Wallace Township 5K Adds Challenge For Firefighters By Francine Fulton

This year’s Wallace Trust 5K “Run for the Woods,” the second annual, which will be held in Wallace Township on Saturday, Oct. 20, will feature an added component. The township has partnered with the Glen Moore Fire Company (GMFC), which is using the event as a fitness challenge. In conjunction with the Chester County Department of Emergency Services and the Chester County Fire Chiefs

Association, GMFC is asking firefighters to join the event and compete in the 5K wearing their firefighting gear, which is estimated to weigh between 40 and 60 pounds. “What we’re trying to do is call attention to firefighter fitness,” said Andy Chambers, GMFC assistant fire chief. “If you are going to be a firefighter and go into the building, you have to realize that you have to bring not only just your firefighting skills.” The event, which will also include a 1-mile walk, will take

place from 9 a.m. to noon in Wagenseller Park, 140 Park Lane, Glenmoore. To register, readers may visit www.run signup.com/Race/PA/Glen moore/WALLACETRUST5KRun fortheWoods. A link to register for the event is also available at w w w. f a c e b o o k . c o m / T h e WallaceTrust. Same-day registrations will also be accepted. All participants will receive an event T-shirt while supplies last. The 5K will be professionally timed, and water and snacks will be available before and after the event. See Wallace Trust 5K pg 5

Andy Chambers (left), assistant fire chief at the Glen Moore Fire Company, and Barbara D’Angelo, Wallace Township supervisor and president of the Wallace Trust, invite the community to take part in the Wallace Trust 5K “Run for the Woods” in Wagenseller Park on Oct. 20. A new addition to the event this year is the Glen Moore Fire Company fitness challenge, which is asking firefighters to compete in the 5K while wearing their gear.

Each year, millions of young children in impoverished countries receive shoeboxes full of gifts thanks to Operation Christmas Child (OCC), a program of the Samaritan’s Purse ministry. The local community had an opportunity to meet Jaki Steward, a former shoebox recipient, during a program presented on Oct. 6 at Gateway Church in Parkesburg. The program was hosted by Amy and Will Shaw of Chester Springs, who are the OCC area coordinators for the Greater Philadelphia Area Team, which includes Chester and Delaware counties. Miss Betty ran the school and the sale until her death at age 97 in 2003. As part of the cooperative aspect of the school, parents are asked to work in one of the classrooms one day per week throughout the school year. There is also a buyout program for working parents. “Our founder’s philosophy is now recognized as best practice for early childhood education, which is learning through play,” Koons noted. The school is open daily from 9 to 11:45 a.m. An extended-day program is offered until 2:45 p.m. There is also a lunch bunch option for children to stay, eat lunch and play until 1 p.m. Charlestown Playhouse was founded in 1936 by Elizabeth Foster Stonorov, who

Some goods sold at the sale are provided by consignors, and others are community donations, according to Faith Koons, director of the school. “People can consign at any point during the sale, or people can donate,” she said. “Everything that comes in we put out on the floor as soon as we get it priced and tagged.” She noted that about 300 consignors will have goods available at this year’s fall sale. Koons said the event is a popular local attraction that is held twice each year -

Additional bargains can be found on 50 Cent/50 Percent Day on Saturday, Oct. 27, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. On this day, items costing $5 or more will be 50 percent off, items regularly costing $1 to $4.99 will be 50 cents and items costing 99 cents or less will be 10 cents. Speaker from pg 1 Steward, 23, explained that when she was only a few months old she was left at an orphanage in Guatemala by her young mother. During Steward’s time at the orphanage, she lived with 70 to 80 other children. She said that one of the worst parts of the experience was sharing a toothbrush with 10 other girls. “At night, we lined up and passed that brush down the line,” she

