ARRIVING LATE?

She said the day is planned to be non-stressful. “Families look forward to it because some kids can only handle a certain amount of stimulation,” McClintock pointed out. “Some of the big festivals are busy and have thousands of people and can be overwhelming to children. “Two years ago, we had 400 people attend, but it didn’t feel busy because activities are spread across the ballfield,” she added. “Families can know their children are safe and be able to meet new friends who understand and support them.” She said that sometimes attendees, both children and adults, become friends after experiencing play day together. “We have one mom who comes every year, and her son is now a volunteer,” McClintock reported. “He made his first friend (at play day) and she made a lifelong friend in that child’s mom. That’s what it’s about - feeling supported and having opportunities to connect with other parents. When you (meet) someone who walks that road with you, you don’t feel so alone.” Volunteers, especially occupational therapists and college students who are involved in a related field of study, are needed to help out at the event. Volunteers must have background clearances. Prospective volunteers are asked to email McClintock at sensory playday@gmail.com to learn about volunteer opportunities. Sensory Play Day will take place rain or shine. In the event of inclement weather, some activities will be moved to Forks of the Brandywine Presbyterian Church. Preregistration is encouraged. To register, readers may visit www.sensoryplayday.com or www.forkschurch.org or email sensoryplayday@gmail.com.

climbing wall, a bungee run, team games, pony rides and hayrides and a nature trail. “A new activity is the construction zone,” she added. “We will have Legos and magnetics and different things kids can use to construct. That crosses different age groups.” Other activities will include an obstacle course moon bounce, face painting and crafts. There will be live animals on hand, including sheep and a pony. Lunch, including hot dogs and chicken nuggets, will be provided, along with vegetables and some gluten-free items. “If children have specific diets, families should bring something for them,” McClintock noted. There will be live music, including a performance by the Folkie Dokies; Mr. Spaghetti, who plays the guitar and banjo; harpist Marian Gans; and a magician. Children will also have an opportunity to try out various musical instruments. The day is open to children with physical and mental challenges, giving them an opportunity to enjoy activities with their siblings and other children from the community. Last year, 68 families participated. “Parents must accompany and supervise their children,” McClintock noted. “Families are encouraged to bring other caregivers, relatives or friends to give them emotional and behavioral support.” McClintock said that the day has become a tradition for many local families. “We have a number of kids who have gone to the play day since they were 5 and now they are 15,” she said, noting that this is the 10th year for the play day. “Some come (back) as volunteers, and others are still coming to participate.”

that larger sizes of T-shirts and underwear are especially needed. Representatives from the charity, including founder and president David Turner Sr., will have a booth at the event where visitors can drop off their donations. “We are happy that they are partnering with us again,” said East Fallowfield Township manager Scott Swichar. “For many homeless veterans, basic items like clean underwear or socks are considered a luxury item out of reach to them.” For those who cannot attend Park Day, donations can be dropped off at the East Fallowfield Township Building, 2264 Strasburg Road, Coatesville, during the month of October. David’s Drive 831 was created in memory of David Turner Jr., who was born and raised in East Fallowfield Township. David worked at the Coatesville VA, where he learned that many of the veterans he served did not have necessities like underwear and socks. David wanted to buy every veteran at the VA a pair of underwear, but he never had the chance. On Dec. 16, 2009, David died at

the age of 20 of a suspected heart arrhythmia. In 2010, family and friends of David created a nonprofit organization to fulfill his wish. Since then, more than $400,000 worth of underwear has been donated to the Coatesville VA. More information about David’s Drive is available at www.davidsdrive831.org and www.facebook.com/davids.drive. Park Day will feature free child-friendly activities, including a zip-line, moon bounces, face painting, hayrides, children’s train rides and a petting zoo. There will also be clown offering balloon animals, along with music and a chance to win prizes. A Halloween costume parade will take place in the park at 10:30 a.m. for children up to age 12. Goodie bags will be provided to participants while supplies last. Pony rides will be offered from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Food vendors will be on hand, and there will booths set up by local crafters, as well as nonprofit organizations, such as the Brandywine Red Clay Alliance, Friends of Coatesville Library, Coatesville Area School District, Merge With Mercy Foundation,

Harpist Marian Gans (right) will be on hand and children will be able to try out musical instruments at the Sensory Play Day being offered by Forks of the Brandywine Evangelical Presbyterian Church.

