TUMC Stays Connected With “Waving Wednesday” Ministry EPC Golf Outing By Francine Fulton

As part of Thorndale United Methodist Church’s “Waving Wednesday” ministry, congregation members gathered at the church on Wednesday mornings and then caravanned throughout the community to honk and wave and say hello to congregation members and their neighbors.

In order to stay in touch with congregation members during the recent stayat-home order, Thorndale United Methodist Church (TUMC) held a new “Waving Wednesday” ministry. As part of the nine-week initiative, a group gathered at the church at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesdays and caravanned throughout the community to honk and wave and say hello to congregation members and their neighbors as a way to promote camaraderie during the coronavirus pandemic. Pastor Shauna Ridge came up with the idea for Waving Wednesday after hearing about birthday party drivebys, parades and similar efforts. The goal was to greet every member of the congregation. “We attempted to do a drive-by and wave at everyone who worships with us,” she said.

“We called the night before and asked people to stand on their porch. We probably got to 85% or 90% of the worshipping church.” She said the effort grew as neighbors of congregation members joined in. “The really cool thing that would happen is we would drive by and honk to our members and their neighbors came out,” said Ridge. “We ended up waving to whoever was out and about. If we drove by the mailman, we would honk and wave at him. We honked and waved in the Giant parking lot (located next to the church). It was fun and a way to spread joy and laughter in the midst of what was going on.” Ridge pointed out that congregation member Bill LaBriola joined the caravan and loaded an old TUMC sign in the back of his pickup truck so that those who passed the caravan knew where the group was from. Now more than ever, thanks to jobs and wages lost while the stay-at-home order was in place, resources for people experiencing homelessness or at risk of losing their homes are in demand. Thankfully, Good Samaritan Services (GSS), which serves individuals and families in Lancaster and Chester counties who have poverty-related needs, is prepared to help. “We provide a wide spectrum of services that are customizable to each individual or family at whatever place they are at in their journey to stability,” said Shadoe Settle, GSS development See EPC Golf Outing pg 2

Student Joins Church Effort To Offer Free Masks Becoming A Silly Dad

As part of her graduation project, Emma Aucker, a student at Downingtown High School West, has joined the effort at Central Presbyterian Church in Downingtown to offer free masks to the community.

When Emma Aucker, 16, learned that her church - Central Presbyterian Church (CPC) in Downingtown - was beginning an outreach to offer free masks to the community, she quickly decided to assist with the effort as part of her required graduation project at Downingtown High School West (DHSW), where she will be a junior this fall. As part of the initiative, called Masks for Neighbors, local residents are invited to pick up a mask free of charge from an outdoor display at CPC, located at 100 W. Uwchlan Ave. (Route 113), Downingtown. The masks, which are of various patterns and sizes, are placed in biodegradable plastic bags and attached to netting with clothespins. See Student pg 2

Covering the driveway with baby powder, dressing in costume and eating popsicles made of root beer and Worcestershire sauce are just some of the activities that “Silly Dad” Chad Moroz of Downingtown has taken part in along with his daughter, Alexa, 5, as part of a yearlong effort to do something silly every day for an entire year. Moroz, a stay-at-home dad, made the unique resolution on New Year’s Day, and since that time, each day has featured a different silly activity. “One of the main reasons for doing this was to inspire other dads, moms and parental figures to be sillier with their kids and grandkids,” Moroz said. Coincidentally, the activities became a way to bring a sense of joy into the household during the stay-at-home order. “Things even hit home more when the pandemic hit,” Moroz pointed out. “People needed to break away for a few minutes and smile and laugh and be silly.” Moroz keeps a list of activities that he wants to enjoy with his daughter, but other ideas come up on the spur of the moment. and other virtual-meeting software to provide housing support services. The financial impact of COVID-19 will be felt for a long time to come, and GSS expects the need for its services to increase, Settle said. The nonprofit organization depends on donations and fundraisers to operate. One such fundraiser is the golf outing hosted by Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. (EPC). “Our partnership with EPC and their willingness to organize such a wonderful event has been an incredible blessing, financially and relationally,” Settle remarked. “This is one of our biggest fundraisers of the year, and it has continued to provide funds needed to perform all of our services.” “We recognize the impact that this nonprofit has on our own neighbors in the same areas that we serve as a company,” said EPC marketing director Lauren Hillegas. “We’re honored to build this relationship with GSS to assist them in aiding families right here in our community.” The 2019 EPC Golf Outing raised $20,000, and the goal this year is to meet or surpass that total with the help of golfers and

