In order to stay in touch with congregation members during the recent stayat-home order, Thorndale United Methodist Church (TUMC) held a new “Waving Wednesday” ministry. As part of the nine-week initiative, a group gathered at the church at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesdays and caravanned throughout the community to honk and wave and say hello to congregation members and their neighbors as a way to promote camaraderie during the coronavirus pandemic. Pastor Shauna Ridge came up with the idea for Waving Wednesday after hearing about birthday party drive-bys, parades and similar efforts. The goal was to greet every member of the congregation. “We attempted to do a drive-by
and wave at everyone who worships with us,” she said. “We called the night before and asked people to stand on their porch. We probably got to 85% or 90% of the worshipping church.” She said the effort grew as neighbors of congregation members joined in. “The really cool thing that would happen is we would drive by and honk to our members and their neighbors came out,” said Ridge. “We ended up waving to whoever was out and about. If we drove by the mailman, we would honk and wave at him. We honked and waved in the Giant parking lot (located next to the church). It was fun and a way to spread joy and laughter in the midst of what was going on.” Ridge pointed out that congregation member Bill LaBriola joined the caravan and loaded an old TUMC sign in the See TUMC pg 4

David’s Drive Collects Items For Veterans, Announces Fundraiser David’s Drive 831 (DD831), a Chester Countybased organization with the motto of “Helping
Veterans Because We Should,” continued its charitable work during the coronavirus outbreak. For a period of six weeks, the charity purchased and packed nonperishable food items that were delivered to local at-risk veterans. DD831 is named for David Turner Jr., who was employed at the Coatesville Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center when he passed away at the age of 20 in December 2009. His family members started the all-volunteer David’s Drive 831 charity to benefit veterans by providing much-needed goods and services. The 831 symbolizes the phrase “I love you,” because the phrase contains eight letters in three words that have one meaning. DD831’s effort in partnership with the Coatesville VA began on March 30. On that day, the Turner family picked up cases of See David’s Drive pg 3
Over the course of six weeks, Sam (left), Joy (center) and David Turner Sr. from David’s Drive 831 (DD831) packed more than 400 bags of food for local veterans. The charity purchased the food at cost from local grocery stores. DD831 also announced that St. Joseph’s Parish’s fourth annual golf outing on July 13, sponsored by the Knights of Columbus Council 7208, will benefit DD831.

Student Joins Church Effort To Offer Free Masks By Francine Fulton
When Emma Aucker, 16, learned that her church - Central Presbyterian Church (CPC) in Downingtown - was beginning an outreach to offer free masks to the community, she quickly decided to assist with the effort as part of her required graduation project at Downingtown High School West (DHSW), where she will be a junior this fall. As part of the initiative, called Masks for Neighbors, local residents are invited to pick up a mask free of charge from an outdoor display at See Student pg 4

Right now, we provide emergency shelter, residential housing, and housing support services to men, women, and families in Lancaster and Chester counties. Serving men is a new ability in Lancaster County, and we are very excited about it.” Although the need for the services provided by GSS has increased, the organization has been able to keep the lives of its existing participants stable, thanks to support from the community. “Our ability to provide support and guidance during this time enabled all of our participants to remain in their housing, pay their bills, and continue life as normally as possible during such an abnormal time,” Settle said. As with other organizations, the delivery of services had to change, requiring flexibility from both the GSS team members and participants. GSS continued to provide emergency shelter and residential housing services while maintaining state-issued safety requirements and conducting cautious intakes for new clients. GSS family resource coordinators met with participants via Zoom, FaceTime, WhatsApp, and other virtual-meeting software to provide housing

