Members of the Mission Quilters at Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd in Coatesville are seeking some extra hands to help with their efforts. Volunteers are needed to help “tie” the quilt layers together during meetings of the group, which are held on the second and fourth Thursdays of each month from 1 to 3 p.m. “If you can tie a knot, you can do this,” said Jean Broderick of Elverson, one of the group leaders. As part of the process, a needle and thread are used to pierce the three quilt layers, which include the top and the back with the batting in between. Similar to sewing on a button, the needle and thread go through each square of the material several times and the thread is eventually tied off. “ We could really use a lot more (help),” said Broderick, who noted that
the group has been meeting for more than 10 years. The completed quilts, which measure 60 by 80 inches and are composed of 11-inch squares, are donated to Lutheran World Relief (LWR) as part of its Mission Quilt program. According to www.lwr.org/quilts, Mission Quilts are used by residents of impoverished countries for bedding, as simple tents or floor coverings or to carry infants. “We send (the quilts) to a warehouse in Maryland, and Lutheran World Relief sends the quilts to wherever they are needed,” Broderick said. “Most of ours have gone to India. “We have a number on the box when we ship them, so we can track it that way,” she added. In 2017, the group donated 24 quilts to LWR, and so far for 2018, the members sent 33. “ We have seven in progress right now,” Broderick said. See Quilting Group pg 11

Club Members Attend Owl-Banding Event And More Twin Valleys Garden Club members have attended numerous activities recently, including an owl-banding event, an Ikebana exhibit, and tours. Several members of Twin Valleys Garden Club (TVGC), located in northern Chester County, recently observed owl banding at Rushton Nature Preserve in Willistown Township. The monitoring of northern saw-whet owls (NSWO) is a nocturnal activity whereby members of this small owl species are caught using a system of loudspeakers playing the birds’ calls. The owls are briefly detained in the mist nets surrounding the loudspeakers. The information collected from this process gives scientists information about the cyclical nature of the migratory cycles of this species and their reproductive success. After information is collected, the owls are released. TVGC members also recently traveled to Montgomeryville to attend an exhibit and demonstration of the Sogetsu school of Ikebana. Certified teachers created dramatic floral designs as they spoke of the thought processes and feelings essential to any Ikebana arrangement. Unlike Western flower shows, Ikebana designs are not judged. Earlier in the fall, TVGC took a day trip to the University of Delaware (UD). The trip included a talk by Dr. Susan Barton, plant and soil sciences faculty member and Extension specialist. The talk, titled “Today’s Woman in the Landscape,” focused on sustainable landscapes. Barton described sustainable landscapes installed on the UD campus and other places in Delaware. Afterward, from local Master Gardeners led TVGC members on a guided visit to UD demonstration gardens surrounding the building. Garden club members then toured the campus gardens and landscape designed by Marian Coffin, an American landscape architect who designed various notable East Coast gardens. Her

OIC Tutoring Program Seeks Volunteers rs Online Training Available By Francine Fulton
The Chester County Opportunities Industrialization Center (OIC) is currently seeking volunteers willing to help individuals from other countries with their English language skills through its adult tutoring program. No experience is necessary, but volunteers must have a minimum of a bachelor’s degree. According to Debbie Rikess, who is the new adult tutoring program coordinator, there is a current waiting list of 22 people located throughout Chester County who are in need of volunteer
she said. Tutors are asked to meet with a student for a minimum of three hours a week for at least one year. “We ask them to meet at public locations, Rikess explained. “We have a lot of people from Exton, West Chester, Downingtown and Coatesville that like to meet at the Chester County Library in Exton. “It’s a great location for people to meet. She said that most student/tutor pairs meet twice a week for an hour and a half each time. In the past, tutors were required to attend a training workshop held at the library in Exton. Now, the program offers online training for tutors. “We recently switched to online training

