Downingtown Family Opens Little Free Library By Francine Fulton

Hoping to share their love of reading with people young and old, members of the Spidel family of Downingtown recently opened a Little Free Library in their front yard to offer books to neighbors, friends and the community. According to www.littlefree library.org, the Little Free Library program is a free book exchange that invites readers to “take a book or return a book.” Each Little Free Library is a book-sharing box that is weatherproof and contains shelves to hold the books. Those who construct the boxes and register them, called stewards, receive an official charter sign, which is placed on the box. Locations of registered free libraries nationwide can be found on a map at the website. Meredith Spidel explained that her

family became familiar with Little Free Libraries while on vacation at the New Jersey shore. “We took to the idea the first week of summer vacation when visiting a Little Free Library at the beach in Cape May. There is one there that we always visit,” she said. “We then got a game plan in order and worked hard at making it happen. “It was truly a family effort,” she continued. “My husband built the library, the kids held a lemonade stand to raise funds for the materials and the registration fee and we all gathered books from our stash and from friends.” Family members, along with neighbors and friends, held a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Sept. 1 to officially open the library, which is fastened onto a large tree in front of their home. Spidel said that the library contains See Little Free Library pg 2

Chester Springs Library recently began a Community Seed Connection, which offers local gardeners free seeds for planting with the idea that the “borrowers” can later return seeds saved from the plants they have grown. Seeds can also be donated. According to library director Nancy Niggel, the seeds used to start the program were donated from seed companies and local gardeners. She also received leftovers from the 2019 Chester County Seed Swap held in January by the West Vincent Township Sustainability Committee. Community members are invited to choose from an assortment of seeds that are clearly labeled in drawers that formerly held the library’s card catalog. “We took a couple of drawers in the card catalog and repurposed them,” explained Niggel. “I took the

donated seeds and portioned them into smaller packages, and people can take them out and use them and hopefully (return) some seeds, although that’s not necessary. (Returning seeds saved from plants) will make the seed library sustainable.” Those who cannot return seeds are asked to donate one or two packs of open-pollinated, non-GMO, non-hybrid seeds. These descriptions can be found on the seed packet. Seed packs offered at the library typically contain between four and 10 seeds each, with more in the case of smaller seeds. There is separate section for seeds that are “easy to save.” “There is no limit. You can take as many packets as you want,” Niggel said. Seed “borrowers” are asked to complete a registration form, which includes questions about their gardens. They are also asked to list what they “borrowed” and,

later, they may list what they returned. Niggel said that some seeds are useful now for fall crops, while others may be used this coming winter. “February is when (most) people start their seedlings inside,” she noted. While Niggel was setting up the seed program, she contacted the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh, which has a successful seed program at its Lawrenceville branch. The library provided her with lists of web resources and information about how to save seeds, which she now shares with Chester Springs Library patrons. According to the information provided, the seeds from peppers and tomatoes may be easily obtained for replanting. For peppers, gardeners should simply remove the seeds and lay them on a paper towel to dry. To save the seeds from tomatoes, gardeners should take the following steps: squeeze the seeds and some pulp into a jar, add water, let the tomato pulp ferment for about three days until it develops a fungus on top, remove the fungus, rinse the seeds

clean and dry the seeds on a paper towel. Niggel pointed out that another library in the Chester County Library System has started a seed program as well. “(Staff members from) Kennett Library came all the way up here to look at (ours), and they started one as well,” she said. Niggel noted that according to research, seed libraries promote gardening, physical activity, healthy eating, family togetherness and community spirit. They are also said to create locally resilient plants. Currently, Chester Springs Library is looking for seed savers and gardeners to donate seeds they have saved or leftover seeds from this year. For more information, readers may contact Niggel at cslibrary@ccls.org or 610-827-9212. Chester Springs Library is located at 1709 Art School Road, Chester Springs, in the village of Historic Yellow Springs. Visitors to the box may find advance copies of various books that Spidel receives through her job as a blogger and author for www.themomoftheyear.net, which is a parenting resource website. “My job allows me to secure ARCs (advance-release copies) and brand-new titles to share in the library,” Spidel noted. “Disney will send me a whole bunch of titles for kids, and I get sent a lot of novels for adults.” Those who visit the book box are also invited to sign a guest book. “We have a guest book in there which is like a journal. People can sign it, write a message or say hello,” Spidel noted, adding that the family plans to add a light to illuminate the box at night. Spidel checks the box each morning in case the supply of books needs to be replenished. “My goal is to keep a stock in our house so when it gets low, we will have a supply,” she said. “(We want) to make this a truly familyfriendly Little Free Library with books for babies through adults. Our family loves visiting these libraries, and when my kids can find a book that meets their interests and reading level, it’s such a win.” She added that if there is an excess of collected books, she will donate them to the Downingtown Library. In addition to promoting reading, Spidel said the box has promoted the spirit of community among the local residents, noting that the neighborhood

