Good Samaritan, with locations in Ephrata, Lancaster, Coatesville, and Phoenixville, was founded as the Good Samaritan Shelter in 2002 when several Phoenixville-area churches joined forces to help area residents who were struggling, especially with housing. homeless shelter to as many as 35 women and children per day. The Phoenixville shelter for single men can also house 35. The Lancaster and Coatesville offices focus on permanent housing. “Our staff (in those offices) help single mothers stay in their (homes),” explained Hoffer. “Our program will step in with rental assistance to keep (a mother and) her children in housing to prevent them from having to come to the shelter.” Hoffer added that the process of being uprooted and moved to a shelter is especially difficult on children, who may struggle with poor academic performance and even health issues related to homelessness. Hoffer noted that Good Samaritan may spend up to $9,000 per month in rental assistance helping people stay in their homes, translating to serving up to 65 children each day through its programs. According to Hoffer, the Good Samaritan model utilizes a holistic approach that includes financial assistance, professional social workers, and mentor volunteers from local churches to surround a single mother with support. “We do weekly budgeting, life coaching, and mentoring (with our clients),” said Hoffer, who added that the children the organization serves receive help as well. “We help children learn to read and write,” he said. “We focus on building the literacy skills to give (children) the tools they need to succeed.” The Ephrata shelter can accommodate a woman and her children from six months up to two years, giving the family the time necessary to secure affordable housing. Hoffer added that unfortunately about 60 to 70 percent of the families living in

Hoffer noted that one of the most valuable resources Good Samaritan can give to its clients is time. “We have professional social workers to help clients Nate Hoffer, executive director achieve their goals, but that takes time,” of Good Samaritan Services, said Hoffer. “There are often a number of recently spoke at a meeting of issues (involved) that can’t be fixed in a the New Holland Area Kiwanis week. The West Nantmeal Township Historical Commission will present “Stoke the Furnace,” featuring a 5K walk and run and a 10K run as part of the township’s Community Day celebration on Saturday, Sept. 29. Registration will open at 8 a.m. in the West Nantmeal Township Community Park, 455 N. Manor Road, Elverson, and the races will begin at 9 a.m. There will also be a free fun run for children in the park at 10:15 a.m. The 5K and 10K will take participants by several ponds and past historic stone homes and over century-old stone bridges that cross the Brandywine River. The 10K will continue on past Isabella Furnace. Both courses will have a water station. The entire route will be closed to traffic during the event. Children in strollers and leashed dogs are welcome to accompany participants in the 5K event. The races will be professionally timed, and water and healthy snacks will be provided to runners after the race. Awards will be presented to the overall male and female winners, as well as to the top three male and female finishers in each of the following age brackets: 18 and under, 19 to 29, 30 to 39, 40 to 49, 50 to 59, 60 to 69 and 70 and over. Proceeds from registration fees will

be used for the restoration of an historic hand-built dry-stone wall located throughout the township. “A demonstration from a stone wall builder will be featured from noon to 2 p.m. (on Community Day),” noted Carol Haag, a member of the township’s historical commission. “He is the same stone mason who is redoing the wall.” According to Haag, the stone wall was built locally by employees of Isabella Furnace. The wall starts at the furnace site at Bollinger and Creek roads, follows Bollinger Road and turns right onto Isabella Road to the Langoma Mansion, which was the home built by ironmaster Joseph Potts. Langoma is now St. Mary of Providence Retreat Center and a home for senior citizens. Haag said that the wall is the longest, continuous, hand-built stone wall in the country. The wall’s construction was originally financed by William Potts, Joseph’s son, who wanted to keep the furnace workers employed even when the Isabella Furnace was no longer in operation. For more information and to register, readers may visit www.westnant mealsept23.wixsite.com/westnant meal and select “5K/10K Run” or www.pretzelcitysports.com/race -applications and scroll down to “09/29/18, Elverson, PA - Stoke the Furnace 5K and 10K Run.”

