Joseph’s People Offers Free Unemployment Guide By Francine Fulton
Joseph’s People, a nonprofit organization that provides support, guidance and job counseling services to the unemployed, is now offering a free guide for all who have lost their job. Titled “The Journey,” the document is available at www.josephspeople.org. The availability of “The Journey” was announced by Cheryl Spaulding, president emeritus, who founded Joseph’s People in 1995. “‘The Journey’ is our 92-page guide to finding a new job and restoring your life after job loss,” Spaulding said. “The book has been the backbone of Joseph’s People for more than 15 years and helped literally thousands of people. Until just a few months ago, the only way to obtain it was to become a member of Joseph’s People by joining one of our groups.”

More than 200 years ago, mile markers were placed along the Philadelphia and Lancaster Turnpike, now known as Lincoln Highway. The markers were used to indicate the distances between Philadelphia and Lancaster. As part of an effort to return the historic mile makers to their original places, members of the Old Caln Historical Society (OCHS), along with Caln Township Public Works Department workers, recently put mile marker 32 back in its rightful place. The marker, which reads “32 M TO P,” meaning “32 miles to Philadelphia,” is now believed to be in its original location across from the Shops at Wedgewood on Lincoln Highway. The group gathered on July 11 to place the marker, which was turned over to Caln Township by a local resident. It

She said that once it was decided to make the booklet free to everyone, it was updated and reworked. “(Unemployed people) are from all over the United States,” noted Spaulding. “The principles that it covers are germane to anyone who loses their job, no matter where they are.” Different sections of the document were written by people from the community, such as mental health professionals. “We have a lot of experts from the community who volunteered their time to write sections. It took almost a year to get it updated,” Spaulding noted. Spaulding said that the newly unemployed or those who had never lost a job before can particularly benefit from the book. “It covers mental health issues, financial issues and how to network. People don’t think about all that, but it’s part of the process,” she said. See Joseph’s People pg 7

is estimated that the stone marker is at least 225 years old. Brenda Porter, who has done extensive research on the markers, said she and fellow OCHS member Lois Demchak were talking about the mile markers, many of which are missing. “Lois heard that someone had turned (mile marker 32) in to the township building and it was waiting for someone to put it back,” Porter said. Porter had to receive permission to have the marker set back in place from the township, as well PennDOT, which owns the property where the marker was set. A total of 62 markers were placed on the Philadelphia and Lancaster Turnpike by the Pennsylvania Highway Commission from 1794 to 1796 when it operated as a toll road. POINT closes. There is a schedule of bus transportation within a 5-mile radius of The POINT that reaches in different directions each day so that youngsters in Atglen, Christiana, Gap and Coatesville areas can visit The POINT. The POINT has been able to make all renovations to its Parkesburg property without taking out a loan. The hope is to complete the final part of the expansion, which is a $100,000 project, with the help of donations. “The vision is what we’ve always intended. It’s coming together. We’ll be able to address the needs of more and more young people throughout the year by being able to have outdoor facilities for them to play,” Walton said. “At the end of this project, we’ll have a fully functional indoor-outdoor facility serving the needs of our community.” For more information about The POINT, located at 700 Main St., Parkesburg, readers may call 610-857-3393 or visit www.parkesburgpoint.com or www.facebook.com/parkesburg.point. There is also a workshop where young people can learn woodworking and electrical repair. They can even learn bicycle repair using donated bikes and they get to keep their completed project. “We have volunteers come in who are part of the industry that teach the kids. We want kids to see they can do things with their hands,” facilities manager Bud Herman said. “We’re not really interested in making (them) experts in these areas, but what we want to do is get these kids interested so they will go to the high school tech classes and the tech schools and further their education.” The final phase of construction is underway, with work in progress on the skatepark where concrete moguls, ramps and rails will provide challenges and fun for all levels of skateboard riders. The skatepark and the adjoining basketball court will be fenced with access available only through the main building of The POINT. The skatepark is being named in memory of John Gillen, a young man from the community who died from an accidental overdose at the age of 21 in July 2011. “John was a student here at The POINT. He was a really great kid who always worked with other students and helped the younger ones learn to skate. Skaters would credit him with giving them their first experience and teaching them to skate,” Walton said. Transportation is available to take all youngsters home each evening after The

The Parkesburg POINT youth center is nearing the completion of its final expansion stage. The project, which will complete the complex, includes the installation of a new outdoor skatepark and basketball court, as well as the repaving of the large parking lot and the addition of buffer landscaping. “We realized it would be several phases before we could get it to where we wanted it for our program,” said Dwayne Walton, executive director of The POINT. “Now we’re at the place where we want to finalize everything.” The POINT offers boys and girls ages 8 to 18 a free, safe place to go in a faithbased environment. So far, The POINT has renovated its main building, creating welcoming spaces in which children can enjoy games, video gaming, sports and academics. The facility includes a full-size gym, a kitchen, a dining area and offices. With the coming of the new outdoor skatepark, the indoor skatepark is being repurposed for gymnastics and ninja training. “We (originally) put that (indoor skatepark) in because we couldn’t afford an outdoor one. An outdoor skatepark draws so many more students and also allows for more capable skaters. The indoor (one) was more for younger kids,” Walton said. Across the parking lot, the building that once housed a strip of shops now contains a chapel, a boxing training gym and classrooms

