Students Plant Tulips During Red Ribbon Week By Francine Fulton

BENEFIT RACE

As part of the Plant the Promise initiative, students and adult volunteers at Downingtown High School West (DHSW) recently planted red tulip bulbs in front of the school building. The bulbs, which will bloom this spring, will serve as a reminder of the importance of living a drug-free life. Plant the Promise, held for the first time in the Downingtown Area School District (DASD), was part of DHSW’s observance of Red Ribbon Week, a national drug and violence prevention awareness campaign that was recognized from Oct. 23 to 31 this year. In addition to DHSW, tulip bulbs were scheduled to be planted at Downingtown High School East (DHSE), the Downingtown STEM Academy and the DASD administration building. The Plant the Promise program was

spearheaded locally by Downingtown Communities That Care (CTC), which was responsible for ordering the tulip bulbs and making them available to local churches, schools and community organizations. According to www.redribbon.org, the Red Ribbon campaign started in 1985 when Enrique “Kiki” Camarena, a DEA agent, lost his life while working to uncover the identities of members of an illegal drug cartel. In 1986, the Red Ribbon celebration was created in honor of Camarena and people were encouraged to wear a red ribbon to show their commitment to fight illegal drug use. Today, it is estimated that more than 80 million youths and adults participate in Red Ribbon Week each year. At DHSW, the volunteers planted 400 red tulip bulbs in a flower bed located in front of the school building near a sign that reads “Drunk Drivers See Tulips pg 7

Book Sale from pg 1 major credit cards will be accepted for book sale purchases each day of the sale. A tote bag special will be offered throughout the entire event. People can fill a tote bag, which is designed to hold books and has a pocket for a patron’s library card, for a suggested fee. The sale will feature thousands of books, which are currently being sorted by volunteers. “We’ve been very busy cataloging the many community donations of books and media, as well as books and DVDs culled from the library’s collection,” said Maria Gavin, membership and volunteer chair for the Friends group. The Friends’ spring book sale was expanded to four days for the first time this year, and the fall book sale will also run for four days. “There were a lot of people (shopping) during the daytime,” noted Judy Elliott, president of the Friends group. “It was helpful especially for parents who wanted to shop while their kids were at school.” She added that book sales remain popular with the community. “People thought e-readers

would decrease the donations, but that hasn’t been the case,” Elliott said. “People want to get off their devices and read (actual) books.” Books will be offered for sale in the main conference room area of the annex, and smaller individual rooms will be dedicated to certain sale items, such as paperbacks. Fiction books will be sorted alphabetically by author. Nonfiction books will be sorted by category, such as parenting, health and beauty, politics, history, gardening and cookbooks. All proceeds from the upcoming book sale will be used for supplemental programming and materials for the library. In the past year, the Friends group has sponsored adult and youth summer and winter reading programs, new audiovisual equipment, a new book drop, yoga and tai chi classes and more. For those who cannot attend the upcoming book sale, the Friends operate a Book Nook inside the library, where patrons can find deals on donated books and DVDs throughout the year. The Book Nook, open during regular library hours, is located

to the right of the library’s entrance when entering from the parking lot. Donations for the Book Nook are accepted year-round. People may leave donations of books and DVDs in the bins located near the rear entrance of the library. All donations are tax-deductible, and tax donation forms are available. “Books should be in decent condition with no mold, and we do not take textbooks,” Elliott noted. The mission of the Friends of the Henrietta Hankin Branch Library is to support the library through advocacy, volunteer services and fundraising. For more information about joining the Friends group or volunteering, readers may email Hankin friends@ccls.org or visit www.hankinlibraryfriends.org. More information is also available by searching for “Friends of the Henrietta Hankin Branch Library” on Facebook. The Henrietta Hankin Branch Library is located near the intersection of routes 100 and 401 at 215 Windgate Drive, Chester Springs.

ARRIVING LATE?

The David’s Drive 831 AllAmerican 5K will be held on S a t urday, Nov. 10, on the campus of West Chester University (WCU). All proceeds will benefit David’s Drive, a nonprofit charity committed to improving the quality of life for hospitalized and homeless veterans. Same-day registration will open at 9 a.m. at Ehinger Gymnasium on the campus of WCU at 700 S. Church St., West Chester. The 5K will begin at 10 a.m., and participants may run or walk. Attendees are encouraged to wear red, white and blue to the event, which is being held the day before Veterans Day. The race will be professionally timed, and water and snacks will be provided to all participants. Medals will be awarded to the top three male and female finishers of the 5K. People are also invited to walk the 5K. David’s Drive 831 (DD831) was created in memory of David Turner Jr., who died in 2009 at the age of 20 of a suspected heart arrhythmia. At the time, David worked at the Coatesville Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center. David had great respect for the veterans he served, many of whom were homeless and in early recovery and came to the VA without essentials. Since the charity’s formation by the Turner family, basics such as socks, underwear and T-shirts are provided to the veterans at the Coatesville VA on a regular basis. The 5K is being hosted by Phi Sigma Sigma, where Samantha Turner, David’s sister, was a member when she attended WCU. “They continue to support David’s Drive even though Samantha graduated in 2014,” noted David Turner Sr., DD831

