When Holly Dangerfield, a congregation member at Trinity Assembly of God (AG), learned that many Native American families living on reservations in Arizona had only one toothbrush to share, she immediately began organizing a collection drive for them. Through the end of August, the church is accepting donations of toothbrushes and toothpaste that will be shipped in September to Indian Mobile Mission, which will distribute the collected donations. Toothbrushes and toothpaste can be dropped off in the church foyer during office hours on Mondays through Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., on Sundays during the 10 a.m. worship service and on Wednesdays during the
6:30 p.m. Bible study. Donations can also be placed at any time in the food collection bins located at the church entrance. Volunteers will check the bins on a regular basis. Dangerfield, who has been a congregation member at Trinity Ag for 30 years, is also involved with Joseph’s Closet, the church’s food outreach ministry. She explained that she has had an interest in Native American causes since she was in high school. “It bothered me how they have been treated, and it never left my heart,” she said. “I wanted to help, and I didn’t know how. Years later, I was in the Mustard Seed, which was a Christian bookstore, and I overheard a few people talking about missionaries in Arizona who helped Native Americans.” See Donations pg 5

“It gives us a little bit of purpose in the tragedy,” said Jill Hardy when describing the fundraising motorcycle ride that is held annually in honor of her son, Brandon, who was killed in action in 2006 at the age of 25, while a member of the United States Marine Corps. This year, the 14th annual Cpl. Brandon Hardy Memorial Ride will be held on Saturday, July 20, beginning and ending at the Gap Fire Hall, 802 Pequea Ave., Gap. Registration will be held from 7:30 to 8:45 a.m.; coffee and doughnuts will be available. The ride will leave promptly at 9 a.m. and return at approximately 1 p.m., when lunch will be served. A donation fee will be charged per rider, which is payable on the day of the event. Preregistration is not required. Nonriders are also invited to participate in the lunch only by paying the registration fee. All proceeds will benefit the Cpl. Brandon M. Hardy Memorial Scholarship Fund. Brandon, a graduate of the Octorara Area School District, was killed in 2006 in Al Anbar, Iraq. “Warren (Brandon’s father) and I decided the day we got the terrible news that we needed to honor Brandon and glorify God through this tragedy,” said Jill, who is the school board and superintendent secretary for the Octorara Area School District. “We do that by giving $1,000 scholarships to graduating seniors who are entering the military. To date, we have awarded $112,000 in scholarships. I also do speaking engagements to tell Brandon’s story so others can understand his sacrifice.” The ride, which will take place rain or

shine, will leave Gap Fire Hall and proceed down Route 30 to Route 113 to Route 100 to the Chester Springs Harley-Davidson, where participants will be treated to soft pretzels and water. From there, the ride will proceed to Route 82, then to Route 322 and then to Route 10. “When we come through Parkesburg and Cochranville, the fire companies are out with flags flying and sirens blaring. It is a bittersweet tribute to their hometown hero,” Jill said. “Our next stop is Herr Foods Visitor Center, where they open the center for us and have water and snacks. From there, we go through Little Britain, Quarryville and Nickel Mines past Brandon’s grave, where the riders go slowly in tribute to Brandon.” The 107-mile ride will end back at Gap Fire Hall, where the riders will be given a lunch of pulled pork, chicken barbecue, homemade baked beans, potato salad and dessert. Jill noted that corporate sponsors contribute to the ride and that local fire companies and police departments are on hand to ensure the riders’ safety. Residents of area neighborhoods are welcome to cheer on the riders as they pass by. “People cheer when we leave Gap. We come through Parkesburg around 11:15 a.m. and Cochranville close to 11:30 a.m.,” Jill noted. “I speak to the Lionville Middle School Patriots Club, and every year there are a few teachers and students who come out and wave their flags when we go down Route 113.” She noted that the ride has grown through the years. “The first year there were 80 bikes; we have had as many as 280 bikes. We usually raise between $8,000 and $10,000,” said Jill, adding that Brandon’s fellow service members travel from as far away as Spokane, Wash., and Tulsa, Okla., to join the ride. The scholarships are intended to finance the cost of items that are not provided by the military. “The purpose is to help other men and women who are carrying Brandon’s torch,” said Jill. “They can use the (scholarship money) for things the military requires but doesn’t supply or use it to come home to visit their family. They don’t get free trips home. If it gets them home one time, it’s worth it.” For more information about Brandon and the ride, readers may visit at www.cplbrandonhardy.com. Pictured on front:

