New Theater Company Sets Auditions By Francine Fulton

Revival Productions, a new nonprofit theater company in Coatesville, recently announced that it will hold open auditions for its upcoming performance of “Miscast Broadway.” The show will feature traditional Broadway tunes by unexpected performers. “‘Miscast Broadway’ is a show where actors, singers and dancers perform popular Broadway songs, but with a twist - the song the performer chooses must not match their type, age or gender,” explained Vinnie Zambuto, the theater’s director of marketing. He cited an example of an older woman or man singing “It’s the Hard Knock Life,” which is normally performed by young orphans in the Broadway play “Annie.” “(The goal) is to mix things up and be a little silly,” he said. Auditions will be held on Thursday, Aug 23, beginning at 6:30 p.m. at the

Gordon Early Literacy Center, 351 Kersey St., Coatesville. Those wishing to audition must register in advance at www.revival-productions.com/auditions. “The revue concept is popular among theaters all around the country,” noted Zambuto. “We will put together a show of people singing and dancing. It will be individual performances, but everyone will rehearse together and create a cohesive show.” Performers are asked to prepare two 32-bar cuts, an up-tempo tune and a ballad unlike their normal “type.” Performers should be prepared to dance, if asked. If needed, a dance call will take place at approximately 8:15 p.m. An accompanist will be provided. The performers must be age 16 or older and must prepare a dance or tune that is family-friendly. “They should have musical ability and a theater performance background,” Zambuto noted. “Miscast Broadway” will be See Auditions pg 2

GRIEF SEMINAR

Rotary Club of Thorndale-Downingtown members helped Hopewell United Methodist Church with a project to fashion meeting rooms out of a shipping container that will be sent to Mosaic, an organization that helps orphaned children in South Africa. Participants included (back, from left) Rotary members Elva Wright, Keny Holman, Ken Simon, (front) Evelyn Samuels, Bill Keen, Laurie Keen and Mike Listmeier; project chair Tony Brantzeg; and Mosaic USA president Karen Ladd Baker.

In the summer of 2016, a shipping container called the HOOP was transformed by volunteers at Hopewell United Methodist Church (UMC) in Downingtown into a kitchen and meeting room. The container was also filled with donations before being sent to Mosaic, an organization that helps orphaned children in South Africa. The container was added to the Mosaic Paarl Community Center, which already consisted of eight previously renovated shipping containers that were attached together. This summer, local volunteers are again renovating a shipping container, which is currently situated in the far corner of Hopewell UMC’s parking lot. Once completed, HOOP 2 will be made into two rooms to be used for job training for parents who have adopted or are

Youths from 4-H clubs throughout Chester County proudly showed the animals they have been raising throughout the year, as well as their projects on a variety of topics, during the Chester County 4-H Fair held Aug. 6 to 11 at the Romano 4-H Center in Honey Brook. The event also gave youths an opportunity to share their knowledge with others. On Aug. 7, free tours of the fair were offered to the community. The tours were conducted by 4-H members, including Zach Johnson of Elverson, who is a member of the Chester County 4-H Swine Club and the Chester County 4-H Livestock Judging Team. “(The Swine Club) is actually the largest (4-H) club, consisting of over 60 people, Zach said, noting that the club meets at the Romano 4-H Center. “We have kids from all over Chester County. He said meetings include general business and an occasional guest speaker. “Speakers come in and teach us how to continually care for our pigs, said Zach. “We had a speaker who came from Ohio, and he told us about showmanship and how to make our pigs ‘drive’ across the ring, which helps with performance. Aug. 7 was also the day of the fair’s Swine Show, which was especially challenging for the animal handlers due to the high summer temperatures. “We try to keep (the animals) as cool as possible. We have fans in here, and we cool them down, Zach said. “Your pig should be sprayed down with cold water at least once every half hour throughout the day, noted Nelson Beam of Elverson, an adult leader of the Swine Club, who was on hand to conduct a Swine