Appearing Police Vehicle, Best Appearing Float and Best Appearing Group. The all-volunteer parade committee raises funds year-round by gathering donations and holding fundraisers. “We have a golf outing every year, and we have bowling or a dance at one of the fire houses,” said Scibek. “Sometimes we do dinners out when certain restaurants will give us 10 or 15 percent of (food sales). “ She said that planning also takes place throughout the year, and the committee is always trying to come up with new ideas and ways to make the parade enjoyable for all. “ We take a break (in January) after the parade, and then we discuss what worked and what didn’t and what we would tweak,” said Scibek. “(After that), we meet once a month to plan it and to raise money.” In the event of inclement weather in the forecast, a decision will be made on Thursday, Nov. 29, about the status of the parade. Cancellations will be listed at www.coatesvillechristmasparade.com and on the Coatesville Christmas Parade Inc. Facebook page. “The string bands and some of the (musicians who play) wind instruments can’t play in the rain or the snow,” Scibek explained. “Last year it snowed on us a little bit, but we pulled it off.” Scibek said that all the planning and fundraising needed to produce the annual parade on the first Saturday in December is well worth the effort. “It’s so nice to make people happy for a day,” she added. “It puts a smile on your face to be able to make (others) happy.” For more information about the parade, readers may call 610384-2677 or search for “Coatesville Christmas Parade, Inc.” on Facebook.

Coatesville Parade from pg 1 community groups, customized automobiles and farm tractors, along with representatives from local police departments and fire companies. “There will be lots of fire engines and antique cars with local dignitaries,” noted Marianne Scibek, a member of the parade committee. Costumed characters will be another special feature in the parade. “We will have a Transformers cartoon character that is brand new. The kids will really like that,” Scibek said. “The characters will give out candy and interact with the kids.” Other featured characters will include Optimus Prime, Bumblebee, Dalmatian and Scooby Doo. She said representatives from the string bands, which will perform in the annual Mummers Parade in Philadelphia on Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2019, are also a popular attraction because of their unique blend of music and colorful costumes. “Not everyone who appears on New Year’s Day (plays in Coatesville), but they send a good number of players,” Scibek noted. Special honorees will include members of the Coatesville Sports Hall of Fame and local veterans. The grand marshals will be representatives from the Scott Field Project group, an organization that is working to revitalize Coatesville’s Scott Field Stadium. Also on hand will be the Coatesville Area Senior High School Meistersingers, the Philadelphia Eagles Pep Band and Chris Scott, the “Top Chef” contestant from Coatesville. At the end of the parade, Santa Claus will make a special appearance on a Coatesville Fire Department truck to officially usher in the holiday season. Bauer noted that the first dog rescued by the organization was in December of 2017, when a stray dog was found roaming the streets of Elverson. The dog, Sir Winston, was eventually adopted by the Bauers. “He now lives in front of our fireplace,” Bauer said with a smile. That adoption spurred the founding of the animal rescue. Some dogs and cats come to the organization from families that cannot keep their pets, while others are rescued from dire situations. “A quarter of our animals are owner surrenders,” Bauer noted. “We get puppy mill (dogs), and we also pull from animal control.” Every effort is made to find the owners of stray dogs. “If there is a lost dog, we put them on hold and scan them for a chip,” explained Bauer. “If it doesn’t work out and the owners are not found, we will go ahead

We want (the dogs and cats) to learn things so it’s easier for them to become adopted.” One of the organization’s success stories is Rose, at dog that was found as a stray after being hit by a car and turned over to Lucky Dawg Animal Rescue. Tips To Simplify Holiday Cooking for a crowd this holiday season. These four tips will help hosts to tackle feeding a crowd. Hosts may agonize over their holiday menus, and some may feel compelled to prepare a family specialty or the same dishes their parents or grandparents prepared for holiday dinners when they were children. But holiday hosts can make things easier on themselves by choosing dishes they have made in the past, regardless of their place in family history. Chances are the ingredients for hosts’ own specialties are already
Families big and small typically celebrate the holiday season together. For some, celebrating the holidays with family requires traveling, while others stay put and welcome family and friends into their homes. At some point during the holiday season, celebrants who host family and friends will no doubt prepare a home-cooked meal for their loved ones. Cooking for a crowd can seem like a daunting task, especially for first-time hosts. However, there are various ways for hosts to simplify cooking