food) at the Great Hall at the VA,” Turner reported, noting that Crop’s Fresh Marketplace in Downingtown also joined the effort by offering groceries at cost. Turner also announced that the annual David’s Drive picnic and clothing collection, which was scheduled for May 17, was canceled. As part of the event, lunch is provided to those who bring donations of new men’s and women’s underwear, socks and Tshirts, which are given to homeless and hospitalized veterans from the Coatesville VA. The first David’s Drive picnic was held on May 22, 2010, which would have been David’s 21st birthday. Instead of the picnic, DD831 hosted a donation drive in the park on June 14, Flag Day. “We just provided a safe dropoff for people because veterans need this stuff,” Turner said. “People were very generous. We ended up receiving donations with an estimated (worth) of $10,000.” Additionally, St. Joseph’s Parish’s fourth annual golf outing, sponsored by the Knights of Columbus Council 7208, will benefit DD831. food products that were ordered from Triple Fresh Market, where David was once employed. With the help of staff members, the food was loaded into the DD831 pickup truck. “(Triple Fresh) provided the product at cost,” said David Turner Sr., DD831 founder and president. “(We then) traveled less than a mile away to East Fallowfield Park, where David was a volunteer and his memorial bench is located.” Members of the Turner family sorted and separated all the canned goods into green reusable David’s Drive tote bags. Each bag included items such as tuna fish, boxed macaroni and cheese, canned chicken, peanut butter and jelly, juice, canned soups, nonperishable milk, juice and applesauce. On March 30, the family, assisted by Jennifer Lilly, chief of volunteer services at the Coatesville VA, packaged 48 bags containing approximately 20 food products in each, totaling close to 1,000 products. The packages were then transported to the Coatesville VA to be distributed by health care personnel to at-risk veterans in the community, including those who receive home health care and others in the HUD-VASH (Housing and Urban Development VA Support Housing) program. Over the course of six weeks, David’s Drive donated 450 bags, totaling $6,000 worth of food. “When the weather cooperated, we met at the park, but for the last couple weeks we (sorted the

DASD To Provide Meals To Children
Student from pg 1
In an effort to support its community and provide needed relief during the coronavirus pandemic, Downingtown Area School District (DASD) will offer free meals to all children, up to age 18, throughout the entire summer. Prior to the government-mandated closure, DASD provided approximately 930 daily meals, including breakfast and lunch, to students on the district’s free and reduced meal plan. Since then, Aramark, DASD’s food services provider, has assisted the district with food distribution for area children, coordinating a drive-through, socially-distant service at Downingtown High School West. Since the closure, DASD has provided meals to area children,
CPC, located at 100 W. Uwchlan Ave. (Route 113), Downingtown. The masks, which are of various patterns and sizes, are placed in biodegradable plastic bags and attached to netting with clothespins. Emma, who is a member of the church youth group, explained that the Mission Team at the church conceived the idea to offer free masks to people who need them. “Since the first masks went up on June 4, we have provided the community with around 600 masks,” she reported. “Each one is made by volunteers and free of charge.” Emma said that while the church remains closed due to COVID-19, congregation members keep in touch through online Sunday services and through the church’s weekly email newsletter. “I had been searching for a graduation project, and when I heard about (the mask project), I thought, ‘This is something I can do to help the community,’” she said, noting that pastor Penny Warren has been her mentor through the project.
expanding services in April to include all children up to age 18. “Since the closure, many families have experienced financial hardships related to the stay-at-home order and other pandemic-associated changes. DASD has recognized the need to do more to support our community,” explained business manager David Matyas. “Due to our socioeconomic level, DASD did not initially qualify for an open meal plan program. Thanks to a USDA waiver that created flexibility in eligibility, we were able to apply and be approved to serve meals to all children ages 0 to 18. We are now pleased to continue this service through the summer and hope that by extending our free meal ser-
vices, we will ease some of the concerns facing our community during this international crisis.” According to Aramark’s general manager, Will Van Patter, DASD has served more than 76,330 meals. DASD’s meal services are provided on Tuesdays from 10 a.m. to noon at Downingtown High School West, 445 Manor Ave., Downingtown. Visitors should use the Manor Avenue entrance. The district will provide a sevenday supply of breakfasts and lunches per child. There is no need to preregister or provide identification. The currently scheduled last day of services is Tuesday, Aug. 25. For more details, readers may conact Kathleen LaBricciosa at klabricciosa@dasd.org.
Anniversary
The homemade masks are made of cloth and can be easily washed. “In the beginning, most of the masks were from members of our congregation. Once we got some publicity on Facebook - in the Downingtown Borough group - we had community volunteers drop off (masks),” Emma noted. “Those who can’t make the masks themselves have generously offered to donate fabric and elastic.” The quantity of masks displayed on the fence varies from day to day. “We put them up when we have them to give people,” Emma said, noting that so far people have been responsible about not taking too many masks. “I had been worried if we put up too many at once, people would grab them. We put 20 out (recently) and two people pulled in and took one (each) for themselves.” She emphasized that the masks are free of charge. “There is not a donation box because we don’t want it to be a (fundraiser),” said Emma. “If you need a mask, take one. People have left
donations clipped to the fence, but we are not specifically collecting them.” To fulfill the graduation project requirement of 20 hours, Emma has been taking care of the mask donations and is also learning to sew from her mother, who has contributed masks to the effort. Emma also handmade the banner above the display. “Every mask has a card in it that has a blessing and information about online worship; I make those cards,” said Emma. “I also am doing emailing and coordinating community drop-offs.” Emma is a member of the high school marching band and Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) at DHSW. “I don’t know what I want to do (for a career), but helping others makes me happy,” she noted. For more information on how to donate masks or material, readers may contact Emma at emmaaucker@gmail.com. More information about CPC is available at www.facebook.com/CPC Downingtown and www.cpc downingtown.org.
members wrote thank you cards during the month of April thanking local first responders and post office staff members, among others. “We invited the congregation to express their gratitude to all of the essential workers who have kept us moving forward, including the staff at Brandywine Hospital, the post office, Giant grocery store and the police and fire departments,” Ridge noted. “We printed some cards and people either used those or what they had at home.” Currently, TUMC offers online Sunday worship services, which can be viewed at www.thorndale-umc.org. Ridge is hopeful that the church will soon hold in-person Sunday worship. “ We just approved a plan, and now we can work on the implementation
phase,” she said, adding that the church is waiting on an order of hand sanitizer and wipes and it plans to install acrylic glass. Ridge is also a member of the board of the Downingtown Area Senior Center, which is located in the TUMC building. “The senior center (is closed), but it continues to hand out food on a weekly basis,” she said. “On a Tuesday around lunchtime, the cars line up in our parking lot, and those are members of the senior center who are waiting to get free food, including boxed meals and fresh produce.” TUMC is located at 3503 Lincoln Highway, Thorndale. For more information, readers may call the church office at 610-3842433 or visit the aforementioned website.
TUMC from pg 1 back of his pickup truck so that those who passed the caravan knew where the group was from. “Whoever was in the parking lot at 10:30, we would just head out,” Ridge recalled. “Sometimes we had six, eight or 12 cars. We had a map that Cheryl Faust, our new secretary, put together. Renay Oberholtzer led us because she knows the back roads.” Ridge said all participants enjoyed the effort. “People miss connecting to other people. They were so happy to see us. We are not meant to be isolated, locked up and lonely,” she said. “It was just about spreading joy. The people driving by and waving got as much out of it as the people who were being waved to.” In addition to the Waving Wednesday initiative, church

Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) is now offering free tax drop-offs through Wednesday, July 15, at the Transformation Center, 645 E. Lincoln Highway, Coatesville, which will operate as Rapid Drop-Off site. Social distancing restrictions will be in place at the site, including the required wearing of masks for all customers. The Rapid Drop-Off process is different from the traditional process and is designed to minimize interaction between volunteers and customers. Taxpayers should come to the site with photo identifications for the primary and secondary taxpayers, social security cards for everyone on the return, and all other forms, including W-2s, 1099 forms, etc. Once at the site, they will be asked to complete intake forms and place all information into an envelope that will be provided. A VITA
volunteer will copy all information and return all originals. At a later time, a volunteer will review the return over the phone. When everything is complete and correct, it will be efiled, and an electronic copy of the return will be made available upon request. Since this is a drop-off situation, there is no guarantee on the turnaround time for returns. Volunteers will attempt to prioritize those returns that must be completed by the deadline on July 15. Those who would like their return to be e-filed before the deadline should bring the information before Saturday, July 11, if possible. For those who are getting a refund or do not owe the IRS any money, the deadline will not affect them. However, for those who owe the IRS, missing the deadline could result in additional fees.
The Transformation Center will be open for drop-off service on the following dates and times: Wednesday, July 8, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.; Thursday, July 9, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.; Saturday, July 11, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.; Monday, July 13, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Tuesday, July 14, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.; and July 15 from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Other Rapid Drop-Off sites are Orion Communities, 237 Bridge St., Phoenixville, which will be open on July 11 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., and Family Services, 1976 E. Appointments are not needed for antibody testing. The antibody test is used to determine if someone previously had COVID-19 and not to diagnose an active infection. Antibody testing is for patients who believe they may have had COVID-19 in the past, who are not currently experiencing symptoms of COVID-19, and who are at least age 5. Patient First recommends being tested at least 14 days after onset of symptoms of COVID-19 or 14 days after possible exposure, as it may take as long as two weeks for antibodies to develop. The COVID-19 antibody test used at Patient First tests to see if the blood has antibodies to the SARS-CoV-2 virus, the virus that causes COVID-19. Antibodies may be found in the blood when the body is responding or has responded to an infection, such
as COVID-19. Antibodies may give full or partial immunity to the virus to which they develop. However, it is not known at this time how long the body will have antibodies to SARS-CoV-2 or whether they actually give immunity to future infections from this virus. Blood samples will be sent to a third-party reference lab for antibody testing. Results will generally be available in about 2 to 5 days. Patients may opt to
receive their result via text message. Otherwise, patients will be contacted by phone about the result. For most patients, there is no out-of-pocket expense for antibody testing. For insured patients, the visit will be submitted to patients’ insurance plans. Patient First accepts all major insurance plans, including Medicare and Medicaid. The lab will determine what, if anything, it bills the patient. See Antibody Test pg 6