Grace Covenant Church invites the community to an outdoor worship service to be held on Sunday, Aug. 26, at 10 a.m. at Miller Park, 220 Miller Way, Exton. The one-hour service will be followed by a free picnic, along with lawn games and other activities. According to pastor Tim Brown, the outdoor service is being held in place of the church’s normal 9:30 a.m. Sunday worship service that week. “This is the first time for us to do a Sunday morning service outdoors, he said, noting that the park is located a few minutes from the church off Swedesford Road, behind the Whiteland Towne Center. Brown will lead the service. The special guest musician will be Christopher Wright, a worship leader, singer and songwriter experienced in leading gatherings of all sizes. In 1995, Wright founded Blessed Hurricane Ministries, a concert and worship ministry that has taken him to churches, camps and conferences throughout the world. More information about Wright is available at www.christopherwright.com. Brown noted that the park has a gazebo, but there is no seating, so attendees are asked to bring their own lawn chairs and blankets. A picnic, featuring chicken and side dishes prepared by church members, will follow the service at around 11:45 a.m. Brown said all are welcome to attend the service whether they

Rowan Named To Dean’s List Eagles players,” Turner explained. “They all walked to the center of the field, shook hands and the players took their jerseys off and gave them to the veterans. It was really moving.” He said that the local veterans really enjoyed their special treatment at the practice. “The Eagles showed their love and respect for our veterans, and our veterans appreciated it,” Turner said. “It was nice that they got a little bit of the VIP treatment.” David’s Drive is named for David Turner Jr., an avid Eagles fan, who was a cashier at the canteen at the VA hospital when he died in 2009 at the age of 20. His family started the charity in 2010 to improve the lives of veterans. The organization’s motto is “Helping Veterans Because We Should.” Since its formation, David’s Drive has donated more than $1 million to support veterans. In addition, the organization sponsors parades and picnics for the veterans, along with other social outings. David’s Drive also assists veterans transitioning from homelessness to independent living through the Housing and Urban Development - Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing (HUD-VASH) program. The program provides housing vouchers to homeless veterans and gives them an opportunity to live independently in Chester, Delaware and Montgomery counties by providing appliances, household goods, personal care products and financial assistance for rent and utilities. Furniture is provided to the veterans through the charity’s partnership with the Community Warehouse Project. Roadside Litter Program Posted Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful has a statewide adoption program available to residents, local groups, and businesses to become part of the solution to roadside litter. The program is an option for most types of local areas, such as municipal roads, communities, parks, neighborhood blocks, greenways, waterways, and trails. According to Keep America Beautiful’s 2009 “National Visible Litter Survey and Litter Cost Study,” litter clean-up costs the U.S. more than an estimated $11.5 billion each year with municipalities spending more than $790 million and counties spending $185 million each year. The Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful adoption program works to help mitigate the costs associated with cleaning up by encouraging local residents to take ownership of communities. Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful provides a sign recognizing the groups or individuals who have adopted the road or area and

seeks the support of the local municipalities to provide the sign post, install the sign, and provide trash disposal options, as needed. The benefits of removing roadside litter are farreaching. It sends a message to travelers that littering and dumping will not be tolerated, removes dangers to people, animals and equipment, makes our communities more attractive for residents, tourists and potential newcomers and increases property values and community pride. Removing roadside litter is good for everyone. By participating in this program, residents will invest in a cleaner, more livable community. Readers may visit www.keep pabeautiful.org and click on Keep It or contact Stephanie Larson at slarson@keeppabeautiful.org or 724-836-4121, ext. 104, for more information. SVGTO Plans 11th Annual All Pontiac Show By Dayna M. Reidenouer

The 2017 All Pontiac Show hosted by the Susquehanna Valley GTO (SVGTO) drew 187 vehicles. “We typically get guests from eight to 10 states,” SVGTO president Vic Schreck said. “Many will trailer their cars. We’ll secure an area hotel with an event discount for those who wish to stay overnight.” Last year’s show was the 10th hosted by the SVGTO. In June this year, the club used its expertise to host the 39th annual GTO Association of America (GTOAA) International Convention in Valley Forge. More than 300 Pontiacs from the United States and Canada were entered in the event. A total of 414 people registered for the convention, which was the largest since 2004, when it was held in Pontiac, Mich. “The longest distance driven was a guy in his 1965 Le Mans who drove it 2,500 miles from Spokane, Wash., and then drove it back,” marveled Schreck, who was recently installed as the GTOAA national president. The GTOAA has about 4,000 members from the United States, Europe, Canada, and Australia. The SVGTO hopes to draw another big crowd for the 11th annual All Pontiac Show, which will be held on Saturday, Aug. 18, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Amos Herr Park, 1670 Nissley Road, Landisville. Registration will be open from 8 to 11 a.m. A registration fee will be charged for exhibited vehicles. Spectators will be admitted free of charge. All Pontiac vehicles, not just GTOs, are welcome at the show.

