Ministries (TCM) program at Trinity Assembly of God (AG), free food is now being distributed every Thursday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Charles A. Melton Arts and Education Center, a nonprofit community center located at 501 E. Miner St., West Chester. Visitors will receive a bag of nonperishable food, as well as frozen food donated by local convenience stores. No proof of income or residency is required. “We are giving away canned foods and nonperishable food, and we have them prepacked in bags, so people can just pick them up,” explained Caleb Gudgeon, director of TCM. “(However), if people just need canned vegetables, they can (take those); it’s very informal. “We are also giving out frozen breakfast sandwiches, chicken bites and soft pretzels,” he added. The evening will begin with hors d’oeuvres and the opening of the silent auction. The catered dinner will be served at 8 p.m., followed by the live auction at 9 p.m. The silent auction will close 15 minutes after the live auction ends. There is also an option to attend a VIP reception at 6 p.m. For ticket information, readers may visit www.anselmamill.org/fall-event or visit www.eventbrite.com and search for “The Mill at Anselma Annual Fall

It will be catered food; you will not leave hungry.” Silent auction items will include certificates for pet grooming and dinners, jewelry, a load of firewood and trips to local attractions. “For the live auction, we have a trip to Jamaica, a carriage ride, a side of beef, a catered dinner at the mill and small dinners where a chef serves you,” said Caverly. “This year, we will have a helicopter ride out of Lancaster Airport.” He pointed out that visitors will also be able to watch the mill in operation

Once the immediate emergency need is resolved, the mill plans to expand its interpretive space, partially opening the Miller’s House residence to tours and updating the historic Anselma Post Office located at the site. Plans also call for recognizing some of the historic figures who lived at the mill property during its years of operation. The Mill at Anselma is located at 1730 Conestoga Road, Chester Springs. For more information, readers may contact Caverly at executive.director@anselma mill.org. More information about the mill is available at www.anselmamill.org.

Concordia Choral Arts (CCA), a Chester County community chorale in its 12th year, will present an intergenerational collaborative concert celebrating the United Nations’ International Day of Peace on Sunday, Sept. 23, at 3 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, 145 Main St., Phoenixville. The concert is free and open to the public. It will be followed by a reception at Community Arts Phoenixville, 207 Bridge St., Phoenixville. CCA has been an active participant in local International Day of Peace activities in recent years. This year’s concert will feature works of classic and contemporary choral music, along with performances by Phoenixville singer-songwriters Anna Spackman and Shawn Cephas, storytelling artist Celeste Montgomery, and local students. The audience will be invited to participate in some of the music making. The event is open to people of all ages, and no musical ability is required. The International Day of Peace, established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1981, is observed around the world each year on Sept. 21. This year’s Peace Day theme, “The Right to Peace,” celebrates the 70th anniversary of the United Nations’ Universal Declaration of

Human Rights. The United Nations invites people around the world to listen, reflect, and share in open dialogue about what it means for peace to be a right of every human being, what it means to be peacefilled individuals, and how individuals may actively contribute to creating a culture of peace within their communities. The peace charter is available at www.international dayofpeace.org. CCA’s mission is to enrich the community

All proceeds will benefit the operation of the mill and the Mill at Anselma Preservation and Educational Trust, the nonprofit organization that acquired the mill in 1999. Caverly noted in mid-August, heavy rains washed out the dam used to redirect water into the mill’s pond. Water in the pond powers the mill’s water wheel and grindstones. “There is an unnamed stream that is a tributary of the Pickering Creek,” Caverly explained. “We had a dam set up to divert the water to the mill, but that got blasted out. The stream now goes (directly) into Pickering Creek.” He noted that there is some water remaining in the pond, but that the dam needs to be rebuilt so that the pond can fill up again. “We can run the mill for demonstration purposes, but we cannot rely on it for production services,” he said. “We need decent water pressure. CCA maintains a three-season performance schedule throughout the year and reaches out to the community to bring music directly to people who cannot attend concerts by presenting programs in nursing homes, senior centers, and skilled care facilities. and music programs. For more information, readers may visit www.concordia choralarts.org. Pictured on front:

a usable bicycle and a safety helmet. A bicycle light is recommended. “On a night like tonight, when it’s nice and cool and bright, it’s just beautiful, said bike leader Jan Johnson as the Atglen group prepared to head out on Aug. 23. “I moved to the area 37 years ago, and I’ve been riding all those years. I often come out in this direction and ride, and it’s been fun, she said. The Atglen ride travels about 10 miles along the Octorara Creek. “I started leading these rides for Bike Chester County to get people out who are beginners, to ... get them comfortable riding on the road, Johnson said. “We go about 10 miles, but we can add miles on if we want to. We usually ride along Octorara Creek because it’s cool and it’s shady and it’s beautiful and it’s flat. Another ride organizer for Bike Chester County is Amanda Lozinak. “We welcome everybody. We have a beginner ride, and we have an intermediate ride. Beginner rides are for people who just want to try it. Intermediate rides

normally go about 15 to 30 miles, Lozinak said. “We usually get a good following in Phoenixville and Exton of intermediate riders who come out. We go around 12 to 15 miles per hour. They’re for the regular rider who wants to have more of a challenge. For riders who normally go out alone, the group rides are a nice change of pace. “There’s the security of it. At Atglen, the rides are on the road. It’s a good opportunity to try some road riding out and get used to the hand signals, Lozinak said. “It’s nicer to ride with a group instead of by yourself all the time. The ultimate goal of Bike Chester County, which is managed under the larger seven-county organization the Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia, is to advocate for riders and support trails for cyclists’ use. The group has helped do that by meeting with planning commissions and local government when there are bicycle-related issues. Group members conducted study rides to gather

information on routes and are available to explain the needs of riders on roads. “We’re there to comment and provide information, Lozinak said. Anyone who would like to participate

in a group ride is welcome. Preregistration is not needed. For more information, readers may visit www.bikechestercounty.org or search for “Bike Chester County on Facebook.

North Coventry elementary schools, as well as STEM materials in East Coventry, French Creek and East Vincent elementary schools. Unsold items from both the yard sale and the children’s consignment sale will be donated to charity. The OJR High School band recently began its 2018 performance schedule, which includes halftime shows at football games and appearances at local holiday parades. The band also plays in the stands during the games and performs the national anthem. The band made its debut on Aug. 24 during OJR High School’s football game against Conestoga High School. According to Todd Mengel, high school band director, this year’s show is titled “The Legacy of John Williams, which is a tribute to the popular movie composer. Featured songs are from the movies “Jurassic Park, “Empire of the Sun, “Indiana Jones and “Star Wars. “It will be another OJR-style show all the way, said Mengel. “When audiences think about the OJR marching band, they know they are going to be treated to a big, bold and exciting show. I’m very sure that we will once again be the audience favorite. For more information about the high school band, readers may visit www.ojrhs band.com. At this time of year, the volunteers from Trinity AG are stationed outside the Melton Center on Thursday evenings. “Whenever the weather is nice, we will be right outside in the picnic table area, Gudgeon noted. “In the case of inclement weather and when it gets colder, we will move indoors. He added that signs will be posted directing visitors to the food giveaway. Gudgeon said that people are still learning about the distribution, which officially began on Aug. 23. “People will get to know us, and we’ll grow from there, he said. The food distribution is the latest effort by TCM, whose mission is to serve hungry people in the community through its Joseph’s Closet food bank. Gudgeon explained that volunteers pick up food every day from local restaurants, fast-food establishments, grocery stores and convenience stores. The items are then delivered to partner organizations for distribution in Coatesville, Philadelphia and Wilmington, Del., among other areas. “We distribute 2,500 pounds of food a week. We literally feed thousands of people