and communications coordinator. “Our services are always expanding. Right now, we provide emergency shelter, residential housing, and housing support services to men, women, and families in Lancaster and Chester counties. Serving men is a new ability in Lancaster County, and we are very excited about it.” Although the need for the services provided by GSS has increased, the organization has been able to keep the lives of its existing participants stable, thanks to support from the community. “Our ability to provide support and guidance during this time enabled all of our participants to remain in their housing, pay their bills, and continue life as normally as possible during such an abnormal time,” Settle said. As with other organizations, the delivery of services had to change, requiring flexibility from both the GSS team members and participants. GSS continued to provide emergency shelter and residential housing services while maintaining state-issued safety requirements and conducting cautious intakes for new clients. Emma, who is a member of the church youth group, explained that the Mission Team at the church conceived the idea to offer free masks to people who need them. “Since the first masks went up on June 4, we have provided the community with around 600 masks,” she reported. “Each one is made by volunteers and free of charge.” Emma said that while the church remains closed due to COVID-19, congregation members keep in touch through online Sunday services and through the church’s weekly email newsletter. “I had been

searching for a graduation project, and when I heard about (the mask project), I thought, ‘This is something I can do to help the community,’” she said, noting that pastor Jenny Warren has been her mentor through the project. The homemade masks are made of cloth and can be easily washed. “In the beginning, most of the masks were from members of our congregation. Once we got some publicity on Facebook - in the Downingtown Borough group - we had community volunteers drop off (masks),” Emma noted. “Those who can’t make

sponsors, Hillegas said. The 13th annual EPC Golf Outing will be held on Friday, Sept. 25, at Crossgates Golf Club, 1 Crossland Pass, Millersville. Tee times of 7 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. are available. The event had initially been planned for June. “Like many other events this year, we were faced with the decision to cancel or reschedule our event,” Hillegas commented. “We know how much this event impacts families right here in our Lancaster County and Chester County communities, so we made the decision to reschedule the June outing for September. The health and safety of our golfers and volunteers was the main driving force behind this decision, and we look forward to

what a fall golf outing for this event will look like.” The Tee It Forward contest hole that was introduced last year will be continued. Hillegas noted that while this year’s event will include bag lunches from Trio Bar and Grill, chicken barbecue from Peters’ BBQ will also be available. Chicken barbecue had been a feature of the EPC Golf Outings a few years ago, and Hillegas and her team are pleased to bring it back. the masks themselves have generously offered to donate fabric and elastic.” The quantity of masks displayed on the fence varies from day to day. “We put them up when we have them to give people,” Emma said, noting that so far people have been responsible about not taking too many masks. “I had been worried if we put up too many at once, people would grab them. We put 20 out (recently) and two people pulled in and took one (each) for themselves.” She emphasized that the masks are free of charge. “There is not a donation box because we don’t want it to be a (fundraiser),” said Emma. “If you need a mask, take one. People have left donations clipped to the fence, but we are not specifically collecting them.” To fulfill the graduation project requirement of 40 hours,

Emma has been taking care of the mask donations and is also learning to sew from her mother, who has contributed masks to the effort. Emma also handmade the banner above the display. “Every mask has a card in it that has a blessing and information about online worship; I make those cards,” said Emma. “I also am doing emailing and coordinating community drop-offs.” Emma is a member of the high school marching band and Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) at DHSW. “I don’t know what I want to do (for a career), but helping others makes me happy,” she noted. DASD To Provide Free Meals

5406 Lincoln Hwy. P.O. Box 189 Gap, PA 17527

The annual EPC Golf Outing on Sept. 25 will benefit Good Samaritan Services, which provides a range of services to assist individuals overcoming homelessness in Lancaster and Chester counties.