A consignment sale is held at PJP II twice each year, in the fall and again in the spring. For the upcoming sale, season-appropriate attire will be offered. “We will have winter coats, hats, boots and snowsuits,” said Fuller. “We will have racks with boys’ and girls’ holiday clothing like girls’ sparkly dresses. We also usually get a lot of Halloween costumes.” Also offered for sale will be First Communion dresses, as well as toys and books, electronics and sporting equipment, including bicycles, scooters, ice skates and inline skates. Organizers make every effort to keep the checkout lines moving, so there is less of a wait for shoppers. “We will have 10 checkout lines, including two express lines,” Fuller noted. Only cash or checks will be accepted at the sale. Fuller said that items sold at the sale are in good used condition. “We don’t take anything with rips or stains. We go through every item to make sure it’s OK. If it’s not OK, we’ll remove it and return it to the consignor. We (also) make sure all the toys work.” Parent volunteers help run the event with help from PJP II sixth-, seventh- and eighth-graders. The youths provide assistance with cleanup and setup, which includes transporting items to the second floor, where the gym is located. “They do a lot of the heavy lifting. They take the tables and chairs upstairs and help consignors bring in their items,” Fuller noted. “Some of the kids stay after school to help us and some of the teachers let them come and help us at the end

of the school day (on Friday).” At the conclusion of the sale, sellers will have the option of taking back their unsold merchandise. Goods that the consignors do not take with them will be donated to charity. The Kids’ Fall Outgrown Sale is open to the public, and admission is free. All proceeds will benefit the students of PJP II. PJP II serves students in kindergarten through eighth grade from four local churches - St. Peter in West Brandywine, Our Lady of the Rosary in Coatesville, St. Joseph in Coatesville and Our Lady of Consolation in Parkesburg. The school also offers a prekindergarten program for children ages 3 and 4. New this year at PJP II is Little Saints Academy Child Care. Fuller is the director of the child care center, which operates year-round (12 months) from 6:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Programs are offered for infants and toddlers up to 36 months. Flexible schedules are available, including two-, three- and five-day options. “We have rolling enrollment, so (parents) can enroll their children any time of the year,” Fuller added. PJP II is located at 2875 Manor Road (Route 82), West Brandywine. For more information, readers may contact the PJP II development office at 610-384-5961, ext. 5408, or email PJPIIoutgrown sale@gmail.com. Details are also available at www.popejohn paul2sch.org/kids-outgrown-sale and www.facebook.com/PJPIISchoolWest Brandywine.

Bradford Heights from pg 1 11:30 a.m., and the doors will reopen from noon to 1 p.m. for a 50-percent-off sale on select items. The sale will feature gently used children’s clothing, as well as toys, books, maternity clothing and more. “Right now, we have 85 consignors,” said Carolyn Clark, who co-chairs the Bradford Heights Outgrown Sale Committee along with Ellen Beears and Heike Evans. “It is a good amount of inventory without being overcrowded.” The BHHSA has held sales twice annually for the past 10 years, including a spring sale and a fall/winter sale. For the upcoming event, seasonal items will be featured. “We will have coats, boots, mittens, gloves, hats, snowsuits and snow pants, plus Halloween costumes,” said Clark. “We will have holiday dresses for girls and special occasion attire for boys as well. They will be set out on a separate rack.” The sale will take place in the all-purpose room at the school. Clothing will be sorted into girls’ and boys’ sections and then cateogrized by size from newborn through tweens, up to size 16. “There will also be separate sections for toddler games and electronics and a separate area for baby equipment and accessories,” noted Clark. “One of the hallways is lined with books so people can look at the books while they are waiting in line to get to the register.” Every effort is made to keep the checkout lines running smoothly. Credit cards will be accepted, along with checks and cash. “We added an express lane for

SAY YOU SAW IT IN THE Community Courier

people who don’t end up buying a lot of things,” Clark noted. Refreshments, including baked goods, will be available for purchase, with proceeds to benefit the BHHSA. Consignors at the sales receive the majority of the proceeds, while the remaining percentage goes to the BHHSA. Proceeds are used for educational enrichment programs for the students, such as assemblies and field trips. “We help offset the cost of school supplies at the beginning of the year for the teachers,” Clark added. “We also have teacher appreciation lunches at the end of the school year.” For more information about the sale at Bradford Heights Elementary School, readers may visit www.bhogsale.com or email bhogsale@gmail.com.