The Chester County Fund for Women and Girls (CCFWG) recently awarded $217,000 in grants to 27 nonprofit organizations that serve the needs of women and girls throughout Chester County. Nearly 100 community members, grantee partners and CCFWG board and committee members gathered at the General Warren Inne on June 18 for CCFWG’s 2019 Grants Celebration to honor the hard work and dedication of this year’s grantees. Representatives from three of the organizations spoke about the bravery of the women and girls they serve. Among the speakers was Christine Zaccarelli, CEO of The Crime Victims’ Center of Chester County Inc. Jill Laufenberg, executive director of Wings for Success, an organization that provides clothing and accessories to women re-entering the work force, shared a heartwarming story from a client who received free styling services and a renewed sense of confidence in preparation for a job interview. Lisa Gall and Amy Perez of Mighty Writers spoke about how the Kennett Square community has embraced their efforts to establish new programming aimed at helping girls in need write with clarity and grow in confidence. For the second year in a row, CCFWG awarded two-year sustained funding grants
recommendation of an advisory committee composed of community members who review grant applications submitted by nonprofit agencies. Members of this year’s Grants Allocation Committee were Karen Brindisi, Miguel Ceballos, Maxine Cuffe, Joanne Curley, Terri Ann DiJulio, Olivia Diming, Caryn Fallon, Connie Fogarty, Sara Hejazi, Bill Morrow, Angie Poulin, Deepak Rajpal, Glen Reyburn, Brittney Richardson, Kayleigh Streit, Yolanda Van de Krol and Angel VanBennekom. Also involved in the process are members of the Girls Advisory Board (GAB). A nationally recognized girls’ grantmaking program, GAB provides local high school girls entering 10th or 11th grade with an opportunity to learn firsthand about various needs in their communities. Over the past 15 years, GAB has awarded grants to agencies that target the needs of women and girls facing issues
to three Chester County organizations: Mighty Writers, YoungMoms and The Clinic. Additional funding was awarded through “Moving Her Forward” Impact Grants, a grantmaking program established last year to focus on quick responses to pressing needs in the community. Impact Grants were also awarded. The Bianca Nikol Merge With Mercy Foundation received $4,500 to launch a local grief support group for family members of victims lost to acts of violence. Black Women of Chester County in Action received $8,000 to support leadership development and recruitment, as well as promote self-care through its already established Aya Health Project. Chester County OIC was awarded $5,000 to implement changes to its Nurse Aide Training Program to better set students up for career advancement in the field. The Chester County Women’s Commission received $2,500 to fund a survey about sexual harassment and assault in Chester County workplaces. To date, CCFWG has directed more than $3.2 million to 72 nonprofit organizations that address needs such as homelessness, domestic violence and women’s health. Through an inclusive and community-driven process, CCFWG strives to lead and unite the community through philanthropy and advocacy to ensure that women and girls have resources and opportunities to thrive. The grants are awarded based on the