In an effort to support its community and provide needed relief during the coronavirus pandemic, Downingtown Area School District (DASD) will offer free meals to all children, up to age 18, throughout the entire summer. Prior to the government-mandated closure, DASD provided approximately 930 daily meals, including breakfast and lunch, to students on the district’s free and reduced meal plan. Since then, Aramark, DASD’s food services provider, has assisted the district with food distribution for area children, coordinating a drivethrough, socially-distant service at Downingtown High School West. Since the closure, DASD has provided meals to area children,

expanding services in April to include all children up to age 18. “Since the closure, many families have experienced financial hardships related to the stay-at-home order and other pandemic-associated changes. DASD has recognized the need to do more to support our community,” explained business manager David Matyas. “Due to our socioeconomic level, DASD did not initially qualify for an open meal plan program. Thanks to a USDA waiver that created flexibility in eligibility, we were able to apply and be approved to serve meals to all children ages 0 to 18. We are now pleased to continue this service through the summer and hope that by extending our See DASD pg 3

TUMC from pg 1 “Whoever was in the parking lot at 10:30, we would just head out,” Ridge recalled. “Sometimes we had six, eight or 12 cars. We had a map that Cheryl Faust, our new secretary, put together. Renay Oberholtzer led us because she knows the back roads.” Ridge said all participants enjoyed the effort. “People miss connecting to other people. They were so happy to see us. We are not meant to be isolated, locked up and lonely,” she said. “It was just about spreading joy. The people driving by and waving got as much out of it as the people who were being waved to.” In addition to the Waving Wednesday initiative, church members wrote thank you cards

during the month of April thanking local first responders and post office staff members, among others. “We invited the congregation to express their gratitude to all of the essential workers who have kept us moving forward, including the staff at Brandywine Hospital, the post office, Giant grocery store and the police and fire departments,” Ridge noted. “We printed some cards and people either used those or what they had at home.” Currently, TUMC offers online Sunday worship services, which can be viewed at www.thorndale-umc.org. Ridge is hopeful that the church will soon hold in-person Sunday worship. “ We just approved a plan, and now we can

work on the implementation phase,” she said, adding that the church is waiting on an order of hand sanitizer and wipes and it plans to install acrylic glass. Ridge is also a member of the board of the Downingtown Area Senior Center, which is located in the TUMC building. “The senior center (is closed), but it continues to hand out food on a weekly basis,” she said. “On a Tuesday around lunchtime, the cars line up in our parking lot, and those are members of the senior center who are waiting to get free food, including boxed meals and fresh produce.” TUMC is located at 3503 Lincoln Highway, Thorndale. DASD from pg 2 free meal services, we will ease some of the concerns facing our community during this international crisis.” According to Aramark’s general manager, Will Van Patter, DASD has served more than 76,330 meals. DASD’s meal services are provided on Tuesdays from 10 a.m. to noon at Downingtown High School West, 445 Manor Ave., Downingtown. Visitors should use the Manor Avenue entrance. The district will provide a sevenday supply of breakfasts and lunches per child. There is no need to preregister or provide identification. The currently scheduled last day of services is Tuesday, Aug. 25. For more details, readers may conact Kathleen LaBricciosa at klabricciosa@dasd.org.

