They will stay in that level until the teacher (determines) they can go to the next level.” Students are invited to purchase a workbook to use throughout the program. The classes mostly consist of conversations among participants. “The main point is to get them to talk,” Vandenberg said. Students also take part in social activities to encourage their conversational skills. “We had a big traditional Thanksgiving dinner last year, and we invited their families,” said Vandenberg. “We also had an end-of-year party. “Once a month ... all the classes come together for a half-hour break,” she added. “We sing or present the Gospel message through PowerPoint or play a game.” The church has a staff of 17 teachers who volunteer their time to teach the classes and See ESL Classes pg 5

ESL Classes from pg 3
Steel River Playhouse from pg 1 completed a pre-professional Broadway intensive program with professional equity director and choreographer Dann Dunn and musical director Julie Eurillo. “Dann has worked in New York City, Philadelphia and Los Angeles, both on Broadway and in repertory theater, explained Beth McDonnell, Steel River Playhouse’s director of sales and marketing. “Julie is a highly sought-after local professional, with many students who have gone onto professional careers. “They worked with these young adults, creating an experience and a pre-professional production unlike any other, McDonnell added. The production includes middle school, high school and college students who took part in the Broadway workshop, which ran from late May until opening weekend. “We always have done a teen show in the summer. This year, we stepped it up a notch to give them a more professional experience, McDonnell noted. “It was a like a repertory experience. They worked as if they were hired to be an actor in a repertory (traveling) show. “Newsies is based on the historical newsboy strike of 1899 and revolves around poor and orphaned teenagers in
New York City, selling newspapers for a penny a paper. They take on newspaper moguls William Randolph Hearst and Joseph Pulitzer, who are trying to take away more of their meager profits. Jack Kelly becomes the leader who rallies the newsies from across the city to take a stand and strike against the most powerful publishers in the country. Their cause becomes even bigger than any of the newsies imagined when they realize they are fighting for all the children working in unfair and unsafe conditions across the country. “(We are presenting) the full Broadway version, stated McDonnell. “This is a really fun musical that is familyfriendly. “Newsies the Musical received 23 major theatrical nominations, including eight Tony Award nominations, winning the Tony Award for Best Score and Best Choreography. Tickets are available at www.steel river.org or by calling the box office at 610-970-1199. Cast photos and biographies can be found at www.facebook.com/TriPAC Village. For more information or to obtain group discounts, readers may contact McDonnell at beth.mcdonnell@steelriver.org.
lead the conversational groups. “We have been blessed to have an abundance of teachers, said Vandenberg. “Our classes are small, so everyone gets individualized attention. “We don’t charge anything; we just love doing it, she added. For more information about the classes, readers may contact the church at 610-524-5338 or linda@cc-chester springs.com. Students may enroll at any time during the semester.

As part of an effort to promote fellowship and sharing among members of local Lutheran congregations, a multichurch picnic will be held at Living God Lutheran Church (LGLC) in Honey Brook on Sunday, Aug. 26, from 4 to 6 p.m. The event will be held rain or shine. Participating in the picnic will be congregation members from LGLC, as well as the following Lutheran churches: Messiah of Downingtown, Good Shepherd of Coatesville, St. Paul’s of Lionville and Community of Love of Oxford. Area Lutherans are invited to attend the free event to meet other Lutherans in the area and to enjoy a potluck meal, music, children’s games and a time of fellowship. All those attending will also be able to walk LGLC’s nature trail, located on the church property. According to LGLC worship leader Sue Fessenbecker, one of the event organizers, the joint effort began earlier this year when members of local churches that were being led by interim pastors met to discuss the issues of finding a permanent pastor. “Lutherans have a lengthy process (for appointing a pastor), she explained, noting that pastors in search of a new appointment are matched with churches who are seeking a pastor based on their profiles. Candidates are then interviewed and voted on by the congregation. “(Getting together) was a joint effort between Messiah and Living God Lutheran churches, which were both without pastors and decided to meet and join resources, Fessenbecker continued. “We all struggle with ... how long the process takes, and we get discouraged. We try to keep everyone upbeat. We know it will happen in God’s time, and we are here to support each other. The churches’ first joint activity was in March, when they took part in a private screening of “I Can Only Imagine at a local movie theater. Fessenbecker said that last year, LGLC members attended a community worship service at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in West Brandywine. “That’s kind of what we wanted to do, but it evolved into a fellowship picnic for us to get to know each other, she noted, adding that LGLC reached out to other nearby Lutheran churches when planning the picnic. “We really enjoyed worshipping with Catholics and Presbyterians, Episcopalians and others (at the community service at St. Peter’s), she added. “With all that’s happening in the world, it was nice to be united as a Christian community. The upcoming picnic will be held outdoors, weather permitting. Members of the various churches are providing the food. “We will have a hymn sing, and each of the interim pastors (and pastors) will do an introduction of their congregation, said Fessenbecker. “We will have an icebreaker event for people to get to know other congregations. We will also have a scavenger hunt along the nature trail. LGLC expects between 100 and 125 attendees at the upcoming picnic. “The goal is to celebrate the Lutheran tradition and make new friends, Fessenbecker added. LGLC is located at 3200 Horseshoe Pike (Route 322), Honey Brook. For more information, readers may call 610-2739383 or visit www.livinggodchurch.org.