A rock wall will be one of the activities that children with special needs can enjoy during the Sensory Play Day on Oct. 13. Hearts in Hand Community Center, Kacie’s Cause and others. Fire companies, including Modena and Westwood, will offer cut-a-car rescue demonstrations, and there will be an appearance by Subby the Helicopter and police K-9 unit. “This is our largest signature event for the township, and we utilize the whole park,” said Swichar, noting that the event is not limited to township residents. “It’s open to the community; we welcome residents from all over.

It is a great opportunity for the community to enjoy entertainment at a free venue.” For more information about Park Day, readers may call the township office at 610-384-7144 or visit www.eastfallowfield.org or www.facebook.com/east fallowfieldtownship. Those who would like to volunteer at the event are asked to contact Katherine Archibald, administrative assistant, by calling the township office or emailing KArchibald@eastfallowfield.org.

Local business sponsors made it possible for David’s Drive 831 to purchase a truck to carry donations to the Coatesville Veterans Affairs Medical Center. Donations of socks, underwear and Tshirts will be collected during East Fallowfield’s Park Day on Oct. 13 and at the township building during the month of October.

Apple Festival from pg 1 Renny S. Sardella, O.D.

One of the most popular dishes offered at the Hay Creek Apple Festival on Oct. 13 and 14 is apple dumplings. The dumplings, purchased frozen, can be reheated at home and enjoyed later, or people may eat fresh apple dumplings topped with ice cream on-site. This year, people may buy dumplings, pies and crisps in advance of the festival on Oct. 12. Children will especially enjoy being able to ride on the popular Apple Barrel Express. A popular activity from the Hay Creek Festival will be offered as well. “Our children’s archaeological simulation activity is new to the Apple Festival,” said Zerr. “For a (nominal) fee, kids can break open a mud pie and find some items inside and charcoal like what would have been found at the site.” The site’s buildings will be open, and re-enactors in historical garb will be on hand at each location, including the blacksmith shop, the blowing engine, the casting house, the office/store and the charcoal house museum. Historic Joanna Furnace Iron Works is located off Route 10, 3 miles north of Morgantown. Attendees should access the site via

Furnace Road. Admission to the Hay Creek Apple Festival is free. Parking will be available on-site by donation. All proceeds will support HCVHA’s educational and restoration efforts at Joanna Furnace. For more information, readers may visit www.haycreek.org or call 610-286-0388. Pictured on front: George Loughery IV (right photo), a member of the Hay Creek Valley Historical Association, operated the Apple Barrel Express last year at the Hay Creek Apple Festival, and Louise Griffiths (left photo) offered apple dumplings and pies for sale. This year’s event, featuring an assortment of apple dishes, a flea market, children’s activities and more, will be held on Oct. 13 and 14 at Joanna Furnace Iron Works.

Thorndale UMC from pg 1 celebration, “The Ties That Bind,” the worship center has been decorated with strips of fabric tied together. Tied fabric is also on display in the church sanctuary. “The congregation has been weaving ribbon, yarn and fabric, and I have been preaching on (the statement) ‘We’ve all been created and woven together by God,’” said Ridge. According to a written history of the church, members began meeting informally in 1847 in a small two-story building, which they quickly outgrew. The first church building was completed 140 years ago in 1878 on Lincoln Highway (Business Route 30), not far from where the present-day church building is located. Fifty years later, a plot of four acres was donated to the church, and the groundbreaking for the present location took place in 1928. “ We have two cornerstones at this church, the cornerstone from 1928 when this church was built and the cornerstone from the (original) building from 1878,” Ridge noted. The older cornerstone is located in the west wall of the current church narthex. Ridge noted that when the congregation moved into the new building, it marched from the old church to the new one. “The church (congregation) all