noted. “Most of the time, we just used water (to brush), or occasionally, we brushed with soap.” She said her favorite memories of living in the orphanage were when American missionaries came to visit. “They came to spend time with us and they gave us hugs, and my favorite part was the candy they would bring us,” she said. “I loved how special they made us feel, and we got to eat something besides beans and rice, which is what we ate every day. When the missionaries came, we got spaghetti or pizza.” Steward recalled the day that she received her shoebox gift from OCC. “One day we were called into a big room, and I remember sitting there waiting to see what was going to happen,” she said. “As we looked around the room, we saw these boxes and then (volunteers) started handing them out. Every one of us was getting a gift. For a lot of us, we had never gotten a gift before. “Inside my box there were crayons and a stuffed animal, but my most favorite gift was getting my own toothbrush,” she added. “I knew that I didn’t have to share anymore.” Steward’s story also helps to illustrate why toothpaste is no longer allowed to be included in an OCC shoebox. “As I continued to dig further into my shoebox, I spotted a tube of something and I tasted it. I figured it was a type of American candy that I never had before, and I ate the whole thing,” Steward said. “They explained to me (later) that it was toothpaste.” Steward noted that the small gifts brought the children hours of joy. “The

boys loved their soccer balls and their toy cars and their marbles. We played with marbles by the hour in the dirt,” she remarked. “We colored every page in the books.” She also noted that letters, photos and cards from the families that filled the shoeboxes were also priceless. “A stranger had taken the time to pack this gift for me and they didn’t even know me,” she added. At the age of 6, Steward was adopted by an American family and two years later her parents adopted a boy from the same orphanage. Today, Steward is recently married and lives in Maryland. Three years ago she became a national speaker for OCC. “It’s been so much fun, but my favorite part is meeting the amazing volunteers behind the ministry. Without (the volunteers), there wouldn’t be stories like mine,” she stated. Prior to Steward’s talk, the Shaws conducted a trivia contest about OCC, giving prizes to the those who came up with the correct answers. They reported that the OCC program, now in its 25th year, has distributed 157 million shoeboxes since its inception. For those who would like to donate a shoebox, National Collection Week will be held from Monday, Nov. 12, through Monday, Nov. 19. Many local churches will accept shoebox gifts during that week. Medals will be awarded to the overall male and female winners of the 5K, as well as the first-, second- and third-place male and female winners of the 5K in various age groups. There will also be first-, second- and third-place awards for firefighters who are wearing gear. Proceeds from the registration fees will benefit the Wallace Trust, an all-volunteer group that is funded entirely by private donations. “The Wallace Trust was formed in order to hold easements on open space, explained township supervisor Barbara D’Angelo, Trust president. “People own property and we hold the easements on parkland and on property that has trails on it. We are part of the township’s plan of

protecting open space. She said that the upcoming event is part of an ongoing relationship between the township and the fire company. “The township and the Trust and all the (township residents) are part of one community, said D’Angelo. “We are accustomed to working together. Chambers said that firefighters must be in top physical condition when answering calls, particularly those that come in the middle of the night. “If you are asleep and the pager goes off, your body is completely at rest and in a REM sleep position. You are not warmed up, he stated. “How do you prepare for that? Diet and exercise and smoking have an effect on your ability to do

the job. Chambers, who promotes physical fitness at the fire company, was one of six volunteers from the Glen Moore Fire Company who participated in the recent 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb held at a stadium in Lancaster. The GMFC volunteers were joined by a volunteer from Honey Brook Fire Company as well. The event is held annually to honor and remember the New York firefighters who lost their lives on 9/11. D’Angelo encourages firefighters and nonfirefighters alike to take part in the upcoming run/walk. “Here is an opportunity to fundraise for the Trust, to do more physical activity and to enjoy the township park, she added.

Welsh from pg 1 Sheriff Carolyn Bunny Welsh was included in the Softie Cops 2019 calendar, an initiative of the National Law Enforcement Center on Animal Abuse (NLECAA) and the National Coalition on Violence Against Animals (NCOVAA). Welsh, a lifelong animal advocate, serves as national co-chair of NCOVAA. She is also on the advisory board of NLECAA. The shared mission of both organizations is to

provide resources aimed at preventing animal cruelty. Welsh explained that the organizations work with sheriff ’s offices, police departments and all law enforcement agencies throughout the country. The agencies hope that the pairing of some of the nation’s top law enforcers with animals in need will encourage others to go above and beyond to protect animals. Welsh said the dogs and cats used in the calendar were all rescues, many of which were adopted as a result of the promotion.

