St. Mary’s Shelter To Add Transitional Housing Unit By Francine Fulton

Since 1987, St. Mary’s Franciscan Shelter for Homeless Families in Phoenixville has provided a safe and temporary home for people in need from throughout Chester County. Now, the shelter will soon provide transitional housing for families by converting four former classrooms into twobedroom apartments. The classrooms were part of St. Mary’s School, a small Catholic elementary school that was run by the Sisters of St. Francis based in Aston. “At one time (the building that houses the homeless shelter) was the convent where the sisters lived and the school buildings were attached,” explained Sister Bernadette Dougherty, SSJ, executive director of St. Mary’s Shelter. “The school closed when the shelter moved in.” After St. Mary’s School closed, it was See St. Mary’s pg 3

Ten years ago, Svaroopa Vidya Ashram (SVA) opened its doors in Downingtown. The founder, Swami Nirmalananda, had already been teaching yoga and meditation worldwide for 30 years. She settled her teacher training programs in Pennsylvania in 2007, then established the Ashram as a residential center in 2009. All the practices come from Swami Nirmalananda’s

Local Resident Launches “Gospel Spice” Podcast By Francine Fulton

Traditionally, those who would like to learn more about their faith would speak with their pastor, read related books or take part in a Bible study. Now, there is an additional way for people to get a new perspective about the Scriptures. Chester County resident Stephanie Rousselle recently launched a new podcast called “Gospel Spice,” which strives to “spice up” people’s time with God. People may listen to the podcast at www.gospel-spice.com, or they may download the episodes and listen to them on their phones, tablets or laptops. “A podcast is like a radio show, (and) it’s free,” Rousselle explained. “It is something you download, and you can listen anytime you want on your computer, phone or tablet. It’s accessible 24/7. It is the ultimate tool (for communication). See Podcast pg 5

Joanna Furnace from pg 1

R050192

While Historic Joanna Furnace Iron Works is known for its popular events that bring history to life, the site is currently undergoing several restoration projects designed to preserve history as well. In 2019, the Hay Creek Valley Historical Association (HCVHA), the nonprofit organization that formed to maintain, restore and preserve the historic site, will invest approximately $300,000 in several projects, including preserving the blast furnace bosh, rebuilding the wheelwright shop and installing shutters in the office/store. In addition, a team of students from the Kutztown University Department of Anthropology and Sociology is working on an archaeological study in the cellar of the office/store before a brick floor will be installed. Phase One of the Joanna Furnace bosh preservation has been completed. The bosh is the firebrick interior lining of the blast furnace, where temperatures once exceeded 3,000 degrees when the furnace was in operation. The project was underwritten by a

Pennsylvania Historic and Museum Commission (PHMC) Keystone Historic Preservation Grant, a grant from the Berks County Community Foundation and a grant from the Louis J. Appell Jr., Preservation Fund, along with support from the HCVHA members and supporters. The work was completed by the International Chimney Corporation of Buffalo, N.Y., known for successfully relocating the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse. Restoration of the wheelwright shop recently began after nearly 15 years of research by archaeology volunteers. According to HCVHA executive director Mark Zerr, the building stood until the late 1940s. “It was the wheelwright’s responsibility to keep the company’s wagons on the road,” Zerr explained. “His job was to construct wheels, spokes, hubs and even the wagons that would haul the charcoal, iron ore and limestone to the site and ultimately transport the finished iron products to market.” The HCVHA hopes to make the building appear as it did when it was in operation. “We have only one partial photo, and that shows the southern side of the building,” said Zerr. “We used that as part of our research, which helps us to define how the building was constructed.” Because only one partial photo of this building exists, the archaeology team provided uncovered artifacts over the years to help with the building’s reconstruction. In addition to learning the size of the foundation, which measured

about 17 by 24 feet, they found broken glass, which indicated window placement, as well as door size and roof material. The photo also allowed the restoration team to learn the exact dimensions of the building as well as the pitch of the roof. The wheelwright shop reconstruction is expected to cost approximately $115,000. Funding came from an anonymous donor family that will underwrite the major portion of the restoration project. The donation was meant to honor the donor’s father, grandfather and greatgrandfather, who were all wheelwrights. The Kutztown archaeology students are currently working in the basement of the office/store. After digging through gravel, they discovered a concrete floor. “Someone lived in our office/store at one time as their home, and I suspect this was when the concrete got poured,” said Zerr. “We hope that we can continue our relationship with (the students) and have them come and (study) other areas of our properties at some point.” The efforts coincide with the historic site’s desire to become a National Historic Landmark. “Every project we undertake within the historic area (is required to) follow the rigorous National Historical Standards as defined by the Federal Historic Preservation Guidelines,” stated Ron Schlegel, HCVHA president. Joanna Furnace is located at 1250 Furnace Road, Geigertown. For more information, readers may call 610-286-0388, visit www.haycreek.org or search for “Hay Creek Valley Historical Association” on Facebook. St. Mary’s from pg 1 briefly rented to another school and religious education classes were also held there. “(However), it was never established as a real school again,” Sister Bernadette said. “When I arrived five years ago, it was all empty buildings.” The far school building, which contained four classrooms and a gym, was demolished. “(The property) has been made into a beautiful garden,” Sister Bernadette said. “The building that remains,