in the greater Philadelphia area every single week, said Gudgeon. The community is invited to help the church with its food ministry. People may donate canned food at any time by placing donations in the waterproof food collection bin located outside the church. Items that the food bank is especially in need of include soup, canned fruit and vegetables, peanut butter and jelly. The church is in need of volunteer drivers to pick up and deliver food. A driver’s license and a clean driving record are required. Volunteers are also being sought to help with the distribution at the Melton Center on Thursday nights. Trinity AG is located at 1022 Pottstown Pike, West Chester. For more information, including volunteer opportunities, readers may contact Gudgeon at 610-6921897 or calebgudgeon@trinityag.org. Those in need of food are also asked to contact Gudgeon. More information about the church is available at www.trinityag.org or www.facebook.com/TrinityAGWC.

David Kim Performance To Benefit “Messiah” Sing-Along By Ann Mead Ash

When violinist David Kim performs at the Calvin and Janet High Fine Art Center at Lancaster Mennonite School, 2176 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster, on Tuesday, Sept. 18, at 7:30 p.m., the event will benefit another musical presentation - the “Messiah” Sing-Along - which has been held each spring and winter in Lancaster and Chester counties for more than 20 years. The “Messiah” Sing-Along is a musical event that includes no rehearsals and features volunteer singers and musicians. According to conductor Clair Leaman, the event is unique because people can just show up and sing. The piece is

treated as a performance, but Leaman noted that sometimes people in the audience sing along too. The Lancaster County Sing-Along has been held at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 2151 Oregon Pike, Lancaster. The Chester County presentation has been held at Upper Octorara Presbyterian Church, 1121 Octorara Trail, Parkesburg. The next Chester County SingAlong will be held on Friday, Dec. 28, and the next Lancaster County Sing-Along will be held on Friday, April 26, 2019. Kim, who was named concertmaster of the Philadelphia Orchestra in 1999, has been playing the violin since age 3. He began studying under Dorothy DeLay at the age of 8, and he holds bachelor’s and

master’s degrees from the Juilliard School. He recently appeared as concertmaster of the All-Star Orchestra on the Public Broadcasting System, at the Brahms Festival, and with the Fairbanks Symphony in Alaska. He is soloist each season with the Philadelphia Orchestra. As a teacher, Kim is founder and artistic director of the annual David Kim Orchestral Institute of Cairn University of Philadelphia. He also serves as professor of violin studies at Cairn. Kim lives near Philadelphia. Readers may learn more about him at www.davidkimviolin.com. About a year ago, Leaman was discussing the future of the sing-along with supporter JM Herr. “As we move forward, we will (need a legacy),” explained Leaman. “(Herr) is friends with David Kim,” said Leaman. Herr offered to ask Kim to perform a benefit concert for the singalong. “Kim said he would love to do it,” said Leaman. Among the selections Kim will perform at the Sept. 18 concert will be “Soli Deo Gloria” and

Massenet’s “Meditation” from “Thais,” which is Kim’s signature piece. His selections will also include “When I Survey the Wondrous Cross,” “Banjo and Fiddle,” and “Carmen Fantasy.” Tickets to Kim’s concert are available at http://messiahsingalong.com, and purchasers may select seats from those available. Seats in the balcony will be sold at a discount, and discounts will be offered for senior citizens, military personnel, and students. Any tickets remaining on the day of the concert will be available at the door.

injury caused by a bump, blow, or jolt to the head or from a fall or blow to the body that causes the head and brain to move quickly back and forth. Concussions can have serious short-term and long-term impacts, especially on young people whose brains are still developing. In 2011, the Safety in Youth Sports Act was signed into law in Pennsylvania, requiring all school entities to develop return-to-play policies for student athletes with concussions, as well as requiring related training for coaches. Readers may visit www.health.pa.gov and search for Traumatic Brain Injury for approved curricula for coaches and other school personnel, along with frequently asked questions about the law and many other state-related resources. Most importantly, if parents think their child has a concussion, they should seek medical attention, discuss the injury with the coach, and not allow the athlete to return to play without permission from a health care professional.