marched together down Lincoln Highway singing ‘Onward Christian Soldiers,’” she said. “There have been several additions throughout the years,” she added. “The last significant building (project) took place in 1998 when we built the worship center.” Ridge said that through the years the church has maintained its mission to serve the community. The building is open to support groups, including Alcoholics Anonymous and Al-Anon, and the church maintains raised-bed gardens that grow produce for the Chester County Food Bank. “ We are community-minded and mission-oriented,” said Ridge. “We believe in faith in action.” She said that the church actively supports Caln Elementary School. “ We just did a school supply drive and delivered four boxes of school supplies to the elementary school,” Ridge pointed out. “At Christmastime, we do a Giving Tree for the school and work with the school counselor to identify families in need.” The church is also active with Caln Little League, whose fields border the church property. The church sponsors a team in the league, and the pastor provides a prayer on opening day.

Joanna Furnace Iron Works, 1250 Furnace Road, Geigertown, will be the site of annual Hay Creek Valley Historical Association (HCVHA) Apple Festival on Saturday, Oct. 13, from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, Oct. 14, from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Additionally, the site’s mule stable will be open on Friday, Oct. 12, where people can purchase apple pies, apple dumplings and apple crisps in advance of the festival. “The Apple Festival will not be open on Oct. 12. However, the site will be open from noon to 5 p.m. for bulk food purchase and pickup,” explained Mark Zerr, HCVHA president. “It’s a way for people to get things before the official opening starts on Saturday. This way you can take (the apple dishes) home and put them in the freezer or thaw, reheat and eat.” On Oct. 13 and 14, the event will start with an all-you-can-eat apple pancake breakfast, which will be served from 7 to 11 a.m. Apple treats available throughout the weekend will include apple dumplings, apple pies, apple crisp, homemade caramel apples with various toppings, apple sausage sandwiches, apple fritters, and the local traditional schnitz un knepp (apples, dumplings and ham). The 19th-century Joanna Furnace apple cider press will

be operating each day. Visitors can purchase freshly pressed cider by the cup or by the gallon to take home. Mabel’s Iron-Kettle Soups, cooked over actual open fires, will include chicken corn, beef vegetable and ham and bean with rivels (small dumplings). The soups will be available by the quart for takeout and can be frozen to be eaten later. Because the final day of the Hay Creek Festival in September was canceled due to rain, the Apple Festival will offer the public an additional opportunity to buy soup. “A lot of people were disappointed that they missed out on our soup in September, so we will have extra for the Apple Festival,” said Zerr. Non-apple menu items will include chicken potpie, which will also available by the quart for takeout, as well as pulled pork sandwiches, hamburgers, hot dogs, french fries and beverages. A flea market will be open both days. Those interested in renting a flea market or craft stand should call Kathleen at 610-914-8152 for details. “Everybody loves to shop at our flea market,” Zerr noted. “We have 50 stands reserved already.” Numerous family activities will be held during two-day festival, including face painting, pumpkin painting and early American games, along with hayrides and pony rides and a petting zoo.

East Brandywine To Host Harvest Festival East Brandywine Parks and Recreation will host a Fall Harvest Festival and concert on Sunday, Oct. 14, at the East Brandywine Community Park, 440 Dilworth Road, Downingtown. The day will begin at noon with a costume parade for children age 12 and under. Following the parade, activities will include pumpkin painting, a Goin’ Fishing game, a trunk-ortreat by the Brandywine Wallace Home and School Association, an apple walk, face painting, cornhole games, giant checkers and more. A food truck will also be onsite.

Scarecrow building will also be offered. Participants should bring a pair of child-size pants and shirt; the remainder of the materials will be provided. A disc jockey will provide music from noon to 2 p.m. From 2 to 4 p.m., a live concert by the Walton Marquette Project will be featured. The Downingtown-based rock band will play a mix of electric and acoustic classic, country, pop and Americana from the mid-’70’s, ’80’s and ’90’s. For more information, readers may visit www.ebrandywine.org.

