Vintage Cars, Motorcycles To Compete In Coatesville Grand Prix BY FRANCINE FULTON
T
he normally quiet streets of Coatesville will be transformed into a race course where vintage cars and motorcycles will compete to earn the best times as the Coatesville Invitational Vintage Grand Prix returns to the area for the fifth year on Saturday, Sept. 18, from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Spectators are welcome to line the racecourse and watch the cars free of charge. There is also an opportunity for people to attend a PrixView Party on Thursday, Sept. 16, and a new Friday Cruise-In on Sept. 17. More than 70 rare vintage cars and motorcycles, dating from 1900 to 1975, will be part of the grand prix. Drivers will compete in individually timed heats over a 2.2-mile road course, which will be lined with old-style straw bales. In addition to a full day of competition, spectators can enjoy music, vendors and food trucks, which will be featured on race day. Because the event was canceled in 2020, the Grand Prix was last held in 2019. Cars that took part in that event included a Ferrari, a Porsche, a Lotus and an Auburn, along with other rare vintage cars and motorcycles. A grand prix is not a wheel-to-wheel race, which means it is not cars racing side by side,” explained event director Lisa Thomas. “It’s timed heats. Each car goes out (by itself).” Trophies will be awarded in each of five divisions, and the Brian Hoskins’ Trophy will be awarded to the top compet-
itor who best exemplifies sportsmanship, skill and safety on the course. Members of the Brandywine Motorsports Club will oversee the technical aspects of the event. Also on hand to provide assistance will be local first responders. A VIP area, hosted by the Western Chester County Chamber of Commerce will be located near the start and finish line. It will be open to sponsors, competitors and ticket holders. The weekend will kick off with PrixView Party, co-hosted by the Coatesville Rotary Club and Leading Edge Autosport, on Sept. 16, at the Brooklawn Estate, 1825 Newark Road, Kennett Square. The ticketed event will feature cocktails, light fare, music and a performance by country singer Jackie Verna, who appeared as a top 10 contestant on Season 14 of “The Voice.” The Friday Cruise-In will take place from 6 to 9 p.m. on Lincoln Highway between First and Fifth streets in Coatesville. The public is invited to park hot rods, classic cars and restored cars at the location. No entry fee or registration is required, but all vehicles must be licensed. All proceeds raised through sponsorships, entry fees and the sale of event memorabilia will benefit the City of Coatesville’s capital projects and Parks and Recreation activities. For information regarding sponsorship or vendor opportunities, to order VIP tickets or for additional details, visit www.coatesvillegrandprix.com or

Habitat For Humanity Dedicates Homes In Coatesville BY FRANCINE FULTON During a recent dedication celebration, three families officially became homeowners through Habitat for Humanity (HFH) of Chester County. Current HFH of Chester County board president Michael Cappelletti presided over the event and introduced the guest speakers, many of whom were from area businesses that supported the project, as well as volunteers and local officials. “The home dedication is the culmination of all the good work that we do at Habitat,” Cappelletti stated. “Each time I come to these dedications and see the families that move into the homes, it is the highlight of my career,” added Patrick Bokovitz, director of the Chester County Department of Community Development. Pastor Dan Krewson of Calvary Lutheran Church in West Chester offered the opening prayer. Chris Wiseman, executive director of HFH of Chester County, introduced the Pursell, Ortiz and Carter families, each of which was presented a Bible and a hammer to symbolize the work that went into building the homes. Guest speakers included Carolyn Wilt and Terri Seamen of Thrivent Financial, who spoke of their pride in partnering with HFH and congratulated the homeowners. Vernita Dorsey drove from Delaware to also congratulate the homeowners as the representative from WSFS Bank, which has partnered with HFH of Chester County for more than five years. Stephen Briggs of Wells Fargo presented the organization with a check for $20,000 to go toward future projects in the Coatesville area. Mike Smith from the Giant Company presented the homeowners with grocery bags full of pantry staples and $3,500 to go
toward food shopping. He also acknowledged that each family would receive free delivery of their groceries for a year. Local dignitaries at the dedication event included Coatesville City Council president Linda Lavender-Norris, Coatesville City Council member Donald Folks and former HFH of Chester County board presidents Michael Leader and Andy Signore. Charles “Chip” Houston, who served as executive director of HFH of Chester County’s for 17 years and is now Coatesville assistant city manager, was also in attendance. Krewson provided the final prayer and blessed each home individually, with the help of all in attendance, who collectively placed their hands on the new homes. According to www.hfhcc.org, Habitat homes are not provided to the homeowners free of charge. In addition to an affordable monthly mortgage payment, each homeowner must complete at least 200 hours of “sweat equity” helping to build their home. These houses in particular were constructed during the pandemic, so volunteers and homeowners had to adhere to COVID-19 restrictions. Habitat is currently accepting applications for homes in the same Coatesville development. The application and qualifications can be found at www.hfhcc.org/homeownership. For more information about HFH of Chester County, located at 1847 E. Lincoln Highway, Coatesville, visit the previously mentioned website, call 610-384-7993 or visit www.facebook.com/chescohabitat.

