Ludwigs Corner Fire Company Seeks Volunteers By Francine Fulton
Those looking for a way to serve the community are invited to consider one of the most vital volunteer opportunities available - volunteering at a local fire company. Currently, Ludwigs Corner Fire Company (LCFC) Station 73 is seeking to fill volunteer openings, with opportunities available for active firefighters, drivers and other personnel needed at a scene of an emergency. Also needed are those willing to help with fundraising and administrative duties. “We can never have enough volunteers,” said Ross Trego, assistant chief. Youths are invited to take part in the fire company’s junior firefighter program. “You can start here at 14. Fourteen- and 15-year-olds can participate in training and come to company meetings and fire company events,” See Fire Company pg 3
Ludwigs Corner Fire Company volunteers invite area residents to consider serving the community as volunteer firefighters and in other support roles. Current volunteers include (from left) Bob Spangler, assistant engineer/fire police; Allen Cleaver, past chief/firefighter; Scott Markley, firefighter; Ross Trego, assistant chief; and Dick Hahn, deputy chief/fire police captain.
Ludwigs Corner Fire Company (LCFC) will present a Beef and Beer fundraiser on Saturday, Nov. 16, from 6:30 to 10:30 p.m. in LCFC’s Griffith Hall, 1325 Pottstown Pike (Route 100), Glenmoore. The event, open to those age 21 and over, will include food, beverages, music and an opportunity to win prizes. Ticket holders will be able to enjoy food prepared by Montesano Bros. of Chester Springs. The all-you-can-eat menu, which will be served buffet-style, will include roast beef sandwiches, ziti, salad, beverages and desserts. Snacks will also be available throughout the evening. Those who attend the event will also have an opportunity to win gift baskets through a random drawing. Among the See LCFC Fundraiser pg 6

Community Invited To Support STEPS Group’s Holiday Food Drive
Members of the STEPS program invite the community to donate food items as part of their annual holiday food drive. Collection bins are located at sites throughout the community.
Will and Amy Shaw, regional area coordinators for Operation Christmas Child (OCC), held an outdoor shoebox packing party in the driveway of their Chester County home on Oct. 26. During the party, participants packed shoeboxes full of gifts that will be distributed to children in need worldwide through Samaritan’s Purse, the Christian relief organization that sponsors the OCC program. “We packed 230 shoeboxes and hope to pack 500 more in the next few weeks (at additional packing parties) in our garage,” noted Amy. “We personally See Shoeboxes pg 8

Fire Company from pg 1

Trego explained. “Then, once they turn 16, they can start going on fire calls. (Youths ages 16 to 18) cannot go into a burning building, but they can do exterior (jobs) like (helping) with ladders and hydrant operations.” Those interested in obtaining the Fire I certification must complete 180 hours of class at the Chester County Public Safety Training Campus in Coatesville. “It’s classroom and hands-on training,” explained Trego, who is also an instructor at the center. He noted that the fire company finances the cost of the training and the gear for prospective firefighters. LCFC has approximately 15 volunteer firefighters who are currently available for service. “We do 200 to 300 fire calls a year. If we have a house fire, other companies will come to assist,” Trego noted. “Right now, in all the fire trucks we have 27 seats if we fill every one.” He said because of the time commitment, getting volunteers has been a challenge. However, he finds the experience rewarding. “I (volunteer) to help keep the community safe,” Trego said. Volunteers take part in weekly training nights on Mondays from 7 to 9 p.m. “We review basic firefighting techniques - pulling hose lines, victim removal and vehicle rescue training,” Trego said. Those interested in volunteering are invited to visit the firehouse any Monday evening. They may also email fire chief Jeff Kimes at Chief73@ludwigscornerfire.com for more information. LCFC services portions of West Vincent, Upper Uwchlan and East Nantmeal townships. Local residents may recognize the fire company’s trucks for their distinctive yellow color rather than the traditional red and white. “Yellow is more visible,” noted Dick Hahn, deputy chief/fire police captain. “These trucks are visible whether it’s day or night and when it’s foggy.” According to www.ludwigscornerfire .com/history, the LCFC was the idea of John Harris, the first chief. Harris and the other original members, who were part of local Boy Scout Troop 89, decided to pursue the creation of a fire company when the Scout troop dissolved. They were able to obtain what was left of the Boy Scout troop’s treasury to help start what is now Station 73. The station, with a motto of “Neighbors Serving Neighbors,” was chartered in September of 1972. After several years of having the fire trucks and equipment located in local barns, the fire company received a donation from Clyde and Mary Griffith of three and a half acres of commercial property, where the firehouse now stands at 1325 Pottstown Pike, Glenmoore. Griffith Hall, which is attached to the firehouse, was named in honor of the family that made the new firehouse possible. “Clyde was a very generous person,” said Hahn, pointing out a portrait of the Griffiths and a photograph of Clyde during a fox hunt that are located in the hall’s entryway.