Local groups are invited to conduct a book drive for LLL. There is a special need for picture books and books in Spanish and other languages. “The third-grade class at Octorara Elementary School did a book drive for us two years ago. The teacher, Tammy Anthony, found out about (the LLL) because a couple of students brought in books that had our sticker on the front. (Some of the students said) it was the only book they had at home,” said Rengert. Financial donations are also needed to ship books to laundromats in other states. Recently, LLL was granted a $500 Community Champions Grant from Constellation, an Exelon company. Additionally, the Chester County Chapter of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) gave the LLL a donation of $800, which was raised by placing spare change in piggy banks. AAUW members were given plain white ceramic piggy banks and decorated them as part of the effort. Rengert is pleased with how the LLL program has grown. She emphasized that books are beneficial to young learners, citing a study appearing in the April 2019 issue of Pediatrics. “Recently the American Academy of Pediatrics documented that actual books have a significantly greater developmental benefit to children in comparison to books read to them or from an electronic screen,” she stated. For more information about the LLL or to volunteer or learn how to hold a book drive, individuals should email Rengert at laundromatlibrary@gmail.com. Laundromat owners willing to offer space for a box of books should also contact Rengert. More information about the organization is also available at www.facebook.com/Laudromat LibraryLeague.

boxes in local laundromats with the permission of the business owners. Each book has a sticker that instructs, “Read It. Love It. Pass It On.” Since its inception, the LLL has placed more than 72,000 children’s books in close to 150 laundromats primarily in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware, but also in 11 other states. To locate a participating laundromat where a library is set up, individuals may visit www.laundromatlibraryleague.org and click on “Where You Will Find Us” for an interactive map of locations. “A book icon is (available) for each of our sites and up pops the name of the site and the address,” explained Chester County resident Arlene Rengert, LLL president and co-founder. Area laundromats where libraries are located include Parkesburg Laundry, 650 Main St., Parkesburg; Caln Laundromat, 1834 E. Lincoln Highway, Coatesville; Rainbow Laundromat, 891 W. Lincoln Highway, Coatesville; Christiana Laundromat, 150 Water St., Christiana; Sundance Laundromat, 510 E. Main St., New Holland; and the Blue Spot Laundry, 2981 Lincoln Highway, Sadsburyville. “It started with the Poly Clean in West Chester. One of us knew the owner enough to ask permission (to start a library),” Rengert recalled. “We were largely in West Chester and Kennett Square, and then gradually (the effort grew) just by word of mouth.” She noted that even more people learned about the libraries via the internet. She said that every effort is being made to open up more libraries. “When we started in 2014, we actually thought the hardest thing would be to get books. But the hardest thing is to reach more laundromat owners,” Rengert said.

There is no admission fee for the evening bonfire and music, but organizers ask each attendee age 6 and up to make a minimum donation at the check-in tent for Sadsburyville Fire Company No. 1 for managing the bonfire and co-hosting the celebration. At 7:30 p.m., Lance Castle will offer a welcome and a toast, and the lighting of the bonfire will be held. From 8 to 11 p.m., music will be provided by the Holts. Tickets for a giveaway drawing to benefit the fire company will be sold, with the last chance to purchase tickets coming at 9 p.m. The drawing will be held at 10 p.m. Attendees should bring a valid picture ID, as it may be requested at check-in. Discounts will also be offered. For more information about the celebration, readers may call the winery at 610-857-5566 or visit www.black walnutwinery.com.
School bus drivers from across Pennsylvania traveled to State College for the 43rd annual State School Bus Driver Safety Competition. The competition was held on June 21 and 22 on the grounds of the Mount Nittany Elementary and Middle School. The total number of drivers in this year’s competition reached 95, with 84 in the conventional category and 11 driving in the transit division. Drivers and competition judges arrived on Friday evening for an orientation and the written examination, which was developed for the competition by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation. On Saturday morning, the drivers competed in the skills portion of the competition, which included a physical and verbal bus inspection, height judgment, diminishing clearance, simulated bus stop, railroad crossings, backing up, and curb line parking. Four drivers were selected to represent Pennsylvania at the International School Bus Safety Competition, which is slated for Sunday, July 21, in Austin, Texas. They are Ruth DelVecchio and Larry Hannon Jr. in the Conventional Bus Category and Cheryl Vogelsang and Jim O’Toole in the Transit Bus Category.
DelVecchio drives for Krapf School Bus, West Chester, and is a resident of Downingtown. She finished in first place at the state competition in 2015 and has competed in a total of 10 state competitions. This will be her second trip to the international competition. Hannon is a driver for the Centennial School District in Bucks County and a resident of Warminster. He has competed in six state competitions and has achieved the highest written score at the state event in 2015, 2017, and 2018. This will be his first trip to the international competition. Vogelsang drives for On the Go Kids located in Downingtown and is a resident of Downingtown. She has participated in numerous state competitions and earned a second-place finish in 2017. This will be her eighth time competing at the international competition. O’Toole is a driver for the School District of Haverford Township in Delaware County and a resident of Havertown. He has competed in more than 11 state competition, and this will be his second trip to the international competition. The complete results of this year’s state competition can be found on the PSBA website at www.paschoolbus.org.

