Festival To Offer Country
Music At Its Best “(In 2019, performer) Brad Paisley said, ‘I don’t know where I am, but I love it here.’”
BY FRANCINE FULTON After an absence in 2020 because of the pandemic, Citadel Country Spirit USA will return on Friday, Aug. 27, to Sunday Aug. 29, at the Ludwig’s Corner Horse Show Grounds. This year’s headliners are Brantley Gilbert, Miranda Lambert and Chris Young.
The show will have a limited capacity this year, and a few changes will be made to the site, ensuring that those who choose to socially distance may do so while still seeing the show. Previously purchased three-day passes, single-day tickets and parking upgrades from 2020 will be honored for the 2021 dates. Tickets for the festival are on sale now. To purchase tickets, visit www.countryspirit usa.com or call 800-5143849. A portion of all ticket sales will be donated to Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), a Children’s Miracle Network Hospital.
The three-day festival, hosted by the Chester County Conference & Visitors Bureau (CVB), will feature 20 country music acts performing live music on two stages - 14 nationally recognized artists on the GMC Sierra Stage and up-and-comers on the Citadel Rising Star Stage. Gilbert will headline on Aug. 27. Justin Moore, Rodney Atkins, RaeLynn and Muscadine Bloodline will also perform. Lambert will headline on Aug. 28. Other performers will include Brett Young, Carly Pearce, Jon Langston and Niko Moon. Young will headline on Aug. 29. Also featured will be Josh Turner, Scotty McCreery and Lindsay Ell. Festival goers will experience a professionally presented show designed to showcase the nationally known musical acts. “It’s a high-level production,” said Nina Kelly, CVB director of marketing and communications. “Impact Entertainment, the

beverage vendors on-site, and sponsors will offer booths with various Western-themed activities. “There might be a games area, a mechanical bull and some different things set up,” said Kelly, noting that the event will be enjoyable even for those who are not die-hard country music fans. “The whole experience is super-fun. There is a lot of music and there is a festival atmosphere.”
She noted that organizers will begin setting up the venue earlier in the week. “There is a big stage they build out, and as (the date) moves closer, the talent brings huge buses and tractor-trailers with all their equipment. It is mind-boggling what goes into it,” said Kelly.
She said that some people are impressed that Chester County is able to attract such big stars in country music. “We are internationally known because of Longwood Gardens, but this area is a little less well known, but equally as fabulous,” Kelly said.
The GPS address for the event is 5 Nantmeal Road, Glenmoore. Gates will open at noon each day. Clean Energy Tour Seeks Entries From Chester County Those who utilize solar energy at their home or business are invited to become part of the Chester County Clean Energy Tour. This year’s tour will be virtual, and those who visit the tour website will be able to learn about solar energy and its various uses. Chester County’s event will be part of the 26th annual National Solar Tour, presented by the American Solar Energy Society, which showcases solar-powered homes and buildings across the nation. “We are inviting businesses large and small, schools and houses of worship to showcase what we can do in our own community to harness free energy from the sun to generate electricity, warm and cool our buildings, heat water and (reduce) monthly utility bills,” said Nora Ziegler, a retired public school teacher and a Chester County resident who is coordinating the Chester County portion of the Clean Energy Tour. She noted that the tour was held in person in 2019, but that it moved to a virtual format in 2020 because of the pandemic. Organizers Celebra ti 33 Yea ng In Businrs ess

decided to make this year’s tour virtual as well. “2020 was the first time that the solar tour had ever (gone virtual). We did have about 15 homes last year, but we are working hard to get other types of buildings this year,” said Ziegler. Previous years have highlighted Camphill Village Kimberton Hills, whose solar system powers several of its buildings, including its café. Several municipal facilities were on the tour in 2019, including those in Uwchlan Township, which used state incentives to install electric vehicle charging stations at its township office. In southern Chester County, the tour included two large solar installations at Longwood Gardens and Marlboro Mushrooms. “Last year, we (highlighted) a family business - Lani Ice in Ludwigs Corner, which is solar powered,” said Ziegler. Lani Ice offers smoothies, shaved ice other products from its solar-powered trailer. Those interested in participating on the tour will be asked to submit photos and a three-minute video about their use of solar power. Technical help will be
provided if needed. This year, a live, in-person event at the West Vincent Community Day on Saturday, Sept. 25, will serve as the kickoff to the Chester County Clean Energy Tour. The virtual tour, with videos and photo presentations, will be available at www.national solartour.org, starting on Saturday, Oct. 2. “Chester County ranks second in solar installations in the state,” Ziegler pointed out. “For the last two years, we have led the nation in local clean energy open houses. People who are interested in the concept and don’t know that much about it (are encouraged to participate). Maybe they are thinking about using solar at their homes.” Those interested in showcasing their use of solar power in the tour are asked to complete an interest form at www.nationalsolartour. org. The Clean Energy Tour is free and open to the public, and participating sites also do not have to pay a fee. For more details, contact Ziegler at noraziegler@ me.com.

Loving Pennsylvania
BY FRANCINE FULTON
One of the best things about living in Pennsylvania is that we get to experience all four seasons. Sometimes, however, they occur nearly simultaneously. In June, when summer began, the air in the morning was crisp and cool, so much so that a sweatshirt or sweater was required. About a week later, we hit temperatures in the high 90s. And then my two least favorite words in the English language: oppressive humidity. Extreme weather fluctuations are common in Pennsylvania. Who remembers not too many years ago when we experienced a sudden snowstorm on Halloween? Conversely, I remember decorating the Christmas tree when the temperature outside was in the 70s. And then there was an Easter morning dusting of snow. One of my favorite videos that has been shared on Facebook features a man from Pennsylvania who opens his front door to see a beautiful, warm and sunny spring day. He runs back inside, dons a pair of shorts, his favorite T-shirt and a pair of flip-flops. Minutes later, he returns to that same front door only to find that the ground is covered with snow.
A discussion about Pennsylvania would not be complete without mentioning all the foods that are distinctive to this neck of the woods. I have friends who live in the South, namely Georgia, and they have not heard of some of the foods that we enjoy, such as Lebanon bologna and shoo-fly pie. Other Pennsylvanian foods include whoopie pies, scrapple, chowchow, pickled cabbage, soft pretzels, birch beer, chicken corn soup, chicken potpie, Philly cheesesteaks, apple butter, funnel cake, apple dumplings and fastnachts, as well as hoagies. Those from outside the state also have no idea about the great Sheetz vs. Wawa debate that divides all of us who frequent convenience stores to purchase meals. There is also what is known as Pennsylvania jargon or slang. For example, the Philadelphia Eagles are called “The Birds” and soft-cooked over-easy eggs are called “dippy eggs.” Many of us don’t visit New Jersey beaches in the summer; we go “down the shore.” Pennsylvania is also divided according to its eastern and western residents. There are intense rivalries between the sports teams from Pittsburgh and the teams from Philadelphia. Plus, those who

live in the western part of the state drink pop; we drink soda. Even though the state is known for its potholes, the tolls on the PA Turnpike and its not-so-nice fans at professional sporting events, do not miss an opportunity to experience all that the state has to offer. Pennsylvania includes many state parks and historic landmarks. We have the Pocono Mountains and hundreds of lakes and rivers and woodlands to enjoy. Local theaters are back open, as are concert and sports venues. PA is also home to the city of Philadelphia, where freedom was born. One piece of advice for the summer: If you are dining outdoors with a soda and a hoagie from either Wawa or Sheetz, if you are walking along the beach down the shore or if you make a road trip westward to watch the Phillies play the Pirates, don’t forget to keep your sweater or sweatshirt nearby.