Every entry will be photographed, and registrants will receive framed copies. Prizes will be awarded in a variety of categories. “Each year our awards are changed out to keep things fresh,” Schreck noted. The show will again be accompanied by a model car contest for children and adults. Show registrants may enter the model car contest at no cost, but other See SVGTO pg 5

The event was designated as Military Appreciation Night. “We had seven (people) from David’s Drive (attend); the rest were veterans and support staff,” explained David Turner Sr., founder and president of David’s Drive. The veterans were bused to the stadium by the VA and provided with box lunches. Upon arrival at the stadium and after the resolution of a computer ticketing glitch, the group members were surprised to learn that they would be given access to club-level seating. “It took us a while to get in and once we got in, I have a buddy in the Eagles (organization) and he met us at the door and ushered us through, and guest services gave us passes for the club level,” said Turner. “We were treated to clublevel seating, which was air conditioned, and there was complimentary food and beverages and sideline access.” Turner, who was accompanied by his wife, Joy, and their daughter, Sam, said he enjoyed visiting with the veterans, most of whom had never visited the Eagles’ stadium. “One of the vets told me his mom was an Eagles fan. They had gone to the Vet (Veterans Stadium) but never had a chance to go to the Linc,” Turner related. “Joy, Sam and I sat back and were lucky enough to watch them talk and tell stories about their Eagles (memories).” Turner said the highlight of the event came at the end of the evening. “At the end of the practice, they brought about 100 veterans all dressed in their uniforms and they stood on one sideline from end zone to end zone and on the other side was a whole line of

Every distribution is also staffed by a registered dietitian and health educator from Chester County Hospital, who performs wellness checks and provides health education. Ross reported that the pantry serves nearly 700 people per month. Additionally, since many of the pantry’s clients have disabilities or are elderly, pantry volunteers make approximately 30 home food deliveries per month. The third annual Music Fest, an evening of music to benefit the Honey Brook Food Pantry, will take place on Saturday, Aug. 18, from 4 to 10 p.m. at the Honeybrook Golf Club, 1422 Cambridge Road, Honey Brook. Featured performers will include acoustic pop performer Joe Waterloo, who will open the show at 4:30 p.m., followed by local country music singer Sam Schmidthuber at 5:30 p.m. The Rosewood Trio, a group that performs folk, rock and blues, will be on the stage at 6:30 p.m. The final concert of the evening will be at 8 p.m. and will feature the Larry Roney Band, which performs rock ‘n’ roll. Sam and the Rosewood Trio have performed at both previous Music Fest events, and the Larry Roney Band performed last year. “This will be Joe Waterloo’s first appearance at Music Fest,” said Ken Ross, pantry director, who noted that efforts are made by event organizers to include a variety of musical styles. Ticketholders will get admission to the event, a beverage and a picnic burger or hot dog with fixings. All proceeds from ticket sales will go to the food pantry. To order tickets, readers may visit www.honeybrookfood pantry.org/music-fest. Tickets are also available at the golf club. Although advance ticket purchase is recommended, tickets will also be sold at the gate. Attendees are asked to bring lawn chairs or blankets for seating. The event will be held rain or shine. In the case of severe weather, activities will be moved into

the large barn at the golf club. The music program will be the pantry’s final fundraiser for the year. Previously held fundraisers included a dinner in April and a golf outing in July. “The first year (at Music Fest), we raised $5,000 and close to 200 people attended,” said Ross. “Last year, we had 350 people and we made about $7,500.” Ross will give a very brief talk about the pantry prior to the performances. He noted that the group’s mission statement is “to respectively serve area residents in need while empowering them toward food security and independence.” “Before the main event, I will tell a little bit about the program and the numbers we serve,” he said. “We will also be talking about the independence we encourage with the program. (I) will talk about how the money we make at this event is being used and (how) we are good stewards of (people’s) donations.” The Honey Brook Food Pantry is located at the Good Food Distribution Center, 5064 Horseshoe Pike, Honey Brook. Two distributions are held each month - on the second Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and on the fourth Wednesday from 4 to 6:30 p.m. Although it operates independently, the Honey Brook facility is one of the official food pantries of the Chester County Food Bank. It serves residents of Chester County living in the Twin Valley School District and the immediate surrounding area. During the distributions, clients receive nonperishable food items, beef and poultry, dairy products and fresh produce.