Just days after industries across Pennsylvania entered the yellow phase of reopening, a pair of schools represented Chester County and Delaware County in a statewide student video competition designed to boost the future of local manufacturing. Downingtown STEM Academy and Garnet Valley Middle School were the nominees from the Chester/Delaware County region that competed on June 9 during a “What’s So Cool About Manufacturing - Best of PA” awards event. Normally held in Harrisburg, it was streamed for the first time on YouTube with funding in part from the Chester County Economic Development Council (CCEDC). Twenty-two teams from across the state competed in the contest for first-, second- and third-place awards after winning regional competitions for their two-minute videos with manufacturers on the rewarding career opportunities available in an increasingly technology-driven industry. Downingtown STEM Academy competed with a student video featuring ONExia, a manufacturer based in Exton that specializes in robotics and automated machine integration. The West Chester University (WCU) Resource Pantry has received the Gateway to Equity Award for 2020-21 from the American Association of University Women (AAUW) West Chester - Chester County branch. The annual award honors an individual, group or organization that has shown by action and philosophy the promotion of the AAUW mission to advance equity for women and girls through advocacy, education and research. The Resource Pantry’s mission is to eliminate barriers to degree completion for students with financial need by providing access to resources, while empowering students to learn independent living skills and achieve long-term stability. Pam Frontino, associate director of Service-Learning and Volunteer Programs at WCU, manages the pantry. She explained that the program has grown from a small closet of food supplies to four rooms of dedicated space at the university, serving more than 200 students per week. The Chester County Food Bank, churches and community organizations, such as AAUW, regularly contribute nonperishable items, fresh produce, clothing items and monetary donations to the pantry.