in the pantry, saving a potentially time-consuming trip to the grocery store. And thanks to the familiarity factor, hosts’ own specialties likely will not require as much time to prepare. Another way to simplify cooking for a crowd is to invite guests to bring along a side dish or dessert. Guests who live nearby can make something in advance of the big meal, while hosts can hand over their kitchens to overnight guests who express a willingness to contribute their own home-cooked dish to the party. Sharing the cooking duties gives hosts more time to connect with friends and family and serves as a great way to plan the
several months, which included the amputation of a leg, but Rose blossomed in her foster family’s care and they recently adopted her. Bauer said that the rescue is entirely dependent on its volunteers and foster families. “I have an amazing group of volunteers. My husband, Mark, trains dogs, so he works with the dogs that come in,” said Bauer. “We feel really lucky. We are blessed to do it.” For more information about the rescue, including how to foster, volunteer or adopt, readers may email LuckyDawgAR@ gmail.com. More information is also available at the Facebook page and at www.luckydawg rescue.com. menu in advance. Hosts also should not feel pressured to cook more food than is necessary. Holiday meals have a tendency to be lavish, but hosts do not have to spend all day in the kitchen preparing food that will likely end up as leftovers or trash. Hosts should get a final headcount in the days before everyone comes over and adjust their recipes accordingly. If the big meal is on Christmas Day, that does not mean hosts have to start cooking while everyone unwraps their presents. Hosts who are uncertain about what to cook can look for meals that can be prepared in advance so, come the big day, all they need to do is turn on the oven and let the meal cook while the family spends time together.

which is my home church. “One of the popular acts coming back this year is the AME Church choir,” Norris continued. “They are amazingly good and have lots of energy. One year the AME Church brought saxophones and bongos and all kinds of cool (instruments).” Norris said the goal of the concert is to raise $10,000 for the food cupboard, which is run by director Judy Dougherty. “This concert is part of a capital campaign,” Norris said. “That’s (the amount) that Judy needs to keep her operational - to pay rent and utilities. There is a high demand for food for our area. It is a high-need time, especially this time of year.” Norris noted that the auditorium holds just under 1,000 people and that he would love to see those seats filled on the afternoon of the concert. “It’s a way to kick off the holiday season,” he said. “Most of the choirs do faith-based Christmas songs. It’s a very nice concert; it’s always enjoyable.” The volunteer-run Octorara Area Food Cupboard, located at 714 W. Main St. in Parkesburg, serves the OASD region, including Atglen, Christiana, Cochranville, Compass, Parkesburg, Pomeroy, Sadsbury and Wagontown. She will introduce the choirs and make announcements about their upcoming activities or concerts. The concert coordinator will be Bill Johnson, a retired OASD music instructor. “I’ll be directing the first and last numbers,” he explained. “We will have close to 150 voices.” To prepare for the combined musical numbers, the choirs will rehearse on their own prior to the concert and then hold a combined rehearsal that afternoon. “They practice in school or at church, and that way they learn the combined songs ahead of time,” explained Johnson. “When they come together at 1:30 p.m. that afternoon, that gives me a chance to stage them, and we run through the two songs.” A choir that is performing at the event for the first time this year will be the Kennett Community Choir. “It is neat to see a chorus from another school district,” said Norris. “Penningtonville is also new this year,