Presentation To Focus On Opioids

Thorndale United Methodist Church, 3503 Lincoln Highway (Business Route 30), Thorndale, will celebrate its 140th anniversary with a special service and brunch on Oct. 14. “I am grateful to be serving the community at this time,” said Ridge, who was named pastor of TUMC approximately a year ago. She noted that she will soon travel to Puerto Rico to help with hurricane relief. “It’s my hope that I will take a team from here next year,” she said. Ridge said that all are welcome at TUMC on Oct. 14 to attend worship, enjoy brunch and view the church sanctuary. “We want to be a place of worship for all people,” she added. TUMC is located at 3503 Lincoln Highway, Thorndale. For more information, readers may call the church office at 610-384-2433 or visit www.thorndaleumc.org.

Recycle-Bowl Competition Posted Registration is open for the 2018 Recycle-Bowl. Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful encourages educators in Pennsylvania to get their students involved in Keep America Beautiful’s Recycle-Bowl competition, which is a program designed to revitalize student participation in recycling through a national recycling competition for students in kindergarten through 12th grade. The objectives of the competi-

tion include the establishment of new recycling programs within schools, the increase of recycling rates in schools that currently recycle, and the provision of teacher/student educational opportunities about recycling and waste reduction. The Recycle-Bowl competition will run from Monday, Oct. 15, through America Recycles Day, Thursday, Nov. 15.

In 2017, Albert M. Greenfield School in Philadelphia was named State School Division Champion of the Recycle-Bowl. Students and faculty of Albert M. Greenfield School collected 11,536 pounds of recyclables generated from within the school during the competition. More than 1,000 elementary, middle, and high schools in 42 states around the country participated in this race to collect the

most recyclable material and learn about waste reduction and environmental responsibility through in-school recycling. Two million pounds of material were collected for recycling by the more than 550,000 participating students, teachers, and administrators. Supervised child care for children in prekindergarten through third grade will be provided at a nominal fee from 9 a.m. to noon. Proceeds from both the breakfast and the children’s activities and child care will support the eighth-grade mission trip to West Virginia. The auction will begin at 9 a.m. on Oct. 20. Featured items will include handmade quilts, artwork, vacation and travel packages,

indoor and outdoor furnishings, sports tickets, collectibles, nursery stock, home and garden items, gift baskets and more. “ We have lots of Eagles authenticated items this year,” WFCS public relations director Kim Hoffman said. “ We also have a lovely quilt that was pieced together by a great-grandmother from the second-grade class last year.” Food will be available, including soup, hot dogs, walking tacos, nachos, pizza, burgers and soft pretzels. There will be a baked goods table with homemade cakes, pies, apple dumplings and more. WFCS is located at 795 Fallowfield Road, Atglen. For more information, readers may call the school office at 610-593-5011 or visit www.facebook.com/west fallowfieldchristianschool or www.wfcs.org. Marsh Creek Community Church, 101 Crump Road, Exton, will host Parenting 101, a new workshop that will help parents navigate the challenges of parenting and help families thrive, on Saturday, Oct. 13, from 9 a.m. to noon. The three-part workshop will focus on topics including creating healthy relationships, communication, and connecting as a couple related to parenting. It will also focus on how people pick up negative messages or feelings of shame

about themselves and how by identifying these things they can change the narrative for future generations. There will be breakout groups for parents of children and parents of teenagers. Questions may be submitted in advance when registering for the workshop. There is a cost for the conference, which includes a copy of the book “12 Huge Mistakes Parents Can Avoid.” Registration is available at www.marshcreekchurch .org/events/.