In addition to seeking fosters and folks ready to adopt, the new rescue is in need of volunteers, as well as donations. The wish list of items includes kitten food (wet and dry); adult cat food (dry); cat litter; old, used or new towels, sheets and blankets; dog crates (all sizes); cleaning supplies; paper towels; plastic shopping bags; leashes and collars; and pet beds. “I am a one-woman army and can always use the help. Even liking our Facebook page and sharing our adoptable animals (on social media) can make a huge difference in finding them homes,” Schiller said, adding, “This is more than just my passion; it’s a lifestyle. COPE from pg 1
in April 2018 and originally piloted in Chester County and Brandywine hospitals, the COPE service now reaches all five county hospitals, and the program’s effectiveness in its first year has resulted in referrals for substance use disorder treatment services for two out of three individuals served by the COPE program. The $50,000 donation by the commissioners comes from the proceeds of the Chester County Color 5K in November 2018, which raised funds specifically to help Chester County combat the opioid and heroin crisis. In the three years that the Color 5K has taken place, more than $110,000 has been raised to fund “warm handoff” efforts in hospital emergency rooms that have supported the COPE program. Developed by the Chester County Department of Drug and Alcohol Services with input from the county’s Drug Overdose Prevention Task Force, the COPE program ensures opioid overdose survivors being treated in local emergency departments are personally encouraged to enter treatment. A on-call Engagement Team provides personal support 24/7 for overdose survivors and their family and friends while they are in the hospital emergency department, as well as following discharge from the ER. COPE also provides overdose prevention information and outreach to first responders and hospital staff. In addition to developing and implementing the COPE program, Chester County continues to address the many different aspects of the opioid and heroin crisis through its Overdose Prevention Task Force. The county created a task force, which takes a multidisciplinary approach that includes the arrest and prosecution of drug dealers, moving those suffering from addiction into treatment and counseling, educating children and their parents through prevention programming, taking drugs off the streets through the drop box initiative, and working with doctors and health care providers on opioid prescribing practices. This year’s Color 5K will be held on Saturday, Oct. 5, in West Chester. For information on sponsorship opportunities and registration for the 2019 Chester County Color 5K, readers may visit www.chesco.org/color5K. For details on Chester County’s Overdose Prevention Task Force, readers may visit www.stopod chesco.org.
In another move by Chester County to battle the opioid and heroin crisis, Commissioners Michelle Kichline, Kathi Cozzone, and Terence Farrell recently presented a check for $50,000 to boost funds for the county’s Community Outreach and Prevention Education (COPE) program. Introduced

I do have an application that people need to complete. I require vet references and personal references, which is part of the application process.” Photos of animals ready for adoption can be seen on the Facebook page. Among those seeking a forever home is Brandon, a 5-year-old male shih tzu. “He is very friendly and loves people and other dogs,” noted Schiller. “He is easygoing and would be suitable for an older person or couple. He is fully vetted - neutered, vaccinated, etc.”