the horses will be clearly labeled with the horse’s name and photo and a biography, including how he or she came to the farm. In addition to horses, the farm is also home to Albert the donkey. Albert came to Ryerss Farm from the Large Animal Protection Society (LAPS), which needed a place for him to stay. Albert has bonded closely with a horse named Max, a Tennessee walker, and the two of them can always be found together in the fields. The site’s newest resident is Jalou, a Trakehner that was born in Germany. According to his biography, Jalou competed in dressage after being imported to the United States. Later in his life, Jalou worked as a dressage schoolmaster. “He schooled the riders,” explained Temoyan. “A schoolmaster has learned the steps so well that if there is a rider on him that gives him an incorrect command, he won’t do it.” Jalou retired to Ryerss Farm on Aug. 23 at the age of 28. Like the other horses that live at the farm, he will never be ridden or worked again. Ryerss Farm, founded in 1888, provides care for aged,
abused or injured horses at its 383-acre facility. Some of the equine residents are brought to Ryerss Farm by their former owners, who want their horses to live out their retirement years at the farm. Other residents are rescued horses, brought to Ryerss Farm by the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) or LAPS for a temporary or permanent home. All of the retired horses’ needs are met, including veterinary and dental care. Ryerss Farm is open every day from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. for visitors. Servant Stage Sets “A Christmas Carol” Servant Stage Company will present Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol” across Lancaster County, with nearly 40 performances set at local theaters, churches, retirement homes, and schools. The show’s music is directed by Johnathan Bauer and underscored by pairings of harp, cello, guitar, and penny whistle, played live at select performances by Emily Aziza and Tony Marini. First produced by Servant Stage in 2015, this original adaptation is unique in that every word is taken from Dickens’ text, bringing the holiday classic to life through the collaborative storytelling of eight performers, all playing multiple roles. Dickens’ text will be interspersed with portions of musical narration set
to the tunes of classic Christmas carols with original lyrics by Jon Rider, also playing the part of Scrooge. All performances are offered as pay-what-you-will in keeping with Servant Stage’s mission to make performances accessible to everyone in the community. The show will tour across Lancaster County through Sunday, Dec. 23, including performances at Lancaster Alliance Church, 210 Pitney Road, Lancaster, on Sunday, Dec. 2, and at the Ware Center, 42 N. The event honored Phoenixville Area School District superintendent Dr. Alan Fegley with the John Crane Child Victims’ Advocacy Award and Chester County detective James Ciliberto with the inaugural Peggy Gusz Victims’ Advocacy Legacy Award. The John Crane Child Victims’ Advocacy Award is presented annually by the CVC board of directors to a person in Chester County who is not in the field of victim advocacy but supports child victims and their needs through work in related fields.
Fegley was nominated by CVC community outreach supervisor Joe Myers to commend the work being accomplished through the Phoenixville HUB, a school district-based organization that brings together school professionals and outside providers to create a coordinated system of care for the students and families in the district. The Peggy Gusz Award was newly created this year to recognize Margaret “Peggy” Gusz’s longtime victim advocacy efforts since the agency was formed in 1973. Through her efforts, she helped give a voice to victims when their needs went unmet and helped change the attitudes of law enforcement professionals, medical professionals and