for adoption. Final Friday is a street fair hosted by the Parkesburg Action Committee (PAC) on the last Friday of each month from April through October. Activities take place along the 200 block of Main Street in Parkesburg. Special guests at the August event will include Lucky Dawg Animal Rescue, LaMancha Animal Rescue and the Animal House Project, which runs the Chester County Pet Food Pantry. “Each one (of the rescues) is bringing animals (available) for adoption,” said PAC member Jenny Alexander, who noted that “Dog Days of Summer” was also the Final Friday theme last August. “People can meet them and then go through the adoption process. They want to make sure they go to good home. “Last year there was a little beagle, and one of our vendors fell in love with the dog and a week later adopted her,” she added. Lucky Dawg is a nonprofit, no-kill, all-volunteer, foster-based organization that rescues homeless, abused or unwanted dogs and cats in the area. The organization is always looking for foster families to take care of the pets until they find forever homes. For more information about the organization or to

volunteer as a foster, readers may visit www.luckydawganimalrescue.com. La Mancha rescues horses, dogs, cats, goats and other animals. More information about volunteering or adopting an animal from LaMancha is available at www.lamanchaanimalrescue.org. Representing Animal House Project will be board president Mary Beth Yannessa and Yoshi, the charity’s spokespuppy. “We will be doing ‘pooch smooches,’” Yannessa said. “For a donation, people will able be to get a kiss from Yoshi.” Readers may learn about Yoshi at www.facebook.com/YoshiTheWoolyAkita. Yannessa will also offer treat bags for a donation. Each bag will contain a dog or cat treat and a pet toy. All donations will benefit the Animal House Project, whose mission is to keep pets at home and out of shelters by providing donated pet food and pet care services to families in financial need. During Final Friday, the street will be closed to vehicular traffic so that local residents can enjoy visiting local businesses and shopping from vendors. Also featured will be food trucks, a Kids’ Zone and live music. For August, in keeping with the theme, there will be personalized dog trainers on hand, as well as Heidi Mottin and her dog, Reed. Mottin, author of “Rescuing Reed: The Little Dog Who Could,” will offer autographed copies of the book. “We have local artists and jewelry makers and all kinds of vendors come in from surrounding areas,” said Alexander. “We have churches that will offer kids’ crafts. This month, Octorara field hockey will set up cones and children will be able to practice field hockey.” Alexander noted that there are generally 30 to 40 vendors and five food trucks. “We switch it up so there are different kinds of food, including desserts,” she added. PAC plans and organizes each Final Friday in conjunction with the borough of Parkesburg. “One of the reasons we decided to do (Final Friday) was to bring awareness of all the great things we have in Parkesburg,” said Alexander. “It’s nice to see people from surrounding communities come in.” For more information about Final Friday, readers may visit www.parkes burgfinalfriday.weebly.com or search for “Parkesburg Action Committee” on Facebook.

Deputies from pg 1 The Chester County Sheriff’s Office recently welcomed three new deputies. Arthur B. Adams, Asim O. John, and Sean M. Marasco each took the oath during a swearing-in ceremony held in Courtroom One of the Chester County Justice Center. Adams, a native of Chester County, has been working for several years as a security officer, most recently at Lankenau Hospital. He also worked previously as a correctional officer at Chester County Prison. After graduating from Downingtown West High School, Adams decided that his longtime interest in helping others made law enforcement a logical career choice. Although his family has a strong history of military service, Adams was the first to pursue police work. He received his Act 120 certification from the Delaware County Community College Police Academy in 2013. When he is not working, Adams enjoys spending time with his family as well as playing golf. John grew up in Oxford, and after graduating from Oxford Area High School, he found a niche for his mechanical talents in the aerospace industry, where he built parts for private jets and helicopters. About five years, he became interested in changing gears. A close friend, former Chester County Deputy Sheriff Kevin Brough, urged John to consider law enforcement, especially the Sheriff’s Office. John graduated from the Delaware County Community College Police Academy in 2016 and began working for the Lincoln University Police Department.
In his spare time, John enjoys spending time with his family. He and his wife have three children, ranging in age from 7 months to 11 years, and a fourth child is on the way. John can also often be found making repairs or improvements to cars or exercising his passion for motorcycles. Although Marasco was born in Wilmington, Del., his family moved to Chester County when he was an infant. He considers himself a Coatesville native since he grew up in that area. He experienced strong military and law-enforcement influences from multiple family members, but he did not decide to follow that lead until after earning a bachelor’s degree in international business from Widener University. Since then, Marasco obtained a real estate license, traveled around the world, and joined the Pennsylvania Army National Guard, where he has served for the past five years. He also attended the Reading Police Academy, graduating in 2015. Marasco and his wife, Jessica, have two sons: 3-year-old Mason and 4-month-old Kelley. In his free time, Marasco enjoys a wide variety of outdoor activities, including camping, kayaking, snowboarding and scuba diving. Pictured on front: Chester County Sheriff’s Office command staff members (from left) Lt. Adam Sibley, Lt. Kurt Hansen, Chief Deputy Jason Suydam, and Sheriff Carolyn Bunny Welsh welcome new deputy sheriffs (continuing from left) Sean Marasco, Arthur Adams, and Asim John.