Tebow was born in the Philippines as the son of missionaries and has returned to the Philippines many times throughout his life to spread God’s Word and to serve those in need. He established the Tim Tebow Foundation in 2010. The foundation helps make dreams come true for children with life-threatening illnesses, builds “Timmy’s Playrooms” in children’s hospitals and provides life-changing surgeries to children of the Philippines through the Tebow CURE Hospital. One lady I never met before came to our grand opening ceremony, and I invited her to our neighborhood book club. That’s what it’s all about,” Spidel said. “We’ve had great support with neighbors and friends offering donations and are so excited to see how this library can be a delight for the community.” The Spidel family’s Little Free Library can be found at 100 Wildbrier Road, Downingtown, located off North Guthriesville Road. Tim Tebow was a beloved college football champion, Heisman trophy winner, media sensation, and best-selling author drafted in the first round in 2010. He had a miracle playoff run with the Broncos before being traded to the Jets. After one season, he was cut. Next, he was signed by the Patriots then let go after training camp, a scenario that repeated itself the following summer with the Eagles. Tim Tebow has achieved big victories and plunged the depths of failure, all while never letting go of his faith, even in the face of doubt and disappointment. He’ll share why neither the highs nor the lows of his life can define him—and how you can find confidence and know who you are.

Enjoy a fun night out & get lucky! No one under age 16 admitted. (610) 917-2229 WWW.PHXVILLEWOMENSOUTREACH.ORG

Outgrown Sale from pg 1 The sale will feature gently used children’s clothing, as well as toys, books, maternity clothing and more. “Right now, we have 85 consignors,” said Carolyn Clark, who co-chairs the Bradford Heights Outgrown Sale Committee along with Ellen Beears and Heike Evans. Consigners include school families as well as community members. The BHHSA holds sales twice a year, including a spring sale and a fall/winter sale. “This is the 10th year and our 20th sale,” said Clark. “It is a great fundraiser.” For the upcoming event, seasonal items will be featured. “We will have coats, boots, mittens, gloves, hats, snow-

suits and snow pants and Halloween costumes. (Halloween garb) is one of our big items; that usually takes up a couple of racks in the middle of the school gym. Coats are also (popular),” said Clark. Also offered will be holiday dresses for girls and formalwear for boys, including suits. The sale will take place in the multipurpose room at the school. Clothing will be sorted into girls’ and boys’ sections and then categorized by size from newborn through tweens, up to size 16. “Half of the (room) will be clothes with (Halloween) costumes in the middle and a separate section for the girls’ holiday dresses because we get so many of the them,” Clark noted.

In the other half of the multipurpose room, shoppers will find tables of toddler games and electronics and a separate area for baby equipment and accessories. One of the hallways will be lined with books so people can look at the selections while they are waiting in line to get to the register. Credit cards will be accepted at the sale, along with checks and cash. There will also be an express lane for shoppers with 10 or fewer items. Refreshments, including baked goods, will be available for purchase, with proceeds to benefit the BHHSA. A nominal donation will be asked for each item. Consignors at the sales receive the

majority of the proceeds, while the remaining percentage goes to the BHHSA. Proceeds will be used for educational enrichment programs for the students, such as assemblies, cultural events, workshops, education resources, field trips and special school-wide social activities. “We help teachers with back-to-school supplies at the beginning of the year, and we have a teacher appreciation lunch at the end of the school year,” Clark added. For more information about the sale at Bradford Heights Elementary School, readers may email bhogsale@gmail.com or visit www.bhogsale.com or www.face book.com/dasdbh and click on “Events.”