OneRunTogether Celebrates 10 Years Of Helping Cancer Patients BY FRANCINE FULTON
approved, bills are submitted for direct payment.
“It is hard to believe we have been helping cancer patients for (10 years),” stated Vernon Murphy, founder and executive director of the Chester County-based nonprofit organization O n e R u n To g e t h e r (ORT). “I remember wondering how in the world I was going to run a nonprofit when I did not have a clue how to run a business. God certainly has sustained us with amazing volunteers, sponsors and donors.”
Prior to the pandemic, Murphy personally delivered the grants to the patients and presented them with a Bible. “I am hoping to get back to that. Right now, I don’t want to risk their health any more than it already is,” he shared. “I still send a package with a Bible and a

ORT has already set next year’s fundraising banquet at Downingtown Country Club for Saturday, Nov. 5, 2022. Building on the success of its recent Ready, Set GLOW! 5K held on July 24 at the Honeybrook Golf Club, which raised more than $2,000, the next scheduled ORT event will be a Superheroes 5K on Saturday, Oct. 30, at Weaver’s Orchard in Morgantown. It will be held in place of the annual Hard to the Core 5K Mud Run typically held at Weaver’s. All participants will be asked to wear costumes. More details about the event will be forthcoming at the ORT website. Those who wish to apply to receive funds while undergoing cancer treatment may complete an application at www.oneruntogether.org by clicking on Patient Grant Application. ORT’s board of directors reviews all applications, which must be signed and submitted by an oncologist or a certified professional. After an application is townlively.com

Because of the pandemic, Murphy said that there will be no 10th anniversary celebration banquet. The annual banquet was canceled in 2020 as well. “Once we knew we would not have the dinner (in 2020), we had a fundraising event and sent out letters and emails to people and asked for donations,” said Murphy, noting that the last in-person banquet in 2019 raised more than $36,000 for the organization. “It was amazing that we ended up bringing in the same amount (in 2020) as the year before (when there was a banquet).”

Pastoring During A Pandemic church was seeing how old (Forks of the Brandywine) is. It was here before our country was even founded,” he said, noting that the church was formed by Scottish and Scots-Irish settlers in September of 1735. “I like history, and it was cool to see the church (that was built) in 1875. I’ve never been in a church like this before. It was a great first impression, and the folks were incredibly warm and welcoming. I knew it was a nice fit for me and my wife.”
BY FRANCINE FULTON When the Rev. Wesley Grubb was named the new pastor of Forks of the Brandywine Evangelical Presbyterian Church in October of 2020, not only was he faced with the challenges of becoming a senior pastor for the first time, but he also had to learn how to minister during a pandemic.
The church holds its Sunday worship service at 10:30 a.m. Services are also livestreamed at www.forkschurch.org. The congregation is currently meeting in the church’s fellowship hall, which is air conditioned. After Labor Day, services will once again return to the sanctuary. Grubb explained that the service is traditional and that his sermons are designed to make biblical passages understandable, teach congregation members how to apply truths in a meaningful way and empower them with Christ’s strength. “That is one of the most important parts of preaching - how we can apply (past teachings) to our own lives where we are right now,” he said.
“It’s been hard to meet the whole church because we still have certain limitations and a lot of people have chosen to watch or listen online, which is a good option,” he said. “(But) it has made it more difficult to meet people. As restrictions roll back, I hope to meet everyone in person and build a pastoral relationship with them. I am looking forward to that.”
Grubb and his wife, Sara, are enjoying getting to know the area and discovering new places to enjoy and eat dinner. “Sara and I are so grateful to be here at the Forks,” he stated. “We are settled in and very happy.” Forks of the Brandywine is located at 1648 Horseshoe Pike, Glenmoore. For more information, visit the church’s website, call 610-942-2626 or search for “Forks of the Brandywine Evangelical Presbyterian Church” on Facebook.
Grubb, a native of North Carolina, said that when he first visited the church in the summer of 2020, he knew almost immediately that it was the right place for him to begin serving as the congregation’s new pastor. “One of the things that drew me to the

T V or not T V? When my stepson brought his new wife to stay at our home for the first time, we could not wait to watch his face while telling embarrassing stories about his childhood, like the time he refused to go into the pool because he didn’t want to get his new bathing suit wet. We especially wanted to share with her the fact that throughout his young life we frequently compared him to Jake, the character on “Two and a Half Men.” However, we soon discovered that our new daughter-in-law had never heard of the Charlie Sheen

Instead, she and her sisters spent their childhood days on a ranch out West caring for and riding horses, hiking, camping, swimming, fishing, riding four-wheelers and helping their dad with chores and his woodworking hobby. I could not imagine growing up without television. Our family television set at home, housed in a console, was the focal point in our living room. also enjoy detective shows, shows about the paranormal and news programs. We also occasionally catch a game show like “To Tell the Truth” and “Family Feud.” And, of course, we watch sports. Despite television’s importance in bringing us news, sports, music and entertainment, however, there is something to learn from a person who grew up without it. All of us need to put down the remote and go back to a childhood-like summer when we spent the days outdoors. There are paths to walk with the dogs, neighbors to talk to, books to read and music to listen to. And above all, we need to spend more time with our friends and loved ones. And, even though I recognize that TV is not the most important thing in life, I will still try to get my stepson’s wife to watch “Two and a Half Men” when she comes to visit again. I may also try to convince her to watch at least one episode of “Law & Order.”

And, as we got older, sitcoms like “Everybody Loves Raymond,” “Friends” and “Frasier” were the popular shows to watch. Today, dramas, especially those revolving around police and detective work, like “Law & Order” and the various “CSI” franchises, replay often at our house. Who among us has not watched a marathon of “Law & Order SVU” on a quiet weekend at home? Our current favorites include talent shows like “American Idol” and “America’s Got Talent,” reality shows like “Survivor” and “Hell’s Kitchen” and current dramas, including “911,” “Blue Bloods” and “FBI.” We