This year, the 36th annual West Fallowfield Christian School (WFCS) auction is being paired with the inaugural Falcon 5K and 1-mile Fun Run/Walk. The 5K and Fun Run/Walk will take place Friday, Oct. 19, starting at 5:15 p.m. Registration will begin at 4 p.m. on race day, or participants may preregister by Tuesday, Oct. 16, at www.wfcs.org/5K. All 5K entrants who preregister will receive a T-shirt and a fast-food chicken sandwich at the completion of the run. Fun Run participants have the option to preorder a sandwich when they register online. Individuals who are not participating in the run or walk may call the school office to preorder a sandwich for a fee at 610-593-5011. Those who register on race day for either event will receive T-shirts while supplies last. No sandwiches will be available unless preordered. The 5K will be an out-andback course on the road, with two slight hills and rural scenery. There will be awards for the topfinishing male and female, as well as awards for seven different age groups. The Fun Run/Walk will take

place on campus. No pets will be permitted; however, children in strollers equipped to travel on grass are welcome. Proceeds will benefit the Academy at WFCS, a high school program that currently serves students in grades nine through 11 with a college-style program of classroom courses that supplement and support homeschooled students. This year, the Academy has added electives and a Spanish course. “(The Academy is) not as well-known as the school, so this is an opportunity to get some exposure for the Academy. It’s also drawing the community in as well as our patrons and alumni,” said Academy teacher Kendra Ridgway. “Not everyone can do a 5K, but almost anybody can walk a mile or push a stroller. It’s meant to be a fun family evening that everybody can be part of.” Oct. 19 will also offer an opportunity to preview auction items that will be offered for sale the next day and to bid on a selection of silent auction items. “(The 5K) is a kickoff for the auction as well,” said race director Janice McIntyre. “I like the fitness component of it and the fellowship component of it and the fundraising. Commissioners Win Awards 30 years. Whiteman has used his talents on significant projects such as the construction of a justice center and a state-of-the-art public safety training campus, as well as the purchase of an emergency radio system. CCAP’s Outstanding Affiliate of the Year Award was presented to two Pennsylvania Association of County Administrators of Mental Health and Developmental Services members, Don Clark of Allegheny County and Dan Eisenhauer of Dauphin County, for their efforts in creating new options for counties to work collaboratively with the commonwealth in developing an improved county based management structure for community intellectual disability services. The 2018 Friend of County Government Award, the highest honor CCAP bestows on a nonmember, was presented to Maryann Nardone. Nardone, recently retired project manager for the Pennsylvania Legislative Budget and Finance Committee, a joint research arm of the Pennsylvania General Assembly, received the award for continued commitment to the improvement of county government by assisting CCAP and its members while maintaining the highest ethical and moral standards. Most recently, her applied research into county property assessment practices and her participation on the Local Government Commission’s Assessment Reform Task Force led to development of comprehensive reports,

legislation and practice documents for counties. CCAP’s 2018 Excellence in Website Design Awards were given to Bedford County and Chester County. Both counties’ recent website enhancements led to accessible, modern designs, with increased functionality, highlights of county services and greater transparency to improve residents’ interactions with county government. President’s Awards were bestowed by CCAP president and Lancaster County commissioner Dennis Stuckey to CCAP leaders Doug Hill, executive director; Brinda Penyak, deputy director; and John Sallade, managing director of insurance programs. The award was presented to honor commitment to CCAP’s president and outstanding contributions leading to enhanced service to county residents. CCAP is a statewide nonprofit, nonpartisan association representing all 67 counties in Pennsylvania. CCAP members include county commissioners, council members, county executives, administrators, chief clerks and solicitors. CCAP seeks to strengthen counties’ abilities to govern their own affairs and improve the well-being and quality of life for every Pennsylvania resident. It advocates for favorable state and federal legislation, programs and policies on behalf of counties. O’Donnell Earns Perfect Score On ACT The ACT is a curriculum-based achievement exam that measures what students have learned in school. The exam consists of tests in English, mathematics, reading, and science, each scored on a scale

of 1 to 36. A student’s composite score is the average of the four test scores. The score for the ACT’s optional writing test is reported separately and is not included within the ACT composite score.

On average, only approximately one-tenth of 1 percent of students who take the ACT earn a top score. ACT scores are accepted by all major four-year colleges and universities across the U.S.
