From January through April this year, Girl Scout Lizzy Stahelek organized dance parties for children of all ages with special needs as part of a service project in conjunction with pursuing the Girl Scout Silver Award. The dances were so successful that Lizzy has decide to continue the parties this fall. The dance parties, themed “Everybody In,” will be held at Grove United Methodist Church, 490 W. Boot Road, West Chester. Dances will be held several times
each month beginning on Saturday, Sept. 28, from 10 to 11 a.m. Lizzy’s younger sister, Ally, who has special needs, was the inspiration for the project. “Kids can dance their own way and enjoy the music in their own way,” said Lizzy. “The kids will not have to follow dance steps; it will be a dance party.” Lizzy said that between 16 and 20 participants attended the dances held earlier this year. They were accompanied by volunteers, including Lizzy’s friends and family

and golf passes; and gift cards to local restaurants,” said event chair Amy Pippin. “We will also have some kitchen items, like a kitchen gift basket, and ceramic wall hangers and art supplies. We will have a gift card to Wyncote Golf Club for golf or the restaurant.” Fresh produce will be offered in the live auction as well as wheat straw, fine art, pet food and more. “For the live auction, I have a handmade quilt, hand-braided rugs, pumpkins, mums and mushrooms,” said Pippin. “We will have some equine (supplies) and donations from various 4-H clubs. This year, we will have a Movie Basket in the live auction with a gift card to a movie theater.” A returning attraction this year will be a cash-only table. “Basically, you can just purchase items from the table directly,” explained Pippin. “New this year will be 2019 reusable grocery bags that say Chester County 4-H Center on them.” Youth members from local 4-H clubs donate items they have purchased or made for gift baskets. Additionally, 4-H youths will provide assistance during the auction, serving as runners and helping display items for auctioneer Bill McCauley. 4-H members and their families also help gather donated items. “I start sending out (donation) letters in July and August, and some of the 4-H members follow up with businesses in the area,” Pippin said. “Older 4-H members or parents who take a couple of kids (will also pick up items). The donors love it when the kids come.” The Dairy Cart will also be on-site throughout the auction to offer refreshments, including milkshakes and ice cream.
“We will also have pulled pork sandwiches, macaroni and cheese and, new this year, walking tacos,” Pippin said, noting that there will also be a baked goods table and beverages, including soda, water and coffee. “There will also be combo meals where you can get a (main dish) and a baked good and a beverage (for a fee),” she said. Organizers are seeking donations for the auction, including handmade items, farm products, antiques, gift certificates, collectibles and artwork. Especially needed are larger items for the live auction. People may drop off items at the 4-H Center on Wednesday and Thursday, Sept. 25 and 26, from 6 to 8 p.m. and on Friday, Sept. 27, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Volunteers are also needed to provide assistance on the day of the auction. Those interested in volunteering are asked to contact Pippin at amygrace pippin@gmail.com or Toni Stuetz, 4-H educator, at tstuetz@psu.edu. Proceeds from the auction will be used to help support the cost of maintaining the 4-H Romano Center. “The 4-H Center is free to use for all the 4-H clubs in Chester County,” Pippin noted. The 4-H Center contains restroom facilities and meeting rooms, as well as a large exhibition and activity area. It is used during the annual 4-H Fair, along with the livestock building that houses the swine, dairy and goat exhibits. bottles.” Additional bottles were recently uncovered when AQUA PA replaced old water pipes along Oakland Drive. “I asked the work crew to keep their eyes open for bottles in front of my post box,” Lustig said. “As they did find bottles, they became more enthused to be part of the search and found a large variety. As they went on to the next house digging, they didn’t find any bottles at all. It’s very odd that they seem to be concentrated on my property.” Coincidentally, Lustig has spent his life collecting brown bottles, which he uses as See Local History pg 3