The road was used by those in covered wagons traveling west, as well as local farmers. “One side of the road with the rough gravel was for carts that were hauling fruits and vegetables into Philadelphia to sell them. Fellowship Hall from pg 1 he said. “Due to regulations, we had to (construct) a new building. The church credits local firefighters for their efforts. Since the blaze was brought under control quickly, the church building was spared. On Sept. 11, 2016, the church held a service of appreciation for local firefighters, police officers and other first responders to thank them for their service. The new fellowship hall, which is handicapped-accessible, will be used for the church’s Sunday school program, which is offered at 9:30 a.m. Coffee and other refreshments are available. “It has a big, open area, which we will use for fellowship and Sunday school, and it is also a mini-gym, said Haye. “Our Sunday school uses round tables to
allow people to connect and get to know each other. (The building also has) first-floor restrooms, a mini-kitchenette and a classroom for music lessons. Soon after the fire, church members formed a building committee, and planning for the new construction began in the spring of 2017. The church relied on donations, fundraising activities and a small insurance settlement to finance the cost of the new building. “ We first broke ground on Easter 2018, but we had to a lot of site work before the building started, Haye noted. He said that the large fellowship hall will provide a venue for vacation Bible school each July, along with other church programs.
“For (the recent) vacation Bible school, we had over 80 kids and it was a wonderful time but a little crowded, Haye said. “With this building we’ll be able to use it for kids’ programs throughout the year. “It’s a huge upgrade for us, he added. “It will open a new avenue for us ministry-wise; we’re excited about that. Victory Baptist Church is located at 531 E. Uwchlan Ave. (Route 113), Chester Springs. Sunday school is held at 9:30 a.m., followed by the morning worship service at 10:45 a.m. The church also offers a Sunday evening service at 6 p.m. For more information, readers may call 610-594-8939 or visit www.facebook.com/VBCChester Springs or www.vbc-pa.org.

Joseph’s People from pg 1 The first section of the booklet covers the gamut of emotions that people may experience when losing their jobs, such as shock, denial, anger and depression, which eventually can lead to acceptance and action. There is also a section devoted to maintaining physical and emotional wellbeing when unemployed. One section titled “The Job Search Process” covers resume writing and how to write a cover letter. It also offers tips on job interview skills. Also covered are various websites used during internet job searches, as well as the importance of networking at local job fairs. Interspersed throughout the booklet are inspirational quotes, prayers and passages from Scripture. The booklet concludes with a section about when a person finally is able to return to work, asking him or her to reflect on the journey and think about what they learned during the experience. “There is absolutely no faith-based guide like this that I am aware of anywhere,” Spaulding commented. “It takes a person from the day they lose their job through to a new position. It helps them to look at issues before they become problems.” Spaulding pointed out that people may read the document online, print it out in its entirely or just print the section that applies to their needs. “This is a really important resource for anyone in trouble because of job loss,” she said. “We hope by opening this up to all, we can help many more people.” Joseph’s People was founded at St. Joseph Church in Downingtown. It is named after Joseph, the carpenter father of Jesus, who is the patron saint of workers. The organization is completely run by volunteers, and all services are offered free of charge. Joseph’s People has 11 chapters in the Philadelphia area and one in Pittsburgh. In addition to the chapter at St. Joseph’s Church, the Chester County chapters meet at St. Elizabeth Parish in Uwchlan and at Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church in West Grove. In Berks County, a Joseph’s People chapter meets at St. Catherine’s of Siena in Reading. For more information, readers may visit the website, email contactus@josephs people.org or call the helpline at 610-873-7117.

Geisinger Announces New Partnership Geisinger has announced its has formed a partnership with Medial EarlySign, which creates machine learning-based solutions to aid in early detection and prevention of high-burden diseases. Medical EarlySign is partnering with Geisinger and its Steele Institute for Health Innovation to develop and deploy a suite of machine learning-based solutions to identify individuals at risk for a range of chronic and high-burden diseases. Partnering with Geisinger’s Steele Institute for Health Innovation, EarlySign’s LGI-Flag solution will be deployed to help health care practitioners identify patients who are at risk for significant lower GI disorders. LGI-Flag is an advanced software solution that analyzes medical data, including changes in routine blood tests, to flag those who will benefit from further evaluation. Reflecting the Steele Institute’s efforts to transform health care delivery by implementing solutions that improve health, patient experience, care delivery and affordability, the partnership will also explore additional opportunities to benefit patients and their care providers. LGI-Flag has been used in health care systems around the world since 2015 to identify patients at risk for lower GI disorders associated with chronic occult bleeding. The technology will form the basis for Geisinger and EarlySign to address similar opportunities with other acute and chronic diseases. The partnership will make use of Geisinger’s infrastructure, data assets and care teams.