Moroz has established a “Silly Dad” Facebook page where people can view photos and videos of the various silly activities. “I did silly popsicles and went live on my page and ate them,” he noted. “I’m trying to put a smile on people’s faces.” He is also documenting his antics in a photo album complete with photo captions that his daughter will be able to cherish for years to come. “I made the choice to be a stay-at-home dad,” he added. “I will do anything, within reason.”

Robert Allen Simmers Robert Allen Simmers, 75, died Thursday June 18, 2020 at Capitol Hill Nursing Home in Oklahoma. He was the son of the late Irvin and Bertha Simmers of Coatesville, Pa. Robert worked and retired from Lukens Steel Company. He loved hunting and fishing and had some trophies to prove it. He leaves behind three daughters: Lisa Abriola, Holly Foster and Diane Mann. His daughters loved him and will sadly miss him. He was one of six brothers, two still surviving: Gary Simmers of Coatesville and Ronald Simmers of Georgia and five sisters who are all deceased. He also leaves behind ten grandchildren. His service will be private. Family will be notified.

“My brain spins constantly because I have to entertain her, so I think of different things to do,” Moroz explained. “I have about 15 funny things that I would like to do in the coming weeks. I have a lot of ideas, but things come to both of us when we are playing or outside. I will get an idea and twist it in a silly way. Sometimes she will come up with a cool and silly thing.” In addition to those activities already mentioned, Moroz served a regular-sized dinner to his daughter on a giant-sized plate, wore every necktie he owns at one time, created a tunnel in Alexa’s room out of cardboard boxes and even took a little taste of canned cat food. “Today, I will eat an onion like an apple,” he stated on July 8. “This is day 190; I still have 176 more days to go.” Moroz hopes that other parents will consider more fun activities with their children, although they do not have to be as extreme as his. “I want to inspire people to be silly with their kids - try it for three days or a week. Every single person has a silly side,” he stated. “You don’t have to dress up. Just have your kids paint your nails.”

Antibody Test Option Posted Patient First now offers COVID-19 antibody testing at all its medical centers on a walk-in basis. Testing is available from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily. Appointments are not needed for antibody testing. The antibody test is used to determine if someone previously had COVID-19 and not to diagnose an active infection. Antibody testing is for patients who believe they may have had

COVID-19 in the past, who are not currently experiencing symptoms of COVID-19, and who are at least age 5. Patient First recommends being tested at least 14 days after onset of symptoms of COVID-19 or 14 days after possible exposure, as it may take as long as two weeks for antibodies to develop. The COVID-19 antibody test used at Patient First tests to see if the blood has antibodies to the SARS-

CoV-2 virus, the virus that causes COVID-19. Antibodies may be found in the blood when the body is responding or has responded to an infection, such as COVID-19. Antibodies may give full or partial immunity to the virus to which they develop. However, it is not known at this time how long the body will have antibodies to SARS-CoV-2 or whether they actually give immunity to future infections from this virus. See Antibody pg 5

OneRunTogether (ORT), a nonprofit organization that provides financial assistance and spiritual support to local cancer patients, will present the first “Jolly Jingle in July” Virtual 5K/10K Race from 7 a.m. on Friday, July 24, through 7 p.m. on Sunday, July 26. Because of social distancing, participants will be asked to complete a 5K or 10K on their own, whether it be running or walking on trails, roads or on treadmills. All runners and walkers who register will receive a wrapped Christmas present. The top prizes for the overall male and female winners of the 5K run will be delivered Christmas cookies from Amy’s Sweet Tooth Cookies. The virtual event will be based on an honor system, and runners are encouraged to measure the 5K (3.1 miles) or the 10K (6.2 miles) with a running app or a treadmill. Only those who run the 5K and 10K will be eligible for the top prizes. ORT volunteer Sharon Valentino, one of the race coordinators, noted the event follows ORT’s previous virtual race held in June that took the place of the annual Creamery Hustle 5K/10K that is normally held at Penn State Berks in Reading. “ We could not hold that because of the social distancing requirements, so we decided to try a virtual race,” she said, noting that all registrants in the June event received a coupon for ice cream. “We didn’t expect the response that we got. We had 110 participants. We were really excited about that.” Following the race, participants were asked if they would take part in a virtual running/walking event again, and nearly all those who were polled said they would be interested. “People were so excited (after the first virtual event), that we decided we would try to hold another one this summer,” noted Valentino. Valentino said that the runners were very competitive during the first virtual 5K/10K.