founder and president. “That shows the strength of the Phi Sig bond between sisters. Samantha lost her brother her freshman year at WCU, and she wouldn’t be who she is today without her sisters.” The race organizer is Meeka McKently, a junior at WCU and the philanthropy chair for Phi Sigma Sigma. She noted that the 5K will feature a paved course that will take runners and walkers through the college campus. “This year’s course is a little different because of construction on campus,” she noted. “The course will be clearly marked, and there will be people directing the runners. The runners will set off first, and the walkers will carry on behind them.” She noted that participants with dogs and children in strollers are welcome. “We have about 50 people preregistered, and we always get walkups,” said Meeka. “It’s not a huge race, but it’s a good amount of people.” Members of the Turner family will be on hand at the event to answer questions and provide information about David’s Drive. “We will have an area dedicated to David,” Meeka noted. Meeka has experience organizing 5K events. For the past eight years, she and her family have held the Marc McKently Memorial 5K Run in honor of Marc, Meeka’s brother, who died in a car accident in 2011 at the age of 17. “I was happy to get a chance to (organize the David’s Drive 5K),” said Meeka. “I have a background in planning a 5K, and I understand the Turners’ story and I have a connection with them.” She added that the Marc McKently Run finances a scholarship in Marc’s name to a senior graduating from Oley Valley High School in Berks County.

Runners and walkers who participate in the David’s Drive 831 All-American 5K are encouraged to wear red, white and blue to the event, which will be held on Nov. 10, the day before Veterans Day.

Samantha Turner is shown in front of the Phi Sigma Sigma sorority house at West Chester University (WCU), the same organization that is hosting the David’s Drive 831 All-American 5K on the campus of WCU on Nov. 10. The charity is named after Samantha’s brother, who died at the age of 20 and was an employee of the Coatesville Veterans Affairs Medical Center. For more information about the David’s Drive All-American 5K and to register, readers may visit www.runsignup.com/Race/PA/ WestChester/DD831 or www.run ccrs.com/race-calendar and search for “David’s Drive 831 AllAmerican 5K.” More information about DD831 is available at

PLCB Announces Poster Contest

Please call our office when yyour arrives later than Wednesday.

Earlier this year, the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board (PLCB) unveiled a new alcohol education campaign called “Know When, Know How.” This campaign teaches parents how to start a conversation with their children about the dangers of underage drinking. In an effort to continue the dialogue about the dangers of underage drinking, the PLCB is encouraging students from across the commonwealth to participate in the 27th annual Alcohol Awareness Poster Contest. The contest is open to all Pennsylvania students in kindergarten through 12th grade, including those who are homeschooled or

in private or parochial schools. Students may enter through their schools, clubs, or Scout troops, or they may enter individually. Entries must feature a clear no-use message about underage drinking and may be created using any artistic medium. Students are encouraged to use positive messages and images, such as the benefits of being alcoholfree or alternatives to underage drinking. Each year, approximately 50 posters are selected by a panel of judges for recognition. Each artist who creates a selected poster will be notified of his or her accomplishment and invited to attend a recognition ceremony

in Harrisburg in April 2019, which is Alcohol Awareness Month. Several students will receive $50, and one student from each grade will receive $25. Some of the winning designs may be reproduced in various formats and distributed across Pennsylvania. Entries must be postmarked no later than Friday, Nov. 16. For additional information about submission dates, guidelines, and prizes, readers may review the contest guidelines and entry form available at www.lcb.pa.gov under Education, then Poster Contest. Questions about the contest may be directed to 717-772-1432 or

RA-LBEducation@pa.gov. The Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board works to educate the public about the dangers of underage and dangerous drinking through a variety of avenues, including the poster contest, a free annual alcohol educational conference, the creation and distribution of a wide range of educational materials, and training and technical assistance for organizations working to address the issues related to irresponsible consumption. The PLCB is again providing a sample lesson plan, which educators are encouraged to use in guiding and teaching students about the dangers of underage drinking.

