Providing help and information to local senior citizens was the goal of the program on July 29 at the Coatesville Area Senior Center (CASC). During the day, seniors were able to sign up for the Chester County Food Bank’s Senior Food Box Program and were given a voucher to purchase fresh produce on-site. The day also included a free fan distribution and complimentary hamburgers, hot dogs and beverages provided by CASC. The event was presented by CASC, the Brandywine Health Foundation, the Chester County Food Bank (CCFB) and PECO, which partnered together to distribute 100 fans to local residents. The fans were given to lowincome residents, with the primary distribution to seniors. “The priority is to keep our older folks cool,” said George Ramon, CASC

Claudia Rose-Muir, CCFB’s direct distribution program manager, was on hand to screen recipients for eligibility in the Senior Food Box Program. When his sister’s field hockey team was without a goalie, Toby Peck, at the age of 9, stepped in as a substitute. After that experience, Toby has been playing the game ever since and was recently named to the United States Men’s Junior National Indoor Field Hockey Team. Although field hockey is more commonly a women’s sport in the United States, the men’s national team is currently ranked 24th in the world, according to Intentional Hockey Federation (FIH) World Rankings. Toby, 15, who will be a sophomore this fall at Downingtown High School West (DHSW), was named to the junior national team after taking part in tryouts in March at The Training Center in Pottstown, which were held by USA Field Hockey. Village Of Sadsburyville from pg 1 By Marcella Peyre-Ferry

The community is invited to take a tour of historic Sadsburyville without having to brave the August heat. As part of Chester County’s Town Tours and Village Walks program, a special supper lecture and armchair tour will take place on Thursday, Aug. 15, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Historic Yellow Springs, 1685 Art School Road, Chester Springs. Registration will begin at 5:30 p.m. The program will feature photographs and a presentation by Dick Dague, president of the Sadsbury Township Historical Society. “I already had a slideshow that I presented to the township called ‘Historic Buildings in Sadsbury Township.’ I’ve taken the slideshow I already had and eliminated everything that was not Sadsburyville,” Dague said. “I parked my car at the township building and walked from one end of Sadsburyville to the other and back.” Located on U.S. Business Route 30 about 5 miles west of Coatesville, the settlement that would become Sadsburyville began as early as 1729. The area experienced growth in 1794 when the first macadamized road in the country was laid through the settlement and the Sadsbury Hotel became a welcome stop for turnpike travelers. Early settlers were a mixture of Friends from England and Scotch-Irish Presbyterians. Some believe that Sadsburyville may have been named for Sudbury in the county of Suffolk, England. Those who attend the upcoming program will see images and

“Kathy (Manidis, pool manager) said that 7,000 (people) come to the pool each year to swim,” said Sister Brenda McHugh, center director. “So many kids have grown up learning to swim here.” Sister Brenda reported that on the day of the festival, the tour of the Langoma mansion will be new and improved. Those who have toured the building before will learn new information about the building, which has 183 windows, 20 fireplaces and 22 bathrooms. The home’s attractions include staircases made of marble, onyx and alabaster and a stained-glass window made of Tiffany glass. “Sister Kathy has been doing so much research for the tour. She has gone to the historical society and found additional facts in our archives,” Sister Brenda said. “We will have people dressed in period costumes. Mrs. Potts will greet people at the door, and there will be an opening PowerPoint personation while people are waiting. It’s a lot of fun and interesting facts. The tour is rerouted and rewritten with all kinds of additional facts.” A fee will be charged to tour the mansion. St. Mary of Providence is located at 227 Isabella Road, Elverson. For more information or to rent a vendor space by Thursday, Aug. 8, readers may call 610-942-4166. More information can be found at www.stmaryofprov-pa.org or by searching for “St Mary of Providence Center” on Facebook. The festival will take place rain or shine. In addition to the majestic Langoma mansion at St. Mary of Providence Retreat Center in Elverson, which was built in 1894 by the Potts family of local ironmasters, the site includes a heated indoor swimming pool that is open to the public for swim lessons, lap swimming and family swims. To help maintain the pool, a festival fundraiser, “Save Our Pool,” has been set for Saturday, Aug. 10, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the retreat center. The festival will feature an outdoor barbecue and vendors offering crafts and yard sale items, as well as tours of the historic mansion. Visitors will also be able to swim in the pool. All proceeds will be used for the pool’s re-roofing and to restore air circulation in the pool, which goes from 3 to 9 feet in depth. The pool is located behind the Langoma mansion. The Daughters of St. Mary of Providence acquired the mansion in 1948 to be used as a training and education center for mentally challenged children. The pool was built in the 1970s for the children to use for swimming and therapy. In 1984, the youngsters were transferred to a new complex built by the Diocese of Philadelphia in Springfield, Delaware County. The property, including the pool, was given a new purpose as a retreat center and senior living facility. Pool memberships are available, or people can pay an admission fee per visit. Since the center is nonprofit, all proceeds from admission fees are put into the pool’s upkeep and maintenance.