“People really wanted to prove they were being honest and took screenshots of Map My Run to prove their times,” she noted. “We honor that, but it’s not required.” The upcoming virtual event is designed to be enjoyed by individuals and families alike. “People (have been) cooped up and are looking for something to do,” Valentino said. “With a lot of summer camps not running, people are looking for things to do with their kids.” She added that the Christmas aspect of the virtual race makes it especially appealing to children. All proceeds from the event will benefit ORT, which was started by Vern Murphy, who lost his wife, Beth, to breast cancer in 2009. The charity’s motto is “OneRunTogether - so no one fights cancer alone.” Those interested in seeking financial support from the organization while undergoing treatment may complete an application at www.oneruntogether.org by clicking on Patient Grant Application. ORT’s board of directors reviews all applications, which must be signed and submitted by an oncologist or a certified medical professional. After an application is approved, bills are submitted for direct payment. Normally, Murphy personally delivers the grant money to patients throughout Berks and Chester counties and spends time with each of them. He also presents them with a Bible. During the stay-at-home order, however, Murphy instead personally called each grant recipient; Bibles and the grant money were sent through the mail. Since 2011, more than 380 grants have been given to help patients with rent, mortgage payments, utility bills and medical costs. For more details about the “Jolly Jingle in July,” readers may contact race director Steve Elliker at 484-844-1249 or visit www.facebook.com/onerun together. More information about ORT is available at www.oneruntogether.org.

Antibody from pg 4 Blood samples will be sent to a third-party reference lab for antibody testing. Results will generally be available in about 2 to 5 days. Patients may opt to receive their result via text message. Otherwise, patients will be contacted by phone about the result. For most patients, there is no

out-of-pocket expense for antibody testing. For insured patients, the visit will be submitted to patients’ insurance plans. Patient First accepts all major insurance plans, including Medicare and Medicaid. The lab will determine what, if anything, it bills the patient. For those with symptoms of

This year, organizers were unsure if the second annual golf tournament would take place because of the coronavirus pandemic and the recent stay-athome order. “The date was preset up, but we held off (on making a final decision) because we didn’t know what would happen. Once golf courses opened up, we decided to go ahead with the golf tournament,” said Yannessa. Animal House Project dba Chester County Pet Food Pantry is a charitable all-volunteer organization founded in East Fallowfield Township. Each year, the organization helps people feed and care for their companion pets in order to keep them out of shelters and rescues. The pantry’s clients include retired military personnel, senior citi-

zens, victims of domestic violence, single parents and patients with cancer, Parkinson’s disease or Alzheimer’s disease. Pet food distributions take place at the pantry’s location in North Coventry Township at 1055 S. Hanover St., Pottstown, on the first Saturday of each month from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. “It’s a drive-through now. People don’t get out and don’t open their windows, and we load their cars,” Yannessa explained. In addition to pet food, the organization provides spaying, neutering and low-cost vaccination of pantry clients’ pets. Agriculture deputy secretary Cheryl Cook added that nearly one-third of the nation’s food supply depends on pollinators, making bees an essential part of the food supply chain and ecosystem. The Giant Company has also been selected as the first grocery retailer and first Pennsylvania participant to take part in the National Renewable Energy Laboratory’s InSPIRE study, where scientists measure and track the performance of the pollinatorfriendly ground cover for applications to future solar energy projects. In addition to the benefits of the plants, the new solar array coupled with the one currently installed on the roof of the Giant Company headquarters will reduce 4.5 million pounds of carbon dioxide in the environment and generate enough power for the entire building. Native seed mixes provided