In 2019, more than 1,800 households received free tax preparation through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program in Chester County. VITA is seeking volunteers for 2020. VITA is a program of the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and is offered across the United States in thousands of sites each year. The VITA program just celebrated its 50th anniversary. Families and individuals who need help filing but who cannot afford to pay a preparer are encouraged to use VITA’s free services. Volunteers ensure that low- and moderateincome families are educated on frequently missed credits they may be eligible for, like the Earned Income Tax Credit and Child Tax Credit. These credits and deductions may reduce a taxpayer’s liabilities and increase their refund. Since 2004, Life Transforming Ministries (LTM) in Coatesville has partnered with the IRS to operate sites in Chester County. LTM began with a few volunteers preparing 15 returns in 2004; recently, more than 100 volunteers prepared 1,877 free returns, generating $3.3 million in refunds. All returns are electronically prepared and filed at no cost to the taxpayer. The VITA program is a short-term community outreach opportunity that benefits low- and moderate-income households
and offers flexible volunteer hours during the day, evening, and weekend. No prior experience is necessary. People from all walks of life are trained and volunteer through VITA. Opportunities in Chester County are available in Coatesville, Downingtown, Exton, Phoenixville, and West Chester. Free IRS certification training, including Continuing Education credit for legal professionals, is available in a classroom setting or online. Volunteers will become acquainted with the program and assisted in achieving the certification needed for their desired role. There are multiple roles available, such as greeter, basic tax preparer, advanced tax preparer, quality reviewer, site coordinator, IT helper, and interpreter. Enrollment for volunteers is underway. Registration is available by visiting www.ChesterCountyFreeTaxes.org and clicking on the registration link at the bottom of the page. For more information, readers may call the VITA office at 610-3809099 or email dlaird@quietrevolution.org.

More than 80 people gathered at St. John’s Episcopal Church, Compass, to celebrate the congregation’s 290th anniversary on Sept. 15. The service included a Mass of Confirmation and Holy Eucharist, led by the Right Rev. Daniel G. P. Gutierrez XVI, bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Pennsylvania. Gutierrez was assisted by the Rev. Joan Wylie, deacon at the Episcopal Church of the Holy Trinity, Coatesville. Organist Richard Hacker and the choir offered three anthems, and the guest trumpeter was Vinnie Shickora of Parkesburg. Three adults who were not originally Episcopalians were confirmed into the church. They are Gail Smith and James Hershey, both of Parkesburg, and Liz Palwick-Goebel of Lancaster. The parish received congratulatory proclamations from Gov. Tom Wolf and U.S. Sen Pat Toomey and the Pennsylvania State Senate. The proclamations were read aloud during the service. State Sen. Katie Muth was in attendance. A historic pewter Communion set dating from 1766 was used during the Mass. A luncheon and time of fun and fellowship followed the historic church service. Shoppers looking for bargains and treasures are invited to attend the Community Yard Sale to be held on Saturday, Sept. 28, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Borough of Parkesburg. During the day, homeowners from throughout the area will hold yard sales at their homes. Maps of the yard sale locations will be published and available on Thursday, Sept. 26. Individuals may obtain a map by emailing Wendy Keegan, borough secretary, at wakeegan@parkesburg.org or by visiting www.parkesburg.org. Maps will also be available on Saturday morning outside the door at the borough offices, 315 W. First Ave., Building 1, Parkesburg. One year, however, nearly 50 residents took part. “We hold yard sales the last week in April and the last week in September. (The tradition) started in the early 2000s,” said Keegan, noting that residents do not have to purchase a permit to participate in the yard sale.
She said that creating a map of yard sale sites makes it easier for shoppers. “I attend Chester County Day and they provide a map, so I thought we should do the same thing,” Keegan said. Residents who live outside of Parkesburg Borough are also encouraged to shop at the yard sales. For more information, readers may email Keegan or call her at 610-857-2616. Two distributions are held each month - on the second Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and on the fourth Wednesday from 4 to 6:30 p.m. The pantry, which is operated by the Chester County Food Bank, offers nonperishable food items, beef and poultry, dairy products and fresh produce to residents of Chester County living in the Twin Valley School District or the immediate surrounding area. She explained that the students who received the backpacks are from the Honey Brook and Twin Valley elementary centers. The students are chosen for the program by the school nurse. “The children remain anonymous,” Frank explained. “If families have four children or more, they get two backpacks. We serve approximately 80 children each year when school is in session.” Volunteer mothers from each of the schools come to the pantry to fill the backpacks twice each month. In October, there will be three distributions. “We have all the food set out, and the moms come and fill the backpacks,” said Frank. “The moms take the backpacks back to the school nurse, and she gives them to the kids, who take the backpacks home on Fridays.” The food items are stored in backpacks so that other students in the school are unaware that the family is in need of food. “They are plain black backpacks so no one can bully (the students) or make fun of them,” Frank said. “It takes time to pull the food together, but it’s so rewarding. Some of our families live in a hotel and have a hot plate and microwave. We do our best to help them.” The backpacks are filled with at least 15 healthy nonperishable items like peanut butter and juices, as well as tuna and chicken, which can now be purchased in foil packages. “Sometimes (the recipients) are only in first or second grade, so it can’t be loaded with cans,” Frank noted. “We try to