Downingtown East Theatre will present “A Christmas Carol,” an adaptation of the holiday classic, in the Downingtown High School East (DHSE) auditorium, 50 Devon Drive, Exton, on Friday, Nov. 30, and Saturday, Dec. 1, at 7 p.m. There will also be 1 p.m. matinees on Dec. 1 and Sunday, Dec. 2. The play was adapted for the stage by Patrick Barlow, who also wrote a four-person stage adaptation of Alfred Hitchcock’s “The 39 Steps.” For “A Christmas Carol,” Barlow wrote the production to include only five actors playing multiple roles, with simple props and staging. The play is based on the familiar tale by Charles Dickens about a miser named Ebenezer Scrooge, who transforms into a man who embraces the Christmas spirit after being visited by three seasonal spirits. At DHSE, 10 actors were cast for the play, which features minimal staging. “We’ve actually adapted this version to (use) a cast of 10 actors to give more students an opportunity to perform; the students were so talented at auditions that they really did earn their way into the cast,” said DHSE English and theater instructor Zach Brown, show producer. “There is just one set and several set pieces that come on and off stage. The students themselves create many of the stage pieces from a door to a carriage to a lockbox.” He noted that the fall production is being staged a little later this year. “The play is a touch later this year so that we could fully get past Thanksgiving and enjoy the play in the Christmas season,” said Brown. “The director, John McGraw, has always wanted to stage a version of ‘A Christmas Carol,’ and this year seemed like as good a time as any. Plus, he found this new adaptation that allowed for more creativity with the actors and gives a little more humor to the script, yet it still maintains the touching sentimentality of the original Dickens story. “While I wouldn’t call it a musical, there are a variety of Christmas carols sung throughout the show by the cast, all of whom have choral training,” Brown added. He said that the DHSE students
were familiar with the story, which was also made into different versions for film and television. “It is nice to see that students still know ‘A Christmas Carol.’ They’ve all seen some version of the movie, be it the George C. Scott version or the Patrick Stewart version or something for kids like Mickey Mouse or Muppets,” Brown stated. “The story really is timeless and always enjoyable, which is another reason why this show is still great to perform.” Liam DiCicco, who plays Scrooge, said that he has been learning to identify with his character. “The most challenging part of my role (was) discovering who Scrooge really was and his motivations, then putting those driving forces into a physical portrayal,” he stated. “Everyone knows that Scrooge is the miser of old London, and to them that may be all his character is, but his attitude toward life is a direct result of the trauma, neglect and pain that he has felt throughout his life. Bringing that to life in a way that does the character justice, not only with my voice, but also with my movements and gestures, has truly been a challenge.” Liam was previously seen as T.J. in DHSE’s production of “Sister Act” and as Bert in “Mary Poppins.” “I love portraying Scrooge,” he said. “It is honestly one of the most entertaining characters to perform as, in my opinion, and it’s a pretty big departure from the characters I usually play.” In addition to Liam, cast members include R. Joe Breslin, Graham Firth, Stephanie Gerow, Humna Khawaja, Nicole Lawrie, Kyle MacLaughlin, Jackson McGovern, Alli O’Grady and Alison Waller. For more information or tickets to the DHSE production, readers may visit www.downing towneasttheatre.com. Tickets will also be sold at the door. Students and senior citizens will receive a discount. More information is available on Facebook by searching for “Downingtown East Theatre.” Pictured on front: Starring in Downingtown High School East’s upcoming performances of “A Christmas Carol” from Nov. 30 through Dec. 2 are Liam DiCicco (left) as Ebenezer Scrooge and R. Christmas at Joanna, a threenight celebration of a 19th-century Victorian Christmas, will be offered at Historic Joanna Furnace Iron Works, 1250 Furnace Road, Geigertown, on Friday, Nov. 30, from 5 to 9 p.m. and on Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 1 and 2, from 4 to 9 p.m. Those who visit the site will be guided by thousands of luminarias, which will light the walkways throughout the furnace complex. Two bonfires will be lit throughout the three days, where visitors can enjoy caroling, storytelling by Kris Kringle and musical performances. Performers will include groups from Alleghenyville Church, the High Point Baptist Chapel and the Twin Valley Bible Academy. Also scheduled to provide music are the Lukens Steel Band and the Morgantown Community Church Men’s Chorale. Christmas at Joanna, presented annually by the Hay Creek Valley Historical Association (HCVHA), will also include a Christmas Craft Market that will feature more than 30 vendors offering items such as homemade wreaths, alpaca hats and scarves,
candles, soaps, jewelry, wrought iron pieces and holiday décor. Most vendors will be located in the outdoor market; others will be stationed inside a heated tent. While walking through the complex, visitors may chat with the costumed interpreters depicting village residents and meet some of the village workers such as the storekeeper, the blacksmith and the molders in the casting house. The tours and building visits are free with admission. Homemade food available throughout the three days will include sausage sandwiches, hot dogs, soups, chili and french fries, along with pork, sauerkraut and mashed potatoes. Warm beverages offered for sale will include hot chocolate, hot mulled cider and coffee. A highlight of the event will be activities in the mule stable. There, visitors can meet re-enactors portraying ironmaster L. Heber Smith and his bride, Ella Jane Grubb Smith, who moved into the mansion after their wedding in 1868. In June, Joanna Furnace hosted a re-enactment of the couple’s wedding, portrayed by actors from the Genesius Theatre in Reading.