Food Drive from pg 1 the items that are most needed by the food bank are peanut butter, whole-grain pasta, rice, whole-grain cereal, canned tuna and chicken, canned vegetables and canned fruit. The community is invited to take part in the effort by donating nonperishable, nonexpired food items. Drop-off bins are located at the following sites: Main Line Rehabilitation, 668 Exton Commons, Exton; Rino’s Italian Restaurant, 327 Lancaster Ave., Exton; Stand Strong Training Center, 987 E. Lancaster Ave., Suite 200, Downingtown; Citadel Bank Downingtown, 1246 Cornerstone Blvd., Downingtown; the Chester County Cerebral Palsy Association, 749 Springdale Drive, Exton; Wellington Square Bookshop, 549 Wellington Square, Exton; and Philly Pretzel Factory, 901 Gap Newport Pike, Avondale. STEPS, which stands for Support, Teamwork, Experience, Purpose and Success, is a structured day program. Clients meet on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. at the Main Line rehab facility to focus on socialization, functional skills and other tasks. Discussion topics include daily living skills, planning and scheduling, household management, self-advocacy and independence skills. Andrea Kiotis, STEPS program coordinator, explained that the clients themselves lead participants through the meetings, which take place in a separate area at the facility that includes tables and a kitchenette. “It’s very interactive; it’s definitely not a class setting. I’m not the teacher who stands and talks,” shared Kiotis. “Everyone is very involved. Everyone is working on
something different depending on what they need to become more independent in certain areas.” For example, she said, attendees work on decision making and how to block out distractions in order to focus on the task at hand. “Communication is huge. A lot of (the clients) are working on conversation skills and learning to initiate a conversation,” Kiotis noted. “We offer conversation starters that we practice, and they learn about open-ended questions versus closedended questions.” Each month focuses on a different lesson plan. For October, the focus was stress management. November’s focus is time management. “We focus on community safety, or sometimes it’s attention skills or conversational skills,” Kiotis explained. “Each activity is geared toward focusing on those skills that go with the theme.” At the conclusion of the food drive, the collected items will be delivered by the STEPS group to the food bank, located at 650 Pennsylvania Drive, Exton. “We will go in a few different cars, and they can physically see everything they’ve worked on from beginning to end. It will be exciting for them,” Kiotis said. “They will also learn the exact amount of food that was donated.” For more information about the food drive or the STEPS program, readers may contact Kiotis at 610-280-0180, ext. 115, or akiotis@mainline-rehab.com. More information is also available at www.mainline -rehab.com and www.facebook.com/Main LineRehab. The Facebook page also contains a video made by the STEPS clients about the food drive.

The Gables’ now-grown sons have developed their own custom hay business from the farm and have branched out into selling specialty low-sugar hay for diabetic horses in addition to helping their parents with the dairy business and their other side jobs. Josie Gable, Don’s mother, also plays a vital role on the farm by helping to raise the calves and mowing. Don has continued his father’s environmental stewardship role on and off the farm. In addition to implementing environmentally friendly farming practices like low- and no-tilling on their fields, Don currently serves as the vice chair of the Chester County Conservation District’s board, of which he has been an active member since 2013. The commissioners and the Ag Council also presented the Distinguished Service Agriculture Award to Duncan Allison, a champion of agriculture and key figure in the development and advancement of the Chester County Ag Council. The Chester County commissioners, along with the county’s Agricultural Development Council (Ag Council), recently presented two agricultural awards at Conebella Farm in Elverson. The 2019 Farmers of the Year Award was presented to the Gable family, fifth-generation dairy farmers who own and operate Conebella Farm. They are well known for their 100% registered Ayrshire herd and valueadded dairy products, including their artisan, raw-milk cheeses and cheese spreads. The Gables have remained successful over the years through identifying additional opportunities for selling directly to customers at their on-farm store, farmers markets, festivals and more than 40 retail accounts across the region and online. In 2007, Don and Pam Gable knew they needed to expand beyond their traditional business model - selling milk to a dairy cooperative - to keep the farm viable for their sons one day. They started by selling raw milk from their farm to local customers. They continued to expand their product line to include a range of preservativefree, fresh and aged cheeses. This was soon followed by yogurt, yogurt smoothies and cultured