hard plastic. It’s not a puck and it’s not bouncy. We play on a field, but Europeans call it a pitch. It is Astroturf for the most part, but sometimes the high schools have football turf or real grass (playing fields).” He said being a goaltender involves having the ability to stop a ball that is coming toward him at a very fast clip. “It was scary at the beginning, but once you realize you have all these pads on, it doesn’t affect me that much,” Toby stated. “I still duck if a ball is coming at my head because it’s instinctive, but if there is a body shot to my torso or arms, I deflect.” This summer, in addition to a part-time job, Toby is preparing for the fall hockey season by working out at the gym and playing in local practice games. His goal is to one day play for the U.S. National Men’s Field Hockey Team.

plays internationally and in the annual Pan Am indoor games,” explained Toby’s mother, Liz. “They will have opportunities to play here in the States most likely against older, higher skilled girls’ teams because boys’ field hockey is not built up enough yet in the U.S. to give them competitive play.” Currently, the junior team practices one weekend a month at The Training Center since the boys come from many East Coast states and one player is from California. Toby explained how his untraditional career in field hockey came about. “My twin sister, Kari, used to play field hockey for the United Field Hockey Club at USTC (the United Sports Training Center),” he said. “The team (at the time) did not have a goalkeeper. I offered, and the coach said, ‘Bring him in.’ I did it and fell in love with it and played the entire season.” Toby said that that the spectators were not accustomed to seeing a male goalkeeper on a girls’ team. “It’s unheard of,” he stated. “A lot of people were surprised when I took my helmet off and they saw it wasn’t a girl.” Toby is currently a practice player on DHSW’s varsity field hockey team but does not play during games because boys are

The theft of 15 paintings, worth millions of dollars, from the estate of world famous artist Andrew Wyeth is the subject of a true crime book, “Stealing Wyeth,” released on Aug. 5. The book was written by author Bruce E. Mowday. The initial printing of the book was sold out weeks before the official release of the book, according to Barricade Books of Fort Lee, N.J., and a second printing has been ordered. Mowday has authored 20 books on true crime, history, business, and sports. He was a newspaper reporter and covered the case highlighted in the new book. Thieves broke into the Chadds Ford estate of Andrew Wyeth and took 15 paintings - seven by Andrew Wyeth, six by Jamie Wyeth, and two by other artists. The book details information about the Wyeth family, the theft, the criminals, and the law enforcement team. The hardback book contains a

That means that the students will have opportunities to move around and interact with different people throughout to the night. No one will be paired off. No partners are required, but it’s more fun with a friend. There will be an opportunity to learn something; it’s not the same pressure as a high school dance.” Hansen said that she did not discover dance until after high school but would have loved to take up the hobby as a teenager. “I loved to read historical novels as a kid, but I didn’t discover social dancing until I was

in college,” said Hansen. “This is exactly the kind of activity I’d have loved as a teen.” Summerwind Dance Society also hosts monthly social dances for high school students in Newtown Square on the second Saturday of each month during the school year. “I have a group of families that I connect with in the Newtown Square area, and I am trying to do more locally and build a network of people closer to the Downingtown and Exton area,” Hansen said. “I am a public educator as my career and this is just a passion and a hobby for me. (The dance society) is a community organization trying to get more dancing out there and make more opportunities available.” She added that Summerwind Dance Society’s mission statement is: “To bring the joy of dance to the lives of everyone, especially teens and young adults, and in doing so build our sense of community.” For more information about Summerwind Dance Society and to view videos of the dances, readers may visit www.Face book.com/SummerwindDance.

received the award at the NACo annual conference in Clark County, Nev. The Digital Counties judging panel commended Chester County on its website’s responsivedesign content management system, the digitization of several forms and applications, and the introduction of an e-filing option. The judges also highlighted efforts to provide translation of key webpages for Spanish-speaking residents. A menu option on the www.chesco.org homepage lists all information available in Spanish, and the county’s

decision to use a local translation service instead of standard translation software was made so that the translations reflect the cultural language of the Chester County community. The Digital Counties Survey is conducted annually in the spring. All U.S. counties are invited to participate in the survey, which examines the overall technology programs and plans of the county. Motorcycle Ride from pg 1 A motorcycle ride took place on July 20 to collect donations of school supplies for the children served by North Star of Chester County, a local homelessness prevention nonprofit. Riders and supporters gathered at West Chester Cycle on Downingtown Pike in West Chester to join in the hour-long trek. Mike Podgurski, the co-owner of West Chester Cycle, organized the event after learning about North Star’s program and the families they serve. Bikers brought new backpacks full of school supplies, the entry fee for the ride. North Star of Chester County serves single working parents, preventing homelessness and

promoting self-sufficiency. It provides ongoing financial assistance to help keep families in their homes while it works one-on-one with parents to help them become self-sufficient through case management and education. Because they work full-time, many North Star participants earn too much to qualify for other assistance programs but not enough to get by on their own. The school supplies collected will go to the children of parents in North Star’s program. The agency will distribute backpacks, notebooks, pencils, crayons, binders, and more at the agency’s annual summer picnic, a private gathering for the families it serves.

The Backpack Run, led by Officers Janders, Devito, and Gardner of the Chester County Sheriff’s Office, sent riders on a scenic tour of the county, ending at Timothy’s Sports Bar and Restaurant in West Chester. Timothy’s participated in the event, giving a portion of proceeds to North Star of Chester County. For more information, readers may contact 610-696-5675 or visit www.northstarofcc.org.