Jackie Canan, director of healthy living at the West Chester branch of the YMCA of Greater Brandywine, cleans exercise equipment as part of the Y’s new cleaning procedures. As Chester County entered the green phase of the state’s plan for reopening, the YMCA of Greater Brandywine (YGBW) welcomed back its members and the community on June 29. Facilities will open in phases to ensure the safest experience possible. During the first week, wellness centers and indoor tracks, as well as limited group exercise classes, were offered. On July 6, YGBW was scheduled to reopen Childwatch, as well as indoor lap pools and locker rooms for lap swimmers only. Additional amenities and programming will reopen soon. For a detailed list of amenities and specific guidelines for each, readers may visit www.ymcagbw.org. As a thank you to both existing and new members, membership dues will be reduced by 20% through Monday, Aug. 31. To purchase a membership, readers may visit www.ymcagbw.org/membership. YGBW’s highest priority has always been protecting members’ health and safety, but in light of COVID-19, new protocols have been implemented, staff members have been retrained in the latest cleaning and disinfecting procedures and many modifications have been made to the facilities to continue providing members with the safest experience possible. New protocols include health screenings and temperature checks for all staff, members and visitors entering the facilities. Anyone showing signs of COVID-19 or who has a temperature of 100.4 degrees or higher will not be permitted to enter. Face masks are required when entering the YMCA and when in common areas of the YMCA. Masks may be removed during cardio workouts and
group exercise classes. Staff members will wear masks at all times, except when leading a group exercise class. The latest cleaning protocols from the CDC have been implemented, including the use of EPA-registered solutions and electrostatic sprayers. Fitness equipment has been spaced out and group exercise studios have been reconfigured to ensure social distancing. An updated member code of conduct has also been implemented to ensure everyone works together to create the safest experience possible. Additional information about YGBW’s updated health and safety protocols and procedures can be found at www.ymca gbw.org/protecting-your-health -safetyonline. Six YGBW locations opened on June 29. The Oscar Lasko branch in West Chester is expected to reopen for fitness activities in the fall. It is currently open for summer camp and child care. Branches that are open are Brandywine YMCA, 295 Hurley Road, Coatesville; Jennersville YMCA, 880 W. Baltimore Pike, West Grove; Kennett Area YMCA, 101 Race St., Kennett Square; Lionville YMCA, 101 Devon Drive, Exton; Upper Main Line YMCA, 1416 Berwyn-Paoli Road, Berwyn; and West Chester YMCA, 605 Airport Road, West Chester. Notably, branch hours have been adjusted to allow ample time for cleaning and disinfecting. Hours are Mondays through Thursdays, 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Fridays, 6 a.m. to 7 p.m.; and Saturdays and Sundays, 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Hours for those at high risk for COVID-19 are Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1 to 3 p.m.
Chester County Offers Call Center As Chester County began its green phase of operation during the COVID-19 pandemic, county officials added a call center service for business and resident questions on reopening guidelines and practices. Part of the Restore Chester County initiative, the call center is operated by Chester County Health Department staff members, with input from members of the county commissioners’ COVID-19 Business Task Force. The Restore Chester County call center number is 610-344-6225 and hours of operation are 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Mondays through Fridays. Messages left outside of these hours will receive a reply the next business day. The email option in the Contact Us section of www.restorechestercounty .org remains operational for all questions and is monitored seven days a week. Since its launch on May 27, www .RestoreChesterCounty.org has provided online business and resident toolkits featuring reopening information, with direct access to guidelines that are broken down by
20 different business and organization sectors in Chester County. Many of the questions generated through the Restore Chester County website, coming from businesses, other organizations and residents, have relied on answers from the county’s Health Department, along with responses from the regional chamber of commerce network across Chester County. Visitors to www.restorechestercounty.org have access to a Business & Org Toolkit as well as a Resident Toolkit. The Business & Org toolkit lists guidelines that span industries, including a checklist for knowing if a business is ready to open, how to get it to that point and how to find resources for obtaining personal protective equipment. Business and organizational leaders can then drill deeper by accessing the 20 business and organization sectors, including everything from agriculture and office settings to restaurants, personal care, schools, religious organizations and more.

The Coatesville Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center, 1400 Blackhorse Hill Road, Coatesville, is gradually reintroducing face-toface care for select health care services at its main facility and community clinics. The VA is focused on expanding access to care for veterans who have the greatest clinical need while ensuring a safe environment for veterans and employees. While VA health care will look different moving forward, veterans can continue to rely on their VA health care team for safe, highquality care. For the quickest access to care, veterans should call the Coatesville VA at 610-383-0239 before visiting their VA clinic for any health care needs. Virtual and telephone appointments will continue to be offered for the majority of routine visits as appropriate. These options will be discussed when veterans call to schedule an appointment. Face-to-face appointments will be available to veterans who have urgent and time-sensitive needs, if their provider feels it is medically necessary. Prescriptions will continue to be mailed to veterans’ homes. Veterans should request refills at least two weeks before they run out of their prescriptions. Veterans should be prepared for the safety precautions they will encounter during their visit. All patients, visitors and employees will enter the facility through the COVID-19 screening station at the entrance located near parking lot D. All veterans, visitors and employees are required to wear a mask or face covering while on-site. When possible, veterans should not bring family members or visitors with them to a health care appointment. Those who would like to have a family member involved can call them and have them on speakerphone during their visit or make other arrangements as needed. For more details and up-to-date information, readers may visit www.coatesville.va.gov.