Welsh was teamed with Dante, a dog whose vision was impaired by cataracts. They are featured on the March page of the calendar. For more information on the calendars, readers may visit www.sheriffs.org/ showyoursoftside. Pictured on front:

“Cats” from pg 1 By Francine Fulton

SALT Performing Arts, a nonprofit theater group, will present the Tony Award-winning musical “Cats,” featuring music by Andrew Lloyd Webber, at its theater in the West Pikeland Township Building, 1645 Art School Road, Chester Springs. Performances dates and times include the following: Fridays, Oct. 19 and 26 and Nov. 2, from 7 to 9 p.m.; Saturdays, Oct. 20 and 27 and Nov. 3, from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m.; and Sundays, Oct. 21 and 28 and Nov. 4, from 2 to 4 p.m.

Based on T. S. Eliot’s 1939 anthology “Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats,” “Cats” is one of the longest-running shows in Broadway history. Set in a junkyard playground, the musical is about the Jellicle Cats, all with their own distinct personalities, who come out to play on one special night of the year - the night of the Jellicle Ball. The cats include the Rum Tum Tugger, Mr. Mistoffelees, Macavity, Jennyanydots, Skimbleshanks and Grizabella, among others. One by one they tell their stories to Old Deuteronomy, their leader, who must choose one of the cats to ascend to the Heaviside Layer and be reborn into a whole new life.

Judy Elliott, SALT marketing director, said that audiences will enjoy the set, the choreography and the music, which includes the popular song “Memory.” The costumes and makeup are also elaborate. “My daughter, Hannah, who is in the ensemble, and her friend Celia asked if they could do the makeup, and Lauren (McComas, producer) said yes. They researched and drew pictures of the makeup for each cat,” Elliott explained. “It’s a lot of work and a lot of makeup. The cast wears body suits, and the wigs and tails are made of yarn.” She said that the cast members had to learn to be “cat-like” in their movements during musical

numbers, as well as when they are not actively involved in the dialogue. “Everyone has to act like cats and twirl their tails,” she said. “(The play is) very dance-oriented. We have gymnasts and dancers and people who can sing really well.” Elliott noted that a sneak preview of “Cats” was offered by several cast members during the Eagleview Fall Fest held on Oct. 8 in the Eagleview Town Center. In addition to the director, Renee Chambers-Liciaga, who has Broadway experience, the crew includes: Lauren McComas (producer), Elizabeth Tozer (stage manager), Brooke Spinelli (costumes), Hannah Elliott and Celia Hernandez (makeup), Chelsea Barnett (assistant stage manager), Rob Merow (tech director/set designer) and Mike Toolan (music director).

The cast includes: Chelsea Barnett (Alonza), Troy Cooper (Asparagus), Sara Helmers (Bombalurina), Andrew Blank (Bustopher), Rachel Smith (Demeter), Hannah Elliott (Electra), Emily Merow (Grizabella), Courtney Harris(Griddlebone), Schyler Marsh (Growltiger), Melody Stanert (Jellylorum), Brianna Marsh (Jemima/Sillabub), Evan Sykes (Macavity), Andrew Patterson (Mr. Mistoffelees), Julia Kennedy (Mungojerrie), Hudson Marsh (Munkustrap), Josh Calderon (Old Deuteronomy), Drew Kalkiewicz (Plato), Lauren Kennedy (Rumpleteazer), Brooke Spinelli (Tantomile), Stephen Fisher (The Rum Tum Tugger), Keyaira Tozer (Tumblebrutus), Heather Kalkiewicz (Jennyanydots), Sophie Rowland (Skimbleshanks) and Leyla Marusa (Victoria).
