
