what we call the old school, has four classrooms that will be made into four apartments.” Each apartment will contain a living area, a dining room, the bedrooms, a bathroom and a kitchen. “(Residents) will be able to come in (a separate entrance). They will have their own (key) fobs, so no one else would be able to go into their space,” Sister Bernadette said. “They will pay a program fee in order to cover the expenses of them living there and their case manager. It’s a program cost, not rent.”

The building will be handicapped-accessible, offer security and have a storage area near the entrance. “They won’t have to take their strollers or car seats up to their apartments,” Sister Bernadette said. St. Mary’s works in partnership with local organizations and churches that refer families to the emergency shelter. A family may stay in the shelter for up to eight weeks. All adults must undergo criminal background checks before moving in. While at the shelter, residents

are given a private room and may enjoy a communal living space. This includes a newly renovated kitchen and a children’s playroom. They are provided with on-site classes in parenting, household management and time management. They also receive help with employment, debt counseling, education, child care and future housing. “The people we serve are not necessarily from Phoenixville. The

families that are here now - two are from West Chester and one is from Coatesville,” Sister Bernadette said, noting that the shelter can house five families. “They share the dining room and the three bathrooms. They have their own room, and the rooms are very nice.” She said that the goal is for families at the shelter to make progress toward independent living. The addition of the transitional housing unit will further that goal.

October 30, 2019 - 3

Bids for the transitional housing project will open in January, and construction should take at least six months. The rooms will then have to be furnished and prepared for occupancy. “It should be open by spring of (2021),” Sister Bernadette stated. The Pennsylvania Library Association (PaLA) recently named the Chester County Library as the Library of the Year during the association’s annual conference in Erie. The designation comes on the heels of the library’s recognition as a PA Forward Gold Star Library in July. Each year, the PaLA recognizes members who have contributed significantly to the library profession and the betterment of libraries in Pennsylvania. The association’s newest award honors a library that exhibits excellence in serving its community, advancing staff development, and leadership. The Chester County Library is committed to serving its community, and every staff member participates in community outreach events outside of the library’s walls. This outreach is included in part of the library’s strategic planning through increasing the community’s awareness and recognition of the library’s services and efforts. Since 2017, the Chester County Library has also participated in the Office of Commonwealth Libraries’ Turning Outward Initiative. This program has been a three-year commitment of training, coaching, and mentoring in Community Engagement. Among the library’s accomplishments are its ever-evolving and diverse partnerships with community agencies, including the Financial Stability Center and the Chester County Opportunities Industrialization Center. The Chester County Library is committed to maintaining a professional, knowledgeable, and well-trained staff. Each year the library holds a Staff Development Day, working closely with Commonwealth Libraries to ensure the library staff members meet continuing education standards. Various in-house training programs are held to enhance staff skill levels and to keep them abreast of human resource topics. Staff members are encouraged to attend PaLA conferences, chapter conferences, support staff workshops, and other training made available by PaLA. The Chester County Library is an Institutional Member of PaLA, as are the Friends of the Chester County Library. Staff members of the Chester County Library provide not only leadership within their community, but also statewide, and have served on PaLA committees, are graduates of the PALS program, and

I’m not plagued by feeling lost anymore and feel so at home. It’s like home was just waiting for me.” Local yogi Shelley Zeichner appreciates the “aha” moments in Swami Nirmalananda’s talks. “When I go to Swami Sunday this week, I know it will happen again even though I think, ‘What could she possibly say that goes beyond what she said last week?’ I can’t wait to find out!” she said. Kusuma Sachs, a Svaroopa Yoga teacher/trainer, feels “grateful to be in the presence of such a remarkable teacher.” “I appreciate what she, as a guru, offers,” said Sachs. “She