How To Improve Safety While Driving Many drivers are less comfortable driving at night than during the day. However, following several simple steps can help drivers enhance their nighttime visibility and reduce their risk of being in an accident. Daytime running lights can make it easier for drivers to be seen during the day, but they are not designed for nighttime driving. If a driver is struggling to see as evening transitions into nighttime, it is recommended they turn their headlights on earlier, using the car’s automatic switch setting if it has one.

Properly maintained headlights can improve driver visibility at night. And such maintenance is simple, yet effective. Drivers should simply check the age and performance of their headlight bulbs. If they are more than three years old and/or dimming, they should be replaced to ensure optimal performance. A recent AAA study discovered that the halogen headlights found in more than 80 percent of vehicles on the road today fail to safely illuminate unlit roadways, even when vehicles are moving at speeds as low as 40 miles per

hour. By upgrading their headlights, drivers can quickly and effectively put more light on the road. The plastic headlamp lenses found on most vehicles tend to become hazed and yellow over time from the effects of sunlight, ozone, road pollution, and carwash chemicals. Such clouding reduces headlight output and compromises nighttime visibility. Headlight restoration kits can be used to combat clouding on headlights as well as taillights, turn signals, and reflective lens covers, improving driver visibility while also making cars more visible to other drivers. In addition, headlight restoration kits may employ a protective UV coating that produces longer lens clarity while preventing future clouding.

Other activities were held at DHSW during Red Ribbon Week. Students signed pledges to live a drug-free life, and students and staff wore red on Oct. 24. Egnaczyk pointed out that she delivered tulip bulbs to other organizations as well, including The Well community center in Downingtown. “We planted 400 here (at DHSW) and East ordered 300 and STEM ordered 200,” she pointed out. “At the Downingtown Fall Fest, CTC set up a table and (a representative from) the Coatesville Area School District ordered 500 for King’s Highway Elementary School.” Egnaczyk encourages local residents to plant their own red

tulip bulbs and take part in the Plant the Promise campaign. “Can you imagine if more and more people planted bulbs - businesses, individual residents and more schools and churches?” she said. “The goal is to ‘paint the town red’ (this spring).” According to its mission statement, the CTC’s goal is to promote a safe and supportive environment for youths by addressing factors such as substance abuse, violence, delinquency, truancy and bullying. St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Glenmoore held a Blessing of the Animals on Oct. 7. The date was chosen specifically in connection to St. Francis of Assisi, patron saint of animals, as it is close to the Feast of St. Francis, which is in October. Multiple parishioners and a few community members attended with their pets by their side. All the pets in attendance were dogs. The event started with owners leading their dogs in an animal parade around the back lawn of St. Andrew’s Church. The parade

ended at a tent, where a short service and the Rev. Tommy Thompson’s blessing of each animal occurred. Local business partners provided gift items that were given away at the event. An on-site food truck served empinadas, and a local business showcased bunnies, mice and hamsters. Military Decorations Website Launched The Pennsylvania Treasury has launched a new state website dedicated to reuniting military decorations that have been reported as unclaimed property with their rightful owners. The new search function allows

users to search their names, or the name of a loved one, to see if Treasury is holding a military decoration as unclaimed property. In addition, users can look through a photo gallery featuring some of the decorations

that are in the unclaimed property vault, as well as medals that have been returned to their rightful owners. Military decorations are often reported to Treasury as contents held in a safe deposit

box that has gone unclaimed or abandoned. Since 2017, Treasury has returned 58 service decorations, some of which have been in Treasury’s custody for decades, including Purple Hearts, to their rightful

owners. Treasury continues to search for the owners of more than 500 unclaimed military awards. To search for unclaimed military decorations, readers may visit www.patreasury.gov.

Protecting Cars From Elements

Tips For Sharing The Road Safely The country’s roadways are for all to enjoy. Tens of millions of cars take to the roads every day, but they are not the only mode of transportation allowed on the road. Cyclists and pedestrians also make use of streets when sidewalks or biking paths are unavailable. Although biking and walking are inherently safe activities for millions of people per year, motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians can all take steps to make roads safer for everyone. Everyone should follow the rules of the road. Whether riding

a bike or driving a motor vehicle, the rules of the road are the same. That means heeding traffic signals, signage, right-of-way, speed limits, and much more. When using the roads, people should avoid alcohol use. Alcohol impairs motor skills, which are necessary to walk and operate cars and bicycles safely. Many accidents and fatalities on the roads can be traced to alcohol consumption. Individuals should not drink and drive or drink and ride. Pedestrians who need to walk heavily trafficked areas would

be smart to limit their alcohol consumption as well. Pedestrians and cyclists can make themselves more visible to motorists in various ways. Wearing bright-colored, reflective gear when walking or riding and installing reflective lights on bicycles are ways to be more visible. Drivers should remain alert at all times when behind the wheel. Motorists should be focused on the road at all times, avoiding distractions such as smartphones and in-vehicle entertainment systems. Such devices can

dramatically reduce motorists’ reaction times, greatly increasing the risk of accident. Drivers should slow down when cyclists, runners, and other pedestrians are nearby. Drivers should pass safely and give room. They should not pass too closely when driving near cyclists and pedestrians. Drivers should always yield to pedestrians in crosswalks. Whether driving, riding a bicycle, or walking, everyone should work together to share roads safely. For more information, readers may visit www.nhtsa.gov.