by Ernst Conservation Seeds will act as a vegetative solution to beautify the site and provide valuable ecological functions. The Giant Company hopes the native meadow established will create a habitat for pollinators, birds and other small wildlife while improving the quality of the soil beneath it, reducing runoff and creating an attractive backdrop to the site. The field includes more than 20 varieties of wildflowers native to the northeast and central Pennsylvania like butterfly milkweed, mountain mint, blue mistflower and golden Alexander. Robin Ernst, president of Ernst Pollinator Service, explained that as the field matures over the next few years, more than one million pollinator-attracting plants will provide pollen and nectar sources for honey bees and other pollinators, which will in turn pollinate local farm fields. The Giant Company also

announced a new strategic partnership with Planet Bee Foundation. Based in San Francisco, Planet Bee is a nonprofit organization focused on driving awareness for pollinators while creating environmental stewards of all ages, in turn contributing to the well-being of bees. In celebration of the new partnership and National Pollinator Week, the Giant Company announced a $50,000 donation to Planet Bee Foundation. Planet Bee Foundation has constructed the beehives for the pollinator-friendly solar field and will tend to the health of the colonies as the bees provide their essential pollinator services to the local ecosystem. The foundation is also helping the Giant Company develop educational signs that will be installed along the on-campus walking path to drive awareness about the importance of bees to the grocery and agricultural supply chains.

discussion questions, structured craft activities and career exploration for children in kindergarten through fourth grade. Science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education is a student-centered approach that encourages development of skills such as problem solving, curiosity, communication and design thinking. WITF, the Pennsylvania Department of Education and Intermediate Units (IUs) 12, 13 and 15, partnered to provide the summer camp in a format that may spark interest in STEM and its related careers, support different styles of learning, remove obstacles to participation, and meet educational objectives in a rewarding way. The IUs recognized obstacles to participation could include families not having craft resources or broadcast television See WITF pg 7

State Farm To Offer Grants To Nonprofits A grant funding opportunity from State Farm is being offered for nonprofits. State Farm Neighborhood Assist will award $25,000 grants to 40 nonprofit organizations to help fund neighborhood improvement projects. In a recent State Farm research study, one-quarter of respondents said that they are “extremely” or “very” involved in trying to improve their neighborhood and six in 10 said they are trying to improve their neighborhood in some capacity. State Farm Neighborhood Assist aims to be a catalyst for that change. Individuals can submit a cause at www.neighborhoodassist.com. A submission guide is available on the website. State Farm will accept the first 2,000 submissions. The State Farm Review Committee will then narrow the field to the top 200 finalists. Voters will decide which community improvement projects win. The public will have a chance to vote 10 times a day, every day for 10 days, from Wednesday, Sept. 23, through Friday, Oct. 2, for their favorite causes from the list of finalists. The 40 causes that receive the most votes will each win a $25,000 grant. Winners will be announced on Wednesday, Nov. 4. Last year, 163,000 people cast a total of 4.4 million votes in support of their favorite causes, selecting winners from small towns and big cities. Since the program began, State Farm has awarded $8 million in support of more than 300 causes. For more information, readers may visit www.neighborhood assist.com or call their local State Farm agent.

Immaculata Adds Music Therapy,Counseling Program Starting in the fall 2020 semester, Immaculata University is adding a Master of Music Therapy and Counseling to its graduate music offerings. Distinguished from the professional music therapy track, the program will allow students to pursue advanced clinical training toward dual practice, identity and credentialing in music therapy and counseling. A 60-credit track is available for individuals who have an undergraduate degree in music or a related field but who have not yet studied music therapy. A 48-credit track is designed for board-certified music therapists who wish to develop advanced skills in music therapy clinical practice. These students can also pursue a dual master’s degree leading to a counseling-specific accredited degree in clinical mental health counseling.