Not only do youths in the Potter Summer Baseball Tour enjoy playing and sharing their love of the sport, they also spend time working on community service projects. This year marked the ninth Potter Summer Baseball Tour, a camp led by Jeff Potter, a 1972 sixth-round draft pick of the Detroit Tigers. The tour included a 32-day trek across Virginia, Maryland, Ohio and Pennsylvania, during which youths enjoyed playing baseball and working in local communities. The group recently made a stop locally, where they completed volunteer service projects during the weekend of July 20 through 22. They provided service to the Twin Valley Food Pantry (TVFP), Hope Rescue Mission in Reading, the Muhlenberg Athletic Association, the Fleetwood Area Baseball Association, Twin Valley Little League and the Brandywine Battlefield in Chadds Ford. “We had 26 kids on the tour this year,” said Potter, noting that the summer camp experience has grown since it began in 2010. “The first year it was 95 percent baseball, and it evolved into community service and charity work.” He noted that youths are fully aware that the tour will be a combination of playing baseball and working hard to serve the community. “Before I put a boy or girl on the tour, I sit down with the family, so they have a good understanding that although we play baseball - and we want kids to love baseball - it’s about giving

The annual Woodcrest Retreat Benefit 3-D Archery Shoot has continued to grow in the nearly 10 years it has been held. According to organizer Phil Snader, the 2017 event attracted 160 shooters for the morning event and 44 shooters for the bonus afternoon round. “We fed (brunch to) 180 people last year,” noted Snader. “Our numbers have continued to increase.” The 2018 shoot will be held at Woodcrest Retreat, 225 Woodcrest Drive, Ephrata, on Saturday, Aug. 25, from 7 a.m. until noon. A bonus shoot will be held from noon to 3 p.m. There is a fee to take part in the morning shoot, which includes brunch, a speaker, and opportunities to win door prizes. The price will be discounted for those under age 16. A separate price will be offered for those who take part in the bonus shoot. The shoot will consist of a 30-target course featuring North American wildlife 3-D targets, including turkey and a bobcat. Organizers noted that about half the targets are deer. The course will be open from 7 to 10 a.m., when a hot brunch will be served. The speaker during brunch will be Frank Rice, pastor at Ephrata Grace Fellowship Church, who will give a short meditation on a hunting-related topic. The course will reopen from 11 a.m. to noon to conclude the morning shoot. As in years past, the shoot will feature door prizes consisting of hunting- and outdoor-related items. Vendors that specialize in outdoor sporting equipment, including a vendor that makes hunting films, will also have displays on-site. The shoot raises funds to help defray the general operating costs of Woodcrest Retreat and to subsidize fees for campers who need assistance to afford camp. “We need to raise $100,000 each year to cover our camp budget,” explained Woodcrest director

Looking forward to the ninth Woodcrest Retreat 3-D Archery Shoot are (from left) Amber Snader, Phil Snader, Gwen Snader, Anthony Sensenig, Merv Gingrich, Paul Snader, and Nelson Weaver. The 2018 shoot will be held at Woodcrest in Ephrata on Aug. 25. Cliff Martin, who added that proceeds from the shoot will be added to funds raised by the annual auction and golf tournaments in hopes of reaching that goal. Organizers noted that any style of bow may be used on the course and that families are encouraged to take part in the event together. “I have been impressed by how many people brought their sons and daughters,” noted Martin. Those who wish to take part in the hunt are encouraged to register by Monday, Aug. 20, by calling 717-738-2233 or visiting www.WoodcrestRetreat.org/Events/Benefit-3D-Archery-Shoot. Woodcrest, is located on a 110-acre wooded hillside in northeastern Lancaster County, provides camping experiences in a variety of settings, including day, resident, and adventure camps.