Tips Posted For Driving More Efficiently Unlicensed drivers learning to drive are often taught the benefits of defensive driving. Safety is often the focus of such lessons, but the benefits of driving safely and efficiently extend far beyond safety. According to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), aggressive driving can lower gas mileage by roughly 15 to 30 percent at highway speeds. In addition, a 2017 study from researchers at the DOE’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory found that aggressive driving can contribute to a reduced fuel efficiency by as much as 40 percent in stop-and-go traffic.

Speeding as well as rapid acceleration and braking are hallmarks of aggressive driving, and each of these habits puts drivers, their passengers and other motorists at risk of accident and injury. By taking the following steps to drive more efficiently, drivers can save money and potentially even lives. Rooftop cargo units can be beneficial for family vacations or other extended getaways, but using rooftop cargo boxes as traveling storage units for items not needed on a daily basis or simply keeping empty units attached to vehicle roofs compromises fuel efficiency. Rooftop cargo bins

increase the aerodynamic drag on vehicles, forcing them to burn more fuel than they would burn while moving without anything attached to the roof. The DOE estimates suggest that large, blunt rooftop cargo boxes can reduce fuel efficiency by as much as 25 percent when a vehicle is moving at speeds between 65 and 75 miles per hour. Trunks are not closets, so resist the temptation to use them to store golf clubs and other items that are better stored in a house or garage. Research has indicated that an extra 100 pounds in a vehicle can reduce gas mileage by about 1 percent.

Because that figure is based on the percentage of extra weight relative to the vehicle’s weight, drivers of small vehicles may find using their trunks as closets to be especially costly and inefficient. Cruise control makes it possible for vehicles to maintain constant speeds. That helps drivers ensure they are always obeying the speed limit, and it keeps cars from the constant acceleration and deceleration that wastes fuel. Efficient driving is safe, costeffective and eco-friendly. With some simple strategies, drivers can do their part to protect the planet and make roads safer, all while saving money.

DMVA Shares News For Veterans The Pennsylvania Department of Military and Veterans Affairs (DMVA) appreciates the sacrifices made by all veterans and wants to see that everyone leaving the military receives every benefit they earned with their service to America. To prepare for the future, veterans are encouraged to register with the DMVA, apply for federal health care benefits, and safeguard important military paperwork. Taking these steps when transitioning back to civilian life may help to make accessing military benefits

easier going forward. Veterans can sign up for the DMVA Veterans Registry at www.register.dmva.pa.gov. In addition to veterans, family members and people who work with veterans can sign up for the registry to receive helpful information about programs, benefits, and services. Information about how to apply for U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) health care benefits can be found by going to www.va.gov/HEALTHBENEFITS/apply/. It is also important for veterans to

safeguard their DD-214/215 and other military documents by filing them at their county courthouse of record. The DD-214 is an official document that contains the information needed to verify military service and help to avoid verification issues later in life. The DD-215 is used to correct errors or make additions to a DD-214. Additionally, any National Guard member who has not been ordered on active duty will not receive a DD-214. The discharge documents for National Guard members are

the NGB-22 and NGB-23. The easiest way to manage military documents is to make sure they are filed in a safe place immediately upon leaving the military. However, veterans who need help should never hesitate to contact the DMVA for assistance with searching for any military documents. Anyone needing assistance from the DMVA to locate their DD-214/215 or other military documentation may contact 717861-8910 or ra-req@pa.gov.

Drivers who have garages but use them to store things other than their vehicles can use car covers when parking their cars in their driveways. Covers protect cars from the elements and can be quickly and easily removed. Nature can be harsh on vehicles. Protecting automobiles from the elements should be a priority for drivers, especially those who do not park their cars and trucks in garages.

Some drivers, especially those who do not park their cars and trucks in garages, may write off bird droppings as an annoying yet harmless side effect of vehicle ownership. However, bird droppings are acidic, and if left to their unsightly devices, can cause permanent damage to vehicle paint. Tree sap is an equally formidable foe, potentially causing scratching because it can be very difficult to remove without spreading. Specially formulated sprays can help drivers remove bird droppings and sap from their vehicles.