HopewellRoadPharmacy.com The Mission Quilters, who meet on the second and fourth Thursdays of each month from 1 to 3 p.m. at Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd in Coatesville, create quilts that are distributed to those in need by Lutheran World Relief.
“It won’t be the same actor and actress (portraying the couple), but some of the actors from Genesius will come out and stroll the grounds,” said Mark Zerr, HCVHA executive director. “Our re-enactors will talk about the wedding and holiday customs. The theme will be the couple celebrating their first Christmas together.” There will also be period dances and Victorian parlor games. A traditional large cedar Christmas tree will be on display - just like the one that would have been in the Smith family mansion a century and a half ago. An antique train display will operate in the mechanical technology building, and wagon rides will be offered for a small fee. Face painting will also take place in the heated tent, and, on Dec. 1 only, families can get their picture taken in the Christmas photo booth. Zerr noted that a host of HCVHA volunteers, as well as community groups, make the Christmas at Joanna event possible. For example, members of Boy Scout Troop 543 from Plowville are responsible for preparing, setting up and lighting the thousands of luminarias.
Walkways at the Joanna Furnace Iron Works complex will be lit with luminarias and the historic buildings will be illuminated with soft spotlights during the Christmas at Joanna event taking place Nov. 30 through Dec. 2.
“Boy Scout Troop 341 from Alleghenyville will stand the Christmas trees and decorate them,” Zerr added. “Boy Scout Troop 315 from Exeter will hang green roping and wreaths on all the buildings.” Joanna Furnace is located 3 miles north of Morgantown off Route 10. Visitors should access the site via Furnace Road. An admission fee will be charged. Children age 12 and under will be admitted for free. All proceeds will benefit the HCVHA and its work in restoring and maintaining the Joanna Furnace complex. For additional information, readers may visit www.haycreek.org, find the HCVHA on Facebook or call 610-286-0388.

In a recent ceremony at the governor’s residence, Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) Deputy Secretary for Driver and Vehicle Services Kurt Myers joined other Pennsylvania school bus safety advocates to honor nine students for communicating important school bus safety messages and six school bus drivers for their superior driving skills. The students, in kindergarten through eighth grade, were recognized for their winning entries in the 2018 School Bus Safety Poster Contest. They were chosen from 352 public and private school student entries. Firstplace entries earned the honor of being forwarded to a national competition. The theme for this year’s contest - “My School Bus, The Safest Form of Student Transportation!” - reflects the commitment school bus drivers show daily to both parents and students. Among the local honorees were Alivia Spitz, Reiffton
School, Reading, first place for third- through fifth-graders; Sally Nguyen, Reiffton School, Reading, second place for thirdthrough fifth-graders; Desteny Keiser, Upper Dauphin Area Middle School, Lykens, second place for sixth- through eighthgraders; and Emalie Brown, Upper Dauphin Area Middle School, Lykens, third place for sixth- through eighth-graders. The school bus drivers received certificates and governor’s citations for winning the 2018 Pennsylvania School Bus Driver Safety Competition, which was held in June and tested the drivers’ knowledge of safety rules and safe operation of buses. Honorees included Shanon O’Brien, Chester County, Krapf Bus Companies, first place in the Conventional Bus category; Michael Webster, Lebanon County, Brightbill Transportation, first place in the Transit-Style Bus category; and Ruth Del Vecchio, Chester County, Krapf Bus Companies, second place in the Transit-Style Bus category.