Fall Concert from pg 1 The Chester County Youth Orchestra (CCYO) invites the public to its fall concert, “Orchestral Favorites,” on Saturday, Nov. 16, at 7:30 p.m. at Church of the Good Samaritan, 212 W. Lancaster Ave., Paoli. CCYO, under the direction of Katrina Kelly and Mark Cellini, will present a variety of music, including the overture from “The Barber of Seville,” “Peer Gynt Suite,” “Night on Bald Mountain,” and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5. This concert will benefit the mission and work of the West Chester Senior Center. In lieu of tickets, guests are asked to bring either financial gifts or grocery store gift cards to benefit the senior center. CCYO provides opportunities for students in grades six through 12 to make music as part of a full symphony orchestra and to meet fellow musicians from school districts across Chester County and nearby areas. CCYO is dedicated to giving young musicians the chance to grow musically by performing challenging works from the standard orchestral literature, as well as music from the cinema and the Broadway stage. As members of the CCYO, students gain experience playing music of many different composers, styles, and time periods. CCYO is consistently seeking musically talented students from the ages of 11 to 18. Audition dates for all instruments will be posted at www.ccyo.org, along with more information about CCYO and information about financially supporting the orchestra. Readers are also invited to search for @ccyorch on Facebook and Instagram.

LCFC Fundraiser from pg 1 prize items will be a Nintendo Switch and a Kate Spade handbag. “We will have an individual box in front of each item, and people can purchase tickets to win,” explained Margie Mattes, one of the event organizers. Names will be drawn during the evening. Winners do not need to be present. Following dinner, attendees will be invited to dance. A disc jockey will provide the music. Organizers noted that it has been several years since the fundraiser was held. “Last time we had over 200 (people) attend the event, and the hall holds 300. Obviously, our goal is to fill up (the hall),” said Mattes. All proceeds from the event will benefit the fire company’s effort to purchase portable rescue tools like the Jaws of Life. “These are tools that help cut people out of cars if they are trapped,” explained Ross Trego, LCFC assistant fire chief, noting that the equipment costs approximately $30,000. “(The new tools) are battery powered, so they are lighter and more accessible. The (current) system runs off hydraulic fluid, so we have to drag the hoses all around.” Tickets to the fundraiser are currently available at Ludwig’s Corner Supply, 1230 Pottstown Pike, Glenmoore, or by emailing Betsy Trego at GriffithHall@ludwigscorner fire.com. Those interested in donating prizes for the drawing may also contact Betsy. Tickets purchased in advance will be discounted. Tickets will also be sold at the door.

Senders may also include a personal note to the recipient. Items that are prohibited include candy and gum, toothpaste, medications and vitamins, breakable items, aerosol cans and war-related items such as toy guns, knives or military figures. “All these rules are because of the countries that receive the boxes,” Amy noted. She said that each box should contain a “wow” item. “What we are really trying to concentrate on is the integrity of the boxes and the quality of what is in them,” said Amy. “We include ‘ wow ’ gifts so when the kid opens the box, he says, ‘Wow!’” “Wow” items include a soccer ball with a manual air pump, a stuffed animal, an outfit of clothing
or a small musical instrument such as a harmonica or recorder. “School supplies are important because some of (the children) can’t go to school unless they have pencils and pens, paper (and other items),” Amy added. Will and Amy have been involved with OCC for a number of years and have personally taken part in shoebox distributions in several countries, including Paraguay. This year, they were named coordinators for the OCC MidAtlantic North Region. “We are not in charge of a specific team anymore. We stepped up to regional staff. We are in charge of four teams - Chester County, Delaware County, Philadelphia and the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre area,” Amy explained. “We are involved in training leaders and doing leadership seminars and speaking to the teams to encourage

close to St. Anthony’s, and he frequented the lodge’s pool with his family in the summers. Martinez has had a number of shows throughout the region. His most recent series of paintings depicted Humphry Marshall, an important 18th-century botanist, and was displayed at the Chester County Historical Society for a year. He is currently working on paintings of the American Revolution Battle of Brandywine. Martinez’s work has been exhibited at the White House and at Camp David. He completed two paintings for the Bush White House, the 2001 Christmas card, an 8-by-16-foot mural, and a number of drawings for Camp David. In 2007 Martinez was asked by First Lady Laura Bush to create two murals of the country’s national parks for the 2007 holiday season. His paintings of the Grand Canyon in Arizona and Zion Park in Utah were displayed in the main hallway of the first floor of the White House. They are now permanently installed in the Bush Library in Dallas, Texas. Martinez received a Bachelor of Fine Arts/Painting from Maryland Institute College of Art, a Certificate of Studies in Fine Arts/Painting from St. Martin’s School of Art in London, and a Master of Arts in Fine Arts/Painting from Purdue University. He was an exhibit designer and instructor at the Kimbell Art Museum in Fort Worth, Texas, before moving to Downingtown. His work can be viewed at www.adrian martinez.com.

She served as a counselor in the guidance office at Henderson High School, focusing her career on developing young adults and advancing social justice, integration, and minority representation. In 1978, Thomas helped form the Black Student Union due to a lack of minority leadership in the student government at the time.