Workforce BEP Grants Available Local workforce development boards can apply for $2.5 million in Business-Education Partnership (BEP) grants that will connect businesses and school districts in an effort to expand career opportunities across Pennsylvania. The deadline to apply is Wednesday, Oct. 31. The funding is available through the Department of Labor and Industry to local workforce development boards, which are regional entities that direct federal, state, and local

funding to workforce development programs in their areas. These partnerships connect schools, employers, parents, and students to provide career-related experiences and opportunities through soft-skills development, internships, workplace shadowing, and career mentoring, all with the goal of engaging more students in the need for technical skills required by employers. Additional details and the grant application can be found at www.dli.pa.gov.

Elk Cam Goes Live The Pennsylvania Game Commission again has installed a camera on State Game Lands 311 in a field in Elk County that typically is a hub of elk activity as the bugling season this fall heats up. Video and sound from the camera are being live-streamed at www.pgc.pa.gov, and viewers can expect not only to see elk, but also turkeys, deer, and other wildlife. The live stream is the latest in a string of real-time wildlife-watching opportunities offered by the

PA Game Commission. The page also contains information on Pennsylvania’s elk, where to view them, and links to the Pennsylvania Great Outdoors website, which includes all sorts of helpful information for anyone visiting elk country. The live stream is slated to run until the end of the bugling season, likely sometime in mid-October. The top time to see elk on camera is late in the afternoon.

Fogging of the lenses can be a problem when a person is active. Some eye protection options are available with anti-fog coating. Others have side vents for additional ventilation. Shoppers should try on different types to determine which is most comfortable for them. Shoppers should check an eye protector’s packaging to see if the item has been tested for sports use and if it is made of polycarbonate material. Polycarbonate eye protection is the most impact resistant. Sports eye protection should be padded or cushioned along the brow and bridge of the nose. Padding will prevent the eye guards from cutting the skin. Athletes should try on eye protectors to determine if they are the right size. The strap should be adjusted so it is not too tight or too loose. Athletes should consult their eye care professional to ensure eye protectors have a comfortable, safe fit. During Sports Eye Safety Awareness Month, Prevent Blindness is offering printed materials to assist eye care professionals in educating consumers on the importance of eye safety during sports. To request a free kit, readers may contact Angela Gerber at 973-882-0986, ext. 972, or agerber@libertysport.com. For more information on sports eye injury prevention or contact lens safety, readers may call Prevent Blindness at 800-331-2020 or visit www.preventblindness.org/sports -eye-safety.

Prevent Blindness, an eye health organization, has declared September as Sports Eye Safety Awareness Month to help educate the public on the need to protect vision while participating in sports activities. New annual data from Prevent Blindness shows that more than 33,000 Americans were treated for sportsrelated eye injuries last year. Eye injuries from any sport may include infection, corneal abrasions, fracture of the eye socket, swollen or detached retinas or a traumatic cataract. Eye injuries from water sports may include eye infections and irritations, and scratches or trauma from other swimmers. As part of September’s Sports Eye Safety Awareness Month, Prevent Blindness has posted tips on buying sports eye protectors. Shoppers should always consult an eye care professional to get the best eye protection for their sport and lifestyle. Wearers of prescription glasses should ask their eye doctor to fit them for prescription eye protection. Monocular athletes, those with only one eye that sees well, should ask their eye doctor what sports they may safely play. Athletes should not buy eye protection without lenses. Only lensed protectors are recommended for sports use. Athletes should make sure the lenses either stay in place or pop outward in the event of an accident. Lenses that pop in against the eyes may cause serious injury.