Both tracks are available through evening and weekend intensive classes on the campus of Immaculata University. The courses in the master’s program will meet the educational requirements necessary for students to be prepared to become licensed professional counselors (LPCs) in Pennsylvania. In addition, students will graduate with strong core competencies within the music therapy field, which will allow them to be clinicians and leaders in the field. The Immaculata University Music Department also offers a Bachelor of Music in music therapy along with a Master of Arts in music therapy. For more information on any of the programs, readers may call 610647-4400, ext. 3490, or email colver@immaculata.edu.

Rite Aid Launches Miracle Balloon Campaign Rite Aid customers can support the lifesaving work of Children’s Miracle Network (CMN) Hospitals during a critical time through Rite Aid’s annual Miracle Balloon fundraising campaign, running through Saturday, Aug. 8. Rite Aid customers can add a donation to their in-store transactions, as well as donate online through Rite Aid’s social media channels. All proceeds will be received by the local community’s children’s hospital to fund critical treatments and health care services and to provide pediatric medical equipment and charitable care for 53 children’s hospitals in the communities that Rite Aid serves. This year will mark the 26th year that Rite Aid has conducted the Miracle Balloon fundraising campaign benefiting CMN Hospitals, raising and donating $95 million in support of children’s hospitals. This year’s effort comes with an unprecedented

pandemic adding urgency to the cause. Children’s hospitals and their systems are actively working to develop COVID-19 treatments and vaccines. At the same time, investments in telehealth service, personal protective equipment and coronavirus testing supplies have escalated hospitals’ expenses while the suspension of elective surgeries and routine procedures is costing hospitals revenue and impacting children in need of care. The Rite Aid Foundation will also direct funds raised through KidCents, its customer-generated charitable giving program dedicated to improving the health and well-being of children living in communities Rite Aid serves, through the duration of the campaign. In April, the foundation also issued a special $250,000 grant to CMN Hospitals to address immediate needs related to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Just days after industries across Pennsylvania entered the yellow phase of reopening, a pair of schools represented Chester County and Delaware County in a statewide student video competition designed to boost the future of local manufacturing. Downingtown STEM Academy and Garnet Valley Middle School were the nominees from the Chester/Delaware County region that competed on June 9 during a “What’s So Cool About Manufacturing - Best of PA” awards event. Normally held in Harrisburg, it was streamed for the first time on YouTube with funding in part from the Chester County Economic Development Council (CCEDC). Twenty-two teams from across the state competed in the contest for first-, second- and third-place awards after winning regional competitions for their two-minute videos with manufacturers on the rewarding career opportunities available in an increasingly technology-driven industry. Each free resource bag contains pencils, a pencil sharpener, crayons, colored pencils, paper plates, construction paper, safety scissors, a glue stick and the curriculum packet with instructions in English and Spanish. During the eight-week camp, families will watch featured PBS KIDS programs like “ Wild Kratts” and “Hero Elementary” on WITF TV to learn about animal habitats, camouflage, mimicry, structure and more. A discussion guide and key vocabulary will help caregivers talk to their children about what they are watching. Then families will work together on an animal habitat design project using the materials in the resource bags. The curriculum also includes introductions to STEM careers for young learners, a suggested book list and links to extension STEM games and activities online. The partners hope that participation in the “Summer

A collection of plastic foam was recently held for residents of the Villages at Hillview in Coatesville. The Villages at Hillview, located just outside of Coatesville, held its fifth annual communitywide collection of plastic foam on May 13. Resident Jean Frank initiated the recycling program, which has grown from two carloads in 2015 to a 28-foot moving van servicing the collection from 500 homes in

the community. The recycled plastic foam was taken to Leolabased Dart Container, which uses a percentage of recycled material to mix with fresh material to form cups, plates, and meat trays. Organizers hope to help reduce the accumulation of plastic foam in landfills and help the environment.