When a guest speaker is featured, the podcast will be slightly longer. “‘Gospel Spice’ is for anyone who has experienced a level of staleness in their relationship with God or those who feel their relationship with God is boring or running dry and it’s not that exciting,” Rousselle said. “‘Gospel Spice’ is your new secret ingredient to spice up your relationship with God.” Rousselle, who has traveled extensively, has been a guest speaker at church and women’s events for the past 20 years. She also leads the women’s Bible study at Calvary Fellowship Church. She said that her knowledge of various cultures can add to the Christian experience, noting that her perspective is also unique because she grew up as an atheist. “I came to faith as a young adult (after) I came to the U.S. as a foreign exchange student (from France) at 16,” Rousselle noted. “I have spent the last two decades of my life on three continents, four countries and five cities. There will also be a sale of homemade baked goods and lunch items. “We are expanding our lunch options this year,” said event chairperson Kirstin Wentz McElroy. “Kelly’s in Thorndale is making wraps for us, as well as chicken noodle and tomato soups. We will still offer hot dogs and soft pretzels like we had last year. “ We will expand the bake table this year as well,” she added. Community members are invited to donate baked

goods for the sale. Items can be dropped off on Nov. 2 from 7 to 9 a.m. in the main lobby. Eat-in and takeout options will be available for food items and snacks. “ We will have tables set up, sort of like a café,” said Wentz McElroy. Additionally, a random drawing will take place. Wentz McElroy explained that each of the 80 vendors has been asked to donate an item for the drawing. Visitors will be able to purchase tickets to enter the drawing, and they do not need to be present to win. “Starting at around 1:30 p.m., we will draw names,” Wentz McElroy pointed out. “New this year is that people can check the craft show web page and Facebook page to see if they won an item.” Food, the baked goods sale and prize items will be located in the school lobby. The sale of crafts will take place in the school gymnasium. Among the items offered for sale will be jewelry, soaps, pet products,

wooden items, pottery, embroidery, artwork and photography, hand-sewn products, headbands and scarves and toys. Home-based business vendors that will be represented include Arbonne, Avon, LuLaRoe, Mary Kay and others. “ We had an overwhelming response (from crafters), and we have a waiting list. A lot of crafters are returning, but we will have new ones, too,” Wentz McElroy said, noting that the craft show is timed to coincide with the holiday shopping season. The craft and vendor show is open to the public, and admission is free. All proceeds will benefit PJP II, which serves students in prekindergarten through eighth grade. Sheriff’s Office Welcomes New Deputy The Chester County Sheriff’s Office welcomed a new deputy sheriff recently. Chester County Sheriff Carolyn Bunny Welsh administered the oath to Deputy Sheriff Darren L. Smith on Sept. 30. Smith was accompanied by his mother and sister, who had traveled two hours from northern New Jersey to attend. A native of Bergen County in New Jersey, Smith said the occasion marked the successful completion of a quest that began about three years ago. Smith graduated from Paramus High School in New Jersey and went on to earn a degree in communications from Ramapo College of New Jersey. He said he held a diverse array of jobs, but the one that brought him the most fulfillment was serving as a police reserve officer in his hometown. Smith moved to Chester County in 2016. By then, he was committed to pursuing a full-time career in law enforcement and enrolled in Delaware County’s Police Academy. At the academy, he became friends with two women who shared his passion for police work. The two happened to work

A National Juvenile Justice Week forum was recently organized by the League of Women Voters of Chester County (LWVCC). Participants included state Sen. Andy Dinniman, state Rep. Dan Williams, local and state police, and juvenile justice officials. The forum, held at Westminster Presbyterian Church in West Chester, included discussions on holding youths accountable for their actions, engaging them in activities to restore victims and communities, and ensuring sufficient opportunities to move them toward productive citizenship and away from further criminal activity. Dinniman, who serves as minority chair of the Senate Education Committee, presented an official Senate resolution recognizing Juvenile Justice Week and discussed the importance of recognizing the impact of trauma on children and young people. In attendance were police and law enforcement officers from var-

ious departments, including the City of Coatesville Police Department, the South Coatesville Police Department, and the Caln Township Police Department, as well as troopers from the Pennsylvania State Police. At the event, Dinniman and Williams recognized four individuals with special Senate citations for their contributions to the juvenile justice community. The honorees include Cpl. Jason Culbertson of the Caln Township Police Department, who works as a youth mentor in the Coatesville Area School District, and Officer Justin Fonock of the South Coatesville Police Department, who assisted a mother and her two children after they were struck by a motorist. Dinniman and Williams also honored Cpl. Reginald Easterling Jr., a patrol unit supervisor with the Pennsylvania State Police. Easterling, who has spent many hours mentoring at-risk youths, served previously as the Chester
